Life on Earth 004 - Bacteria
Paul Andersen describes the defining characteristics of the domain Eubacteria. He begins with a quick description of the phylogeny of bacteria and horizontal gene transfer. He then surveys the structures of a bacteria; nucleoid region, capsule, pilli, cell wall with peptidoglycan, flagella. He describes the differing morphologies and metabolism in different bacteria. He describes how bacteria can be Gram positive or Gram negative. He finishes with a brief discussion of quorum sensing.

There’s a good amount of bacteria facts that show the magnitude of influence bacteria play in our lives. Typically a few micrometers in length, bacteria come in all sorts of shapes ranging from sphere, rods, and spirals. Bacteria were also among the first life forms to appear on Earth and can be found pretty much everywhere (literally everywhere). They inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, even radioactive waste. Here’s something for you to think about. There are approximately 5×10^30 bacteria on Earth and are vital in recycling nutrients. In fact, did you know that bacteria are critically important to our lives? Actually, you wouldn’t even be alive if it weren’t for bacteria since they are responsible for a host of beneficial attributes such as strengthening our immune system, improving our skin’s function, improving our bowel regularity, even protecting our DNA! However, they can also be the cause of catastrophic effects such as infectious diseases that include cholera, syphilis, anthrax, leprosy, and tuberculosis (which is responsible for killing about 2 million people per year). And get this, there are approximately ten times as many bacterial cells in the human flora as there are human cells in the body (YIKES!). From the strongest bacteria on earth to their alarming quantities these are 25 Bacteria Facts That Might Make You Feel Dirty.

Do these bacteria facts make you feel dirty?
An average desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet
Actinomycetes are a bacteria that cause the familiar smell of rain
Mobile phones actually have 18 times more bacteria than toilet seat handles
Scientists discovered over 1,458 species of bacteria in the human belly button
Sweat is odorless. It is the bacteria that mingle with your sweat that make your armpits smell bad
A clean mouth can have anywhere between 1,000 and 100,000 bacteria on every single tooth
Contrary to what your mother told you, chocolate has an anti-bacterial effect on your mouth and actually helps prevent tooth decay
Tap water has a shelf life of 6 months because after that, the chlorine begins to dissipate and bacteria grows
A certain type of bacteria inhabits hairsprays
Dollar bills have on average about 3,000 different types of bacteria
When two people kiss they exchange anywhere between 10 million and 1 billion bacteria
In 2007 scientists revived 8 million year old bacteria from the Antarctic ice
1/5 of coffee mugs in your office have fecal matter on them
Every 20 minutes new bacteria grow on the kitchen sponge
Computer keyboards can have up to 200 times more bacteria than toilet seats
The strongest bacteria on Earth are gonorrhea. They can pull nearly 10,000 times their weight.
Since kangaroos rarely release methane, scientists are trying to harvest the bacteria in their colons so that they can transfer this ability to livestock (in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions)
Honey naturally contains Botulism bacteria. Babies can't process it and is the reason you shouldn't give them honey.
Offices that have more male workers have more bacteria on average
There is a species of bacteria that is so resistant to radiation that scientists have called it "Conan the Bacterium"
Beans increase flatulence because they carry a type of sugar called oligosaccharides which release gas as bacteria attempt to break them down
In 2013, scientists in New Zealand found a bacteria that is resistant to every form of antibiotics known to man
Babies are born bacteria free, as in there is no bacteria in their body at all
The New York Subway has been found to have 15,152 different forms of life, from bacteria all the way to insects
The hull of the Titanic will be completely consumed by bacteria within the next 20 years

This disease will literally eat you alive. It's the flesh eating bacteria, and here's what you need to know to survive.
Today's topic was requested by Keepin It Karl. If you have any other topics you'd like to learn about, be sure to subscribe and write your suggestions in the comments section below.
What is it?
Flesh eating bacteria is more formally known as Necrotizing fasciitis. It's caused by these bacteria listed here entering the body through cuts, insect bites, eating undercooked contaminated meats or seafoods, or sharing dirty needles. Once it takes hold, it rapidly destroys your skin, muscle, and fat tissue.
Where is it located?
The flesh eating disease can be found everywhere throughout the world, since it's caused by harmful bacteria infecting your skin and subcutaneous tissue primarily through food and open wounds. There are about 600-700 cases in the U.S. every year with about 25%-30% resulting in death.
How will it kill you?
Symptoms of Necrotizing fasciitis begin with intense pain at the site of trauma, which becomes inflamed, swollen, and discolored. The infection then quickly progresses within hours as the bacteria destroys the skin and muscle tissue by releasing toxins (Streptococcal pyogenic exotoxins) that ultimately lead to death. Mortality rates have been reported to be as high as 73% if the flesh eating bacteria is left untreated.
How to survive:
Early diagnosis and treatment are absolutely necessary upon infection in order to determine the right antibiotics to take. Those suffering from an aggressive infection MUST have the infected tissue surgically removed in order to keep the flesh eating bacteria from spreading. In some cases, amputation may be required. Repeat and follow-up surgeries are also typically necessary in order to remove additional necrotic tissue as well as skin grafting to close the large, open wounds the infection may have caused.
Now would you rather…be bit by a blue-ringed octopus? Or be stung by an Asian giant hornet?

