We were so mesmerized by the beauty of how he was playing that we watched for well over a half an hour. When we ran out of beer, we trucked back to the Flamingo to get some more

U.S. Congressman Charles Rangel reflects on Korean War

Sixty-two years ago today, the two Koreas signed an armistice treaty, ending the 1950-1953 Korean War.
To mark the occasion,... our Hwang Sung-hee sat down with U.S. Congressman Charles Rangel, a Korean War veteran himself, for his views on the war and hopes for the two Koreas going forward. ″So Congressman, how do you remember the Korean War?″
″I try not to remember the Korean War. That was 60 years ago, 65 years ago. And it was a nightmare, a nightmare. I try not ever, ever to think about the tens of thousands of Koreans, Americans and people from over 20 countries being killed. But if you talk about stopping communism and the Republic of Korea blossoming to become anchor of democracy in that area, then I wish the war wasn′t necessary but there is no question that God has been good to Korea in the recovery.″
″You′ve been honored as a war hero for your participation in the Korean War. How has your participation changed you?″
″Having the type of casualites that we had, you wonder, why did we survive with all of the wounded and deaths that took place? This is a sense of guilt because the heroes are the people that gave their lives. Their families have changed and they are not here to see the results of that war. I can never think of a more gracious people than the South Koreans because wherever I go there are flowers, there are medals, there are recognition and I really accept it for those who lost their lives.″
″As a man who bravely fought in the Korean War, how do you assess the current situation between the divided Koreas?″
″How that imaginary line, that 38th parallel, can divide cultures and people with the same blood. I didn′t want to get involved in a war. But I did get involved and I have an investment in Korea, not by choice. And I have an opportunity, not as just a guy on the street say, ′What a sad story ′ but a senior man in the Congress, and being able to say it to the North Koreans, ′What′s more important than bringing your Korean people together?′″
″You are one of the longest serving House member. What do you hope to see happen on the Korean Peninsula before your term as a U.S. Congressman ends?″
″I hope that one day, no matter how strong the communist is that they think about their children, their grandchildren, the value of peace over warfare. I hope that that happens while I′m in Congress and I′ll be working through on those goals. If I′m not in congress, I can′t make a major change but I can be a part of that working toward that goal and I enjoy doing it as long as I believe that it is positive contribution.″
″Thank you congressman for your time today.″

The US reported that North Korea mistreated prisoners of war: soldiers were beaten, starved, put to forced labor, marched to death, and summarily executed.
The KPA killed POWs at the battles for Hill 312, Hill 303, the Pusan Perimeter, and Daejeon—discovered during early after-battle mop-up actions by the UN forces. Later, a US Congress war crimes investigation, the United States Senate Subcommittee on Korean War Atrocities of the Permanent Subcommittee of the Investigations of the Committee on Government Operations reported that "... two-thirds of all American prisoners of war in Korea died as a result of war crimes."
Although the Chinese rarely executed prisoners like their Korean counterparts, mass starvation and diseases swept through the Chinese run POW camps during the winter of 1950--51. About 43 percent of all US POWs died during this period. The Chinese defended their actions by stating that all Chinese soldiers during this period were suffering mass starvation and diseases due to the lack of competent logistics system. The UN POWs, however, disputed the claim by pointing out that most of the Chinese camps were located near the easily supplied Sino-Korean border, and that starvation was used to force the prisoners to accept the communism indoctrinations programs, which were running in full swing after the starvation was over.
The North Korean Government reported some 70,000 ROK Army POWs; 8,000 were repatriated. South Korea repatriated 76,000 Korean People's Army POWs. Besides the 12,000 UN Command forces POWs dead in captivity, the KPA might have press-ganged some 50,000 ROK POWs into the North Korean military. Per the South Korean Ministry of Defense, there remained some 560 Korean POWs detained in North Korea in 2008; from 1994 until 2009, some 79 ROK POWs escaped the North.
The North Korean Government denied having POWs from the Korean War, and, via the Korean Central News Agency, reported that the UN forces killed some 33,600 KPA POWs; that on 19 July 1951, in POW Camp No. 62, some 100 POWs were killed as machine-gunnery targets; that on 27 May 1952, in the 77th Camp, Koje Island (now in Geoje), the ROK Army incinerated with flamethrowers some 800 KPA POWs who rejected "voluntary repatriation" south, and instead demanded repatriation north.
In December 1950, National Defense Corps was founded, the soldiers were 406,000 drafted citizens. In the winter of 1951, 50,000 to 90,000 South Korean National Defense Corps soldiers starved to death while marching southward under the Chinese offensive when their commanding officers embezzled funds earmarked for their food. This event is called the National Defense Corps Incident.

Freedom guardians who risked their lives to help injured soldiers
Arirang TV has prepared a program about nurses and nursing officers who took care of wounded soldiers and civilians during the war on the Korean Peninsula. Their devotion and warm hearts made them the unsung heroines of the Korean War.
The devotion and love of white angels
These people risked their lives to save the lives of soldiers, who were like family to them. They put the soldiers′ needs ahead of their own, and did their utmost to help the wounded survive and recover. Even after half a century these nurses still cry.
Efforts of nursing officers dispatched worldwide
When the Korean War broke out, many countries sent their troops to help Korea. But the troops didn′t come alone - they were accompanied by nurses and nursing officers. Six nations including India, Italy and Norway sent their medics. The United States, which dispatched the most troops, also sent more than 500 nursing officers. The American nursing officers had to work under the same conditions as soldiers.
After the soldiers left following the cease-fire, the nurses stayed.
Their devotion continued even after the war.
After the Korean War, the Republic of Korea was completely ruined. Most of the soldiers returned to their home countries, but the nurses stayed in Korea. To them, the war was not over yet. They stayed to take care of wounded soldiers and war orphans. They believed that their duty was to help Koreans regain stability as soon as possible.
Korean nursing officers who carry on the spirit of Florence Nightingale in the world′s war zones
Sixty years after the end of the Korean War, Korea, a country with a tragic history, is contributing to establishing peace around the world. Korean nursing officers visit disputed regions in various parts of the globe to carry on the spirit of Florence Nightingale, just like the nursing officers from other countries did during the Korean War.

