Reportbacks! (2015)
Thank you for all the solidarity you show, on June 11th or any day. It means everything.
June 11, 2015 : TRANSITION : The struggle’s not over…
The last year has been full of changes and transitions for our imprisoned comrades and for those of us engaged in struggle on the other side of the walls. Now, solidly in the throes of spring, we feel compelled to celebrate these transitions and victories as new life and energy burst forth all around us. It is not often that we get a chance to truly mix celebration and struggle - but now is one of those times! On January 8th of this year the Eastern District Court of California ordered Eric McDavid released from prison. Our comrade Marius came out publicly as a man and began seeking resources for his physical transition. We believe these are both transitions worthy of celebration and reason for continued struggle. It is in this spirit that we bring you our thoughts about J11 2015.
First, a bit of housekeeping: We have a new email address: june11th at riseup dot net! If you sent something to the old address, it is likely we did not receive it. We would love it if there were many translations of this callout and other support materials (many thanks to ContraInfo and others for supporting translation over the years)! Please send information about the June 11th events you are planning this year, posters, zines, and any report backs to june11th at riseup dot net. We are looking forward to hearing from you and will post events as we receive them at June11.org Every year events happen in new cities, and we hope you’ll encourage your friends and comrades far and wide to join us this year.
This day is an annual day of solidarity with long-term anarchist prisoners, including Marius Mason and Eric McDavid. In calling for the day, we aim to deepen ongoing support for comrades facing long sentences. They, in particular, risk being forgotten within a prisoner support model based on reacting to spikes in state repression and other emergencies. We are committed to building a model of solidarity that is both long-term and capable of flexibly responding to new developments. It is also vital to constantly build new links of solidarity between prisoners and between struggles, rather than fall back on static networks of personal links and contacts.
Originating as a day of solidarity for eco-prisoners, J11 remains anchored in a project of ecological defense and struggle against a society based on exploitation and confinement. As the focus shifted to solidarity with Marius and Eric, two eco-anarchist prisoners serving roughly 20-year sentences, people have expressed their solidarity through letter-writing nights, fundraisers, educational events, demonstrations and attacks. Any real effort to aid prisoners cannot be based simply on passive support, but must also include a commitment to build on their struggles before and after their imprisonment. More explanation about the context for and strategy of June 11th can be found here: About June11th
This day is an annual day of solidarity with long-term anarchist prisoners, including Marius Mason and Eric McDavid.
Last year, while organizing J11 events, we addressed challenging questions about the relationship between ecologically oriented struggles and anarchist anti-prison struggles. It is clear to us that the world which requires prisons also requires the destruction of the environment; as anarchists, we despise both. We are heartened by the growing movements against the tar sands, LNG pipelines, fracking and the myriad other ecologically destructive projects. The escalation of eco-struggles across the globe is both necessary and exciting. Both Marius and Eric remain committed to these struggles, as we remain committed to them, all eco-prisoners, and the struggles that they all - we all - are engaged in. But this year we have been given cause for celebration - and we would like to emphasize that as we move forward.
This year Marius Mason publicly shared his new name and use of male pronouns that better reflect his masculine gender identity. To quote his lawyer, Moira Meltzer-Cohen who is assisting with the legal aspects of his transition, Marius is someone "whose courage and integrity are made even more salient by the fact that his own liberation and autonomy have long been severely circumscribed." In the face of a world that systematically subjects trans people to violence, isolation and abuse, we hope that everyone shows their support of trans liberation by supporting Marius and the many imprisoned trans folks. This struggle should extend beyond mere fundraising. Trans prisoners are struggling not only for the material necessities of existence, but are also struggling against systems of domination which will stop at nothing to prevent them from simply being who they are. Our solidarity needs to be as creative and varied as the state’s tactics are cruel and oppressive.
On January 8th of this year, Eric McDavid was released from prison after nine years of incarceration. Eric returned home to his friends and family after a federal court granted his habeus corpus petition, stating that the FBI withheld evidence during the trial phase of his case. Because of this, Eric was able to plead guilty to a lesser charge which carried a five year maximum sentence - four years less than the time he had already served in federal prison. Eric's incredible determination and the awe-inspiring support from his family, friends and comrades have not only contributed to his emotional and physical well-being while behind bars but also to his eventual release. His release from prison after 9 years is a monumental change. Eric is now faced with building a new life after almost a decade of incarceration. This is a new phase of struggle for him, and we are committed to continuing our solidarity with him post-release.
