Kedah (also known by its honorific, Darul Aman, or "Abode of Peace"[citation needed]) is a state of Malaysia, located in the northwestern part of Peninsular Malaysia. The state covers a total area of over 9,000 km², and it consists of the mainland and Langkawi. The mainland has a relatively flat terrain, which is used to grow rice. Langkawi is an archipelago of islands, most of which are uninhabited. Kedah was called Saiburi (Thai: ไทรบุรี) by the Siamese when it was under their influence.
Kedah borders the state of Perlis and shares an international boundary with the Songkhla and Yala provinces of Thailand to the north. It also borders the state of Perak to the south and Penang to the southwest.
The state's capital is Alor Setar and the royal seat is in Anak Bukit. Other major towns include Sungai Petani, and Kulim on the mainland, and Kuah on Langkawi.
Archaeological evidence found in Bujang Valley reveals that a Hindu–Buddhist kingdom ruled ancient Kedah possibly as early as 110 A.D. The discovery of temples, jetty remains, iron smelting sites, and clay brick monuments dating back to 110 A.D shows that a maritime trading route with south Indian Tamil kingdoms was already established since that time. The discoveries in Bujang Valley also made the ancient Kedah as the oldest civilization of Southeast Asia.

Malaysia Cup Final 2007/2008 -- August 23, 2008. Nasional Stadium, Bukit Jalil. KEDAH CIPTA SEJARAH Kedah membuktikan kejaguhan mereka sebagai gergasi bola sepak negara selepas membenam Selangor 3-2 pada perlawanan akhir Piala Malaysia edisi ke-82 di Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil. Kejayaan itu sekali gus menjulang Kedah untuk terus mempertahankan koleksi tiga gelaran iaitu juara liga, Piala FA dan Piala Malaysia. Kejayaan yang dicapai oleh Kedah itu akan terpahat sebagai sejarah dalam kancah bola sepak tempatan selepas mencipta nama menjulang gelaran treble untuk dua musim berturut-turut. Di samping itu, ia merupakan kali keempat Kedah menjulang Piala Malaysia selepas melakukannya pada 1990, 1993 dan 2007. Lebih manis, kejayaan Kedah itu dicipta di depan Sultan Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah dan disaksikan oleh kira-kira 60 000 penonton, dimana penyokong Kedah lebih mendominasi dengan kehadiran seramai 40 000 orang berbanding Selangor yang dianggarkan 20 000 orang. Kejayaan gemilang ini juga sebagai hadiah perpisahan paling bermakna buat Marlon, Nelson dan Huggins ekoran larangan terhadap pemain import mulai musim depan. Marlon dan Nelson menjaringkan dua gol Kedah dalam tempoh dua minit, minit ke-31 dan ke-32 disusuli Fadly pada minit ke-37. Gol Selangor dijaringankan menerusi Frank Seator, minit ke-18 dan Safee Sali minit ke-77. Nelson San Martin dipilih sebagai pemain terbaik perlawanan akhir. Kedah membuktikan kejaguhan mereka sebagai gergasi bola sepak negara selepas membenam Selangor 3-2 pada perlawanan akhir Piala Malaysia edisi ke-82 di Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil. Kejayaan itu sekali gus menjulang Kedah untuk terus mempertahankan koleksi tiga gelaran iaitu juara liga, Piala FA dan Piala Malaysia. Kejayaan yang dicapai oleh Kedah itu akan terpahat sebagai sejarah dalam kancah bola sepak tempatan selepas mencipta nama menjulang gelaran treble untuk dua musim berturut-turut. Di samping itu, ia merupakan kali keempat Kedah menjulang Piala Malaysia selepas melakukannya pada 1990, 1993 dan 2007. Lebih manis, kejayaan Kedah itu dicipta di depan Sultan Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah dan disaksikan oleh kira-kira 60 000 penonton, dimana penyokong Kedah lebih mendominasi dengan kehadiran seramai 40 000 orang berbanding Selangor yang dianggarkan 20 000 orang. Kejayaan gemilang ini juga sebagai hadiah perpisahan paling bermakna buat Marlon, Nelson dan Huggins ekoran larangan terhadap pemain import mulai musim depan. Marlon dan Nelson menjaringkan dua gol Kedah dalam tempoh dua minit, minit ke-31 dan ke-32 disusuli Fadly pada minit ke-37. Gol Selangor dijaringankan menerusi Frank Seator, minit ke-18 dan Safee Sali minit ke-77. Nelson San Martin dipilih sebagai pemain terbaik perlawanan akhir.

A hidden gem of the northern state in Malaysia.
Tanjung Dawai is dubbed as a quiet fishermen's village. Located about 45 minutes from the main city of Sungai Petani, it is a must go destination if you have already in the Lembah Bujang Archeological Site in Kedah.
Driving from Kuala Lumpur to Sungai Petani on the North-South Expressway will be about 4 1/2 hours (exit Sungai Petani Utara).

Off the coast of Kedah is a cluster of 99 islands offering the best of many worlds: beautiful beaches, world- class infrastructure, mangroves rich in flora and fauna, ultra- cheap duty-free shopping and fascinating legends.
Langkawi has a lingering legend woven into its history. Ask anyone on the island about the tragic story of a beautiful young lady named Mahsuri, and you'll hear a tale of love, jealousy and a curse that was placed upon the island by her for seven generations.
Today, the seventh generation of Langkawi's inhabitants has long come and gone, but people here still believe that the prosperity and blessings the islands enjoy today and the passing of the curse is no mere coincidence. The mysticism of this legend can be felt in many parts of this island, especially at Makam Mahsuri Mahsuri's Mausoleum, where Mahsuri is said to be buried.
Despite what looks like a slant towards tourism, many of the islanders are actually farmers, fishermen and entrepreneurs. Experience the beautiful countryside and peaceful landscape of paddy fields by renting a car and taking a leisurely drive around the island. Some of Langkawi's most rustic and memorable views are along the road that circles the island.
You'll pass small villages with wooden houses framed by palm trees, and children pedalling their old bicycles on errands. Aside from experiencing the local lifestyle, there is no shortage of things to do in Langkawi. Head up the thrilling new cable car to the summit of Mount Mat Cincang - Langkawi's second highest mountain - for an unrivalled view of the entire main island and beyond.

The mysticism of this legend can be felt in many parts of this island, especially at Makam Mahsuri Mahsuri's Mausoleum, where Mahsuri is said to be buried.
Despite what looks like a slant towards tourism, many of the islanders are actually farmers, fishermen and entrepreneurs. Experience the beautiful countryside and peaceful landscape of paddy fields by renting a car and taking a leisurely drive around the island. Some of Langkawi's most rustic and memorable views are along the road that circles the island.
You'll pass small villages with wooden houses framed by palm trees, and children pedalling their old bicycles on errands. Aside from experiencing the local lifestyle, there is no shortage of things to do in Langkawi. Head up the thrilling new cable car to the summit of Mount Mat Cincang - Langkawi's second highest mountain - for an unrivalled view of the entire main island and beyond.
Other popular destinations are the Field of Burnt Rice, Hot Springs, Telaga Tujuh The Seven Wells and the Beach of Black Sand. Boat tours are organised to Tasik Dayang Bunting Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, Gua Cerita Cave of Stories and Gua Langsir Curtain Cave.
For a more intimate time with nature, go trekking through the pristine rainforest that covers most of Langkawi, or go on a boat tour of the mangroves.
