Meeting of the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan March 20, 2015 It’s time to think about the prospects of creating a currency union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, President Vladimir Putin has said. “We think the time has come to talk about the possibility to form a currency union in the future,” Putin said Friday at a meeting with his Kazakh and Belarusian counterparts Nursultan Nazarbaev and Aleksandr Lukashenko in Astana. It’s easier to protect the common financial market when working shoulder to shoulder, Putin added. At the Friday meeting in Astana the heads of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan – all member states of the Eurasian Economic Union - are discussing a joint game plan to tackle the global economic slowdown and challenges in the energy market that has seen Brent benchmark plunging to about $54 per barrel as of March 20 from its peak of $115 per barrel last June. The EEU countries can gradually integrate in the currency union, Aleksey Likhachev, Russian deputy minister of economic development, commented. “I would suggest moving step by step, exactly as all EU member states enter the eurozone, gradually creating all these common financial institutions,” Likhachev said, adding that if such an order comes from the member leaders, all the sides will immediately start negotiations. Despite a wide range of benefits, trade within the EEU may be followed by certain risks, Likhachev believes. One of the main risks is that the absence of borders and the common market for service make trade extremely dependent on fluctuations in currency exchange rates, he said. "That means any slightest fluctuation in national currencies of today’s four and of tomorrow’s five [Kyrgyzstan is about to join the EEU – Ed.] EEU countries, that are related neither to trade nor to demand, create a huge trade imbalance,” he said, adding that officials are looking for ways to smooth these problems out, and trade and industry institutions are in a constant dialogue. "In the same enclosed space, where goods, services, capital and labor are constantly moving, the existence of different currencies exacerbates the risks," Likhachev said. For Belarusians it's as if Glasnost and independence never happened. In a rare protest, old men and head-scarfed mothers are bundled into the back of police vans. One man is not even fit enough to step-up into the van, yet the truncheon battering at his back is unceasing. This is a president who rules with the police and the KGB by his side. The former Deputy foreign minister now fears Lukashenko has become mentally unbalanced. This is after all a man who expresses ardent admiration for Hitler. And, after preaching the rhetoric of Belarusian nationalism, stunned everyone with moves to re-unite with Russia. For film director Yuri, Lukashenko is a perfect vehicle for comedy. His satirical profile of the president was instantly banned but shown to wide acclaim in Western Europe. Predictably for Belarus, it took only two days for some government thugs to wipe the smile off Yuri's face. Many believe Lukashenko's moves to Russian re-unification are simply a veiled attempt to open the doors to the Russian presidency. We wait to see how far this Belarusian strongman's career can go. China sent a Belarusian telecom satellite into intended orbit from southwest China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 00:57 Beijing time on Saturday. The satellite successfully separated from the rocket at 01:23, and the solar panel opened 38 minutes later. "This launch is highly accurate in orbit injection, about several kilometers, comparable to a target shooting right in the middle. The Belarusian experts and technicians on site are very satisfied," said Wang Zemin, chief engineer of Xichang Satellite Launch Center. "The Belarusian side is amazed at the Chinese experts' high-level expertise, and we trust China very much. We have a very broad cooperation perspective, and we believe we will have very good cooperation. Now our priority is to make this satellite put into use as soon as possible," said Gurulev Sergey Petrovich, chairman of the State Military-Industrial Committee of Belarus. The satellite, carried by a Long March-3B rocket, is Belarus' first communication satellite. This was also the first time that China launched a satellite for a European country. The Belintersat-1 was built by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. with a designed life of 15 years. It will be put into a geostationary orbit 51.5 degrees east longitude to provide a wide range of telecommunication services, including satellite TV, radio broadcasting and broadband Internet access. This was China's first orbital mission of 2016 and the 223rd launch of the Long March carrier rocket. The presidents of Ukraine and Russia have met just once in the past few months, amid the military conflict in eastern Ukraine. With both leaders in Belarus to participate in a summit, the world is wondering whether they′ll sit down for face-to-face talks, and whether it would even make a difference if they do. Kim Min-ji has the details. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are set to sit down at the same table for talks this Tuesday. The leaders will meet in Minsk, Belarus alongside representatives from the European Union during a summit of the Russia-led customs union. It uncertain whether the two leaders will hold bilateral talks. The two met briefly in June. Since then, Ukrainian forces have gained the upper hand against pro-Russian rebels fighting for control over an area in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine said Monday its security services had captured 10 Russian servicemen in the area and also clashed with 10 tanks and two armored personnel carriers from Russia. Ukraine has accused Moscow of sending its troops into the country a claim the Kremlin denies. Over 2-thousand people have died in fighting since Russia annexed Crimea in March. In a separate development, Poroshenko dissolved parliament on Monday and announced elections for October 26th . The president said that many of the current MPs were supporters of ousted President Viktor Yanukovich,... and added that the majority of Ukrainians want a new parliament. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

This is the exclusive story Lukashenko didn't want you to see. After shooting this report about Studio Total's infamous teddy bear drop, reporter Amos Roberts was detained by the KGB and his laptop, camera and hard drives were confiscated. Luckily he had already smuggled out his footage. "The situation in Belarus is completely hopeless," explains Swedish ad man Per Cromwell. Despite photos of Studio Total's pro-democracy teddy bear stunt promptly surfacing online, the state initially refused to acknowledge it, describing it as "faked enemy propaganda." This report explores the drastic lengths the state went to to cover up the story. "They were at a loss, so this absurdist theatre began where crowds of adults from the special forces were hunting tiny stuffed bears..", one Belarussian journalist explains. Many argue that President Lukashenko's pride is to blame. "Everybody is laughing except for the President." SBS