On January 8th of this year, Eric McDavid was released from prison after nine years of incarceration.
We face new questions about how to help Eric during this transition from a heavily controlled prison environment to a life in the open prison (the conditions that overlap between Eric's parole and the society of control in which we all live). Although he is no longer living his life in a cage of concrete and razor wire, Eric still constantly faces the repressive apparatus of the state. His movements are restricted, his communications monitored, and his time is spent in ways that aren’t always of his choosing. All of this limits his interactions with the communities he has been away from for so long, the communities he wishes to engage with and be a part of. We must figure out how to lessen the impacts of these kinds of restrictions and how to enable as smooth a transition and homecoming as possible. We are thrilled to be facing these questions nine years earlier than we’d expected.
The focus of June 11th events this year will continue to include Eric by aiding him materially and emotionally during this transition and maintaining channels for political engagement concerning Eric's entrapment. Eric’s case remains one of the most obvious examples of the state targeting and entrapping anarchists in this country. But we must always remember that his case is in no way exceptional. Muslim communities have borne the brunt of these kinds of attacks from the FBI. We should always be finding ways to work in solidarity. Post release support is a vital component to our struggle, and we're obviously thrilled beyond words that Eric can walk and talk among friends and Earth according to his own desires again, and with every step we affirm that we want the destruction of all prisons.
The practices of ongoing solidarity should not solely serve as a soothing cultural custom: our actions carry potential for real material consequences – both positive and negative – for our imprisoned comrades. As we practice solidarity with imprisoned comrades and loved ones, our goal goes beyond simply supporting them; we aim to build social momentum against an entire system of domination and ecological destruction. These linkages add significance to all our gestures of solidarity, rendering them more potent tools on behalf of those inside, but also increasing the risks should these gestures be miscalculated or imprecise: as always, exercise care and sharp analysis when laying plans.
This reflection applies to the entire range of support projects, including fundraising. We hope though, that fundraisers also create spaces for discussion and struggle. A common anxiety among comrades facing long sentences is whether there will still be subversive projects and conversations underway when they get out. It’s up to all of us to make sure that there are, and that these projects and conversations are stronger, richer, and more vital. And it’s everyone’s letters to prisoners that ensure their ongoing connection to this process.
A specific element of this process is building our capacity for ongoing prisoner support. There have been both victories and setbacks over the past year as anarchist and other rebellious prisoners have waged struggles against their conditions, including both hunger and work strikes. Nikos Romanos’ hunger strike and the accompanying revolutionary solidarity reminded us of the subversive possibility of struggles coordinated across prison walls. But as anarchist prisoners, like Sean Swain in Ohio or Michael Kimble in Alabama, increasingly conduct similar fights in North America, the movement has frequently lacked the connections or strength required to offer meaningful solidarity. This is not a criticism of the dedicated support crews working with these rebel prisoners, but is directed to the rest of us, indicating the importance of generalizing active forms of solidarity with prisoners.
Generalizing solidarity means escaping the space of the small “activist scene” to allow surprising new relationships to form.
An important aspect of the long-term project of prisoner solidarity is maintaining old connections while building new connections with other prisoners in struggle. Recently released comrades Amelie and Fallon encompassed this idea well in their February open letter Generalizing solidarity means escaping the space of the small “activist scene” to allow surprising new relationships to form. Part of our proposal this year is to build stronger relations of solidarity with trans prisoners in struggle, both to offer immediate personal and political support, and to prepare to offer more meaningful aid in future struggles for safety, hormones/other medical resources, and dignity. We were inspired by Chelsea Manning, who won access to hormones despite very adverse conditions, dramatically indicating the possibility of future victories for other trans prisoners.
We will continue to adapt to a changing landscape produced both by the victories won by our imprisoned comrades – including Eric’s release, Marius’ coming out, Nikos Romanos’ seizure of “room to breathe,” and just in the past few days, the amazing homecoming of Amelie, Carlos, and Fallon, — and by ongoing transformations of the repressive machinery. These transitions mark the expansion of the project and not any sort of stopping point.
“The struggle is not over, it assumes new forms. For no matter what the face, no matter what the name, it’s still war.”
Thank you for all the solidarity you show, on June 11th or any day. It means everything.