30% of those around you carry this bacterium. It’s MRSA, and even people in the best health may still be infected. This medical video will tell you all about it.
What is it?
MRSA, which stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas, is living microscopic bacteria that causes severe infections throughout your body. Its principal characteristic is its resistance to certain antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins. Because it’s so difficult to treat, it’s been nicknamed in the dermatology world as “the super bug.”
Where is it located?
MRSA was first discovered in 1961 and since then can be found everywhere from hospitals and nursing homes to daycares, military bases, and prisons. It most commonly affects those with weak immune systems such as children and the elderly, where it thrives in hotspots like your nose and underarms. The first American case appeared in 1968.
How will it kill you?
MRSA infections occur from direct contact with an infected person or object, such as razors, towels, and sports equipment. The bacteria attaches to your skin then enters your bloodstream via wounds on your skin, lung inhalation, and even the urinary tract. Infection initially begins with a painful red swelling on the skin called cysts, then progresses to breathing difficulties, fever, and the chills. Death occurs when these conditions are left untreated.
How to survive:
The most effective method of reducing your risk of infection is through proper hygiene. This includes washing your hands with soap and water, regular showers after exercising, and keeping your wounds clean with bandages and ointments. Infections can usually be treated with strong antibiotics. But MRSA is constantly adapting and building its resistance to these treatments, so hospitals and researchers are continually developing new medicines to keep up with its ever-changing state.
Now what do you think is worse, and why? Being infected with leprosy? Or being infected with flesh-eating bacteria?

Right now, you are inhabited by trillions of microorganisms. Many of these bacteria are harmless (or even helpful!), but there are a few strains of ‘super bacteria’ that are pretty nasty -- and they’re growing resistant to our antibiotics. Why is this happening? Kevin Wu details the evolution of this problem that presents a big challenge for the future of medicine.
Lesson by Kevin Wu, animation by Brett Underhill.

Thereafter, the rod-shaped E. coli change shape into round-shaped bdelloplasts (see main text) that form after B. bacteriovorus has successfully invaded the prey. After this invasion, one can observe the rapid disappearance of single fluorescent E. coli because of lysis. No such lysis occurs without the presence of B. bacteriovorus. The observation that large quantities of prey bacteria accumulate in part of the habitat patch is not uniquely observed in this movie, but the exact location varies between experiments. Large diffusionally coupled medium reservoirs (1) run along the microhabitat array and supply e.g. fresh nutrients to the habitats from the top and bottom. The time difference between frames is 20 minutes.

All food contains bacteria, and raw milk contains an abundance of bacteria, some of which is harmful to humans. Along with the grass dairy cows graze upon, they consume microbes considered human pathogens. Milk in its raw state is a natural environment that promotes microbial growth. Among the microbes present in milk are some that cause diarrhea, vomiting, inflammatory bowel syndrome, consumption and fever. If milk is boiled sufficiently to kill all the bacteria and make it sterile, it loses a significant amount of its taste and nutritional value. Pasteurization, or heating it to a high temperature, kills some of the bacteria and retards the action of some enzymes so that the milk is not dangerous, stores longer than it otherwise would, but is still tasty and nutritious.

The bacteria that the media like to refer to as 'superbugs' are already having undermining the health of millions of people around the world.
The term refers to bacteria that have become resistant to almost all antibiotics currently in use.
In this growing public health crisis, superbugs are already behind infections that take the lives of an estimated 700,000 people every year.
And without radical new advances, that figure could rise to ten million people a year by 2050, researchers say.
On this Inside Story we look at how our actions are making antibiotics less and less effective against certain kinds of bacteria. And we ask, what can be done to reverse the trend?

What are bacteria? How do antibiotics work? And what can we do about increasing antibiotic resistance? Jenny Rohn, scientist and novelist, investigates the fascinating world of bacteria in this Friday Evening Discourse event from the Ri.

