1. Do what you really really love
Before becoming an author, Greene estimates that he worked 80 jobs.
2. Think like an outsider
In 1995, he worked as a writer at Fabrica, an art school in Italy, and met a book packager named Joost Elffers.

Robert Greene tells us about the masters of history and states that he is baffled that there are no books on being a master, the highest state of intelligence that humans can achieve.
Upon researching for his book on mastery he made 3 discoveries. The Source of mastery, the process on how to get to that mastery and the high level creative intuition that comes from achieving the end goal of mastery.
He then goes on to tell of the story of Leonardo Di Vinci; his life, obsessions and amazing attention to detail on a scientific level that lead to him being one of, if not the greatest master that ever lived.
He then says that in life there are 3 stages of learning, you learn from your parents, then school and then the real world. What the real world has to teach is completely contradictory to the other two learning stages. In the real world you can be whatever you want to be.
Secondly he goes on to talk about the story of Charles Darwin as an example of an iconic apprenticeship and how at 26 years old during his visit to the Galapagos Islands the theory of evolution and natural selection dawned on him after being exposed to this intense variety of life and learning so much.
The point of an apprenticeship is to immerse yourself in an environment where you have the maximum opportunities to learn. He mentions that 'Social Intelligence' is one of the most important things because you could be the most knowledgeable person in your field but if you don't know how to deal with people then forget it. The Apprenticeship stage is in your 20 where instead of perusing money and fame you should be acquiring the skillset that's going to serve you well through life.
Finally, as an example of how even music can conform to this path to mastery, he tells the story of John Coltrane, the greatest Jazz artist who ever lived. To truly develop his own style he studied and mastered all other genres and techniques of Jazz so that he could combine that knowledge and express himself in a way that connected with so many people.
We have a romantic notion that creativity is free, spontaneous and natural but it requires knowledge. He talks of his notion of the 'Creative Active' where the brain reaches a point when it's absorbed so much information that the it awakens naturally with creative energy and it starts associating and connecting things that have never been connected before. He concludes by saying your uniqueness is your gift to the world and if you don't keep developing who you are and mastering your field you basically just end up imitating those that came before you.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Robert Greene. For those of you who don’t know who he is, he’s a New York Times bestselling author of books like “The 48 Laws of Power” and the “ The Art of Seduction.” Robert is not just your typical author though. Unlike many successful people today who like to hide mistakes from their younger years, Robert is very open to telling stories about his drug-fueled past, especially with hallucinogens like Peyote. His work and advice is so relevant that it’s been quoted by the likes of Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes. If that isn’t enough street cred for you, he also wrote a book with 50 Cent, “The 50th Law,” a book which focuses on being fearless and facing tough hardships to succeed.

Robert Greene (born May 14, 1959) is an American author known for his books on strategy, power and seduction.
Greene was born in 1959 to a Jewish family in Los Angeles. He attended University of California, Berkeley and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A in classical studies. Before becoming a best-selling author, he worked as an editor and writer for several magazines, including Esquire, and as a Hollywood movie writer His first book was the 1998 The 48 Laws of Power. The book was immediately successful, selling more than 1 million copies in the US. His subsequent books shared similar success, including The Art of Seduction and The 33 Strategies of War. He also works as a consultant to several business executives, and joined the American Apparel board of directors in 2007. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Greene's work has been enthusiastically embraced by many in the hip hop community, and the 48 Laws of Power has been mentioned in songs by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake, Young Buck and others. Multi-platinum rapper Busta Rhymes is said to have received a special copy of The 48 Laws of Power with his name inscribed on the cover, which he used to deal with problematic movie producers. In 2009 Greene released his fourth book, The 50th Law, an elaboration of his ideas on power in context of the life of the rapper 50 Cent.

