Jules Hudson heads to Anglesey to help a couple with £300,000 find a permanent base on the Welsh island that has long been their favourite holiday destination. Away from the house hunt, Jules finds out about the prehistoric character that defines the local landscape and learns some Bronze Age skills.
In early 2006 an aerial photographic survey of Anglesey produced a remarkable image. On the slopes south of the town of Amlwch approximately four miles from the island's north coast - a large pentangular earthwork could be seen.
The earthwork, known as Y Werthyr, has long been known about - but until the photograph was taken nobody knew its full extent. It had never been excavated, nor properly identified.
If comparisons with other sites on the island are correct, however, Y Werthyr is one of a small group of pentangular or polygonal enclosures that date from the middle to late Iron Age. This was the time when, according to classical sources, the island of Anglesey was the centre of the ancient Britons' druidic priesthood.
Y Werthyr presented Time Team with a rare opportunity to excavate a large, previously uninvestigated, site. And perhaps, too, a chance to catch a glimpse of one of the bloodiest events in British history - the Roman suppression of druidic Anglesey.

Beaumaris in Anglesey during the summer heatwave we are having. Anglesey is such a stunning place, absolutely delightful and very varied with idyllic seaside villages and golden sands. Packed full of history, architecture and people from all walks of life a truly great British place to stay and visit.

Beaumaris was originally a Viking settlement known as Porth y Wygyr ("Port of the Vikings"),[citation needed] but the town itself began its development in 1295 when Edward I of England, having conquered Wales, commissioned the building of Beaumaris Castle as part of a chain of fortifications around the North Wales coast (others include Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech).
The castle was built on a marsh and that is where it found its name: the French builders called it beaux marais which translates as "beautiful marshes".

Anglesey /ˈæŋɡəlsi/ (Welsh: Ynys Môn) [ˈənɨs ˈmoːn], is an island and, as Isle of Anglesey, a county off the north west coast of Wales. Two bridges, spanning the Menai Strait, connect it to the mainland: the original Menai Suspension Bridge (carrying the A5), designed by Thomas Telford in 1826; and the more recently rebuilt Britannia Bridge (replacing the original designed by Robert Stephenson), which carries the A55 and the North Wales Coast Railway Line. Historian and author John Davies argues that it was during the tumultuous 10th century that the Norse name for Môn, Anglesey, came into existence; the name was later adopted into English after Anglo-Norman occupiers arrived to conquer the island during the Norman invasions of Gwynedd.
The name Anglesey was later used in the English language as a county name which included Holy Island and other nearby small islands. About half of the inhabitants can speak, read and write Welsh as well as English, and 70% have a knowledge of Welsh. Once the Welsh language was granted equal status in government with the Welsh Language Act of 1993, the representative constituency names for the island were changed to the Welsh name of the island, Ynys Môn (UK Parliament constituency) in the UK parliament, and Ynys Môn (Assembly constituency) in the National Assembly for Wales. With an area of 714 square kilometres (276 sq mi), Anglesey is the largest Welsh island, the sixth largest surrounding the island of Great Britain, and the largest island in the Irish Sea ahead of the Isle of Man.

Time Team S14-E04 The Druids' Last Stand, Anglesey
In early 2006 an aerial photographic survey of Anglesey produced a remarkable image. On the slopes south of the town of Amlwch approximately four miles from the island's north coast - a large pentangular earthwork could be seen. The earthwork, known as Y Werthyr, has long been known about - but until the photograph was taken nobody knew its full extent. It had never been excavated, nor properly identified. If comparisons with other sites on the island are correct, however, Y Werthyr is one of a small group of pentangular or polygonal enclosures that date from the middle to late Iron Age. This was the time when, according to classical sources, the island of Anglesey was the centre of the ancient Britons' druidic priesthood. In early 2006 an aerial photographic survey of Anglesey produced a remarkable image. On the slopes south of the town of Amlwch approximately four miles from the island's north coast - a large pentangular earthwork could be seen.

Holyhead is the largest town in the county of Anglesey in Wales and is also a major Irish Sea port providing a major ferry crossing point between Holyhead and in particular Dublin for the carriage of both exports and passenger traffic. Geographically it is not based on the Isle of Angelsey, but is located on Holy Island and was at one time connected to Angelsey by the Four Mile Bridge, the actual distance between the two points, but today the main causeway is known as The Cobb which carries both road and rail connections to and between the two destinations. Holyhead and the surrounding area has a wealth of history to relates, the town centre was built around St,Cybi's Church which is part of the interior of one of Europe's few three walled Roman forts, the fourth being the Irish Sea!... -

The large jetty now is a welcoming point for cruise ships from all over the world.
As a final interesting aside Holyhead is an important destination for twitchers (birdwatchers)