Bacteria are our ancient enemies, evolving ever more clever ways of outmanoeuvring our natural defences and scientific technologies. For millennia, a simple cut or cough could kill. With the development of antibiotics, it seemed we would reign supreme.
But now the bacteria are again gaining ground.
With antibiotic resistance on the rise, and the development of new drugs having stagnated for decades, we humans might be in a lot of trouble very soon. Why are bacteria so insidious, what tricks do they employ to get the upper hand, and what can we do to stop them? Join Dr Jenny Rohn to explore these questions.
Dr Jenny Rohn received a BA in Biology from Oberlin College, Ohio, where she developed an interest in viruses and cancer before moving to the University of Washington for her PhD research into the evolution of feline leukaemia virus.
After working as a researcher at Cancer Research UK and working in the biotechology industry in The Netherlands, Jenny gained a Wellcome Trust fellowship to study cell shape and architecture at University College London. She is now head of a cell biology lab where she studies how the cells of our body interact with invading bacteria.
This event took place at the Royal Institution on Friday 30 January.

Autoimmune Disease Gut Bacteria & Akkermansia muciniphila w/ Alanna Collen

Alanna Collen is a British science writer with degrees in biology from Imperial College London, and a PhD in evolutionary biology from University College London and the Zoological Society of London. In this episode we discuss the details of her book, 10% Human: How Your Body’s Microbes Hold the Key to Health and Happiness.
12:53 An Evolutionary Reason for Obesity: If obesity is the result of an inbuilt need to eat as much as possible, than, from an evolutionary standpoint, obesity would have positive effects on our health. Dr. Collen is not sure that obesity is an evolutionary process, and considers the possibility that it may be a pathological process.
16:08 The Role of Our Gut Bacteria: Our gut bacteria act as an intermediary between us and our environment. We cannot change our genes, but we can change how they express themselves. That’s epigenetics. We can influence gut bacteria more directly, which affects our epigenetics. Our gut bacteria play a huge role in influencing disease and our overall health.
17:29 How Does Gut Bacteria Influence Our Genes? The human genome is made up of genes and gene segments from other organisms, especially viruses. Gut bacteria’s main contribution to our genes is in controlling our immune system and its reaction to other things. It reaches far beyond allergies and autoimmunity to mental illness and obesity. If our immune system is not calmed by the microbes, inflammation begins. Inflammation has a large role in mental health and obesity.
21:55 Change of Perspective in the Field of Nutrition: For years in nutrition, we have been concerned with what happens in the small intestine. That is where our enzymes are created to break down our foods to enter the bloodstream. We thought of the large intestine as a place where water is absorbed and where stools are formed. Traditionally, we have not been concerned with the biochemical processes that go on in the large intestine. But we now find that what out gut microbes do in the large intestine and elsewhere is very important to nutrition, appetite regulation and the way we store energy.
24:14 Foods That Promote Microbial Diversity: General consensus is that eating fiber in the form of plant based food is best for microbiome diversity. These fibrous foods include peas, onions, leeks, whole grains, leafy vegetables and some fruits. Try to increase plant based foods over animal based foods and you will increase your diversity.
26:46 Akkermansia: Akkermansia is a bacterium, which is naturally present in the human gut. Levels fall with obesity. Lower levels of akkermansia in the gut are linked to thinner mucus lining in the gut and a more permeable gut lining, allowing leakage. The hypothesis is that lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which coats the cells of some bacteria, is getting into the bloodstream, activating the immune system, causing inflammation and changing the whether our adipose tissue/fat cells use energy or stores it. Perhaps supplementing with akkermansia can assist in weight loss.
29:06 Dietary Fat: Often when researchers do animal studies on high fat diets, they use extreme amounts of fat, maybe 60 to 70% fat. What we consider a high fat diet in humans is in the range of 30 to 45%. In one study, rats were fed an extremely high fat diet and they were supplemented with prebiotics/fiber. With the addition of fiber, there was less effect from the fat on the body. The gut lining remained tight, so LPS was less able to get into the bloodstream and the rats were resistant to becoming obese.
32:58 Gut Microbiome and Autism and Autoimmunity: It has been observed that children with autism have more severe gastrointestinal disturbances than neurotypical children. Autistic children also have differences in gut bacteria from neurotypical children. What compounds are being produced from those bacteria, what those compounds do and how they affect the brain, is being researched.
38:11 Gender Differences in Autoimmunity: Once people pass puberty, most autoimmune diseases affect women far more than they affect men. Autoimmunity that strikes before puberty, affects boys more than girls. Autism affects far more boys than girls. There seems to be an effect of hormones on autoimmunity. One reason a woman’s hormones differ from that of a man’s is because there is a need to accept the fetus, rather than reject it as a foreign body. These hormones affect gut microbes and the immune system.
41:04 How Can We Improve Out Gut Microbiome? Besides eating a higher plant fiber diet, avoiding unnecessary antibiotics is critical to gut health. Nearly 50% of all antibiotics prescribed are unnecessary. We should ask our doctor if we can get better without taking antibiotics and ask about the risks of not taking them. Our food can also contain antibiotics through our meats.
