Antoni GAUDÌ - (1914) - Parc GÜELL in Barcelona, Spain
Park Güell is a garden complex with architectural elements situated on the hill of El Carmel in the Gràcia district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and built in the years 1900 to 1914. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí". The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi Güell, whom the park was named after. It was inspired by the English garden city movement; hence the original English name Park . The site was a rocky hill with little vegetation and few trees, called Muntanya Pelada (Bare Mountain). It already included a large country house called Larrard House or Muntaner de Dalt House, and was next to a neighborhood of upper class houses called La Salut (The Health). The intention was to exploit the fresh air (well away from smoky factories) and beautiful views from the site, with sixty triangular lots being provided for luxury houses. Count Eusebi Güell added to the prestige of the development by moving in 1906 to live in Larrard House. Ultimately, only two houses were built, neither designed by Gaudí. One was intended to be a show house, but on being completed in 1904 was put up for sale, and as no buyers came forward, Gaudí, at Güell's suggestion, bought it with his savings and moved in with his family and his father in 1906. This house, where Gaudí lived from 1906 to 1926, was built by Francesc Berenguer in 1904. It contains original works by Gaudí and several of his collaborators. It is now the Gaudí Museum (Casa Museu Gaudí) since 1963. In 1969 it was declared a historical artistic monument of national interest. The focal point of the park is the main terrace, surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent. To design the curvature of the bench surface Gaudí used the shape of buttocks left by a naked workman sitting in wet clay. The curves of the serpent bench form a number of enclaves, creating a more social atmosphere. Gaudí incorporated many motifs of Catalan nationalism, and elements from religious mysticism and ancient poetry, into the Park. The visitor was originally greeted by two life-size mechanical gazelles, but these have since been lost during the turbulence of war. The large cross at the Park's high-point offers the most complete view of Barcelona and the bay. It is possible to view the main city in panorama, with the Sagrada Família and the Montjuïc area visible at a distance.

A good strategy is to start at Parc Guell, a whimsical whirl of colored ceramics, sculptures, sinuous benches, weird buildings, bizarre pavilions and curved paths winding through a lush garden setting, with a view across the city from its hill-top perch.
The park's structures are curved in a mélange of fairy-tale shapes covered with mosaics of broken tiles in a style called "trencadis." Most of these tiles are brightly colored creating dazzling surfaces on the benches and columns, while other tiles are earth-brown fragments covering various pavilions and structures that look like they have grown out of the ground. Craftsmen worked under Gaudi's direction to create these amazing mosaics by smashing porcelain plates and pottery into little pieces then arranging them like a jigsaw puzzle. Some sculptures are similarly covered, especially the salamander fountain on the divided staircase that leads up to the 86-column Hypostile Hall. There is usually a small crowd waiting in turn to be photographed next to the bizarre salamander.
Gaudi was the city's most famous architect, best known for his still-unfinished Sagrada Familia church which is also worth seeing but is not as pleasing as this park. He lived from 1852 to 1926 and designed Parc Guell at the beginning of the 20th century as part of a large housing project that never got built. Instead we are left with this much more interesting and valuable 37-acre park that is one of the city's most popular attractions. Its main section consists of a broad terrace rimmed with benches and steps leading down to the front gate, which is flanked by two small Hansel and Gretel-inspired huts topped with ice cream sundae-shaped roofs. These small areas get very crowded, making it difficult to properly appreciate this premium destination, so your best strategy is to arrive when the park opens at 10:00 a.m. in order to see the colorful sights without a thousand other tourists getting in your way.
Parc Guell is too far from the center to comfortably reach by walking but you can get there in 30 minutes by public transportation, preferably bus number 24 heading in the Carmel direction, which conveniently drops you off right next to the upper level of the park. You can catch the bus from major downtown locales including Placa Catalunia and along the Passeig de Gracia. Alternatively, the metro could bring you to the general vicinity, but requires much more walking than the bus. If you prefer rail, take the metro Green Line L3 and get off at the Lesseps or Vallcarca stations and tackle a 20-minute walk, with the last portion leading up a steep hill and then into the park along a pleasant winding path through the woods. Some of that uphill climb is alleviated by outdoor escalators running alongside the road, but overall you'll find it easier to take the bus. The same bus route will take you back to downtown after the visit.
Gaudi lived on the property in one of the two houses that were actually constructed here. His home has been converted into a small museum of his memorabilia, for the die-hard fans. However there is not all that much in the way of attractions inside the house. They display some of the odd-shaped furniture designed by Gaudi, and visitors can enter his study, bedroom, living room and other parts of the house. There is an admission charge and the visit will take time, so you might find it unnecessary to enter this little museum, but you can certainly admire the outside of the house and garden for free, and it is conveniently located near the exit for the bus stop.
It only takes 30 minutes to see the park from top to bottom, but you might linger in the gift shop and get something to eat at one of two snack bars. The food and seating is a bit better at the lower café near the front gates, but the sandwich counter up above on the main terrace has a pleasant outdoor ambience, with a strangely entertaining way of ordering food in which you tell the clerk your sandwich choice and he barks back "five minutes" without taking your name or giving you a number, but all works out well in the end. This is not great food, but it's a simple, inexpensive sandwich on a long, hard roll, and if you are hungry it is conveniently located in this beautiful setting which could hit the spot.

