Baton Rouge (/ˌbætən ˈruːʒ/; French for "Red Stick", French: Bâton-Rouge [bɑtɔ̃ ʁuʒ]) is the capital of the U.S. state of Louisiana and its second-largest city. The seat of East Baton Rouge Parish, the city is located on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River.
As the "Capital City", Baton Rouge is the political hub for Louisiana, and is the second-largest metropolitan city in the state, with an estimated population of 228,895 as of 2014. The metropolitan area surrounding the city, known as Greater Baton Rouge, had a population of 820,159 people as of 2013. The urban area has around 594,309 inhabitants.
Baton Rouge is a major industrial, petrochemical, medical, research, motion picture, and growing technology center of the American South. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge is the tenth largest in the United States in terms of tonnage shipped, and is the farthest upstream Mississippi River port capable of handling Panamax ships.
The Baton Rouge area owes its historical importance to its strategic site upon the Istrouma Bluff, the first natural bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta. This allowed development of a business quarter safe from seasonal flooding. In addition, the city built a levee system stretching from the bluff southward to protect the riverfront and low-lying agricultural areas. The city is a culturally rich center, with settlement by immigrants from numerous European nations and African peoples. It was ruled by seven different governments: French, British, and Spanish in the colonial era, West Floridian, United States territory and state, Confederate, and United States again.
WBRZ, virtual channel 2 (digital channel 13), is an ABC affiliate television station serving Baton Rouge, Louisiana, south-central and southeastern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi. It is owned by the Manship family, who formerly published the Baton Rouge daily newspaper, The Advocate. Its transmitter is located in Sunshine, Louisiana, and the station's studios are located on Highland Road in Baton Rouge, just south of downtown. The station is seen via satellite through DirecTV and Dish Network and on cable through Cox Communications and AT&T U-verse.
WBRZ signed on the air on April 14, 1955 as a primary NBC affiliate, sharing ABC with WAFB.
At first, the Manships wanted to call the station WBRA-TV, for the Baton Rouge Advocate, but went with the reverse "Z" at the end instead, avoiding the implications of having calls which could be understood to also mean the women's undergarment. Station founder Douglas L. Manship, Sr. still wanted "BR" in the station's calls, explaining the choice of "Z" at the end that "it was a good choice. 'Z' is a phonetically good sound on the air. It's distinctive." The "Z" was later expanded to mean "2" (similar to WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, New York). The WBRA call letters are currently used on the PBS member station in Roanoke, Virginia (standing for the Blue Ridge Mountains), though that entity emphasizes their "Blue Ridge PBS" branding over call letters except where required by the FCC. Until 1989, WBRZ was a sister station to WJBO-AM and WYNK-FM, until the Manships sold both radio stations. From the late 1960s until the late 1970s, WYNK was considered an affiliate of WBRZ.
Eyewitness News is a style of news broadcasting that is used by local television stations in different markets around the world. It refers to a particular style of television newscast with an emphasis on visual elements and action video. It replaced the traditional "man-on-camera" newscast.
The earliest known use of the Eyewitness News name in American television was in April 1959 when KYW-TV - at the time, based in Cleveland, Ohio and owned by Westinghouse Broadcasting - launched the nation's first 90-minute local newscast (under the title Eyewitness), which was combined with the then 15-minute national newscast. The name was then adopted for use by Westinghouse's other television stations – KPIX in San Francisco, California; WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Maryland; WBZ-TV in Boston, Massachusetts and KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – for their local newscasts.
After the KYW-TV call letters, management, and some staffers moved from Cleveland to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1965 (the result of a government-ordered reversal of a 1956 station swap involving it and Cleveland's WNBK (the current day WKYC) between Westinghouse and NBC) its then-news director, Al Primo, created the Eyewitness News format. In this format, which was meant to be faster in pace than the standard newscast format (in which an anchor simply read headlines), a reporter in the field would be the "eyewitness" to a news event to the anchor in the studio and the viewer at home. The anchors became personalities instead of presenters with the introduction of banter, or "happy talk" as it was named by Al Primo. Anchors would give their own personal comments in between stories to let viewers know their personalities.
The Station nightclub fire occurred on Thursday, February 20, 2003, in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The fire was caused by pyrotechnics set off by the tour manager of the evening's headlining band Great White, which ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. A fast-moving fire engulfed the club in 5½ minutes. Video footage of the fire shows its ignition, rapid growth, the billowing smoke that quickly made escape impossible, and the exit blockage that further hindered evacuation. The toxic smoke, heat and the stampede of people toward the exits killed 100; 230 were injured and another 132 escaped uninjured. Many of the survivors developed posttraumatic stress disorder as a result of psychological trauma.
It was the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, killing 100 people. It was one of the deadliest disasters in the history of New England. Because it was a high-casualty fire caused by illegal indoor usage of outdoor fireworks, the 2003 disaster is similar to the 2004 República Cromañón nightclub fire in Buenos Aires, Argentina; the 2008 Wuwang Club fire in Shenzhen, China; the 2009 Santika Club fire in Watthana, Bangkok, Thailand (cause is disputed); the 2009 Lame Horse fire in Perm, Russia; the 2013 Kiss nightclub fire in Santa Maria, Brazil, and the 2015 Colectiv nightclub fire in Bucharest, Romania.