Harlem has been an enduring symbol of African-American political power in New York City for decades, from Adam Clayton Powell Jr.’s iconic civil rights protests to Hillary Clinton's carefully choreographed visits as she explored a Senate campaign in 1999. And for 45 years, voters in the district anchored by Harlem have sent Rep. Charles Rangel to Washington to represent them. Rangel will retire in 2016, but while the congressman hasn’t changed since 1970, the congressional district has. As Latino voters have grown in power and prominence nationally and within the Democratic Party, shifting boundaries and an influx of Puerto Rican and Dominican-American residents have also changed the fabric of Rangel’s now-majority-Hispanic district.

Will the 23rd time be the charm? Longtime U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel hopes so.
Rangel's campaign to return to the House of Representatives once again is the most high-profile of the congressional primaries being voted on around the state Tuesday.
Other races include primaries for candidates looking to succeed retiring Democratic Reps. Carolyn McCarthy on Long Island and Bill Owens in upstate New York.
Rangel, 84, is facing what could be his tightest race: the Democratic primary for the 13th Congressional District.
His main opponent is state Sen. Adriano Espaillat, who is seeking to become the first member of Congress born in the Dominican Republic.
In such a heavily Democratic city, the primary victor is widely expected to win the general election in November.
Rangel beat Espaillat by about 1,000 votes two years ago in a race that included disputed election results and a lawsuit.
If anything, this year's campaign has been even nastier, including charges of racial politics in a redrawn district covering northern Manhattan and the Bronx that was historically black but has become majority Hispanic.
Rangel has insisted he's the best person for the job because of his decades of experience in Washington.
But Espaillat has often pointed to what's happened to Rangel in recent years, including a 2010 ethics scandal in which he was found guilty of 11 House charges.
That forced him to relinquish his post as chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
Rangel, who entered Congress in 1970 after beating longtime politician Adam Clayton Powell Jr., is best known for a low-income tax credit that fueled the nation's largest affordable housing program and for creating an empowerment zone that changed the face of Harlem.
A Siena poll released last week showed Rangel leading Espaillat by 13 percentage points with a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
The poll surveyed 708 likely primary voters June 14-18.

FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus012716
The bitterly fought Democratic primary race between U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel and his challenger state Sen. Adriano Espaillat was too close to call early Wednesday despite a late-night declaration of victory by the 22-term congressman.
With 99 percent of the vote counted in unofficial results, Rangel led Espaillat 47.4 percent to 43.7 percent, a difference of fewer than 2,000 votes from about 47,000 votes counted on Tuesday.
The Associated Press was not declaring a winner because the city Board of Elections was unable to say how many absentee and affidavit ballots were outstanding. The board said no further information on those ballots would be immediately released.
The counting of those paper ballots can take up to two weeks. The process was to begin later Wednesday.
The uncertainty provided a fittingly bizarre conclusion to a drama-filled race.
Rangel, the 84-year-old Lion of Harlem, took the stage in a Harlem ballroom around 11 p.m. Tuesday before a victory had been declared, saying he wanted to "sweat it out" with his supporters.
Moments later, the stage buckled under the weight of the congressman and more than a dozen elected officials who wanted to stand near him. After determining that no one was hurt, Rangel, between frequent attempts at shushing the crowd, began to deliver a rambling speech that was part thank you, part real-time political analysis.
Acknowledging that he was "killing time" as the votes were being counted, he held court for nearly an hour, introducing speakers and asking his advisers and members of the press for updates on the latest totals.
Finally, after a local TV station called the race, balloons dropped from the ceiling as supporter Rep. Gregory Meeks, a New York Democrat, cheered, "The Chairman has won! The Chairman has won!"
Rangel, the face of Harlem politics for generations, raised his arms aloft and smiled. There is not a Republican contender for the seat, all but assuring Rangel's 23rd term in Congress.
"This was your victory," Rangel told the crowd. "This is your congressman. And you can rest assured all I will be doing is thinking about you and bringing resources back home."
But Espaillat, bidding to become the first person born in the Dominican Republic to be elected to Congress, refused to concede. He told supporters that the "race was too close to call," and his campaign said that several thousand absentee and provisional ballots remained uncounted.
And even as Espaillat's stage was quickly dismantled and his party emptied out, the possibility of a legal challenge was raised, which could lead to a sequel to the candidates' 2012 primary. The result of that race, which Rangel won by about 1,000 votes, took two weeks to finalize.
Rangel, once arguably the most influential black elected official in the U.S., is known for his gravelly voice, impeccable suits and staunch liberal views, including his outspoken opposition to apartheid and the Iraq War.
But he was weakened after 2010 ethics violations that forced him to give up the chairmanship of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, and his district was then redrawn to include parts of the Bronx, which along with accelerating gentrification of Harlem transformed a heavily black district into one that was majority Hispanic.
The shifting racial terrain was a backdrop for the race, which grew nastier as primary day approached.
At a debate, Rangel said Espaillat "wants to be the Jackie Robinson of the Dominicans in the Congress," adding that Espaillat should tell voters "just what the heck has he done besides saying he's a Dominican?"
"I feel that he has the ability to do a better job," supporter Lily Cabrera said.