If you prefer rail, take the metro Green Line L3 and get off at the Lesseps or Vallcarca stations and tackle a 20-minute walk, with the last portion leading up a steep hill and then into the park along a pleasant winding path through the woods. Some of that uphill climb is alleviated by outdoor escalators running alongside the road, but overall you'll find it easier to take the bus. The same bus route will take you back to downtown after the visit. Gaudi lived on the property in one of the two houses that were actually constructed here. His home has been converted into a small museum of his memorabilia, for the die-hard fans. However there is not all that much in the way of attractions inside the house. They display some of the odd-shaped furniture designed by Gaudi, and visitors can enter his study, bedroom, living room and other parts of the house. There is an admission charge and the visit will take time, so you might find it unnecessary to enter this little museum, but you can certainly admire the outside of the house and garden for free, and it is conveniently located near the exit for the bus stop. It only takes 30 minutes to see the park from top to bottom, but you might linger in the gift shop and get something to eat at one of two snack bars. The food and seating is a bit better at the lower café near the front gates, but the sandwich counter up above on the main terrace has a pleasant outdoor ambience, with a strangely entertaining way of ordering food in which you tell the clerk your sandwich choice and he barks back "five minutes" without taking your name or giving you a number, but all works out well in the end. This is not great food, but it's a simple, inexpensive sandwich on a long, hard roll, and if you are hungry it is conveniently located in this beautiful setting which could hit the spot. -

To design the curvature of the bench surface Gaudí used the shape of buttocks left by a naked workman sitting in wet clay. The curves of the serpent bench form a number of enclaves, creating a more social atmosphere. Gaudí incorporated many motifs of Catalan nationalism, and elements from religious mysticism and ancient poetry, into the Park. The visitor was originally greeted by two life-size mechanical gazelles, but these have since been lost during the turbulence of war. The large cross at the Park's high-point offers the most complete view of Barcelona and the bay. It is possible to view the main city in panorama, with the Sagrada Família and the Montjuïc area visible at a distance.

The curves of the serpent bench form a number of enclaves, creating a more social atmosphere. Gaudí incorporated many motifs of Catalan nationalism, and elements from religious mysticism and ancient poetry, into the Park. The visitor was originally greeted by two life-size mechanical gazelles, but these have since been lost during the turbulence of war. The large cross at the Park's high-point offers the most complete view of Barcelona and the bay. It is possible to view the main city in panorama, with the Sagrada Família and the Montjuïc area visible at a distance.

These small areas get very crowded, making it difficult to properly appreciate this premium destination, so your best strategy is to arrive when the park opens at 10:00 a.m. in order to see the colorful sights without a thousand other tourists getting in your way.
Parc Guell is too far from the center to comfortably reach by walking but you can get there in 30 minutes by public transportation, preferably bus number 24 heading in the Carmel direction, which conveniently drops you off right next to the upper level of the park. You can catch the bus from major downtown locales including Placa Catalunia and along the Passeig de Gracia. Alternatively, the metro could bring you to the general vicinity, but requires much more walking than the bus. If you prefer rail, take the metro Green Line L3 and get off at the Lesseps or Vallcarca stations and tackle a 20-minute walk, with the last portion leading up a steep hill and then into the park along a pleasant winding path through the woods. Some of that uphill climb is alleviated by outdoor escalators running alongside the road, but overall you'll find it easier to take the bus. The same bus route will take you back to downtown after the visit.

Up on the El Carmel hill, high above Barcelona, is Park Güell–one of the biggest architectural sites in southern Europe.
Originally meant to be a housing complex for the wealthy when it was designed in the early 1900s, it was instead made into a public park, free to enjoy even today.
Only two houses were ever built, so the garden dominates, with greenery and wildlife alongside incredibly detailed statues and architecture.
The park was designed to have a relaxing, natural atmosphere, with terraces and shaded walkways, pillars that look like trees, and a long bench shaped to look like a snake.
But the park also stimulates the imagination with stunning Art Nouveau structures and colorful mosaics made from broken tile.
You can just wander the paths and relax, or go on a hunt for all the park’s delightful oddities. The welcome center has suggested routes for getting the most out of the park.
While you’re there, visit the Gaudi House Museum, where the celebrated Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, who designed the park, once lived.
Though Gaudi didn’t design this house, he did design the furniture inside it, as well as many of the decorations and drawings on display.
Whatever course you take, be sure to spend a few hours in Park Güell.

