Why Are Some World Records So Hard to Break?
Why are some athletes able to crush world records when other records remain unbroken for years? The answer has to do with the kind of materials used in the competition and the type of athletic event one is competing in. Hank Green explains in this episode of SciShow.
This episode is inspired and brought to you by the upcoming Focus Features film, RACE, which releases nationwide on February 19th.

You can ask me questions on my Tumblr:
http://fimflamfilosophy.tumblr.com/
A while ago, somebody asked my if I might do a video talking about Wikipedia - specifically some of the problems plaguing the site beneath the hood. At the time, I didn't know a lot about Wiki bureaucracy, but after watching their processes and keeping track of the Gamergate talk page for a while, I got quite a sense not just for the site's inner machinery, but also for some serious problems they're facing.
The biggest issue they have is that they're staunchly bureaucratic, but they technically don't have any rules when you get right down to it. As a consequence, they tend to enforce things based on flaky, whimsical interpretations backed up by some logic and reasoning with potent spices of personal bias. For the most part the site functions well enough, but certain pages functionally belong to people who are, in essence, emotionally unstable, albeit capable of citing every "rule" the place has. You can watch as rude, frothing jerks get banned from the site only to have to ban immediately lifted by a friend from a higher place. This, along with a number facts, has led to a decline in the number of editors willing to try to work on Wikipedia. It doesn't seem to be killing the site by any means, but it does suggest Wikipedia is vulnerable to passive-aggression and destructive behavior, and you can never tell if a page has been written and maintained by a crazy person or by crazy people.

Addiction treatment WORKS! The Twelve Step Model has been utilized as a treatment for alcohol abuse and alcoholism since 1935. It is extremely important to know that help IS out there and addiction recovery is possible. If you are battling alcoholism, drug addiction, addiction or any other form of addictive behavior, there are people who know EXACTLY what it is like!

It is important to note there are several ways for one to address his or her alcohol abuse treatment. Substance abuse is a very serious condition and has become an epidemic in today's world. Many people suffering with substance abuse need treatment, such as inpatient stays, rehab, or counseling. The importance and purpose of this video, and all our other videos, is to show that recovery IS possible and to give hope to those who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction issues. Help IS out there! :)
From the book Alcoholics Anonymous: "In spite of the great increase in the size and span of this Fellowship, at its core it remains simple and personal. Each day, somewhere in the world, recovery begins when one alcoholic talks with another alcoholic, sharing experience, strength, and hope."

Title: The Wikipedia Language Gap: Understanding and Designing for Global Communities
Abstract: Every day people produce an extraordinary amount of user-generated content in social media systems such as Wikipedia, Flickr, and Facebook. There is great opportunity for such data to help provide global coverage of a variety of topics. Yet, there is also a risk that language barriers and coverage biases present in the data can limit the information available to certain user communities. In this talk, I will present research that illustrates both the challenges and opportunities of user-generated content in the context of multilingual Wikipedia. First, I will present studies that empirically assess the content diversity and coverage biases that exist across numerous language editions of Wikipedia. Next, I will demonstrate the effects these coverage biases can have on end-user technologies. Finally, I will introduce Omnipedia—a system our lab developed that highlights the opportunities such data present for designing a new class of global technologies.
Bio: Darren Gergle (Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University) is a Professor in Communication Studies and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (by courtesy) at Northwestern University. His research focuses on social computing and human-computer interaction, and applies cognitive and social psychological theories to the design, development and evaluation of novel communication technologies. His research is generously supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Mental Health, Google, Microsoft Research and Facebook.

Thanks to many great contributors, we are proud to present the Graphs... because wiki pages with SVG and PNG images is so last century. Graph extension allows content authors to insert a data-defined graph or a map in a wiki page. Graph is described using Vega visualization grammar ( demo), and allows very complex data transformations, filtering, and soon even animation & interactivity. Combine that with the power of wiki template parameters and Lua scripting, and the results could be stellar. Up to you really. Vega+d3 gives us a huge list of charting options and maps with numerous projections and ability to highlight individual regions. Lastly, graphs could be rendered either in a browser (more interactivity), or on the server (faster load). Demo will be served.
Special thanks goes to milimetric, krinkle, Brion, and gwicke, without whose help this project would have been a lot harder, and to Vega and other open source teams who build such great libraries.

Wikipedia Academy - "When Peer Production Succeeds", Keynote by Benjamin Mako Hill
As Wikipedians have collaborated over the last decade to build the most comprehensive reference work in history, they have created, and documented, a new class of cooperative work. The academic world -- inspired by Wikipedia's success and its novel form -- have responded with thousands of academic papers about Wikipedia and its processes.
But as many people who have tried to create their own wikis can attest to, Wikipedia's enormous success at mobilizing volunteers and building works of high quality has been difficult to replicate. Even the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia's founders have struggled to replicate Wikipedia's success in their other projects.
Through the knowledge and intuitions of Wikipedians, and through the work of the academics studying Wikipedia, we know an enormous amount about *how* Wikipedia works. However, the fact that even our own community has systematically failed to replicate our greatest success points to the fact that we still know very little about *why* Wikipedia works. The situation is similar in regards to free software and other peer production communities. And although each failure can teach us something, we have not given these failures the same attention we've saved for the successes.
In this talk, I will refer to research on free software and free culture communities and suggest that the ideal of peer production is only rarely realized. I will show how free software, and free culture, only very rarely looks like its poster children: the Linux kernels and the Wikipedias. I will present some of my research comparing failed free culture projects to successes to both suggest a methodology, and a potential set of answers, in order to answering the question: Why did peer production projects like Wikipedia work?
I will suggest, and try to show, that by learning from our failures, instead of ignoring or sweeping them under the rug, we can make both free culture advocacy and free culture practice more effective.

