In which John Green teaches you about nation building and nationalism in Latin America. Sometimes, the nations of Latin America get compared to the nations of Europe, and are found wanting. This is kind of a silly comparison. The rise of democratic, economically powerful nations in Europe came about under a very different set of circumstances than the way nations arose in Latin America, so the regions are necessarily a lot different. But why? John will explore whether it was a lack of international war which impeded Latin America's growth, which sounds like a crazy thing to say, but you should hear him out.

In which John Green talks about the many revolutions of Latin America in the 19th century. At the beginning of the 1800s, Latin America was firmly under the control of Spain and Portugal. The revolutionary zeal that had recently created the United States and had taken off Louis XVI's head in France arrived in South America, and a racially diverse group of people who felt more South American than European took over. John covers the soft revolution of Brazil, in which Prince Pedro boldly seized power from his father, but promised to give it back if King João ever returned to Brazil. He also covers the decidedly more violent revolutions in Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina. Watch the video to see Simón Bolívar's dream of a United South America crushed, even as he manages to liberate a bunch of countries and get two currencies and about a thousand schools and parks named after him.

Chris Spannos speaks with the acclaimed public intellectual about the shift in US policy toward Cuba and what it signals.
In his speech to the United Nations General Assembly on 28 September 2015, US President Barack Obama said that ‘for 50 years, the United States pursued a Cuba policy that failed to improve the lives of the Cuban people’, and proclaimed: ‘We changed that.’ His speech comes after much news signalling a thaw in relations rooted in the Cold-War era.
But does the US foreign policy shift in relations toward Cuba indicate a change in regional goals, or does it signal new strategy to advance the same old objectives? Internationally acclaimed public intellectual and linguist Noam Chomsky answers the big questions about US relations with Latin America.
In this episode of Amygdala, New Internationalist Digital Editor Chris Spannos speaks with Chomsky about Economic War on Latin America. From his Boston office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, Chomsky discusses the historic fear that the superpower has had toward an independent Latin America. The interview looks at the past US blockade on Cuba and recent changes in US diplomacy toward the small island nation, the history of US foreign policy toward the region, Brazil as an economic power-house and Latin America’s efforts at regional integration.
This episode of Amygdala was produced for New Internationalist. Website: newint.org

In this game there were three players on the other team that were working together. The two that seemed to be caring about their score were in chat, together; but, the third guy who I believe had the lag-switch DID belong to their clan and WAS also in Latin America. In this clip you see what happens to me whenever I got close to his position. His very presence in the game allowed his partners to really benefit from what was going on. I'd guess that ESoLoCLARK has another account that he uses when it's not *his turn* to be the lag-switcher with his friends. Just seems odd they wouldn't all be in chat together and yet clearly by their names/emblems they were in the same clan. In 2000+ games of TDM in Black Ops 3 I've only come across this level of highly sophisticated cheating a half-dozen times. Usually, the culprits will use knives only or shotguns and often use the Spectre ability for it's slashing special -- all things you can get away with using if you're lag-switching.

Competencia internacional Festival de Viña del Mar 2016 Australia, Allison Elgueta, tema “Move on” The Viña del Mar International Song Festival (Spanish: Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar) is a music festival that is considered the best and biggest in Latin America and the most important musical event in the Americas which is held annually on the 3rd week of February since 1960 in Viña del Mar, Chile. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIMYIk4eqPE
Every year invited artists such as Tom Jones, Sting, Backstreet Boys, Jonas Brothers, Elton John, Cat Stevens perform alongside Latin artists such as Soda Stereo, Lynda Thomas, Chayanne, Ricky Martin, Prince Royce, Marc Anthony, Gustavo Cerati, Carlos Santana and Thalía, also have competitions where the winners win fame and a prize, the best known case of this is Shakira, who was in 3rd position. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vi%C3%B1a_del_Mar_International_Song_Festival

In the last decade, Latin America has undergone a series of historic transformations. Major political shifts, unprecedented economic growth, and political leaders challenging US influence and championing regional autonomy, have combined to reshape an emerging new continent.
With ideologies and policies as varying as Venezuela's Bolivarian socialism, Colombia's economic liberalism and the centrism of Brazil and Argentina being exercised throughout the region, Empire examines the geopolitical shifts across Latin America and asks what challenges may yet lie ahead.
Joining us to analyse and uncover some of these issues are: Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the former president of Brazil; Otto Perez Molina, the president of Guatemala; Cesar Gaviria, the former president of Colombia; and Jeremy McDermott, the co-founder of the South American organised crime research institute, InSight Crime.
We also discuss the future of Latin America and its relationship with the US with our guests: Professor Arlene Beth Tickner from Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, who is the editor of a number of books including Thinking International Relations Differently (Worlding Beyond the West); Professor Michael Hardt from Duke University, who is the author of several books including co-authored works Empire and Multitude: War and Democracy in the Age of Empire; and Greg Grandin, a professor of history at New York University and author of Empire's Workshop: Latin America, the US and the Rise of the New Imperialism.