Marius Mason is an anarchist, environmental, and animal rights prisoner. In March 2008, he was arrested by federal authorities for charges related to two acts of property destruction that occurred in 1999 and 2000 - damaging an office connected to GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) research, and destroying a piece of logging equipment. No one was injured in either act. He faced a life sentence before accepting a plea bargain in September 2008.
Mason was sentenced on February 5, 2009 in federal court in Lansing, Michigan. He received almost 22 years - the longest sentence of any Green Scare prisoner. An appeal for a reduction in his sentence was denied in 2010.
The Green Scare is the name given to the arrests of animal rights and environmental activists who have been charged with acts of economic sabotage. Federal authorities have sought outrageous sentences (often life in prison) and have publicly and legally labeled the activists as "terrorists" - despite the fact that no one has been killed or injured in any of the acts. For an intro to the Green Scare, see here.
Supporting Marius Mason does not mean agreeing with his acts. It does mean opposing the fear-mongering tactics of the federal government, and the outrageous sentences they have imposed.

Sean Swain is a hostage held by a lawless rogue-state calling itself “The State of Ohio.”1 He has been held without legal conviction or sentence since 1991 for the self-defense killing of a court official’s relative who broke into Sean’s home and threatened his life. In fall of 2012, prisoners calling themselves the Army of the 12 Monkeys (A12M) got rowdy at Mansfield Correctional, and the prison authorities assumed “that anarchist” Sean Swain must have been behind it and threw him in supermax isolation. Sean denies any involvement or affiliation with the A12M and is in the process of suing the ODRC for targetting him based exclusively on his ideology and political speech.
Sean is the only son of a retired auto worker and stay-home mom. He has renounced his high school diploma, his college degree, and his honorable discharge from the U.S. military. Before being taken hostage, Sean worked as a newspaper columnist and as a union organizer.
Sean is mounting his third run for Governor of Ohio in 2014. If elected, he promises to decommission the Ohio National Guard, empty Ohio’s prisons and turn them into squats, recognize Native American land rights as set forth by the Treaty of Greenville, arm the tribes with national guard weaponry, to include tanks and attack helicopters, refuse to sign any budget causing the government to shut down, and sign an Executive Order making it legal to assassinate him if he remains in office longer than 90 days.
Though innocent of any crime, and though he is held without legal conviction or sentence, Sean will only be liberated when the illegitimate power of the lawless rogue state holding him hostage is abolished once and for all.
The State started the war. Sean Swain intends to finish it.
To get up to date info about Sean, send an email to seanswain-subscribe@lists.riseup.net and you’ll be added to his email notification list. Thank you!

1.The Treaty of Greeneville in 1795 established most of Ohio as unceded “Indian Territory.” The so-called “State of Ohio” has no legal claim whatsoever to exercising authority over this territory.
2. See, Sean Paul Swain v. William Fullenkamp, et. al., U.S. District Court Case No. 3:09-CV-2659, Judge Jack Zouhary, Decision, 19MAY10, p. 2. Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel, Thomas Jefferson, Henry David Thoreau, Malcolm X, Emma Goldman, Huey Newton, Frantz Fanon, Abbie Hoffman, Ward Churchill, and Martin Luther King Jr., were all accused in their own times of “promoting anarchy and rebellion against authority.” It would seem Sean is in much greater company than is Judge Jack Zouhary.
Imprisoned since 1996 for a bank robbery done to fund political projects, he was sentenced to almost sixteen years. His sentence is now completed, but he is kept imprisoned indefinitely by a "preventative detention" law. He hopes to be released by 2023.

