More and more, travelling far away to run a half or full marathon has become an attractive goal for today’s runners. This was the case for twelve runners from Singapore, where RunSociety recently accompanied for the Chosun Ilbo Chuncheon International Marathon race report. Along with their families, the group of athletes enjoyed an eight day and six night long tour that took them through the myriad of adventures in Seoul. Chuncheon (Hangul: 춘천; RR: Chuncheon-si) is the capital of Gangwon Province, South Korea. The city lies in the northeast of the county, located in a basin formed by the Soyang River and Han River. There are some large lakes around the city, most notably Lake Soyang and Lake Uiam. The area is renowned for its small river islands, such as Sangjungdo, Ha-Jungdo, Bungeodo, and Wido.

It is a popular destination among east Asian tourists as it was featured in the popular Korean drama Winter Sonata. It is where the resort island of Namiseom is located.

Chuncheon is a hometown of a famous soccer player Son Heung Min, who is currently playing at Hamburger SV in Bundesliga the German football league.

The area now occupied by the city was first settled about 1000 years ago. In 637 AD the city was called Usooju. In 757 AD it was renamed Saku and again in 940 AD as Chunju (春州) before receiving its current name in 1413. In 1896, Chuncheon became the capital city of Gangwon province. The city was largely destroyed during the Korean War during the Battle of Chuncheon.

Although his grave wasn't discovered, there were a pile of stones where his body was supposed to be buried. A tour company arranged the grave with soil and then developed Namisum into an amusement park.

Seoul's Cycling Mecca=Yeouido/Han RiverCan’t think of a better thing to do when hanging out in a super modern city like Seoul, South Korea then to go for a bike ride. It’s a great way to see another side of life here besides the typical tourist things like visiting temples, museums and going shopping plus it’s so up close to everyday life here. I actually got my idea for this ride from the latest Lonely Planet Korea guide with a few modifications to the route. Let’s call them accidental modifications. I started out from Yeouido Park where you can rent bikes starting at 3000 won an hour, about $2.50 USD. Yeouido is considered the mecca for cycling in Seoul. First stop was the Mapo Bridge where there is a designated cycle path making it safe and convenient to check out the views. The Han River is the fourth longest river on the Korean Peninsula with a total length of almost 500km. This river was once a very large trade route with China through the Yellow Sea however due to estuary location at the borders of North and South Korea the river is no longer actively used for navigation. An exit ramp from the other side of the bridge takes you to the north side of the river with great cycling paths. Keeping to the left on this path will continue your journey along the Han River. The destination for this cycle is the Seoul World Cup Stadium, built for the FIFA World Cup in 2002. A great view of the beautiful domed National Assembly Building across the river. the legislative branch of the South Korean national government. Keep riding along the path past this cliff and under the Yanghwa and Seongsan Bridges. More at:fareastadventuretravel.com

Moments in Seoul: Travel and Shopping Guide (Petite France, Nami Island, Seoul) Namisum is a tiny half-moon shaped island located in Chuncheon, South Korea, formed as it was inundated by the rising water of the North Han River as the result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam (청평댐) in 1944. Its name originated from General Nami (남이장군),[1] who died at the age of 28 after being falsely accused of treason during the reign of King Sejo, the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. Although his grave wasn't discovered, there were a pile of stones where his body was supposed to be buried. It was believed that if someone took even one stone from there, it would bring misfortune to their house. A tour company arranged the grave with soil and then developed Namisum into an amusement park.
