Plot: Sarny, a 12-year-old slave girl in the ante-bellum South, faces a relatively hopeless life. Her chief duties at the plantation of Clel Waller are serving at table, spitting tobacco juice on roses to prevent bugs, and secretly conveying intimate messages between Waller's wife, Callie, and Dr. Chamberlaine. Then Nightjohn arrives. A former runaway slave who bears telltale scars on his back, he takes Sarny under his wing and, in exchange for a pinch of tobacco, secretly begins to teach her to read and write, a crime punishable by death. "Words," he says, "are freedom. Slavery is made of words: laws, deeds and passes." He starts by drawing letters in the dirt and cautions her that no one must know. At her baptism, Sarny steals a Bible that belongs to Waller's son, Jeffrey, and practices reading by lantern-light in the slave quarters. The same Bible serves another purpose when, on a blank page taken from it, Nightjohn forges a pass for Outlaw, a young slave, to use in escaping to freedom in the North with his beloved Egypt, a slave on another plantation. Waller finds the Bible and demands to know who stole it. Delie, who cared for Sarny as a child, fears for her now and accepts the blame. But Nightjohn forestalls the lashing Delie is to receive, saying he's the one, for he can read. He tries to run away but is caught, and his hand is tied to a chopping block. With an ax, Waller delivers the severing blow, exacting the brutal penalty for Nightjohn's literacy. As he is dragged off to be sold, he tells Sarny, "When they cut off one hand, the other hand grows stronger." That night Sarny writes a pass for Egypt that will let her join Outlaw on the flight to freedom. Two days later their escape is discovered and the false passes found. Waller knows Nightjohn wrote Outlaw's pass. But who wrote the second? He interrupts a church service to demand the answer, threatening to kill all his slaves if no one tells. Sarny confesses, but declares he'll kill no one, for the slaves represent his wealth. As Waller raises his rifle, Sarny implores Callie to speak up for her, hinting that she has read the messages to Dr. Chamberlaine. Callie refuses, but the doctor, fearful Sarny will reveal the relationship, says he's at fault. He tells of teaching Egypt some reading and writing, but now declares it was a mistake. Callie orders that Sarny be sold, and as the girl is joined to a line of other slaves, she asks if any of them have tobacco to trade. What has she to give in return? they want to know. And Sarny draws an A in the dirt.

Long before the Greek and Roman artists depicted and described the most intimate aspects of human behaviour the ancient Egyptians had been practising their sensual expression for centuries. Erotica flowed through all levels of society like the waters of the Nile and although the evidence is scarcer it is no less potent.
Ancient Egyptians believed that life, sexuality and rebirth were elements that went hand in hand.
Marriage seems to have been a voluntary affair and for the most part monogamous - mainly because polygamy, whilst not illegal, was expensive.
Adultery was considered a serious crime and carried severe punishments including the cutting off of the nose.
There is no doubt that prostitution flourished in ancient Egypt and that it played it’s part in the scheme of things, whether it was being carried out at one of the well established pleasure houses, or under the guidance of the temple.
During the reign of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, known as the Amarna period, the king is regularly portrayed as a woman with small breasts, narrow waist and rounded hips. And, sometimes, it is difficult to tell him apart from his beautiful wife, Nefertiti.
The reputation of Egyptians as an incestual race is not a strictly deserved one. Although there are clear cases of royal families marrying close relatives it must be understood that this was done to secure the royal blood line and preserve peace and legitimacy, rather than for debauched reasons.
Love poems and erotic texts are numerous and it is obvious that the ancient Egyptian man was not afraid of demonstrating his love. He speaks through tales of gods, poetry, dreams and wisdom books.
Egypt, like many others societies, was strong on symbolism, for example the lotus flower and the mandrake represented love.

