It is now standard for the concept of Australia Day as one of national pride to be trashed by the usual flag burning, change name to Invasion Day, shift date, selection of Australian of the Year on advocacy of politically correct issues, call for a republic and so on. 2016 brought out the worst.

A humane proposal which does not involve any weakening of Australia’s policy of not admitting illegal/unauthorised (take your pick) arrivals. It is to admit to Australia as part of the refugee quota those who were on the way when off shore detention, never ever to be settled in Australia, took effect abruptly on 19 July 2013. It would be feasible to legislate to change the Migration Act to be able to renegotiate the exchange with Malaysia or Indonesia for the rest.

When Muslims move up towards 10% of the population, congregated in enclaves, social problems appear, escalating to terrorism, as seen in Western Europe countries. Malcolm Turnbull and  Bill Shorten have in common that both are bigheads in both senses of the word. And their careers have a lot in common. It is not pretty, but shows what it takes to be leader in politics,

The history books will characterise Abbott as the most blunder prone PM of Australia. The most noteworthy achievement which changed the course of events was stopping the boats. And hopefully plebiscites will become a way of letting Australians have their say on contentious issues.