Here is a station id montage form WBRZ, the ABC affiliate for Baton Rouge, LA. All copyrights acknowledged. This is a slightly updated version. WBRZ is a locally owned station, owned by the Manship Family, which had previously owned WJBO-AM (Baton Rouge’s first radio station) and “The Advocate,” the town newspaper. The earliest ids and bumpers are from around 1983 when the station slogan was “People You can Count On,” which used an accompanying Terry Sweet image campaign and news theme later used by KTNV of Las Vegas and WCHS of Charleston, WV. At the time, WBRZ also used many of ABC’s graphics, as well. The station’s news branding was Eyewitness News, Nightdesk (for 10 PM), 2Une In (morning), and mobile unit Newstar 2. By late 1984, the station changed its slogan to “The One to Wat...
WBRZ's 10pm news production is unrivaled in the BR market. To the point writing, compelling video and a friendly team make this the newscast to watch. And, only in this busy southern city would traffic be a bigger story than a shooting. Don't miss a minute of this best newscast submission and see why News 2 is the best news team in Louisiana.
Around October 10, 2016, WBRZ apparently changed its news theme. Having previously used "Extreme" by Stephen Arnold Music since 2007 when the station upgraded its facilities to broadcast in high definition, the new news theme debuted in October. News theme is Impact Version 5 by 615 Music, ending Baton Rouge's approximately one-year stint of being a Stephen Arnold Music Island (as WAFB used CBS Local, WVLA used Evolution, and WGMB used both Inergy and Extreme). The graphics are largely the same as they have been since 2013, but they received a slight downgrade in early 2017. All copyrights acknowledged. WBRZ is the ABC affiliate in Baton Rouge, LA.

From 1984, here is an image campaign for WBRZ, the ABC affiliate in Baton Rouge, LA. All copyrights acknowledged. This one is a second version of "The One to Watch" as pinned by Wisconsin-based composer Terry Sweet. This version is more upbeat than the other one uploaded and seems to compliment the news theme (used from 1985-late 1986) better that was later used by ABC affiliate WEAR-TV in Pensacola, Mobile, and Fort Walton Beach from 1989-1994. This one mixes many shots of WBRZ and its programming with ABC's "We're With You" image campaign from 1984-1985. Ends with a shot of Jim Varney and features some of the shows airing on the station at the time. Louisiana, you got the spirit in your soul. For the good life and memories, let the good times roll. November 14th, 2014 BATON ROUGE, LA -- Together Baton Rouge and city officials take action to bridge the grocery gap in Baton Rouge.
From 1994, here is a news open from WBRZ, the ABC affiliate in Baton Rouge, LA. All copyrights acknowledged. Features the Gari theme "Pride Inside," which the station used from 1990-1997 and mentions the late John Mahaffey and Bruce Katz (now of WGNO). I finally got it! This is a sample look at WBRZ's 24-hour weather channel, seen on WBRZ-DT 2.3 in Baton Rouge. This weather channel is unique, since it just has voiceovers to deliver weather information, as well as maps, graphics, live traffic cameras and more, including current conditions for ONLY Baton Rouge and the 7-day forecast. This channel has been on 2.3 for years, but just recently, is now streaming online at WBRZ.com and under the weather section, find "WBRZ 24-hour Live Weather." I've been dying to find this channel and they are finally streaming it! Btw, sorry for the buffering in the end. That was the live stream, not me. This is slideshow of historic Baton Rouge photos, Links are included at the end to most of these images. The maps are highly detailed when enlarged, I can upload them separataly if requested A few notes from my research: Fla Blvd was origainally called Shell Road before it was paved, The shells made it easy for horse drawn carriages to travel on. Leaving Downtown BR proper North Blvd changed names Jefferson Hwy, (later this section changed Names again to Goverment) it ended at S Acadian. Acadian was then was a short section of Clay Cut. The 2 road maps (one drawn in the late 1800's & one in 1920) are hard overlay Clay Cut was called clay gut road, when it was discovered it was a path that wild oxen traveled on. Looking at the old hand drawn map lower Clay cut changed names to Hope Vil...

Again I start this but I'll add a new twist
So the masses can't resist
The message brought by a Panther strictly
To relieve the disease of the sickly
So long your mind's been trapped
Slave, 'cause you're shamed to be black
Ignorant of the purpose of the plan
To keep the black man down under
So I'll address y'all this time
Make a statement that's on my mind
Brothers scared of revolution should be
Thinkin' of the way that we could be
Miss blue eyes, how'd you do that?
Tried to put him in but the skin is still black
Thinkin' of a way to escape the darkness
See the weave and indeed I start this off
Black is black is black is black off
Black is black is black is black
S E D I T I O N
In the mood of the move I'm showin'
See the way the clinches have been torn
Cold spittin' facts to the miracle Earth born
So what's your next move, black?
Go to school or maybe join a frat
Still you seem lost, the mind is brainwashed
It can't be good 'cause your mind's the cost
So flip on your Young MC
Or Jazzy Jeff or whatever the case be
Mindless music for the masses makes ya
Think less of the one that hates ya
Then trained to respect the game
And you turn your back on a black with the same claim
Oh, blessed but you guess they mean less
Because another brother can't afford to dress
The way you do but who said you're all that?
Made a little money, now your skin ain't black?
C'mon I don't think your shit don't stink
You can't run from the one whose primal instinct
Is to fought the words I taught ya
Thought you moved quick but I just caught ya
Now you try to say that you don't remember me
I'm P-Dog from the B.P. posse
Or a mob, that's known as Scarface
Pro-black and some think pro-hate
But in fact it's a call for unity
Heed the plea of weak we're soon to be
Move, start this
Black is black is black is black
Enter the dark side
Black is black is black is black
Yeah, funky
Dance
Now who did you think that you were steppin' to
Once your job came through
Don't get big, 'cause I caught your accent
Shoulda been real but you wanted mass appeal
Next time you might think of this
Might remember why I'm above this
But for now, my brother, I'll say