Ancient Egypt was a civilization of ancient Northeastern Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt. It is one of six
civilizations globally to arise independently. Egyptian civilization coalesced around 3150 BC (according to conventional Egyptian chronology) with the political unification of Upper
and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh. The history of ancient Egypt occurred in a series of stable Kingdoms, separated by periods of relative instability known as Intermediate Periods:
the Old Kingdom of the Early Bronze Age, the Middle Kingdom of the Middle Bronze Age and the New Kingdom of the Late Bronze Age.
Egypt reached the pinnacle of its power during the New Kingdom, in the Ramesside period where it rivalled the Hittite Empire, Assyrian Empire and Mitanni Empire, after which it entered a
period of slow decline. Egypt was invaded or conquered by a succession of foreign powers, such as the Canaanites/Hyksos, Libyans, the Nubians, the Assyrians, Babylonians, the Achaemenid
Persians, and the Macedonians in the Third Intermediate Period and the Late Period of Egypt. In the aftermath of Alexander the Great's death, one of his generals, Ptolemy Soter, established
himself as the new ruler of Egypt. This Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty ruled Egypt until 30 BC, when, under Cleopatra, it fell to the Roman Empire and became a Roman province.
The success of ancient Egyptian civilization came partly from its ability to adapt to the conditions of the Nile River valley for agriculture. The predictable flooding and controlled
irrigation of the fertile valley produced surplus crops, which supported a more dense population, and social development and culture. With resources to spare, the administration sponsored
mineral exploitation of the valley and surrounding desert regions, the early development of an independent writing system, the organization of collective construction and agricultural
projects, trade with surrounding regions, and a military intended to defeat foreign enemies and assert Egyptian dominance. Motivating and organizing these activities was a bureaucracy of
elite scribes, religious leaders, and administrators under the control of a pharaoh, who ensured the cooperation and unity of the Egyptian people in the context of an elaborate system of
religious beliefs.
The many achievements of the ancient Egyptians include the quarrying, surveying and construction techniques that supported the building of monumental pyramids, temples, and obelisks; a system
of mathematics, a practical and effective system of medicine, irrigation systems and agricultural production techniques, the first known ships, Egyptian faience and glass technology,
new forms of literature, and the earliest known peace treaty, made with the Hittites. Egypt left a lasting legacy. Its art and architecture were widely copied, and its antiquities
carried off to far corners of the world. Its monumental ruins have inspired the imaginations of travelers and writers for centuries. A new-found respect for antiquities and excavations
in the early modern period by Europeans and Egyptians led to the scientific investigation of Egyptian civilization and a greater appreciation of its cultural legacy.

Menes, the founding king of the First Dynasty and the first pharaoh to unify Upper and Lower Egypt into one kingdom, oversaw the construction of the world's first dam, a massive, 50-foot-high wall that protected Egypt's capital Memphis from the Nile's ravaging flood waters.
An enterprising young pharaoh named Djoser, in 2668 B.C. commissioned a colossal burial tomb which would become the first stone building ever erected on Earth, and the first of Egypt's 100 pyramids.
Pharaoh Snefru, who married his half-sister in an effort to solidify his claim to the throne, was a benevolent leader but a brutal warrior who looted neighboring kingdoms to finance his architectural ambitions. Through a series of trials and catastrophic errors, he elevated the art of pyramid building to a new level.
Snefru's son Khufu built on his father's engineering experience to create the biggest and most perfect pyramid ever constructed: the Great Pyramid at Giza. Each of the building's four 700-foot sides was almost perfectly symmetrical, and each corner of the pyramid was level within fractions of an inch.
Essentially inventing military architecture, Pharaoh Sesostris III, the great warrior, conquered gold-rich Nubia with the help of a network of 17 vast and sophisticated fortresses stretching hundreds of miles into enemy territory.
The rebel pharaoh Akhenaten (father of Tutankhamen) who, based on a religious vision, moved Egypt's capital to a barren patch of desert virtually overnight-requiring his engineers to develop far faster building techniques. Within two years, the bustling city housed 20,000 people.
Ramesses II, who fathered more than 100 children, combined engineering and ego on an unprecedented scale to build two temples at Abu Simbel, one for himself and one for his beloved queen, Nefertari. Carved out of the face of a virgin cliff, Ramesses' monument was adorned by 69-foot solid rock statues and a lavishly decorated sanctuary built 200 feet inside the mountain.

Planet Egypt - Episode 1: Birth of the Empire (History Documentary)
For many decades, archaeological excavations and scientific expeditions throughout the entire region have been attempting to solve the mystery of what held the Empire by the Nile together for so long. The four-part series Planet Egypt delves deep into crucial periods in the history of the Pharaohs. The documentary depicts the founding of the Empire under King Narmer, the rise of Egypt to a world power under Thutmose III, the revolution during the reign of Akhenaten and the enormous surge in construction activity under Pharaoh Ramses the Great. By means of dramatic re-enactments and lavish computer animations, Terra-X resurrects the world of Ancient Egypt. Entire cities such as Hierakonpolis, Thebes and Amarna are reconstructed in 3-D animations and brought back to life. Each episode sheds light on one of the vital foundation stones at the base of this extraordinary civilisation.
EPISODE 1: BIRTH OF THE EMPIRE
The history of Egypt is one of unparalleled success. But how was the Kingdom of Egypt united in the first place? To solve the mystery of how Egypt was born, we follow archaeologists as they examine the very beginning of the rule of the Pharaohs. It's the time now known as "Dynasty Zero" -- Egypt's pre-dynastic period -- a previously little known episode that sets Egypt on course for some of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. The film discovers that, through both war and peace, it was the mysterious King Narmer who laid the foundations for the continuing rule of the Pharaohs -- a success story lasting more than 3000 years.

