The Syrian military has recently started using new types of air and ground weapons supplied by Russia, a Syrian military source told Reuters on Thursday, underlining growing Russian support for Damascus that is alarming the United States. “Russia is supporting the Syrian government and is ready to offer everything possible to combat terrorism when it becomes necessary,” al-Moallem said. He said Syria will not hesitate to ask for Russia’s help in future if it is needed. His comments were the first by a senior Syrian official on Moscow’s military moves in Syria. He did not elaborate. Why is Russia sending troops to Syria? The United States "remains open to tactical, practical discussions" with Russia over the fight against Islamic State in Syria, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a briefing. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, speaking in an interview with Syrian TV Thursday evening, said no Russian combat troops were fighting in Syria. Russia says the plane did not violate Turkish airspace. The two pilots of the Russian jet ejected out of the targeted jet as it was going down in flames. While one of the Russian pilots was killed by militants in Syria, no information was available on the second. This information is still being updated in mainstream media, but the pilot was picked up by the Syrian army after he ejected. The Syrian army also rescued the rescue helicopter that went searching for the pilots, that itself came under rebel fire. The helicopter had 12 original crew on board. MADAYA / SYRIA — Less than an hour's drive from Damascus, Syria is the mountain town of of Madaya where at least 23 people have died from starvation and hundreds more suffer from malnutrition. Local residents say their town has been under siege by members of Bashar al-Assad's regime for several months. Madaya's 40,000 residents have resorted to eating leaves and grass to survive. With rice prices at more than $100 per pound, it's not surprising to hear some families have resorted to eating their pets. The story has drawn further attention to this graffiti tag, first spotted in 2014, which reads, "Submit or starve," signed by Assad's soldiers. Demonstrators in Madaya have taken to the streets to protest the siege of their city. The BBC reports that the Syrian government has agreed to let the UN deliver aid to some 400,000 people in 15 besieged areas. The Bekaa Valley, which serves as the main passageway between Damascus and Beirut, is now home to the largest concentration of Lebanon’s Syrian refugees. Currently in Lebanon there is one Syrian for every four Lebanese citizens — a population growth that has created a strain on the small villages and towns that bear the responsibility of hosting the refugees. Syrian rebels led by Al-Nusra and the Islamic Front captured the city of Idlib after 4 days of intense fighting. This was confirmed by several pro rebel sources and western media. Also the Syrian news agency SANNA admited the defeat but said the Syrian Army is actuall regrouping on the southern outskirts of the town and preparing a counter offensive to retake Idlib back from the rebels. Idlib is the capital of the northern province of Idlib, and it became only the second provincial capital in the country to fall to the rebels since the northeastern city of Raqqa was captured by IS two years ago. The government appeared to have made scant effort to defend the city wich resulted in a quick victory for rebel fighters. It is most likely that the city now will face daily shelling and air raids by the Syrian Air Force in order to target the rebels inside. The civilian population mostly already left the city as the footage shows. This footage is mostly filmed by Al-Nusra members but also a small amount of Syrian Army footage from fighting inside the town is featured in the video. Russia's airstrikes on Syria struggle to spur progress on the ground. When Russia launched an air campaign to support Bashar al-Assad, it was banking on a ground force of Syrian troops to finish what its warplanes started. Damage from airstrikes is intensifying. Russian long-range warplanes drop 1,500 bombs on ISIS targets in Syria. Russian long-range warplanes have carried out 145 sorties against Islamic State targets since joining the country’s anti-terror campaign in Syria in mid-November. “In total, long-range aviation aircraft in Syria have carried out around 145 mission sorties, some 1,500 bombs have been dropped and about 20 cruise missiles have been fired," Gen. Anatoly Konovalov, deputy commander of Russia’s long-range aviation force, told Ekho Moskvy radio station. The crews of Tu-22 (Blinder) and Tu-160 (Blackjack) strategic bombers took off from airfields in Russia and spent 16 hours in the air to fulfill their combat tasks in Syria, he added. Previously, sorties in Syria were carried out exclusively by Sukhoi warplanes, including the cutting-edge Su-34 as well as the tried-and-tested Su-25 and Su-24M aircraft. Russia has been conducting dozens of combat flights against Islamic State and other terrorist targets in in the country on a daily basis since September 30 after an official request by President Bashar Assad. Russia delivers up to 40 airstrikes daily to help Free Syrian Army fight terrorists - General Staff. Warplanes of the Russian task force in Syria deliver 30 to 40 airstrikes daily in support of the Free Syrian Army, the General Staff reports. Some 5,000 FSA troops together with the Syrian Army are on the offensive in Hama, Homs, Aleppo and Raqqa provinces. The number of FSA personnel who have come over to the Syrian Army is constantly growing, Russia’s Defense Force Chief of Staff, Army General Valery Gerasimov, said. No US airstrikes in Syria since Russia deployed S-400 systems. Both the American and Turkish air forces halted their strikes on Syrian territory around the time Russia deployed S-400 air defense complexes at the Khmeimim airbase, from which it stages its own incursions against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).The S-400’s radar has a range of 600 kilometers and is capable of discriminating even objects moving on the ground, such as cars and military vehicles. S-400 radar covers Syria, western regions of Iraq and Saudi Arabia, nearly all of Israel and Jordan Egypt’s northern Sinai, a large part of the eastern Mediterranean and Turkish airspace as far as the capital Ankara.
