The head of the African Union (AU) arrived in Burkina Faso on Monday for talks with the country's interim leader, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, on finding a solution to the political crisis there, after opposition protests forced President Blaise Compaore to resign last week after 27 years in power. AU chief Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is also president of Mauritania, held talks with Zida in the capital, Ouagadougou. At a news conference afterwards, Abdel Aziz said that the AU's role would be one of support for Burkina Faso. "We (the African Union) are not here to impose sanctions but to help our Burkinabe brothers find the solutions for themselves and these solutions will ultimately be decided by the Burkina people," he said. Opposition leaders and members of civil society had continued meetings over the weekend in Ouagadougou to decide the composition of a transitional government, after the military stepped into the void formed by the ousting of Compaore. International envoys are pressing the West African country to quickly designate a civilian leader for a transitional period until new elections can be held. Sunon to venture in coal power production From the Events' desk, we take a close look at the 2nd Annual Africa Hotel Expansion Summit 2015 We begin with news about Gigawatt global is targeting to spend about US$2billion to help Africa generate 1000Mw of solar power by 2020. Dutch company Gigawatt has said the 1000MW power plant construction project will have its roots in East Africa where the largest photovoltaic field will be built in Rwanda. Burundi is one of the countries that could also benefit when this facility is expanded. The photovoltaic field solar power plant construction and installation will help to serve electricity to 11 million people in Rwanda. It will cost $23.7-million and generate 8.5 MW according to Yosef Abramowitz, Gigawatt’s president. Kenya: Nairobi-Mombasa petroleum pipeline set for rehabilitation: The 450km Nairobi-Mombasa petroleum pipeline, which was built in 1976, is set for rehabilitation after an audit revealed immense shortcomings that are compromising safety and performance. The aging pipeline has in the past, experienced raptures, hence compromising on reliability of movement of petroleum products from Mombasa to Nairobi. KPC is seeking a contractor to carry out major repair works on the pipeline. The audit reveals that, other than raptures, the 14-inch petroleum pipeline is experiencing massive corrosion in some sections, which has been causing partial blockages and weakening seams on the pipeline. Mauritania signs a deal for seven solar power projects: Mauritanian government has signed a deal with Masdar for the production of more solar energy from seven photovoltaic projects. The solar power construction and installation projects will generate a total capacity of 12 Megawatts and are set to be completed in the first quarter of 2016, with each plant expected to produce 30% electricity demand of its host town. The partnership is between Mauritanian ministry of petroleum, Energy and mines and the United Arab Emirates Company. According to Masdrar, the solar power project will provide clean and reliable energy to most towns in the country and save the country of 6 million liters of diesel consumed per year and 16,134 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Once complete, the solar power construction and installation project will provide sustainable energy solutions, job opportunities and economic growth in Mauritania. Italy and Algeria to partner in the GALSI gas pipeline project. Italy has agreed to continue with the US$2.5 billion GALSI gas pipeline construction project, which will allow Algeria to supply gas to northern Italy and Europe through a pipeline connection. The new partnership was agreed by the Algerian Minister of Foreign affairs Ramatane Lamamra and Italy’s Paolo Gentiloni during a working visit to Algeria. GALSI will transmit 8 billion cubic metres per year and Algeria owns 41.6% of the project. Approximately 565KM of the pipeline will be offshore across the Mediterranean sea and 272km onshore. Ghana: Sunon to venture into coal power production: Sunon Asogli Power Plant in Ghana is set to start using coal to generate power, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Togbe Afede XIV has revealed. According to him, the current power demand in the country requires other means of generation to eradicate deficit. He said feasibility studies on the coal power plant construction and installation project were underway – expected to be 700MW in the first phase. He also confirmed that plans to ensure generation of 1,200MW in Phase II were underway. 2nd Annual Africa Hotel Expansion Summit 2015: Africa is a continent with major untapped potential. Now, favourable demographics and economic growth are attracting new foreign investments and this presents many opportunities for hotel developers and operators. Consequently, numerous hotel chains have announced ambitious expansion plans for the coming years and every month new developments and projects are published. The past five years, the Sub-Saharan region saw a growth of over 84% in the number of hotel deals signed and at the beginning of 2014, over 40, 000 rooms were in the development pipeline.