Alfredo Cospito (ten years and 8 months) and Nicola Gai (9 years and 4 months), from Turin, Italy, imprisoned for their shooting of Ansaldo Nuclear chief Roberto Adinolfi
sentencing statements:
"We'll get out of here branded as terrorists, the amusing thing is that
you can say that without seeming ridiculous: it is what the law states.
One thing sure is that words have lost all their meaning; if we are
terrorists, what would you call those who produce weapons, tracking
systems for missiles, drones, fighter-bombers, equipment to hunt people
trying to cross borders, nuclear power stations, those who do deals with
assassins in uniform and famous dictators, in other words, how would you
define Finmeccanica?"
Nicola Gai
"We saw Adinolfi smiling slyly and playing the victim from television
screens. We saw him lecturing against 'terrorism' in schools. But I
wonder: what is terrorism? A gunshot, a searing pain, an open wound or the
incessant, continuous threat of a slow death devouring you from inside?
The continuous incessant terror that one of their nuclear plants can vomit
death and desolation upon us all of a sudden?
Ansaldo Nucleare and Finmeccanica bear huge responsibilities. Their
projects continue to sow death everywhere. Recently the rumour has spread
of probable investments in the enlargement of the nuclear plant of Kryko,
Slovenia, a high seismic risk area very close to Italy. In Cernadova,
Romania, several incidents have occurred since 2000, caused by Ansaldo's
stupidity during the construction of one of their plants. How many lives
have been lost? How much blood shed? Technocrats of Anslado and
Finmeccanica, all facile smiles and a 'clean' conscience: your 'progress'
stinks of death, and the death you sow all over the world is shouting for
revenge."

In the late 1990s, Rubin is alleged to have participated in a spree of arsons that caused upwards of $55 million in damages as part of the Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front. Among her actions was the $12 million arson of a ski resort under construction in Vail, CO. She is among the targets of the FBI’s “Operation Backfire.” She is currently serving 5 years. She accepted a non-cooperating plea agreement.

Eric was arrested (along with Zachary Jenson and Lauren Weiner) on January 13, 2006, as part of the government's ongoing Green Scare campaign. All three were charged with "Conspiracy to damage and destroy property by fire and an explosives". His arrest was the direct result of a government informant - known only as "Anna"" - who spent a year and a half drawing him in and working with the FBI to fabricate a crime and implicate Eric in it. Anna was paid over $65,000 for her work with the FBI. Eric was imprisoned for what amounts to thought-crime - no actions were ever carried out, and Eric was charged with a single count of "conspiracy" - a powerful legal tool often used by the state to crush dissent.
Eric was denied bail twice - despite having no prior criminal record and no history of violence - and spent almost 2 years pre-trial in Sacramento County Main Jail in “Total Separation” - or solitary confinement. This meant that he had little to no contact with other prisoners or the outside world and was only allowed to leave his cell for a few hours each week. During that time he endured two separate hunger strikes to gain access to vegan food. He also endured two separate bouts of pericarditis - a heart condition which Eric had never experienced before his time at Sac County. Both of Eric's co-defendants caved under the threat of being imprisoned for 20 years and plead guilty to a lesser charge. In doing so, they agreed to testify against Eric and cooperate in every way possible, including testifying in front of secret grand jury proceedings.
After serving nearly 10 years in prison his judgment and sentencing were vacated when it became known that the FBI had failed to disclose potentially exculpatory evidence to the defense. Eric pleaded guilty to a lesser charge that carried a 5 year maximum sentence. He was released almost immediately. Eric is free!!

Michael Kimble is a 49-year-old, black, gay anarchist serving a life sentence in Alabama for the murder of a white, homophobic, racist bigot.
During his first years of imprisonment, Michael embraced communism, but soon moved away from it and toward anarchy because, as he describes it "anarchism is not about building a hierarchical structure for liberation somewhere in the distant future, but about living your life, now, in a fashion that's liberating."
Michael has a long history of both individual and collective struggle against prison authority, and continues to engage in the fight against prison slave labor as part of the Free Alabama Movement.

