THE SAYINGS OF CONFUCIUS - FULL AudioBook | Greatest Audio Books - Confucianism is an ethical and philosophical system developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius (孔夫子 Kǒng Fūzǐ, or K'ung-fu-tzu, lit. "Master Kong", 551--479 BC). Confucianism originated as an "ethical-sociopolitical teaching" during the Spring and Autumn Period, but later developed metaphysical and cosmological elements in the Han Dynasty. Following the abandonment of Legalism in China after the Qin Dynasty, Confucianism became the official state ideology of the Han. The disintegration of the Han in the second century C.E. opened the way for the spiritual and otherworldly doctrines of Buddhism and Daoism to dominate intellectual life and to become the ruling doctrines during the Tang dynasty. In the late Tang, Confucianism absorbed many of these challenging aspects and was reformulated Neo-Confucianism. This reinvigorated form was adopted as the basis of the imperial exams and the core philosophy of the scholar official class in the Song dynasty. Neo-Confucianism turned into sometimes rigid orthodoxy over the following centuries. In popular practice, however, the three doctrines of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism were often melded together. The abolition of the examination system in 1905 marked the end of official Confucianism. The New Culture intellectuals of the early twentieth century blamed Confucianism for China's weaknesses. They searched for imported doctrines to replace it, such as the "Three Principles of the People" with the establishment of the Republic of China, and then Communism under the People's Republic of China. In the late twentieth century, Confucianism was credited with the rise of the East Asian economy and revived both in the People's Republic and abroad.
The core of Confucianism is humanism, or what the philosopher Herbert Fingarette calls "the secular as sacred." The focus of spiritual concern is this world and the family, not the gods and not the afterlife. Confucianism broadly speaking does not exalt faithfulness to divine will or higher law. This stance rests on the belief that human beings are teachable, improvable and perfectible through personal and communal endeavor especially self-cultivation and self-creation. Confucian thought focuses on the cultivation of virtue and maintenance of ethics, the most basic of which are ren, yi, and li. Ren is an obligation of altruism and humaneness for other individuals within a community, yi is the upholding of righteousness and the moral disposition to do good, and li is a system of norms and propriety that determines how a person should properly act within a community. Confucianism holds that one should give up one's life, if necessary, either passively or actively, for the sake of upholding the cardinal moral values of ren and yi.
Cultures and countries strongly influenced by Confucianism include mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Vietnam, as well as various territories settled predominantly by Chinese people, such as Singapore. Although Confucian ideas prevail in these areas, few people identify themselves as Confucian, and instead see Confucian ethics as a complementary guideline for other ideologies and beliefs, including democracy, Marxism, capitalism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. Confucius (551–479 BC)[1] was a Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history.
The philosophy of Confucius emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. His followers competed successfully with many other schools during the Hundred Schools of Thought era only to be suppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin Dynasty. Following the victory of Han over Chu after the collapse of Qin, Confucius's thoughts received official sanction and were further developed into a system known as Confucianism.
Confucius is traditionally credited with having authored or edited many of the Chinese classic texts including all of the Five Classics, but modern scholars are cautious of attributing specific assertions to Confucius himself. Aphorisms concerning his teachings were compiled in the Analects, but only many years after his death.
Confucius's principles had a basis in common Chinese tradition and belief. He championed strong family loyalty, ancestor worship, respect of elders by their children and of husbands by their wives. He also recommended family as a basis for ideal government. He espoused the well-known principle "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself", an early version of the Golden Rule.

Confucius is probably the best known Chinese philosopher of all times. Although he developed his theories about 2500 years ago, his ancient ideas of morality can still be applied today. He taught his philosophies of confucianism at his "School of Ru". Little is known about his life and biography but his maxims have survived and to this days are practised in the religion of Confucianism. His so-called five constants, made up of humanity, tradition, rectitude, scrupulousness and knowledge should help humanity become content and make the best out of their worldliness. Confucianism originated as an "ethical-sociopolitical teaching" during the Spring and Autumn Period, but later developed metaphysical and cosmological elements in the Han Dynasty. Following the abandonment of Legalism in China after the Qin Dynasty, Confucianism became the official state ideology of the Han. The disintegration of the Han in the second century C.E. opened the way for the spiritual and otherworldly doctrines of Buddhism and Daoism to dominate intellectual life and to become the ruling doctrines during the Tang dynasty. In the late Tang, Confucianism absorbed many of these challenging aspects and was reformulated Neo-Confucianism. This reinvigorated form was adopted as the basis of the imperial exams and the core philosophy of the scholar official class in the Song dynasty. Neo-Confucianism turned into sometimes rigid orthodoxy over the following centuries. In popular practice, however, the three doctrines of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism were often melded together. The abolition of the examination system in 1905 marked the end of official Confucianism. The New Culture intellectuals of the early twentieth century blamed Confucianism for China's weaknesses. They searched for imported doctrines to replace it, such as the "Three Principles of the People" with the establishment of the Republic of China, and then Communism under the People's Republic of China. In the late twentieth century, Confucianism was credited with the rise of the East Asian economy and revived both in the People's Republic and abroad.
