STORYLINE
Egyptian security officials said on Sunday that the Cairo offices of one of country's oldest liberal parties was attached by hundreds of ultraconservative Islamists.
Saturday's attack on the Wafd party offices comes as millions of Egyptians voted on a highly contentious draft constitution which split the country and sparked weeks of violence and street protests.
A security official said some 400 Islamist followers of ultraconservative lawyer-turned-cleric Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail, stormed the headquarters in Cairo's twin city of Giza, and smashed doors and windows.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press.
Witnesses say the mob set off fireworks and Molotov cocktails.
"The President, if he is President of all Egyptians, holds the responsibility of what has happened now and I ask the Attorney-General to submit the criminals who attacked us to justice," El-Sayed Badawi, the leader of the Wafd party told reporters at a news conference, after the incident.
Wafd is part of a broad opposition coalition which protested Morsi's latest moves and has campaigned against the draft constitution.
Saturday's voting capped a nearly two-year struggle over the post-Mubarak identity of Egypt, with the latest crisis over the charter evolving into a dispute over whether Egypt should move toward a religious state under President Mohammed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and their ultraconservative Salafi allies, or one that retains secular traditions and an Islamic character.
Some 120,000 army troops were deployed to help the police protect polling stations and state institutions after clashes between Morsi's supporters and opponents over the past three weeks left at least 10 people dead and about 1,000 wounded.

Wafd Party
The Wafd Party ("Delegation Party"; Arabic: حزب الوفد, Hizb al-Wafd) was a nationalist liberal political party in Egypt. It was said to be Egypt's most popular and influential political party for a period from the end of World War I through the 1930s. During this time, it was instrumental in the development of the 1923 constitution, and supported moving Egypt from dynastic rule to a constitutional monarchy, where power would be wielded by a nationally-elected parliament. The party was dissolved in 1952, after the 1952 Egyptian Revolution.
History
Rise
The Wafd party was an Egyptian nationalist movement that came into existence in the aftermath of World War I. Though it was not the first nationalist group in Egypt, it had the longest lasting impact. It was preceded and influenced by smaller and less significant movements which evolved over time into the more modern and stronger nationalist Wafd Party. One of these earlier movements was the Urabi Revolt led by Ahmed Orabi in the early 1880s. This uprising was fought against the ruling powers of the Egyptian Khedive and European interference with Egyptian affairs. Saad Zaghloul, the future creator and leader of the Wafd Party, was a follower of Orabi, and participated in his revolution.

Egypt's main opposition coalition announced on Tuesday that it will boycott upcoming parliamentary elections, a decision likely to deepen the nation's political crisis and worsen an already troubled economy.
The announcement by the liberal and secular National Salvation Front was announced in a televised news conference just hours ahead of the start of a "national dialogue" called for by President Mohammed Morsi to find ways to ensure the "transparency" and "integrity" of the vote.
Sameh Ashour, a leading member of the National Salvation Front and head of the Lawyers' Union of Egypt, announced the decision at a news conference and said the front was also boycotting Tuesday's dialogue.
"We tell Morsi: 'Dialogue with yourself. Dialogue with your party'," he said.
Called by Morsi last weekend, the elections will start in April and will be staggered over a two-month period.
Egypt's last legislature was elected in late 2011 and early 2012 but was dissolved by a court ruling in June, leaving the then-ruling military with legislative powers.
Morsi took over those powers in August, then passed them on to the Islamist-dominated upper chamber known as the Shura Council in December
The opposition has been calling on Morsi to defuse the nation's political crisis before calling for elections to prevent the country from plunging deeper into chaos.

Competing factions fighting over the leadership of an Egyptian political party clashed Saturday injuring 23 and setting party headquarters ablaze, police said.
With a siege at the headquarters still ongoing, prosecutors ordered the arrest of one of the contenders for the Wafd party leadership, Noaman Gomaa, blaming him for the violence, state news agency MENA reported.
The clashes began after Gomaa and his supporters took control of the party headquarters in a Cairo residential area and a rival faction tried to enter the building.
Gomaa's faction opened fire on the supporters of Mustapha el-Tawil. They responded by throwing stones, police said.
A fire broke out in the building, but was later brought under control.
There were reports of one person killed, but police said they were still seeking confirmation.
Witnesses said police outside the building stood by without trying to halt the violence.
Some 700 of el-Tawil's supporters broke into the building and surrounded an office where Gomaa had taken refuge with several of his supporters.
The leadership dispute began after 71 year-old Gomaa came third in Egypt's presidential elections in September with a worse-than-expected showing. That prompted some members to try to replace him.
His opponents, led by el-Tawil and Mahmoud Abaza, lost a legal bid Thursday to win a court order banning Gomaa from the headquarters.
