The Caliph (Arabic: خليفة ḫalīfah/khalīfah) is the head of state in a Caliphate, and the title for the ruler of the Islamic Ummah, an Islamic community ruled by the Shari'ah. It is a transcribed version of the Arabic word 
خليفة Khalīfah (help·info) which means "successor" or "representative". Following Muhammad's death in 632, the early leaders of the Muslim nation were called "Khalifat Rasul Allah", the political successors to the messenger of God (referring to Muhammad). Some academics prefer to transliterate the term as Khalīfah.
In his book The Early Islamic Conquests (1981), Fred Donner argues that the standard Arabian practice at the time was for the prominent men of a kinship group, or tribe, to gather after a leader's death and elect a leader from amongst themselves. There was no specified procedure for this shura or consultation. Candidates were usually, but not necessarily, from the same lineage as the deceased leader. Capable men who would lead well were preferred over an ineffectual heir.

Sakurah requests a ship and crew to return to Colossa but the Caliph refuses to jeopardize his countrymen. However, the treacherous magician shrinks the princess and when the desperate Sinbad seeks him out, he tells that he needs to return to Colossa to get the ingredient necessary for the magic potion. But Sinbad has only his friend Harufa to travel with him, and he decides to enlist a doubtful crew in the prison of Baghdad, in the beginning of his dangerous voyage to Colossa to save the princess and avoid the eminent war between Chandra and Baghdad.

The formation of the Caliphate was not an easy one and the newly elected Caliph faced a secessionist rebellion throughout Arabia. He overcame the rebellion but his reign lasted only for two years, but before Abu Bakr’s death, he nominated his trusted military advisor Umar as a candidate for the Caliph. The Ummah and the council of elders were stunned because Abu Bakr and Umar could not be more different. Abu Bakr was the wise and modest grandfather type. He dressed simple and he lived simply. He accumulated no wealth and made every decision together with a council of elders. As the Caliph he received only a very small salary; in fact, Abu Bakr continued his trading business just to get by. Sometimes he even milked the cows of the neighbors for extra cash. For all his modesty and humility he was greatly respected. Umar, on the other hand, before his conversion to Islam was known as a brawler and a drinker. He had a notorious temper and was much taller than the people around him. So the council wasn’t convinced that Umar was the right person for the office. Then, in the heat of the debate, Ali stepped forward and endorsed Umar. This tipped the scale of the debate and Umar was elected as the new Caliph. Over the next ten years, Umar would lead the Caliphate. He would conquer the lands of Persia, Mesopotamia, the Levant and Egypt. And he would give Islamic civilization its own unique identity. Umar was a theologian as influential as Saint Paul, and he was a statesman and a patron of philosophy much like Lorenzo de' Medici. But Umar was also a social reformer like Karl Marx, and a military thinker equal to Napoleon. Any of these achievements would have earned him a place in history, but when most people speak of Umar, all they know is that he was the second Caliph. In the first part of the History of Islam, we discussed the succession to Muhammad and the birth of the Caliphate under the leadership of Abu Bakr. The formation of the Caliphate was not an easy one and the newly elected Caliph faced a secessionist rebellion throughout Arabia. He overcame the rebellion but his reign lasted only for two years, but before Abu Bakr’s death, he nominated his trusted military advisor Umar as a candidate for the Caliph.
The Ummah and the council of elders were stunned because Abu Bakr and Umar could not be more different. Abu Bakr was the wise and modest grandfather type. He dressed simple and he lived simply. He accumulated no wealth and made every decision together with a council of elders. As the Caliph he received only a very small salary; in fact, Abu Bakr continued his trading business just to get by. Sometimes he even milked the cows of the neighbors for extra cash. For all his modesty and humility he was greatly respected. Umar, on the other hand, before his conversion to Islam was known as a brawler and a drinker. He had a notorious temper and was much taller than the people around him. So the council wasn’t convinced that Umar was the right person for the office. Then, in the heat of the debate, Ali stepped forward and endorsed Umar. This tipped the scale of the debate and Umar was elected as the new Caliph.
Over the next ten years, Umar would lead the Caliphate. He would conquer the lands of Persia, Mesopotamia, the Levant and Egypt. And he would give Islamic civilization its own unique identity. Umar was a theologian as influential as Saint Paul, and he was a statesman and a patron of philosophy much like Lorenzo de' Medici. But Umar was also a social reformer like Karl Marx, and a military thinker equal to Napoleon. Any of these achievements would have earned him a place in history, but when most people speak of Umar, all they know is that he was the second Caliph.

(rahimahullah), Shaikh Khaalid al-Anbari, Shaikh Fasial al-Jaasim and many others. Currently Abu Imran is the director of the Al-Burhaan Institute based in Leicester U.K which offers regular beneficial classes throughout the week.