The core of Confucianism is humanism, or what the philosopher Herbert Fingarette calls "the secular as sacred." The focus of spiritual concern is this world and the family, not the gods and not the afterlife. Confucianism broadly speaking does not exalt faithfulness to divine will or higher law. This stance rests on the belief that human beings are teachable, improvable and perfectible through personal and communal endeavor especially self-cultivation and self-creation. Confucian thought focuses on the cultivation of virtue and maintenance of ethics, the most basic of which are ren, yi, and li. Ren is an obligation of altruism and humaneness for other individuals within a community, yi is the upholding of righteousness and the moral disposition to do good, and li is a system of norms and propriety that determines how a person should properly act within a community. Confucianism holds that one should give up one's life, if necessary, either passively or actively, for the sake of upholding the cardinal moral values of ren and yi.
Cultures and countries strongly influenced by Confucianism include mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Vietnam, as well as various territories settled predominantly by Chinese people, such as Singapore. Although Confucian ideas prevail in these areas, few people identify themselves as Confucian, and instead see Confucian ethics as a complementary guideline for other ideologies and beliefs, including democracy, Marxism, capitalism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. The philosophy of Confucius emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. His followers competed successfully with many other schools during the Hundred Schools of Thought era only to be suppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin Dynasty. Following the victory of Han over Chu after the collapse of Qin, Confucius's thoughts received official sanction and were further developed into a system known as Confucianism.
Confucius is traditionally credited with having authored or edited many of the Chinese classic texts including all of the Five Classics, but modern scholars are cautious of attributing specific assertions to Confucius himself. Aphorisms concerning his teachings were compiled in the Analects, but only many years after his death.
Confucius's principles had a basis in common Chinese tradition and belief. He championed strong family loyalty, ancestor worship, respect of elders by their children and of husbands by their wives. He also recommended family as a basis for ideal government. He espoused the well-known principle "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself", an early version of the Golden Rule.

Today, we are going to be starting off this first episode talking about Confucius. And if you are talking about notable figures in Chinese history, Confucius is a great place to start—because he really is the philosopher who defined Chinese society for the past two thousand years.
Confucius is thought to have lived from 551 to 479 BC, during the so-called 'Spring and Autumn Period,' when China's Zhou Dynasty was slowly splitting up. This era later turned into the 'Warring States Period,' before China was unified again in around 200 BC.
Confucius was born in the state of Lu. This is the modern day Shandong province. Now, at the time when Confucius was born, China was kind of like Medieval Europe. Different states were competing with each other for power.
Confucius saw morality deteriorating and the aristocracy turning their back on the traditions of the Zhou Dynasty that Confucius viewed as a kind of Golden Age. Confucius felt he had a mission to return China to its former glory, to return to the 'Way' or Dao.
Today, the Dao refers to China's traditional culture of self-cultivation and emphasis on the way of virtue. Confucius felt people in his age had lost true respect for the established rituals and norms of society. They merely carried out the formalities—without really understanding the true essence. To use the words of the time, "The world lacked the Dao." Thus Confucius started his mission of educating the populace.
Confucius taught his disciples to become Gentlemen...instructing them in the six arts: Rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, and mathematics.
Confucius stressed several philosophical concepts that would serve to maintain China's social structure for the next two millennia. These include: Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faithfulness. As well as loyalty and filial piety, the respectful relationship between subordinates and their superiors, such as sons and their fathers, or subjects and their rulers.
Confucius was never employed in any significant government post during his lifetime. But during the Han Dynasty, almost 300 years after his death, Confucianism was adopted as China's state philosophy.
Confucianism became known as one of China's three belief systems—along with Buddhism and Daoism.