Inside The Great Pyramid Of Egypt Documentary - Ancient Egypt's Hidden Secrets - History Videos
A pyramid is a framework whose external surfaces are triangular and converge to a single point at the top, making the shape roughly a pyramid in the geometric sense. The base of a pyramid can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any type of polygon shape, meaning that a pyramid has at the very least three external triangular surface areas (at the very least 4 faces consisting of the base). The square pyramid, with square base and also 4 triangular external surface areas, is an usual version.
A pyramid's design, with most the weight better to the ground, and with the pyramidion on the top methods that less product higher up on the pyramid will be lowering from above. This circulation of weight enabled very early people to create secure monumental structures.
Pyramids have actually been developed by civilizations in several parts of the arena. For thousands of years, the biggest structures in the world were pyramids-- first the Red Pyramid in the Dashur God's acre then the Terrific Pyramid of Khufu, both of Egypt, the last the just one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient Globe still continuing to be. Khufu's Pyramid is developed generally of sedimentary rock (with huge red granite blocks utilized in some indoor chambers), as well as is thought about a building work of art. It consists of over 2,300,000 blocks varying in weight from 2.5 tonnes (5,500 lb) to 15 tonnes (33,000 lb) [4] as well as is built on a square base with sides gauging the 230 m (755 ft), covering 13 acres. Its 4 sides encounter the four cardinal points exactly as well as it has an angle of 52 degrees. The original elevation of the Pyramid was 146.5 m (488 ft), but today it is simply 137 m (455 feet) strong, the 9 m (33 feet) that is missing out on is due to the theft of the great top quality white Tura sedimentary rock covering, or casing stones, for construction in Cairo. It is still the highest pyramid. The biggest pyramid by volume is the Terrific Pyramid of Cholula, in the Mexican state of Puebla.

The Black Pharaohs - Nubian Pharaohs (Ancient Egypt History Documentary)
Dr Vivian Davies claims that a recently discovered set of hieroglyphs proves that, in 800 BC, Egypt was under the rule of black Pharaohs from neighbouring Nubia. This film examines the impact of these sensational discoveries.
Historians have long known about Kush, but relegated its importance to a vassal state of Egypt, significant only for its gold reserves. Early excavations in the Kush capital at Kerma suffered from the innate racism of the archaeologists. Fabulous grave goods, discovered in the 20th century, were thought to have belonged to Kush's Egyptian overlords. They didn't consider that a black African culture could have challenged Egypt's supremacy.
The inscription exposed the truth. Although it won battles, Kush eventually lost the war, and for the next 1000 years, Egypt had the upper hand. But the inscription served as a warning prophecy to Egypt that it might pay a high price. The enslaved Kushites would have their revenge. Allowed, and even encouraged, to rebuild their own kingdom along the lines of Egypt, in 747 BC, Kush attacked the Pharaoh's power in a daring land grab.
The Kushite king, Piye, overthrew the yoke, conquered mighty Egypt and established a 100-year rule of black Pharaohs. Even after being ousted from the Egyptian throne, Kushite kings continued to rule an empire as mighty as any, until the arrival of Alexander the Great. For a number of years, British Museum archaeologists have been making find after find in the Upper Nile Valley to substantiate this story - huge lost pyramids, burial chambers of 200 workers, and stores of gold.

Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt.
Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques.
The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices.
Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even older church in the Coptic district of Cairo. The three-aisled basilica was founded by Roman Christians at the end of the 4th century.
Built in 1902, the Egyptian Museum's 150,000 exhibits amount to being one of the greatest historical collections in the world. When both the Greek and Roman civilizations had reached the zenith of their power, Egypt already had a history that dated back almost 3,000 years.
In 1830, King Mohammed Ali had a mosque built and named it after himself but it is now more commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque. It was 18 years in construction and was built on the site of a former Mamluk Palace.
Egypt and its capital of Cairo is the oldest cultural land on Earth. A country that impresses with both its 5,000 years of history and lively modern spirit.

