The Reichstag building is a historical edifice in Berlin, Germany, constructed to house the Imperial Diet, of the German Empire. This imposing building houses the Federal German Parliament or "Bundestag" and was originally completed in 1894 to meet the need of the newly-unified German Empire of the Kaisers' for a larger parliamentary building. The Reichstag was intended to resemble a Renaissance palace, and its architect, Paul Wallot, dedicated the building to the German people.
The Nazi leader Adolf Hitler exploited the fire which gutted the Reichstag building in 1933 by blaming the Communists for the arson and for attempted revolution. There is good evidence to suggest, however, that his followers were actually responsible and that this was a manufactured crisis. When German reunification became a reality, the new republic was proclaimed here at midnight on the 2nd October 1990.
The Reichstag has undergone considerable restoration and alteration. The building is now the second most visited attraction in Germany (after the Cologne Cathedral), not least because the addition of a spectacular glass dome designed by the British architect Norman Foster. The large glass dome at the very top of the Reichstag has a 360-degree view of the surrounding Berlin cityscape. The main hall of the parliament below can also be seen from inside the dome, and natural light from above radiates down to the parliament floor.
The Reichstag building is well known in the art world thanks to Paris-based Bulgarian artist Christo's mammoth 'Wrapped Reichstag' project in 1995. The entire building was swathed in silver cloth for two weeks that summer. You can visit the dome for free but you will need to register online in advance in order to do so.

Norman FOSTER - (1999) - Reichstag Dome (Berlin, Germany)
The current Reichstag dome is a glass dome constructed on top of the rebuilt Reichstag building in Berlin. It was designed by architect Norman Foster and built to symbolize the reunification of Germany. The distinctive appearance of the dome has made it a prominent landmark in Berlin. The Reichstag dome is a large glass dome with a 360 degree view of the surrounding Berlin cityscape. The debating chamber of the Bundestag, the German parliament, can be seen down below. A mirrored cone in the center of the dome directs sunlight into the building, and so that visitors can see the working of the chamber. The dome is open to the public and can be reached by climbing two steel, spiraling ramps that are reminiscent of a double-helix. The Dome symbolizes that the people are above the government, as was not the case during National Socialism. The glass dome was also designed by Foster to be environmentally friendly. Energy efficient features involving the use of the daylight shining through the mirrored cone were applied, effectively decreasing the carbon emissions of the building. The futuristic and transparent design of the Reichstag dome makes it a unique landmark, and symbolizes Berlin's attempt to move away from a past of Nazism and instead towards a future with a heavier emphasis on a united, democratic Germany.

In this video, I'm bringing you a time lapse recording of me doing a photo manipulation of the famous Reichstag building in Berlin Germany. The composition is intended to be the first project for my 3rd year architectural studio course. (architectural representation II)
Statement: in this composition I'm trying to convey the architectural resilience of the Reichstag building. Reichstag building has a rich history, as it was set on fire prior to WWII, and was viewed as the architectural embodiment of the Nazi Germany by the allies. In my composition however, I'm envisioning a Reichstag building in a time in which humanity is gone. It is by showing the harmonious symbiotic relationship between the building and the Nature that I voice my opinion: architectures are incredibly resilient, but can also be ironically vulnerable when human activities are involved.

The Reichstag building (German: Reichstagsgebäude; officially: Plenarbereich Reichstagsgebäude) is the German Parliament building. It is a landmark in the city of Berlin, and is centrally located close to both the Hauptbahnhof and the Brandenburg Gate. This video shows views of the Reichstag from the front and sides, as well as views inside the building and on the roof where the glass dome is situated. From here views over the city of Berlin are shown.
The large glass dome at the very top of the Reichstag has a 360-degree view of the surrounding Berlin cityscape. The main hall of the parliament below can also be seen from inside the dome, and natural light from above radiates down to the parliament floor. A large sun shield tracks the movement of the sun electronically and blocks direct sunlight which would not only cause large solar gain, but dazzle those below.
To enter the Reichstag it was necessary to pre-book a place online at the Reichstag website, which was free of charge.