Upon researching for his book on mastery he made 3 discoveries. The Source of mastery, the process on how to get to that mastery and the high level creative intuition that comes from achieving the end goal of mastery. He then goes on to tell of the story of Leonardo Di Vinci; his life, obsessions and amazing attention to detail on a scientific level that lead to him being one of, if not the greatest master that ever lived. He then says that in life there are 3 stages of learning, you learn from your parents, then school and then the real world. What the real world has to teach is completely contradictory to the other two learning stages. In the real world you can be whatever you want to be. Secondly he goes on to talk about the story of Charles Darwin as an example of an iconic apprenticeship and how at 26 years old during his visit to the Galapagos Islands the theory of evolution and natural selection dawned on him after being exposed to this intense variety of life and learning so much. The point of an apprenticeship is to immerse yourself in an environment where you have the maximum opportunities to learn. He mentions that 'Social Intelligence' is one of the most important things because you could be the most knowledgeable person in your field but if you don't know how to deal with people then forget it. The Apprenticeship stage is in your 20 where instead of perusing money and fame you should be acquiring the skillset that's going to serve you well through life. Finally, as an example of how even music can conform to this path to mastery, he tells the story of John Coltrane, the greatest Jazz artist who ever lived. To truly develop his own style he studied and mastered all other genres and techniques of Jazz so that he could combine that knowledge and express himself in a way that connected with so many people. We have a romantic notion that creativity is free, spontaneous and natural but it requires knowledge. He talks of his notion of the 'Creative Active' where the brain reaches a point when it's absorbed so much information that the it awakens naturally with creative energy and it starts associating and connecting things that have never been connected before. He concludes by saying your uniqueness is your gift to the world and if you don't keep developing who you are and mastering your field you basically just end up imitating those that came before you. Robert Greene tells us about the masters of history and states that he is baffled that there are no books on being a master, the highest state of intelligence that humans can achieve.
Upon researching for his book on mastery he made 3 discoveries. The Source of mastery, the process on how to get to that mastery and the high level creative intuition that comes from achieving the end goal of mastery.
He then goes on to tell of the story of Leonardo Di Vinci; his life, obsessions and amazing attention to detail on a scientific level that lead to him being one of, if not the greatest master that ever lived.
He then says that in life there are 3 stages of learning, you learn from your parents, then school and then the real world. What the real world has to teach is completely contradictory to the other two learning stages. In the real world you can be whatever you want to be.
Secondly he goes on to talk about the story of Charles Darwin as an example of an iconic apprenticeship and how at 26 years old during his visit to the Galapagos Islands the theory of evolution and natural selection dawned on him after being exposed to this intense variety of life and learning so much.
The point of an apprenticeship is to immerse yourself in an environment where you have the maximum opportunities to learn. He mentions that 'Social Intelligence' is one of the most important things because you could be the most knowledgeable person in your field but if you don't know how to deal with people then forget it. The Apprenticeship stage is in your 20 where instead of perusing money and fame you should be acquiring the skillset that's going to serve you well through life.
Finally, as an example of how even music can conform to this path to mastery, he tells the story of John Coltrane, the greatest Jazz artist who ever lived. To truly develop his own style he studied and mastered all other genres and techniques of Jazz so that he could combine that knowledge and express himself in a way that connected with so many people.
We have a romantic notion that creativity is free, spontaneous and natural but it requires knowledge. He talks of his notion of the 'Creative Active' where the brain reaches a point when it's absorbed so much information that the it awakens naturally with creative energy and it starts associating and connecting things that have never been connected before. He concludes by saying your uniqueness is your gift to the world and if you don't keep developing who you are and mastering your field you basically just end up imitating those that came before you.

He talks of his notion of the 'Creative Active' where the brain reaches a point when it's absorbed so much information that the it awakens naturally with creative energy and it starts associating and connecting things that have never been connected before. He concludes by saying your uniqueness is your gift to the world and if you don't keep developing who you are and mastering your field you basically just end up imitating those that came before you.