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt.
Cairo is a cultural melting pot and with a population of sixteen million it is the largest metropolis on the African continent. The Egyptian people refer to their capital city as Um Al Dunya, ‘Mother of the World’. The history of the Sankt Sergius Church dates back to Abu Serga in the 5th century A.D. Legend has it that it was built on the site where the Holy Family once sought refuge. Thus, the richly decorated church is a popular Christian place of pilgrimage and is situated in Fustat in the middle of Koptic, the oldest district in Cairo. The spacious Mamelucks Necropolis is unique within the Islamic world. Here, instead of conventional graves, entire houses were built for the dead. Within the necropolis the mosques and mausoleums of the Mameluck sovereigns are particularly interesting. Built in 1900, each day the Egypt Museum attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience for themselves the legendary treasures of ancient history that comprise more than 120,000 different objects from 4500 years of Egyptian history, including the unique Tut-Ench-Amun exhibition. Cairo really does strive to do justice to its name, Mother of the World. After all, it was this city that united the glory of the Pharaos with the Early Christian and Islamic worlds..

We can travel all the biblical sceneriess of the Sinai Peninsula, and as a rest, we can have a boat voyage along the world's longest river - the Nile, take a holiday in one of the luxury resorts of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, or practise diving among the coral reefs of the Red Sea.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Sharm El-Sheikh, which lies on the Sinai Peninsula opposite or Hurghada. This
is the new holiday Capital of Egypt which awaits vacationers arriving to see the coral reefs of the Red Sea, but it's also a perfect place to start an excursion to Biblical Monuments of the Peninsula.
Sharm El-Sheikh lies on the Sinai Peninsula opposite or Hurghada. This is the new holiday Capital of Egypt which awaits vacationers arriving to see the coral reefs of the Red Sea, but it's also a perfect place to start an excursion to Biblical Monuments of the Peninsula. Together with the Na'ama and the Shark Bays, Sharm El-Sheikh became a tourist center only in the last decade. Tourist can familiarize themselves with characteristic Egyptian souvenirs on the coastal shopping street of the city.
The main role is played by the water pipes or shishas which are perfect as an ornament. The statues depict Pharaohs and Egyptian gods, and the baskets of the street merchants are full of spices. Arabian clothes are very popular as well as T-shirts printed with local motifs, and bottles filled with colored sand from the desert. The caricature-like ceramics depicting the everyday Arab life are really extraordinary. One can combine an eventful though tiring Archaeological tour with a holiday providing full relaxation. The hotel prices are very good, the weather very warm from spring to autumn, and moreover, the holiday centers of Egypt can be reached easily from all over Europe since Sharm El-Sheikh has its own International Airport. The level of service is usually a pleasant surprise to those who have never been to Egypt before.
A name of the customers' choice can be carved or written on copper plates or papyrus with either Egyptian hieroglyphs or Latin letters. Since most hotels have their own beaches, public beaches are very rare, however there are some in Na'ama Bay. The pride of the growing city is the palm tree lane behind the hotels and the brand new Islamic mosque built for the Arabs working and living here.
The old market was a bazaar at the time when only fisherman lived here. Fishing nets and storm lanterns can still be purchased at the market. Formerly, it was only a vegetable and fruit market, but for the sake of tourists, the supply was broaden by copper plates and silverware, papyrus, alabaster statues, and postcards.
Near the grocery store, a goat is begging and willing to be photographed, fully aware of its special status.
The hotels here are made up of long buildings, not high skyscrapers. The buildings and apartments are situated in beautiful parks surrounding uniquely designed pools. The hotels have their own beaches with not only the possibility to rent water sports equipment but to take diving and surfing lessons as well. There are two ways of diving, the simpler one is with the goggles and the pipe and is called snorkeling, while the other one is done in a diving suit with and oxygen tank and is called scuba diving. Both sports can be practiced in the Red Sea and the necessary can be rented or purchased.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Hurghada, a holiday resort in Egypt which stretches from Safaga throughout
the Makadi Bay until Dahar, a coast of 25 kilometers which is now full of beautiful hotels and apartments. Hurghada has two centers, Sakala and Dahar. Transportation is solved by buses of the travel agencies by taxis or by cheaper larger taxis.
As a holiday resort, Hurghada has a sum of longer history than Sharm el-Sheik. This resort which stretches from Safaga throughout the Makadi Bay until'Dahar is a coast of 25 kilometers, which is now full of beautiful hotels and apartments.
Hurghada has two centers, Sakala and Dahar. Transportation is solved by buses of the travel agencies, by taxis or by cheaper larger taxis. In the city, there is an aquarium and maritime museum despite the fact that it does not require much effort at all to encounter the creatures of the red sea in their natural habitat.
Dahar is mostly known for its shops and restaurants, there are not too many monuments. Well known as the newly built Islamic mosque which was consecrated only a few years ago but looks as if it were several hundred years old. The modest church of the Copts is much older.
The Greeks called the Egyptians, Aegyptos, hence the Arabic, Gypt, which became Copt though the centuries. According to the chronicles, it was Saint Mark who brought Christianity to Alexandria in the 1st century. The five Patriarchs parted ways with the Catholic Church in the 451, today around 7% of the population belongs to this denomination.
All the hotels are on the seaside and have their own beaches and harbors. The hotels try to please their visitors in all kinds of ways. There are small pools, slides near the larger pools but children's pools and the Jacuzzis are also everywhere. Besides European cuisines, they also offer Arab Dishes, mostly an imitation Bedouin tense. One can enjoy a hookah pipe and belly dancing here. If there's no separate children's restaurants, there is a children's menu. Host and program directors take care of sports and recreation, and there's a different kind of production each evening.
Glass bottomed boats depart from several hotels to the nearby, uninhabited Giftun Island. The Red Sea has one of the largest fish populations on earth. There's an opportunity to sea playful dolphins during such a trip since 4 dolphin subspecies live here. Besides the uncredible number of corals, starfish, mussels and crabs, there are three kinds of turtles, calamares, octopi, jellyfish, and rays living here. The most beautiful of the fishes are the 10 centimeter long yellow, turquoise, orange or blue fishes that swim around the coral reefs. The most well-known are the sail fish, the clown fish, the king fish, and the unusually shaped stone fish.

