Kenya is set to begin the defence of its claims to an oil and gas rich maritime territory in a long running dispute with Somalia. The attorney general is leading a Kenyan delegation to respond to a suite by Somalia which is also claiming the same area of the indian ocean. NTV’s Brenda Wanga reports on the genesis and implications of the case.

Argentine Vice Chancellor Carlos Foradori welcomed a decision by the United Nations to expand the country's maritime territory at a Buenos Aires press conference on Tuesday. The decision by a UN commission increases the country's maritime territory in the South Atlantic Ocean by 35%, incorporating the disputed Malvinas or Falkland Islands.
"I want to underline that this has been the result of a high profile foreign policy," he said.

A United Nations commission has endorsed Argentina's maritime territory expansion in the southern Atlantic Ocean. This includes the Falkland Islands, a disputed British overseas territory. However, a UN spokesman said the commission did not qualify the parts that were subject to dispute. Both London and the government of the Falkland Islands downplayed Argentina's claim and said the recommendation was not legally binding.

AUSTERITY CUTS WERE A WASTE OF TIME - Nothing can make up for the loss of frozen methane gas reserves, oil reserves, and fishing, over the next century and more. Argentina got the United Nations to ratify a 35% expansion of their maritime territory. A huge chunk of the Atlantic just got stolen from under David Cameron's and George Osborne's noses.
Cretins.
While the Tory Prime Minister expended unwarranted and disproportionate effort and time in Europe, sweet-talking EU leaders over a nothing deal, the Argentinians have played a masterful hand, and stolen the Atlantic surrounding the Falkland Islands or as they call them the Malvenas.
Margaret Thatcher, the venerated former Tory Prime Minister, sent men to die for that lump of rock and it's surrounding mineral wealth. She sank a battleship over it. Hawker Harrier jump jets were sent out by the boatload literally on sortie after sortie - 'We counted them all out...and we counted them all back' was the famous give-nothing-away description by the late great Brian Hanrahan.
What a shabby state to get us into.
The austerity cuts are more than negated - they are swamped hundreds of times over by the loss of the definite right of the UK to take, defend, hold and fight off Argentina over the oil and gas reserves and anything else.
It is a dreadful wrong assessment of priorities by this Conservative government. A few billion here and there - even a hundred billion of savings - is as nothing to the loss of sovereignty of the Atlantic around the Malvenas or Falkland islands.
It is the old dentist joke - the teeth were fine but I am afraid your gums had to come out. The Falklands we still have democratic rights to as voted by the islanders, but the entire sea around it and the continental shelf below - we have now lost.
This is the biggest cocked-up legacy the Tories should be remembered for. The UK government is trying to minimise it, but this is 'game over' pretty much. We are on the wrong side of the law if we try to protect assets out there.
Make no mistake, the Argentinians WILL provoke, they absolutely were gagging to get this United Nations recognition, and have opportunist fashion, slipped away with it, as the UK Conservative government had it's head stuck in the lightweight sand of a rubbish deal from european partners, about some crappy conditions being imposed on european citizens getting our modest child benefits.
Really?! Is that what we expended our effort on while a massive chunk of frozen methane and oil out in the Atlantic was stolen from under our noses? This is unforgivable.
The Chancellor and the Prime Minister are a laughing stock for this - squabbling over an EU vote only the tories gave a damn for, and enthusing over a nothing deal about child benefits. All the while, these few billions - small change in government terms - are as nothing compared to the TRILLIONS the UK now cannot protect itself from losing over the next generations and century and more.
And don't think the Tory decision to NOT proceed with multiple aircraft carriers and so on, did not figure in the Argentines' strategy - this is a failure of security and of military strategy as well.
An absolute embarrassment, is what this Tory government has turned into.

A territorial dispute pitting Kenya against its northern neighbour Somalia continued at the Hague with the Horn of Africa country accusing Kenya obstructing efforts to resolve a long running dispute over the maritime boundary.
Somalia has slammed claims by Kenyan Attorney General Prof. Githu Muigai accusing her of jumping the gun when it filed the case at the International Court of Justice, saying it turned to the Hague based court as a last resort after negotiations failed.
Somalia claims the 2009 agreement did not bar it from exploring alternative ways of resolving the deadlock.

Maritime territory
Maritime territory is a term used in international law to denote coastal waters which are not Territorial Waters though in immediate contact with the sea. In the case of Territorial Waters, the dominion of the adjacent state is subject to a limitation. Dominion over maritime territory is not subject to any limitation. Thus any strait through which the right of passage of foreign vessels can be forbidden, or bays so land-locked that they cannot be held to form part of any ocean-highway, are maritime territory.

Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands (/ˈfɔːlklənd/; Spanish: Islas Malvinas [malˈβinas]) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 300 miles (480 km) east of South America's southern Patagonian coast, at a latitude of about 52°S. The archipelago, with an area of 4,700 square miles (12,000 km2), comprises East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 smaller islands. As a British overseas territory, the Falklands have internal self-governance, and the United Kingdom takes responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs. The islands' capital is Stanley on East Falkland.
Controversy exists over the Falklands' discovery and subsequent colonisation by Europeans. At various times, the islands have had French, British, Spanish, and Argentine settlements. Britain reasserted its rule in 1833, although Argentina maintains its claim to the islands. In April 1982, Argentine forces temporarily occupied the islands. British administration was restored two months later at the end of the Falklands War.

