The Cimbri, a Viking tribe originating from Jütland, Denmark, settled on the Asiago plateau, northern Italy.

In 1709 the King of Denmark and Norway, Frederick IV, visited the Sette Comuni and witnessed a strange event: on his way home after a long tour of Italy the King had visited many cities including Vicenza, and had heard of this small Nation on the plateau who traced their origins back to the Cimbri, the very same people who lives in Denmark. Intrigued and keen to learn more, he travelled up to the Asiago plateau to be greeted by the people shouting "Hoch ünser König!" (long live our King!). The King was so astonished and pleased, as ancient documents reveal, that he declared that not even in his court could such elegant speech be heard.

The Roman Empire was the largest and most powerful in history, but how did ancient Rome achieve its greatness? And why did it eventually collapse? In this epic series, we explore these questions, following the most dramatic Roman characters as they lead an empire slowly sliding to its own destruction and the Barbarian leaders who brought about that destruction. We vividly recreate the living environment of the time: teeming Roman streets, struggling armies, gladiators, Roman excesses and debauchery, the camps and villages of the barbarians, and the deeply human struggle of outsiders to conquer and Romans to survive.
Episode 1: The First Barbarian War
It is 113 BC Rome is a Republic, a small empire that clings to the rim of the Mediterranean. Though a democracy in name and spirit, a man must be rich and from the noble class to hold the highest offices, both political and military.
The system has worked well for three centuries. But now a barbarian horde known as the Cimbri smashes through the northern imperial border. One humiliating defeat follows another, with losses of hundreds of thousands of Roman legionaries. Terror grips Rome and drives her into the arms of General Marius.
Though he is a commoner, he has a brilliant military mind. To defeat the Cimbri, Marius will transform the Roman army and shake the Republic's political foundations to the core. It is a turning point for the Republic. Faced with the savage Cimbri, Rome must decide between dictatorship or annihilation

A strikingly stylish documentary shot in secure, lengthy black & white shots which almost look like photos thanks to the calm they radiate. The breathes a mood of contemplation. The direct motivation for making I Cimbri was the request by language researchers to document the almost extinct language of a small community. The group in question was the Zimbern or Cimbri, mountain dwellers in a spur of the Alps not far from Verona. The language of the Zimbern, which derived in the Middle Ages as a mixture of German and Italian dialects, is hardly spoken any more. The film was hot in the village of Giazza, where a couple of old people were still able to speak it (partly). Schreiner's interest was however not primarily ethnographic. It is significant that there is not much speaking done in the film, silence would appear to be more important. Schreiner likes to adopt an intuitive approach; the film was made without a prior plan, as the observations were made, and edited with as much feeling. I Cimbri comprises shots of people who stare into the camera silently for long periods; they are not in a hurry and do not talk more than necessary. The film is more a meditation than a reflection; the loss of a specific way of living and working, in harmony with the natural surroundings, is not presented but is made tangible. In Giazza a culture disappears before the eye of the camera while it has long since gone elsewhere in Europe. And the soundtrack records the 'original sound' just as precisely and eloquently, because 'silence' in Giazza is the same as the noise of modern society.

The Cimbri were a tribe from Northern Europe, who, together with the Teutones and the Ambrones threatened the Roman Republic in the late 2nd century BC. The Cimbri were probably Germanic, though some believe them to be of Celtic origin. The ancient sources located their original home in Jutland, in present-day Denmark, which was referred to as the Cimbrian peninsula throughout antiquity (Ancient Greek: Κιμβρικὴ Χερσόνησος / Kimbrikē Chersonēsos).
Archaeologists have not found any clear indications of a mass migration from Jutland in the early Iron Age. The Gundestrup Cauldron, which was deposited in a bog in Himmerland in the 2nd or 1st century BC, shows that there was some sort of contact with southeastern Europe, but it is uncertain if this contact can be associated with the Cimbrian expedition.
Advocates for a northern homeland point to Greek and Roman sources that associate the Cimbri with the peninsula of Jutland, Denmark. According to the Res gestae (ch. 26) of Augustus, the Cimbri were still found in the area around the turn of the First Century AD:

In 1709 the King of Denmark and Norway, Frederick IV, visited the Sette Comuni and witnessed a strange event: on his way home after a long tour of Italy the King had visited many cities including Vicenza, and had heard of this small Nation on the plateau who traced their origins back to the Cimbri, the very same people who lives in Denmark. Intrigued and keen to learn more, he travelled up to the Asiago plateau to be greeted by the people shouting "Hoch ünser König!" (long live our King!). The King was so astonished and pleased, as ancient documents reveal, that he declared that not even in his court could such elegant speech be heard.

The film is more a meditation than a reflection; the loss of a specific way of living and working, in harmony with the natural surroundings, is not presented but is made tangible. In Giazza a culture disappears before the eye of the camera while it has long since gone elsewhere in Europe. And the soundtrack records the 'original sound' just as precisely and eloquently, because 'silence' in Giazza is the same as the noise of modern society.