AS OF 4th NOVEMBER 2015 BRITISH FLIGHTS TO Sharm EGYPT HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED !!!!! Hello this is my advice for you. I have been to Egypt about 30 times, but this time July 2015, everything has changed. The temples are void of tourists. I was the only one in Karnak and Luxor temple. You are now not allowed to vist the Edfu Horus temple. Security is so tight it ruins your holiday. I was cocky, and I went this week, it was scary, and I wish I had not have gone. I surggest booking somewhere else for your next holiday.

Country #21 in 2015 was EGYPT! After being denied visas to enter Sudan with our overland vehicle- we spent a little extra time in Ethiopia before heading to Egypt where we got up to some crazy things before meeting back up with the truck at the Sudan/Egypt border. Egypt is a country of many wonders and with the recent travel advisories, the country is almost empty of tourists. While we found this lovely, it was hard to see the impact this has had on the locals and their way of life. Yet, the wonders of Egypt are still there waiting to be explored. Highly recommended destination. Explore our Egypt section on our travel blog http://www.divergenttravelers.com/destinations/egypt/

Egypt Travel Guide - Egypt (Arabic: مصر; officially, the Arab Republic of Egypt) is in north-eastern Africa with its capital located in its largest city, Cairo. Egypt also extends into Asia by virtue of holding the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt is bordered by Israel and the Gaza Strip to the north-east, by Sudan to the south and by Libya to the west. The country is bounded by the Mediterranean and Red Seas (to the north and east respectively) and geographically dominated both by the Nile River and its fertile well-watered valley, and by the Eastern and Western deserts.
Egypt is perhaps best known as the home of the ancient Egyptian civilization, with its temples, hieroglyphs, mummies, and - visible above all - its pyramids. Less well-known is Egypt's medieval heritage, courtesy of Coptic Christianity and Islam - ancient churches, monasteries and mosques punctuate the Egyptian landscape. Egypt stimulates the imagination of western tourists like few other countries and is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations world-wide.
The regularity and richness of the annual Nile River flood, coupled with semi-isolation provided by deserts to the east and west, allowed for the development of one of the world's great civilizations. A unified kingdom arose around 3200 B.C. and a series of dynasties ruled in Egypt for the next three millennia. The last native dynasty fell to the Persians in 341 B.C., who in turn were replaced by the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines. It was the Arabs who introduced Islam and the Arabic language in the 7th century and who ruled for the next six centuries. A local military caste, the Mamluks, took control about 1250 and continued to govern after the conquest of Egypt by the Ottoman Turks in 1517. Following the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, Egypt became an important world transportation hub, but also fell heavily into debt. Ostensibly to protect its investments, Britain seized control of Egypt's government in 1882, but nominal allegiance to the Ottoman Empire continued until 1914. Partially independent from the UK in 1922. The completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1971 and the resultant Lake Nasser have altered the time-honored place of the Nile River in agriculture and the ecology of Egypt. A rapidly growing population (the largest in the Arab world), limited arable land, and dependence on the Nile all continue to overtax resources and stress society. The government has struggled to prepare the economy for the new millennium through economic reform and massive investment in communications and physical infrastructure.

