Patrick Williams - Threshold (1973)
When I went to see Frank Zappa at the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City on 8 October 1975, there was incredible music playing before the show, so I walked over to the soundboard and asked what was playing and it was "Threshold" by Patrick Williams. I went out and bought the album as soon as I could!!!

Friday evening, October 12, 2012. Patrick Williams directs LA's finest in a moving concert of his music, as part of the LA Jazz Institute's "Groovin' Hard" event at the LAX Marriott.
Sorry for the poor quality of the video. I have an old camcorder, but I have yet to find a new one that delivers the sound I'm looking for--without using an external mic.
Many highlights here. The ensemble work is top-notch, as are the soloists. My seat didn't have a good sight-line, so I set up the camera on a tripod, put it on the side of the room, turned it on, and returned to my seat. No zooming, and not all the soloists are visible. In particular, the angle didn't show Jeff Driskill, who delivered several beautiful solos on tenor. Sorry about that.
But it was an amazing evening. There's nothing like "being there", but if this conveys even 10% of what it was like to experience this performance, it's still going to be worth your time. :)

Film festival
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.

Big band
A big band is a type of musical ensemble associated with playing jazz music and which became popular during the Swing Era from the early 1930s until the late 1940s. Big Bands evolved with the times and continue to today. A big band typically consists of approximately 12 to 25 musicians and contains saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section. The terms jazz band, jazz ensemble, stage band, jazz orchestra, and dance band are also used to refer to this type of ensemble. This does not, however, mean that each one of these names is technically correct for naming a 'big band" specifically.
In contrast to smaller jazz combos, in which most of the music is improvised, or created spontaneously, music played by big bands is highly "arranged", or prepared in advance and notated on sheet music. The music is traditionally called 'charts'. Improvised solos may be played only when called for by the arranger.
History and style
There are two distinct periods in the history of popular bands. Beginning in the mid-1920s, big bands, then typically consisting of 10–25 pieces, came to dominate popular music. At that time they usually played a form of jazz that involved very little improvisation, which included a string section with violins, which was dropped after the introduction of swing in 1935. A few bands also had violas and cellos, usually one or two along with them. The dance form of jazz was characterized by a sweet and romantic melody. Orchestras tended to stick to the melody as it was written and vocals would be sung (often in a tenor voice) and in tune with the melody.

An Evening With Patrick Williams, 10/12/2012
Friday evening, October 12, 2012. Patrick Williams directs LA's finest in a moving concert of his music, as part of the LA Jazz Institute's "Groovin' Hard" event at the LAX Marriott. Sorry for the poor quality of the video. I have an old camcorder, but I have yet to find a new one that delivers the sound I'm looking for--without using an external mic. Many highlights here. The ensemble work is top-notch, as are the soloists. My seat didn't have a good sight-line, so I set up the camera on a tripod, put it on the side of the room, turned it on, and returned to my seat. No zooming, and not all the soloists are visible. In particular, the angle didn't show Jeff Driskill, who delivered several beautiful solos on tenor. Sorry about that. But it was an amazing evening. Many highlights here. The ensemble work is top-notch, as are the soloists. My seat didn't have a good sight-line, so I set up the camera on a tripod, put it on the side of the room, turned it on, and returned to my seat. No zooming, and not all the soloists are visible. But it was an amazing evening. There's nothing like "being there", but if this conveys even 10% of what it was like to experience this performance, it's still going to be worth your time. :)

An Evening With Patrick Williams, 10/12/2012
Friday evening, October 12, 2012. Patrick Williams directs LA's finest in a moving concert of his music, as part of the LA Jazz Institute's "Groovin' Hard" event at the LAX Marriott. Sorry for the poor quality of the video. I have an old camcorder, but I have yet to find a new one that delivers the sound I'm looking for--without using an external mic. Many highlights here. The ensemble work is top-notch, as are the soloists. My seat didn't have a good sight-line, so I set up the camera on a tripod, put it on the side of the room, turned it on, and returned to my seat. No zooming, and not all the soloists are visible. In particular, the angle didn't show Jeff Driskill, who delivered several beautiful solos on tenor. Sorry about that. But it was an amazing evening. Friday evening, October 12, 2012. Patrick Williams directs LA's finest in a moving concert of his music, as part of the LA Jazz Institute's "Groovin' Hard" event at the LAX Marriott.
Sorry for the poor quality of the video. I have an old camcorder, but I have yet to find a new one that delivers the sound I'm looking for--without using an external mic.
Many highlights here. The ensemble work is top-notch, as are the soloists. My seat didn't have a good sight-line, so I set up the camera on a tripod, put it on the side of the room, turned it on, and returned to my seat. No zooming, and not all the soloists are visible. In particular, the angle didn't show Jeff Driskill, who delivered several beautiful solos on tenor. Sorry about that.
But it was an amazing evening. There's nothing like "being there", but if this conveys even 10% of what it was like to experience this performance, it's still going to be worth your time. :)

When I went to see Frank Zappa at the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City on 8 October 1975, there was incredible music playing before the show, so I walked over to the soundboard and asked what was playing and it was "Threshold" by Patrick Williams. I went out and bought the album as soon as I could!!!

Friday evening, October 12, 2012. Patrick Williams directs LA's finest in a moving concert of his music, as part of the LA Jazz Institute's "Groovin' Hard" event at the LAX Marriott.
Sorry for the poor quality of the video. I have an old camcorder, but I have yet to find a new one that delivers the sound I'm looking for--without using an external mic.
Many highlights here. The ensemble work is top-notch, as are the soloists. My seat didn't have a good sight-line, so I set up the camera on a tripod, put it on the side of the room, turned it on, and returned to my seat. No zooming, and not all the soloists are visible. In particular, the angle didn't show Jeff Driskill, who delivered several beautiful solos on tenor. Sorry about that.
But it was an amazing evening. There's nothing like "being there", but if this conveys even 10% of what it was like to experience this performance, it's still going to be worth your time. :)