In this video, I'm bringing you a time lapse recording of me doing a photo manipulation of the famous Reichstag building in Berlin Germany. The composition is intended to be the first project for my 3rd year architectural studio course. When German reunification became a reality, the new republic was proclaimed here at midnight on the 2nd October 1990.
The Reichstag has undergone considerable restoration and alteration. The building is now the second most visited attraction in Germany (after the Cologne Cathedral), not least because the addition of a spectacular glass dome designed by the British architect Norman Foster. The large glass dome at the very top of the Reichstag has a 360-degree view of the surrounding Berlin cityscape. The main hall of the parliament below can also be seen from inside the dome, and natural light from above radiates down to the parliament floor.
The Reichstag building is well known in the art world thanks to Paris-based Bulgarian artist Christo's mammoth 'Wrapped Reichstag' project in 1995. The entire building was swathed in silver cloth for two weeks that summer. You can visit the dome for free but you will need to register online in advance in order to do so.

In this video, I'm bringing you a time lapse recording of me doing a photo manipulation of the famous Reichstag building in Berlin Germany. The composition is intended to be the first project for my 3rd year architectural studio course. (architectural representation II)
Statement: in this composition I'm trying to convey the architectural resilience of the Reichstag building. Reichstag building has a rich history, as it was set on fire prior to WWII, and was viewed as the architectural embodiment of the Nazi Germany by the allies. In my composition however, I'm envisioning a Reichstag building in a time in which humanity is gone. It is by showing the harmonious symbiotic relationship between the building and the Nature that I voice my opinion: architectures are incredibly resilient, but can also be ironically vulnerable when human activities are involved.

The Reichstag building (German: Reichstagsgebäude; officially: Plenarbereich Reichstagsgebäude) is the German Parliament building. It is a landmark in the city of Berlin, and is centrally located close to both the Hauptbahnhof and the Brandenburg Gate. 27th February 1933: Arson attack causes the Reichstag Fire
On the 27th February 1933, the Reichstag building in Berlin was set on fire in an arson attack. Generally accepted to have been conducted by Dutch communist Marinus van der Lubbe, the fire provided the new Chancellor Adolf Hitler with an opportunity to consolidate Nazi control of the German government. Hitler had been appointed Chancellor on the 30th January, but had demanded new elections for the Reichstag. These were scheduled to take place on the 5th March, and Hitler hoped to increase the Nazi’s share of the seats in order to pass the Enabling Act and take control of political decisions for himself. Shortly after 9pm on the evening of the 27th February, Goebbels was informed that the Reichstag was on fire. Although the blaze was extinguished before midnight, the inside of the buildin... -

Hitler had been appointed Chancellor on the 30th January, but had demanded new elections for the Reichstag. These were scheduled to take place on the 5th March, and Hitler hoped to increase the Nazi’s share of the seats in order to pass the Enabling Act and take control of political decisions for himself.
Shortly after 9pm on the evening of the 27th February, Goebbels was informed that the Reichstag was on fire. Although the blaze was extinguished before midnight, the inside of the building was destroyed. Communists were declared responsible, and van der Lubbe was arrested.
The day after the fire, Hitler persuaded President Hindenburg to pass the emergency Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of People and State, which suspended many civil liberties and allowed the Nazis to arrest their opponents. Thousands of communists were rounded up by the SA, along with Social Democrats and liberals, and placed in so-called ‘protective custody’.
Van Der Lubbe was tried, convicted, and executed. Although there is debate over the exact circumstances of the fire, Sir Ian Kershaw says there is consensus among the vast majority of historians that he did set the fire. Whatever the circumstances, the situation was certainly exploited by the Nazis and was the first step in the creation of a single-party state.

The Reichstag building is a iconic historical edifice located in capital city centre of Berlin, Germany and before 1989 was the parliament of the German Democratic Republic (the Volkskammer). In 1999, after reconstruction became the meeting place of the German parliament (modern Bundestag). The glass dome at the top of the Reichstag building is open to tourists with a prior registration and it's famous for a 360-degree view of the surrounding Berlin cityscape.