The Pyramids Of Gizeh are undoubtedly one of the most impressive and famous historic sites of ancient Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs, a land whose treasures are still, more than four thousand years after their construction, remarkable. A total of 2.3 million stone blocks form the largest pyramid, the Cheops, that was built in around 2560 B.C. on an elevated plateau on the edge of the western desert. The huge contours of the pyramids of Gizeh still dominate Cairo’s surrounding landscape. Their dimensions symbolize timeless power and in red shining colours the sky announces the fall of dusk and highlights the dramatic, magical beauty of these monuments. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser rises up almost seventy metres above the ground and it was the world’s first monumental stone building. Thus the Step Pyramid is often referred to as the ‘mother of all pyramids’. A narrow maze-like corridor leads from the outside world into the dark depths of the pyramid and the Pharaoh´s tomb. The flowering period of Thebes began in the Middle Empire when it became the new capital and lasted up until around the 14th century B.C. when Memphis regained its importance and influence. Today Thebes is closely connected with this town of death along the western shore of the Nile and the legendary Valley Of The Kings. In 1922 the discovery of the royal tomb of Tutenkhamen by British archaeologist, Howard Carter, was particularly important. After five years of excavation the scientists were successful and the spectacular treasures surpassed their highest expectations. Although Tutenkhamen died at the tender age of nineteen, his rule thus having little historical significance, the treasures in his tomb made him one of the most famous kings of Ancient Egypt. Today his legendary sarcophagus, that is made entirely of gold, is exhibited in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Up until now more than seventy tombs have been found in the neighbouring Valley Of The Queens. Princes who died at an early age were also buried there and the grave of Nefertari, the wife of Ramses the Second, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the valley. The Land of the Pharaohs is a fantastic and colourful journey into the intriguing depths of ancient history.

kingdom, Memphis and Thebes were both capitals. According to the Rosetta stone, it was an important religious center of the time of the Ptolemys and was forgotten during the time of the Mamluks.
The former capital of Egypt, Memphis was established by Pharaoh Menes during the first dynasty. On a dawn of the new kingdom, Memphis and Thebes were both capitals. According to the Rosetta stone, it was an important religious center of the time of the Ptolemys. It was forgotten during the time of the Mamluks, and plunderers destroyed it. It's statues were scattered, the Nile flooded it several times and covered it with its drifts.
Memphis, which was called the flourishing capital by Herodotus, has since become invisible. Whatever remained, for example the Sphinx depicting Amenhotep II, can't be seen in the palm garden in an open-air museum in the village of Mit Rahina.
Despite all of the 4000 years have done to it, there are many wonderful things to be found here which are incomprehensible to the visitor and cannot be described by the most eloquent speakers. The more you watch it the more you wonder the more you look at it the more delight you find in it, wrote Abd-el-latif.
The originally 14 meter and 80 ton statue of Ramses II is the worlds largest calcite statue. It used to stand on Midan Ramses in Cairo for a long time, however, due to the increased traffic, the original one was taken back to Memphis and was replaced by a copy on the famous Square. Now it's in an exhibition hall in Memphis and reminds one of the great beauty of that city.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Saqqara, which was the burial mound of Memphis. There are monuments from at
least 3000 years on this 7 kilometer long limestone plateau, from the earliest graves to the monastery of the Copt Christians.
Saqqara was the burial mound of Memphis. There are monuments from at least 3000 years on this 7 kilometer long limestone plateau, from the earliest graves to the monastery of the Copt Christians. These buildings, which were covered by sand, were excavated by Auguste Mariette, but there are new findings even today.
Imhotep surrounded the Djoser Pyramid with a 10 meter wall with false doors. There were bastions and tabernacles while within the wall were shrines, halls and chapels. The wall was ornamented by a cobras head. The corridor leading to the yard is bordered by 40 pillars, imitating palm trees. The largest and well know monument of Saqqara is the pyramid of the Pharaoh Djoser. This is the first such structure to be called pyramid, before that, people bury their dead in mastabas. The design of the pyramid is associated with Imhotep, who was not only the greatest Architect of the 3rd dynasty, but also a high priest and a General of the Pharaoh. It was probably his idea to put 6 smaller and smaller square mastabas on top of each other, which led to the shape of the pyramid. His works set an example for Royal Architects for several centuries. Later the stairs of the pyramid were filles up and its size was covered to achieve a perfect pyramid shape.
In a northeastern corner of the area, an extremely deep cistern was discovered. From the bastion above it, the burial ground of the Saint -- bowls, the Serapium, can be seen perfectly, as well as the distant Pyramids of Giza.
It's widely known that all European power, the Germans, the Italians, but mostly the French and the British were present at the rediscovery of Egypt.
Those who are interested in Egyptology might know the names of Denon, Shante Leon, Lazoni, Mariette, Broch, Lepzius, Gaston Maspereau, and of course Howard Carter. Let's not forget the Italian, Girolamo Zagato, who found the entrance of the pyramid in 1820 while drawing a map.
The oldest graffiti in the world originates from the 12th century B.C. It can be found on the wall of one of the side buildings under the protection of a glass case. If one were to do something like this today, it is possible that the author would visit the local jail sooner than his graffiti would be protected by a glass case, the guards are there to prevent any kind of disruption.
The serdab is the close statue chamber of tomb chapels or mastabas from where the Pharaohs statue looks out to the outside world, this is how his soul preserved his relationship with the living. There is the original entrance on the southern side of the pyramid while on the northern one, there is new one, cut by Archaeologists. The burial chambers found beneath the pyramid around the middle of the building. The maze of corridors and chambers is almost 5 kilometers long and is probably connected to the cistern. There are lots of corridors which have not been fully discovered.
The Pyramid of Teti looks like a piece of rubble on the outside but is very interesting on the inside. There aren't too many pyramids which are open to the public. The walls are covered with texts and the ceiling depicts the night sky. The greatest mastaba is the one of Mereruka and his wife, the son in law, and daughter of Teti. One can even see Meruruka himself in the complicated mastaba, which has more than 30 rooms, as his life size statue steps out of a door. There were several claims which stated that grave robbers instantly fled as they saw the statue in the dim light. Almost square meter of the walls is covered by engraving, pictures or hieroglyphs, which introduce viewers to life in ancient times, hunting, fishing, agriculture and animal husbandry. In other pictures, one can see the scenes of raising a child, celebrations, and potters at work.