But, Confucianism is very much a philosophy for those living in society—whereas Buddhism and Daoism stress withdrawing from the world to seek spiritual enlightenment.
The Confucian belief that rulers needed to be virtuous led to the establishment of the imperial examination system. These examinations started in the Sui Dynasty, which ran from 589 to 618 AD.
The examinations saw officials selected based on their academic achievements rather than through a hereditary system, as was common in other parts of the world at the time. Thus scholars noted that for many centuries, China had the most advanced political system in the world.
Gradually, these examinations became more structured through history. They saw prospective officials tested on their understanding and ability to memorize Confucian texts. Their answers during the exams had to demonstrate the well-cultivated thinking of a Confucian gentleman.
The exam system ended a few years before the fall of imperial China in 1911. And after the Communist takeover in 1949, Confucianism was ruthlessly attacked—especially during the Cultural Revolution and campaign to smash the four Olds: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas.
Since Confucianism had been at the very core of Chinese society for two thousand years, the Communist regime's attack against Confucianism can be seen as an attack on the very essence of Chinese culture.
But Confucianism has survived, particularly due to the preservation of the customs in Taiwan and other countries.
Today, when speaking of traditional Chinese culture, Confucius can be seen as one of the most influential figures from ancient times till the present day. His teachings are at the very heart of China's traditional culture of self-cultivation and emphasis on virtue.

Is Confucianism a religion? If so, why do most Chinese think it isn't? From ancient Confucian temples, to nineteenth-century archives, to the testimony of people interviewed by the author throughout China over a period of more than a decade, this book traces the birth and growth of the idea of Confucianism as a world religion.
The book begins at Oxford, in the late nineteenth century, when Friedrich Max Müller and James Legge classified Confucianism as a world religion in the new discourse of "world religions" and the emerging discipline of comparative religion. Anna Sun shows how that decisive moment continues to influence the understanding of Confucianism in the contemporary world, not only in the West but also in China, where the politics of Confucianism have become important to the present regime in a time of transition. Contested histories of Confucianism are vital signs of social and political change.
Sun also examines the revival of Confucianism in China today and the social significance of the ritual practice of Confucian temples. The North American Guqin Association (NAGA) presented a multi-disciplinary stage performance Music of Confucius - Chinese Cultural Heritage Guqin Concert on June 21, 2009 at the Milpitas Community Center. This exciting production featured various programs integrating guqin music with poetry recitation, dance, martial arts, Chinese Choengsam show and natural object music. The concert was NAGAs largest production of the year, which involved over 50 performers and production staffs. It featured many famous artists and combined resources of several organizations and performance groups. The 300-seat venue was filled to its capacity. The audience also had a rare chance to listen to qin music played on an antique qin from the late Song Dynasty (approximately 900 years ago).
The featured guqin artist was Wang Fei, the founder and director of NAGA. She was joined by famous artists Diana Weiping Ding, Xiaopei He Gelb and Cheryl Leonard.

Sept. 28 of this year marks the 10th anniversary of the
Confucius Institutes established in the
world by the Chinese authorities.
However, a few days ago, the University of Chicago
announced it would sever its ties
with the Institute supported by Beijing.
As the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) overseas
"cultural outpost",
the Confucius Institute seems to be less successful at having
overseas universities open armed and welcoming,
as they have been in the past.
As one of the representatives of traditional Chinese culture,
Confucius moral teachings have been well rooted
within China’s true heritage for over two thousand years.
Since 1949, the CCP have always slandered and criticised
Confucius and Confucianism.
However, things changed dramatically 10 years ago,
as CCP changed its attitude towards Confucius.
Since then, the CCP has established 465 Confucius Institutes
and 713 Confucius classrooms in 123 countries worldwide.
The Chinese authorities have made detailed preparations
for the 10th anniversary celebrations
of overseas Confucius Institutes,
even setting a date Sept. 27 as "Confucius Institute Day".
However, on Sept. 25, University of Chicago broadcast
a statement on its website,
which can best be described as antipathetic with the "festive"
atmosphere which the CCP has tried to create for the
Confucius Institute.
The statement says, the University of Chicago and CCP
official institution - Hanban,
have been trying to negotiate terms these past few months
on finding a new agreement.
A recent report however, quoted the speech given
by Director-General of Hanban, did not meet
the desired requirements of a continued equality partnership.
Hence the University decided to terminate their negotiations
upon expiry of the contract.
So which news report did the article come from?
