Effort to woo Olympia to widen SR 522 may face challenge

MONROE — A recent push is on to ask state legislators to fund the final expansion of state Route 522, a commuter highway seen as the “critical link” between U.S. 2 and King County.
Some state legislators,though, say the ball is really in the county’s court, which County Executive Dave Somers rebuked last week.
Legislators point to a failed 2007 ballot measure to create a roadway tax that was meant to help pay for the project.

Konicke seen fit for trial, which may start at end of March

SNOHOMISH — Zach Konicke, 29, who is charged with the murder of his mother and the arson of his parents’ Snohomish home in a Jan. 14 incident, was found mentally competent by the state late last week and will stand trial sometime in late March.
Konicke was charged with murder and arson in Snohomish County Superior Court Feb. 4. The mental evaluation review took place Feb. 12.

Lake Tye wakeboard park set to
begin construction in March

MONROE — The wakeboard cable park at Lake Tye is scheduled to break ground March 3.
This first phase of the project should be complete by this summer.
In related news, the wakeboard park’s developers paid up approximately $22,500 in past-due rent to the city, Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas announced this month.
The developers pay the city at least $1,000 a month because they are renting land at Lake Tye, which is public land, for the cable park.
H3O Development of Sammamish are calling the facility the Propullsion Cablepark Monroe.
The park has been delayed for various reasons over the past six years.

EVERETT — A rebooted effort to limit the number of marijuana shops within Everett’s city limits may soon be chewed over by city’s planning commission, but not all City Council members believe this is the right use of the commission’s time.

Everett Film Festival Feb. 19-20 brings little-seen worldly flicks here

EVERETT — The 19th annual Everett Film Festival kicks off Friday, Feb. 19, at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave.
The two-day event provides food and fun for film lovers and casual moviegoers alike, screening a variety of local and global indie films rarely offered to the public in a theater setting. This year’s festival features eight very different films, which promise to challenge and entertain audience members.

Man who hired expert says city's cell phone tower zoning rules are faulty

Why is Howarth Park beach access still delayed?

EVERETT — There’s good news and bad news about getting to the beach at Howarth Park this spring. 
The good news is that the pedestrian bridge that provides park users access to the beach off of E. Mukilteo Boulevard is scheduled to re-open in May, approximately one year after its emergency closure for repairs.

Everett Parks & Rec plans for the next 20 years

Homeless housing effort seen as a countywide challenge

EVERETT — Countywide leaders appear to have open minds toward finding a solution on housing the chronically homeless.
On Feb. 1, a private roundtable meeting convened in Everett on how to grow the regional stock of low-barrier, low-income housing under what’s called the Housing First model, which puts drug- and alcohol-addicted individuals under a roof first to rehabilitate later.

Forest Park pool to close for 1½ months this spring

Members of Baile Folklore Colibri perform during Latino Family Night at Cascade High School on Wednesday, Feb. 2. With nearly 18 percent of Cascade’s student body being of Latino descent, the annual event has become popular with its featured music, dancing and food while uniting the Latino Community in a night of education and celebration.