On top of my personal story of facing my fears & anxiety I share my thoughts on all chapters in this incredible, life-changing book. I don’t know where I would be without it.
On Intense Realism,
We live in an age of generalized anxiety. We fear not, if we’ll survive the next attack from an enemy tribe, if we’ll gather and hunt enough natural resources to sustain ourselves or if we’ll find shelter and warmth nearby a fireplace in a cave. While the intensity of the dangers we face lessened throughout human evolution, our sense of fear, an emotion that kept us alive, manifested in a different form, one that greatly limits our potential and our worries dramatically grew in number.
Instead of real threats, we began to fear the loss of material wealth, worry about our status in society, about what the unknown future will bring, about illness and growing old, things as petty and nonessential as the uneducated opinions of people we personally dislike. Not until we have a near death experience or almost lose one of our loved ones are we reminded of what truly matters. And it’s at this point, when we live through a tragedy, that we are aware, that we see the world through our heart… for a couple of days, maybe even weeks, until we forget and get sucked back into focusing on our next promotion, social acceptance and superficial qualities.
See the reality of the world you live in. Question the status quo. Knowledge is power. The more you obtain of it the better off you are. Remind yourself of what’s important to you and what isn’t constantly. We’ve been wired in a way that makes us pay more attention to the negative and black out the positive. You’re aware of this and you don’t let yourself be seduced by comfortable lies, constant outrage and wishful thinking.
Key to living fearless / facing your fears (there’s no difference, it’s really just semantics) is knowing your environment like the back of your hand.
On Mortality,
We are going to die. There is no way around it. You fear death, because you fear life. If you were living life to the fullest, you’d be prepared to die at any moment. Like let’s imagine for a second, this was our final destination, I know it’s a scary thought, but bear with me. If we asked ourselves right now “Did I truly live the life I wanted and make the most out of it?” The answer for most of us is “No, not really.”, but here’s the positive. It’s not too late for us, we’re very fortunate to have opportunities that our ancestors couldn’t even dream up. You can start right now and if you’ve already started, you can keep going. Every morning you wake up is a blessing. You might not see that, because you hate your job, I’ve been there, but that doesn’t mean you hate life. Your job is the problem. It’s designed to waste your life, so the people you’re working for live all the memories & stories that you deserve. You want a reason to subscribe? I’ll go hard on this subject very soon, on how to make the system work for you, not the other fucking way around.
Live an extraordinary life. Your days are numbered. You won’t get another chance. This is what you’ve got. You can play and win the game with the hand you’ve been dealt. It’s up to you how well you execute, no matter the circumstances you were born in. You might have to work harder than everybody else in order for it to pay off in the end, but you can’t expect anything, if you waste your time. Eventually, every second you chose to sacrifice for immediate gratification will accumulate and hit you hard. On top of my personal story of facing my fears & anxiety I share my thoughts on all chapters in this incredible, life-changing book. I don’t know where I would be without it.
On Intense Realism,
We live in an age of generalized anxiety. We fear not, if we’ll survive the next attack from an enemy tribe, if we’ll gather and hunt enough natural resources to sustain ourselves or if we’ll find shelter and warmth nearby a fireplace in a cave. While the intensity of the dangers we face lessened throughout human evolution, our sense of fear, an emotion that kept us alive, manifested in a different form, one that greatly limits our potential and our worries dramatically grew in number.
Instead of real threats, we began to fear the loss of material wealth, worry about our status in society, about what the unknown future will bring, about illness and growing old, things as petty and nonessential as the uneducated opinions of people we personally dislike. Not until we have a near death experience or almost lose one of our loved ones are we reminded of what truly matters. And it’s at this point, when we live through a tragedy, that we are aware, that we see the world through our heart… for a couple of days, maybe even weeks, until we forget and get sucked back into focusing on our next promotion, social acceptance and superficial qualities.
See the reality of the world you live in. Question the status quo. Knowledge is power. The more you obtain of it the better off you are. Remind yourself of what’s important to you and what isn’t constantly. We’ve been wired in a way that makes us pay more attention to the negative and black out the positive. You’re aware of this and you don’t let yourself be seduced by comfortable lies, constant outrage and wishful thinking.
Key to living fearless / facing your fears (there’s no difference, it’s really just semantics) is knowing your environment like the back of your hand.
On Mortality,
We are going to die. There is no way around it. You fear death, because you fear life. If you were living life to the fullest, you’d be prepared to die at any moment. Like let’s imagine for a second, this was our final destination, I know it’s a scary thought, but bear with me. If we asked ourselves right now “Did I truly live the life I wanted and make the most out of it?” The answer for most of us is “No, not really.”, but here’s the positive. It’s not too late for us, we’re very fortunate to have opportunities that our ancestors couldn’t even dream up. You can start right now and if you’ve already started, you can keep going. Every morning you wake up is a blessing. You might not see that, because you hate your job, I’ve been there, but that doesn’t mean you hate life. Your job is the problem. It’s designed to waste your life, so the people you’re working for live all the memories & stories that you deserve. You want a reason to subscribe? I’ll go hard on this subject very soon, on how to make the system work for you, not the other fucking way around.
Live an extraordinary life. Your days are numbered. You won’t get another chance. This is what you’ve got. You can play and win the game with the hand you’ve been dealt. It’s up to you how well you execute, no matter the circumstances you were born in. You might have to work harder than everybody else in order for it to pay off in the end, but you can’t expect anything, if you waste your time. Eventually, every second you chose to sacrifice for immediate gratification will accumulate and hit you hard. Value your time, invest it intelligently, know who to have time for and how much, appreciate every moment and you will see positive results. If you fuck up today, start again tomorrow. Greene attended U.C. Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received a degree in classical studies. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