Shanghai CCP’s "Liberation Daily" published an article
on Sept. 19, which details
an exclusive interview with Xu Lin, Director of Hanban
and the Director-General of the Confucius Institute.
At the end of the article it said, "This year, in late April,
a hundred emeritus professors of University of Chicago
signed up for the closure of Confucius Institute at the University.
Xu Lin decided to directly write a letter to the President
of University of Chicago, and give a phone call
to the representative of University in Beijing.
All of these were just to convey one simple message
'If your University decided to quit the College, I agree'."
The report says that the University of Chicago
decided to continue to run Confucius College.
Xu Lin’s statement "one phone call can change the decision
of the University of Chicago", its significant discrepancy
with the express declaration of the University.
This is also consistent with one key reason
that more than 100 professors jointly appealed
to stop the operation of the Confucius Institute
in April of this year.
These professors expressed concern
of the "academic freedom"
and the intervention of the CCP.
Some faculty staff said that the teaching materials
of the Confucius Institute are required not
to involve Taiwan, Tibet and Falun Gong.
American Chinese magazine "China Affairs" Chief Editor
Mr Wu Fan:
"American professors do not welcome it
because the Institute is completely contrary to
the principles of American Professors
governing the University and promoting academic freedom.
Such an incident happened not once, but has also occurred
in Canada, Los Angeles and Chicago.
They all raised this issue to Hanban, but Hanban are
unwilling to change,
wanting to still keep things the same way,
they then have to let the Confucius Institute go."
Since the Confucius Institute offered American universities
lots of money as an incentive, many voices are
worried that these gifts have strings attached.
Chinese historian Li Yuanhua: "In the West, Sinology
( network attached storage co.)belongs to an edge of discipline,
is facing a real financial problems.
The CCP saw this, and employed economic temptation
as a means to develop Confucius Institutes
with some Western Sinology research institutions.
All in the name of cooperation and assistance,
the CCP tried to achieve containment, thus controlling
the direction of overseas Chinese studies, and in fact the CCP’s
purpose is very vicious."
In addition, according to Hong Kong’s "Ming Pao",
a few months ago, a person who is familiar
with the operation of the Confucius Institute
has revealed that due to being funded by the government,
some overseas Confucius Institutes even
become official reception centres.
Wu Fan: "Some people suspect that the Institute is
an intelligence agency, which sent out staff from China,

Last year the Chinese regime started the "Confucius Peace Prize" apparently to counter the Nobel Peace Prize, after the Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel. Now the regime's Ministry of Culture has cancelled the prize. Here's more.
The Chinese regime's Ministry of Culture has cast in doubt the future of the Confucius Peace Prize. Executive Chairman of the prize Liu Haofeng's has often stated that the Ministry has always backed the prize. The Ministry however, said the Confucius Peace Prize, now in its second year, never received state approval.
In an interview with the Associated Foreign Press, Liu made it clear the award would still continue and that , "It is just the removal of the previous organizer."
The Ministry of Culture then reiterated that the prize was, indeed, canceled.
The Confucius Peace Prize was established last year as alternative to the Nobel Peace Prize, which had been awarded to well known Chinese democracy activist Liu Xiaobo. He's still serving his 11-year jail sentence for so-called "inciting subversion of state power."
The recipient of last year's prize was Taiwanese vice president Lien Chan—who had never heard of the award, and so failed to show up for the ceremony.
Up for the running of this year's prize were Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, selected by the Chinese regime to act as the 'Panchen Lama,' and South African president Jacob Zuma, among others.

The Chinese regime's Ministry of Culture has cast in doubt the future of the Confucius Peace Prize. Executive Chairman of the prize Liu Haofeng's has often stated that the Ministry has always backed the prize. The Ministry however, said the Confucius Peace Prize, now in its second year, never received state approval.
In an interview with the Associated Foreign Press, Liu made it clear the award would still continue and that , "It is just the removal of the previous organizer."
The Ministry of Culture then reiterated that the prize was, indeed, canceled.
The Confucius Peace Prize was established last year as alternative to the Nobel Peace Prize, which had been awarded to well known Chinese democracy activist Liu Xiaobo. He's still serving his 11-year jail sentence for so-called "inciting subversion of state power."
The recipient of last year's prize was Taiwanese vice president Lien Chan—who had never heard of the award, and so failed to show up for the ceremony.
Up for the running of this year's prize were Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, selected by the Chinese regime to act as the 'Panchen Lama,' and South African president Jacob Zuma, among others.