How do you get around in Barcelona? Well, other than using your legs, the name of the game in Barcelona is the Metro. We like the buses too but more on that later.
We definitely recommend the Metro. It’s cheap, it’s safe; you’ll get to see loads of the city and if you’re familiar with using the London Underground, the Metro will feel pretty similar. So here goes…
A single ticket costs €2.15 and this is good for one, single journey. But, if you plan on travelling a lot over the course of your holiday, consider buying a T-10 ticket. It’s really useful because it allows you ten journeys and each journey can take up to an hour and fifteen minutes and I think it allows you on the bus as well as the Metro. And you can use it between two people so I can go through the barriers and then pass it back to Siân-Amy and she can go through too.
What’s also great about the T-10 ticket it that you don’t have to use all of your ten journeys in one day, because that would be pretty tough to do. In fact, no matter when you buy your ticket, it will still be valid until the end of January the following year.
If for some reason you don’t like the idea of those, you can buy tickets that are for two-day travel, three-day travel, that sort of thing. But we have spoken with locals out there, we’ve done it for ourselves and, sorry, but the T-10 just wins hands down. And we realise that’s a lot of information to take in, but what it comes down to is…
The T-10 will be great for you if you’re going to be in Barcelona for a few days and if you plan on going around the city and seeing a tonne of sights. T-10 is the way forward. T-10 FTW. T-10!
That’s the Metro in Barcelona. It’s open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and then 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Next up, seeing the city from buses. Sightseeing tours work on a hop-on, hop-off basis. There are two main bus tour companies in Barcelona. You’ve got Barcelona Bus Touristic and Barcelona City Tour. Barcelona Bus Touristic claim to be the official Barcelona bus tour company and they have three major routes: red, green and blue.
The red route includes some of the Gaudì attractions, Port Olympic - where as the blue route takes you to some of the most popular tourist attractions like Sagrada Família; you’ll go up to Park Güell and FC Camp Nou. The green route is a seasonal route. It runs from April to November and includes the coastal views.
You can buy your tickets on the bus, although I think you’re less likely to get them if it’s going to be really busy. You can buy them in the tourist office or you can even buy them online before you go, if you want to be super organised, and then when you get on the bus they’ll swap them for real tickets.
You can do a walking tour of the city if you want to use your feet. Some of them you do have to pay for and some of them are free. They include tours of the Gaudí attractions; a tour of the old city; a tour of Barcelona at night time. Yeah, it’s really cool. Obviously, if you don’t want to pay though, you can just wander around yourself and find your own way around.
We’re going to recommend using your feet to keep it cheap or going on the Metro. Obviously both these things are affordable and easy and just great ways to see the city. Yep and now you know how to get around the city, have a look at our video on the top things to do while you’re here.

If for some reason you don’t like the idea of those, you can buy tickets that are for two-day travel, three-day travel, that sort of thing. But we have spoken with locals out there, we’ve done it for ourselves and, sorry, but the T-10 just wins hands down. And we realise that’s a lot of information to take in, but what it comes down to is…
The T-10 will be great for you if you’re going to be in Barcelona for a few days and if you plan on going around the city and seeing a tonne of sights. T-10 is the way forward. T-10 FTW. T-10!
That’s the Metro in Barcelona. It’s open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and then 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Next up, seeing the city from buses. Sightseeing tours work on a hop-on, hop-off basis. There are two main bus tour companies in Barcelona. You’ve got Barcelona Bus Touristic and Barcelona City Tour. Barcelona Bus Touristic claim to be the official Barcelona bus tour company and they have three major routes: red, green and blue.
The red route includes some of the Gaudì attractions, Port Olympic - where as the blue route takes you to some of the most popular tourist attractions like Sagrada Família; you’ll go up to Park Güell and FC Camp Nou. The green route is a seasonal route. It runs from April to November and includes the coastal views.
You can buy your tickets on the bus, although I think you’re less likely to get them if it’s going to be really busy. You can buy them in the tourist office or you can even buy them online before you go, if you want to be super organised, and then when you get on the bus they’ll swap them for real tickets.
You can do a walking tour of the city if you want to use your feet. Some of them you do have to pay for and some of them are free. They include tours of the Gaudí attractions; a tour of the old city; a tour of Barcelona at night time. Yeah, it’s really cool. Obviously, if you don’t want to pay though, you can just wander around yourself and find your own way around.
We’re going to recommend using your feet to keep it cheap or going on the Metro. Obviously both these things are affordable and easy and just great ways to see the city. Yep and now you know how to get around the city, have a look at our video on the top things to do while you’re here.