A former member of the hacking network Anonymous who has become a cause celebre for hacktivists, civil libertarians and those concerned about the rights of whistleblowers, is a gifted young computer programmer who is currently spending a decade in prison. His crime? Leaking information from the private intelligence firm Strategic Forecasting, information which revealed that Stratfor had been spying on human rights activists at the behest of corporations and the U.S. government.
In March 2012 Jeremy was arrested in his Chicago home and charged with violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the same legislation used to prosecute Aaron Swartz. This outdated law, written before the Internet was even created, gives absurdly broad powers to corporations and prosecutors to criminalize an array of online activity and pursue extreme and disproportionate sentences. By contrast, Jeremy's co-defendants in Ireland will not be prosecuted and in the U.K. none will spend more than 16 months in prison.
In a non-cooperating plea deal, Jeremy pled guilty to one count of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Despite lodging nearly 265 letters of support calling on judge Loretta Preska to show leniency, Jeremy was sentenced to the maximum allowed under his plea agreement.
Since his arrest, Jeremy has been denied bail, cut off from his family, and held in solitary confinement- treatment normally reserved for the most egregious offenses. He did nothing for personal gain and everything in hopes of making the world a better place and he needs our support now more than ever.

Walter Bond is an imprisoned Animal Liberation Front operative who in the Summer of 2010 was arrested for the A.L.F. Lone Wolf arsons of the Sheepskin Factory in Denver, Colorado, the Tandy Leather Factory in Salt Lake City, Utah and Tiburon Restaurant in Sandy, Utah.
On February 11, 2011, Bond was sentenced to 5 years in Federal prison for the Colorado fire, and on October 13, 2011, he was sentenced to 7 years, 3 months for the Utah fires, to run consecutive to the first sentence. He is currently incarcerated at USP Marion CMU. His expected release date is March 21, 2021.
Bond's experiences as a 19-year-old slaughterhouse construction worker propelled him into Veganism and a life focused on ending our culture's enslavement and exploitation of animals and the natural world. As a prisoner of the war for the liberation of Animals, Bond continues to influence and motivate other activists dynamically via his essays and public statements which have speedily transversed the globe over the internet and have been translated into several different languages. Always Looking Forward, published by Liberation Press in December 2011, is a collection of the articles and statements written by Bond while at county jail in Golden, Colorado and Farmington, Utah.
Walter Bond is Vegan Straight Edge and opposes the deadly and genocidal culture of drug abuse in the United States. He is the subject of the song "To Ashes" by the band Earth Crisis - which was inspired by Bond's previous incarceration from 1997 - 2001 for burning down the home and meth operation of a multi-million dollar drug dealer that was selling poison to his family and friends.
Walter Bond's entire philosophy and program of action is centered on these six words: "Animal liberation, whatever it may take!"

Bill Dunne is an anti-authoritarian sentenced to 90 years for the attempted liberation of comrades from Seattle’s King County Jail in 1979 and for attempting to break himself out of Leavenworth Penitentiary in 1983. Dunne was charged with possession of an automatic weapon, auto theft, and with aiding & abetting the escape. Charges further alleged the operation was financed by bank expropriations and facilitated by illegal acquisition of weapons and explosives. Bill and his codefendant, Larry Giddings, were accused by police of being “members of a small, heavily armed group of revolutionaries,” associated with the Wellspring Communion.
Dunne has made the rounds of the federal prison system with stints at the infamous Control Unit in Marion, Illinois; Atwater; and Big Sandy where he has assisted prisoners with political & academic education. Bill also organizes solidarity runs in conjunction with the Anarchist Black Cross Federation’s “Running Down the Walls” 5K runs and has edited and written for 4 Struggle magazine.
Larry Giddings was paroled from federal prison in 2004. Bill went before the parole board in the winter of 2014, was rejected and given a 15 year ‘hit’ (meaning he cannot go back to the board for that time period).