Luca de Alfaro [Associate Professor of Computer Engineering, UC Santa Cruz]
Abstract:
The Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia: anyone can contribute to its articles simply by clicking on an "edit'' button. The open nature of the Wikipedia has been key to its success, but has a flip side: if anyone can edit, how can readers know whether to trust its content?
To help answer this question, we have developed a reputation system for Wikipedia authors, and a trust system for Wikipedia text. Authors gain reputation when their contributions are long-lived, and they lose reputation when their contributions are undone in short order. Each word in the Wikipedia is assigned a value of trust that depends on the reputation of its author, as well as on the reputation of the authors that subsequently revised the text where the word appears. To validate our algorithms, we show that reputation and trust have good predictive value: higher-reputation authors are more likely to give lasting contributions, and higher-trust text is less likely to be edited.
The trust can be visualized via an intuitive coloring of the text background. The coloring provides an effective way of spotting attempts to tamper with Wikipedia information. A trust-colored version of the entire English Wikipedia can be browsed at http://trust.cse.ucsc.edu/

What is going on when a corporate management consultant breaks away from the nonsense he is being bombarded with in the media- and does his own research? A conspiracy author is born.
It's not that simple, but Grant Elder explains the series of events that lead him from being a good company guy at an airline company with his head down, to questioning the validity of what he's previously accepted as true, almost immediately after the fateful day of 911.
Only as powerful a subject could inspire a man with no background in behind-the-scenes machinations to research and write a 972 page tome on the matter, entitled, 'WIKI VS NWO'. It doesn't stop at merely a book. Grant has made his expose multi-platform- there are included online links in his book (Amazon Link), which verify his claims and research as you read along.
The best part is that it not only lays out the NWO and their affront on real people, but offers constructive discussion points to help end the nightmare, through awareness.

The next CIPR TV show will be at 5pm on Wednesday 20 June and will discuss the well documented (and sometimes volatile) relationship between the public relations profession and the Wikipedia community.
In January 2012, the CIPR partnered with Wikimedia UK, the local chapter behind Wikipedia in the UK. The goal of the partnership is to create mutual understanding for mutual advantage between the two communities. The first step is guidance for public relations professionals outlining how best to engage with the Wikipedia community.
To hear both sides of the debate, tune into CIPR TV where guests David Gerard, active volunteer for Wikimedia UK, and Philip Sheldrake, Founder of Meanwhile and regular presenter of CIPR TV, will discuss how best practice guidelines for public relations professionals are the first step on a long road to mutual respect between both communities.
Gem Griffiths, Managing Director at The Crowd &I;, will present this month's show. If you would like her to put a question to the guests on your behalf, please submit it via the question box or tweet using the hashtag #CIPRtv.
CIPR TV is brought to you by markettiers4dc and the CIPR Social Media Panel.

Chair: Richard McCoy, Conservator of Objects & Variable Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art
1. Extracting Data from Historical Documents: Crowdsourcing Annotations on Wikisource
Many historical documents contain records of interest to historians, scientists and the general public, from census records in government publications to tables in scientific journals, even in personal diaries -- in some cases, records not available from any other sources. Extracting these records can be a time-consuming and expensive process, requiring painstaking attention to detail; however, crowdsourcing this task to citizen scientists has the potential to simultaneously involve a larger pool of interested transcribers, thus parallelizing the work.
In this presentation, we outline a workflow to crowdsource the annotations for 352 pages of previously transcribed biology field notebook text. Within sixteen weeks, citizen scientists had identified 2,342 species, locations and dates marked up in a computer-readable format. We used freely available technology, in particular Wikisource and Wordpress, to recruit volunteers, coordinate efforts and to extract the records from the transcribed text while maintaining a link between annotation and content.
Presenters:
Gaurav Vaidya, Graduate student, University of Colorado at Boulder
David Bloom, VertNet Coordinator, University of California, Berkeley
2. GLAM Women: How You Can Help Close the Gender Gap on Wikipedia
As of 2011, only 9% of editors to Wikipedia are women. How can GLAMs, which are generally women dominated organizations, contribute to the closing of the Wikipedia gendergap by participating and encouraging women's participating in Wikipedia? This presentation by Wikimedia Foundation Community Fellow & former Smithosnian Institution Archives Wikipedian in Residence, reflected on what women in GLAMs can do, utilizing examples of participation options ranging from offline and online events to editing Wikipedia.
Presenter: Sarah Stierch, Wikimedia Foundation Community Fellow, Wikimedia Foundation
3. So Now What? Next Steps in GLAM-Wikimedia collaborations
By now you no longer need convincing. Wikipedia is not only a ubiquitous reference platform for our users, but is also home to a thriving, global volunteer community that is eager to distribute the deeper expertise residing in museums. So now what? As a group of Wikipedians who help museums share content, GLAM-Wiki has made great strides in formalizing over the past few years. But how do museum technologists better connect and interface with this resource? How can we work together to more efficiently share our media, research, and expertise?
This presentation shared the current progress of the GLAM-Wiki infrastructure and offered insights into how museums can best connect with the Wikipedia community in order to share cultural resources on the globally accessible platform. The future of GLAM-Wiki was also considered, including a proposed model that will allow museums to support one another in Wikipedia-focused endeavors.

Jimmy Wales, Founder at Wikimedia Foundation
A 'Wiki' Future
Mr. Wales presents how open-source, open-content technology is changing the Internet and how businesses must adapt in the face of this rapidly evolving technology in order to compete and innovate. Businesses today are starting to use the same collaborative tools that Wikipedia employs.
The story of Wikipedia is one of enabling frictionless contribution, while still providing sufficient control to create a quality product and avoid vandalism. Learning from the monumental success of the Wikipedia model, these underlying principles can help enterprises achieve similar goals in their organizations.