Italy’s Foreign Minister has confirmed Rome will collaborate with Cairo in an investigation into the death of twenty-eight-year-old student Giulio Regeni.
His half-naked body was found at the side of a road on the outskirts of Cairo. Cigarette burns, cuts and other signs of torture suggesting a ‘slow death’ were evident on his body, a senior Egyptian prosecutor said.
This appears to contradict the findings of a senior Egyptian investigator who has been quoted ruling out foul play in relation to the death, suggesting instead he may have been involved in a road accident.
Regeni disappeared on January 25, 2016, the date of the fifth anniversary of the uprising which ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule.
Italian media reports the student was collaborating with workers’ movements and independent trade unions in Cairo and had contacts with the Egyptian opposition. He is said to have been sending articles under a pseudonym to Italy’s self-styled Communist newspaper Il Manifesto. An Italian journalist told the press Regeni had been afraid to sign his real name.
Italian authorities are reported to be pushing for his remains to be returned to Italy as soon as possible.
The Egyptian ambassador has been summoned to Italy’s foreign ministry in Rome. It says it expects “maximum collaboration at all levels, in light of the exceptional gravity of what happened.”

These songs by Egypt were initially released as a self titled demo and have since been reissued and remastered a few different times since the band's demise in 2005, which in itself says a thing or two about how good these songs are. This is a perfect mix of spacey minimalism and powerful angst and is all tied together with a satisfying, heavy, non-stop groove. To me it always conjures up desert i

LOVED BY A KING. HATED BY AN EMPIRE. ERASED FROM HISTORY. SHE COULD BE THE BIGGEST FIND SINCE KING TUT. Has the famed Egyptian beauty, Queen Nefertiti, been found in a secret chamber deep in the Valley of the Kings? A Discovery Channel Quest expedition, led by Dr. Joann Fletcher and a team of internationally renown scientists from the University of York Mummy research Team, hopes to find out. If they're right, the finding will be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries since Nefertiti's stepson - King Tutankhamen - was discovered in 1922. "Great Royal Wife" of the "renegade" pharaoh Akhenaten, Nefertiti was a mother of six who helped lead a religious revolution that changed Egypt and the world forever. Yet after her death, her enemies destroyed all evidence of Nefertiti's life. Now, drawing on 13 years of research, Fletcher and her team bring Nefertiti's turbulent reign to life as never before using cutting-edge computer animations to recreate ancient Egypt's great temples; x-rays to reveal the telltale signs of foul play on her mummy; and forensic graphics to recreate the mummy's face. Have they found the ancient world's greatest beauty?