Frankfurt airport''s duty manager Heinz Fass said that 216 domestic and international flights had been cancelled because of heavy snowfall.
Schoenefeld and Tegel airports in Berlin also reported delays and cancellations.
In Nuremberg, an Air Berlin plane slid off the runway and got stuck in the snow late Friday night.
Nobody was injured, but the airport was closed for more than two hours.
"I wanted to fly to Saarbrucken but the airport there has been closed because of the snow and the ice," said Doris Kerns, a traveller at the Berlin''s Tegel Airport.
"Now I''ve rebooked my flight to Frankfurt but this flight also has been cancelled. Now I am waiting to rebook again and I am waiting to see if I can travel to western Germany at all."
In France, the civil aviation authority ordered the cancellation of 25 percent of flights scheduled to leave Paris'' Charles de Gaulle airport on Saturday because of the snowstorms.
The authority made the announcement after the country''s national meteorological service warned of snowfall in the Paris area.
The bad weather was also delaying many of the remaining flights from Paris airports.

Beginnend mit der Kaiserzeit Ende des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts über die parlamentarische Entwicklung in der Weimarer Republik, durch die dunkelste Epoche nach der Machtübernahme durch die Nationalsozialisten führt ein bewegender Film die Zuschauer durch die Teilung Deutschlands über die Vollendung der deutschen Einheit bis hinein in die Gegenwart. “Quality is an attitude of mind.” The great architectural mastermind of our time Norman Foster, who turns 80 in June 2015, here reflects on a long and prosperous career – and life – with prominent buildings and more than 1,000 employees all over the world.
Foster has always considered technology to be an ally. As a child he was immensely excited by machines and their speed – he spent many hours making sketches of and reading about them. He left school at age 16, did National Service for two years, worked different jobs to earn money, but never abandoned his private world of drawing and dreaming. When he discovered that he as an architect could actually do the things that had always excited him, it simply didn’t feel like work.
Respecting the structure of a city or a place is essential: “I’ve realized the important links between individual buildings and infrastructure.” Architecture has to address the bigger issues and make a difference to the world we live in. Architects can’t solve every problem in the world, but what they can do, however, is to contribute by turning the complex into something simple via shape as well as material and being aware of the “urban glue” that binds everything together: “We have rethought, redesigned, reinvented. We have questioned and gone back to basics.”
Norman Robert Foster (b. 1935) is an English architect and designer, who is considered one of the most prolific architects of his generation. He is the founder of Foster and Partners (1967) and responsible for renowned buildings such as London City Hall and Millennium Bridge (London), Reichstag (Berlin), Bilbao Metro, Hearst Tower (New York), Hong Kong International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport and Apple Spaceship Headquarters (est. 2016). Foster, who is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers and winner of the society’s highest award, The Minerva Medal, has received several awards such as the Pritzker-prize in 1999 (often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture), the Stirling Prize in 1998 and 2004, as well as the Aga Khan Award for Architecture – the biggest architectural award in the world – for the University of Technology Petronas in Malaysia (2007). He was knighted in 1990, and in 1999 he was created a life peer, as Baron Foster of Thames Bank, of Reddish in the County of Greater Manchester.

This wonderful week was spent in the beautiful, amazing city of Berlin, Germany. All PPPlers had to travel to Berlin for the week for our final seminar, our Abschlusseminar. On Tuesday Trez and I arrived there, explored around, and drank a beer. We made it to the hostel which was actually kind of neat. We met all the other PPPlers there and had our opening seminar shortly thereafter. Wednesday was full of seminars, telling about our experiences, talking amonst ourselves, seeing how we've grown, etc. Thursday was started off by going to the US Embassy near the Brandenburg Gate and meeting all of the other highschool PPPlers and scholarship receivers from different programs. Later on, we went to the Reichstag building (parliament building) and saw many important people such as representatives, congressmen, and the Bundestag President. Friday, we went back to the Reichstag to see a few speeches celebrating the 65th year of the Basic German Law. Even Angela Merkel was at this meeting, although I was a bit sad that she didn't speak. The last day the Cologne 6-pack ate together and we parted ways. Until Frankfurt to all of my fellow PPPlers!

As he explains to the officers that his brakes don’t work, they begin pulling him from the car without allowing him to unbuckle his seat belt ...