United Nations
The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A United Nations commission has endorsed Argentina's maritime territory expansion in the southern Atlantic Ocean. This includes the Falkland Islands, a disputed British overseas territory. However, a UN spokesman said the commission did not qualify the parts that were subject to dispute. Somalia faults Kenyan Govt. for prolonging dispute over maritime bow
A territorial dispute pitting Kenya against its northern neighbour Somalia continued at the Hague with the Horn of Africa country accusing Kenya obstructing efforts to resolve a long running dispute over the maritime boundary. Somalia has slammed claims by Kenyan Attorney General Prof. Githu Muigai accusing her of jumping the gun when it filed the case at the International Court of Justice, saying it turned to the Hague based court as a last resort after negotiations failed. Somalia claims the 2009 agreement did not bar it from exploring alternative ways of resolving the deadlock.

Hawker Harrier jump jets were sent out by the boatload literally on sortie after sortie - 'We counted them all out...and we counted them all back' was the famous give-nothing-away description by the late great Brian Hanrahan.
What a shabby state to get us into.
The austerity cuts are more than negated - they are swamped hundreds of times over by the loss of the definite right of the UK to take, defend, hold and fight off Argentina over the oil and gas reserves and anything else.
It is a dreadful wrong assessment of priorities by this Conservative government. A few billion here and there - even a hundred billion of savings - is as nothing to the loss of sovereignty of the Atlantic around the Malvenas or Falkland islands.
It is the old dentist joke - the teeth were fine but I am afraid your gums had to come out. The Falklands we still have democratic rights to as voted by the islanders, but the entire sea around it and the continental shelf below - we have now lost.
This is the biggest cocked-up legacy the Tories should be remembered for. The UK government is trying to minimise it, but this is 'game over' pretty much. We are on the wrong side of the law if we try to protect assets out there.
Make no mistake, the Argentinians WILL provoke, they absolutely were gagging to get this United Nations recognition, and have opportunist fashion, slipped away with it, as the UK Conservative government had it's head stuck in the lightweight sand of a rubbish deal from european partners, about some crappy conditions being imposed on european citizens getting our modest child benefits.
Really?! Is that what we expended our effort on while a massive chunk of frozen methane and oil out in the Atlantic was stolen from under our noses? This is unforgivable.
The Chancellor and the Prime Minister are a laughing stock for this - squabbling over an EU vote only the tories gave a damn for, and enthusing over a nothing deal about child benefits. All the while, these few billions - small change in government terms - are as nothing compared to the TRILLIONS the UK now cannot protect itself from losing over the next generations and century and more.
And don't think the Tory decision to NOT proceed with multiple aircraft carriers and so on, did not figure in the Argentines' strategy - this is a failure of security and of military strategy as well.
An absolute embarrassment, is what this Tory government has turned into.

It is a dreadful wrong assessment of priorities by this Conservative government. A few billion here and there - even a hundred billion of savings - is as nothing to the loss of sovereignty of the Atlantic around the Malvenas or Falkland islands.
It is the old dentist joke - the teeth were fine but I am afraid your gums had to come out. The Falklands we still have democratic rights to as voted by the islanders, but the entire sea around it and the continental shelf below - we have now lost.
This is the biggest cocked-up legacy the Tories should be remembered for. The UK government is trying to minimise it, but this is 'game over' pretty much. We are on the wrong side of the law if we try to protect assets out there.
Make no mistake, the Argentinians WILL provoke, they absolutely were gagging to get this United Nations recognition, and have opportunist fashion, slipped away with it, as the UK Conservative government had it's head stuck in the lightweight sand of a rubbish deal from european partners, about some crappy conditions being imposed on european citizens getting our modest child benefits.
Really?! Is that what we expended our effort on while a massive chunk of frozen methane and oil out in the Atlantic was stolen from under our noses? This is unforgivable.
The Chancellor and the Prime Minister are a laughing stock for this - squabbling over an EU vote only the tories gave a damn for, and enthusing over a nothing deal about child benefits. All the while, these few billions - small change in government terms - are as nothing compared to the TRILLIONS the UK now cannot protect itself from losing over the next generations and century and more.
And don't think the Tory decision to NOT proceed with multiple aircraft carriers and so on, did not figure in the Argentines' strategy - this is a failure of security and of military strategy as well.
An absolute embarrassment, is what this Tory government has turned into.

The Philippines has recently unveiled an exhibit in Manila of 60 ancient maps of Asia that authorities say debunk China’s claimed "historical ownership" over disputed areas of the South China Sea, specifically the Scarborough Shoal, located west of the Philippines.
According to Filipino newspaper The Inquirer, Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio said in a public lecture that he hopes the maps, the oldest dating from 1136 during China’s Southern Song Dynasty, would finally settle the dispute in the South China Sea in the Philippines' favor. The cartographic display is also viewable online at the Institute of Maritime and Ocean Affairs website.
“We should respect historical facts, not historical lies,” Carpio said. The collection of maps shows the island of Hainan, China’s southernmost region, as not including any maritime territories, particularly the hotly disputed Scarborough Shoal and Spratly Islands.
China’s claim over the territory, which it calls Huangyan Island, re-emerged in April 2012, after the Philippines discovered Chinese fishermen engaging in what Manila said was poaching at the shoal. The discovery eventually led to a tense confrontation between Chinese and Filipino maritime forces and continues to be a geopolitical point of contention for the two countries. The Philippines is an ally of the U.S.
China’s maritime claims extend beyond just the Scarborough Shoal, and even beyond the South China Sea. China is also embroiled in disputes with Japan in the East China Sea over a cluster of islands called the Diaoyu in Chinese or Senkaku in Japanese. In the South China Sea, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan all lay claim to different areas that China has also claimed as its own.
China has been known to use maps in the past as a form of cultural warfare. Earlier this summer, the Chinese government released a new official “vertical” map which not only included the mainland, but also much of the South China Sea.