Unknown Man 'E': The Most Mysterious Mummy in the World (Ancient Egypt History Documentary)
The Screaming Man Over 100 years ago an unidentified mummy was found lying alongside some of the most famous pharaohs in Egyptian history but his face is locked in an eternal scream. What caused this mans haunting expression? Why wasn't he mummified according to custom? The Screaming Man, also known as "Unknown Man E," was discovered in 1881. He was buried near the Valley of the Kings alongside members of Egyptian royalty. Unknown Man E was found covered in a quicklime paste, unheard of in the Egyptian tradition, wrapped in a sheepskin -- an object considered unclean for ancient Egyptians - and bound at the wrist and ankle. The ancient Egyptians' process of mummification was carried out according to clearly defined routines and religious principles, in order to prepare the body for the next world. Chemicals were used to dry the body out, a process which could last as long as 40 days. Then the body was coated with oils, painted with melted resins, and finally wrapped tightly in linen. Unknown Man E was mummified but denied any of the protective magic which would allow him to reach the next world, and some scholars believe that this, together with the animal skin found on the mummy, may indicate an intentional attempt to damn this man. The transition to the afterlife was so perilous that the ancient Egyptians tried to equip themselves with as much magical protection as possible. The markings of the tomb walls were intended to assist or protect the deceased on his journey to the next world, and they were buried with The Book of the Dead, a collection of spells or magic formulas. Some believe that Unknown Man E was a disgraced royal prince, son of Ramses III, the last great pharaoh of the New Kingdom.

Specifické podmínky nilského údolí a pravidelných nilských záplav umožnily v kontrastu s omezenými možnostmi tehdejší Sahary velice brzy přeměnit okraje záplavové oblasti na vysoce výnosnou zemědělskou půdu, a to pouhými jednoduchými úpravami přirozeného prostředí.

Immortal Egypt with Joann Fletcher -
1. The Road to the Pyramids
In the first episode, Professor Joann Fletcher goes in search of the building blocks of Egyptian civilisation and finds out what made ancient Egypt the incredible civilisation that it was.
Joann sees how people here changed, in just a few centuries, from primitive farmers to pyramid builders and finds the early evidence for Egypt's amazing gods and obsession with death and the afterlife.
On her search, Joann travels almost 20,000 years back in time to discover north Africa's earliest rock art, she discovers how the first writing was used to calculate taxes and explores one of the first stone structures on earth - Egypt's first pyramid. Joann ends her journey in the largest monument of them all - the Great Pyramid. Here, she explains how Egypt had now reached a pinnacle - the ultimate society, creating one of the wonders of the ancient world.

To me it always conjures up desert images - sun shining, sand blowing around, clear sky.
Its laid back stoner jams convey the arid desert of the Sahara. Sabbath dutifully rears its head amongst the influences, but not to the point where you're hearing duplicate riffs exported from the '70's. There's also a more straightforward Hawkwind and classic Deep Purple style to the album, as if Geezer had replaced Lemmy and the whole gang went on a shrooms bender, meeting up with Richie Blackmore later on for a couple of pints. Obviously, this is good stuff, and worth seeking out if you're looking for something to jumpstart your love of good ol' heavy bluesy doom rock.
One of the greatest EP's ever made. This is 4 amazing psychedelic jams from North Dakota's best Doom band Egypt. Enjoy!
1. Valley of the Kings - 0:00
2. Queen of All Time (Red Giant) - 7:45
3. Dirty Witch - 17:08
4. Touch Ground - 24:30

ANCIENT EGYPT'S Advanced Engineering and Architectural Structures - Documentary Films
Ancient Egypt was a civilization of old Northeastern Africa, focused along the lower reaches of the Nile River in exactly what is now the modern country of Egypt. It is just one of 6 civilizations globally to arise independently. Egyptian civilization coalesced around 3150 BC with the political unifications of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh.
The history of ancient Egypt happened in a series of stable Kingdoms, separated by durations of relative instability recognized as Intermediate Periods: the Old Kingdom of the Early Bronze Age, the Middle Kingdom of the Middle Bronze Age and the New Kingdom of the Late Bronze Age.
Egypt reached the peak of its power during the New Kingdom, in the Ramesside period where it equaled the Hittite Empire, Assyrian Empire and Mitanni Empire, after which it got in a moment of slow decrease.
