According to the 2010 census, the number of American Hispanics grew 43% in the last decade to over 50 million. By 2050, Hispanics are projected to number 132 million and represent 30% of the population. As that population evolves, so does their political power. A new report by the Pew Hispanic Center shows that since 2008, America's Latino voting population has grown 22% since 2008. But what are the cultural and political implications of these now well-understood statistics?
Bill goes beyond the numbers with two of our nation's most popular and influential journalists: Univision's Jorge Ramos and María Elena Salinas. A Spanish-language U.S. television network, Univision has the largest audience of Spanish-language television viewers, according to Nielsen ratings.
Ramos, says The Washington Monthly, is "the broadcaster who will most determine the 2012 elections," while The New York Times calls Salinas "the voice of Hispanic America." In a candid and comprehensive discussion, Ramos and Salinas discuss their responsibilities both as reporters and representatives of their culture, their aggressive journalistic approaches to both President Obama and Governor Romney, and their strong takes on immigration issues that mean so much to a potentially-decisive voting bloc in 2012.
"We are changing the face of America. It's not black and white anymore. We're changing the way we eat. We're changing the way people dance, the way people speak. And we're changing the way people vote." Ramos tells Bill. "No one can make it the White House now without the Hispanic vote -- that's completely new."

In her new book, "Making Hispanics: How Activists, Bureaucrats, and Media Constructed a New America" (University of Chicago Press), UC Berkeley sociologist G. A Mexican American from Los Angeles, Mora completed her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley and her graduate work at Princeton University, before returning to UC Berkeley in 2011 as an assistant professor of sociology.

My summer vacation 2013 was in Hispanic America. My husband (Averiy Saltykov) was recording, i hope everyone like it. Me and my family leave part of our hearts in Hispanic America with their beautiful people and lands.
I was not been in all countries of Hispanic America, just three countries of that beautiful land and people but i wanted put almost all their flags in the end of my video.
Spasiba beautiful Latin Americans thanks for open your doors to this Russian family, we just had beautiful times. People, Food, Weather, Music, Cultures, Places all was a new and wonderful experience. The 12 hours 53 minutes way flight and 12 hours 55 minutes return flight was the hard part but the wonderful experience worth the long journey.
I found the song in Venezuela is called Pavo Real.

"Coming [to Cambodia] has actually been a journey for me being able to identify as Hispanic more than I think I had identified as Hispanic before." Danielle Carillo, Peace Corps Cambodia Volunteer
Peace Corps is proud to recognize September 15 through October 15, 2015, as National Hispanic Heritage Month at the Peace Corps. The national theme for this year’s observance is “Honoring Our Heritage. Building Our Future.”
Hispanic Heritage Month provides us with an opportunity to recognize the many valuable contributions that Hispanic Americans have made to our country and to the Peace Corps. They contribute to every walk of contemporary American life, while simultaneously preserving the unique customs and traditions of their ancestors.
Last year, over 660 Hispanics Americans served as Peace Corps Volunteers. These Volunteers fulfilled Peace Corps’ mission and goals by sharing their knowledge and skills abroad and helping to reflect the extraordinary diversity of the United States.
During this month, we celebrate the diversity of the Hispanic community and the service of our Hispanic Volunteers and RPCVs.

The Charlie Charlie game is a modern incarnation of a Spanish paper-and-pencil game. Like a Magic 8 Ball , the game is played by teenagers using school supplies to produce answers to questions they ask. Teenage girls have played Juego de la Lapicera generations in Spain and Hispanic America , asking which boys in their class fancy them. Originally described on the internet in 2008, the game was popularized in the English speaking word in 2015, partly through the hashtag #CharlieCharlieChallenge.
Hola!! Wassup? I'm Sinister Lantz, and today I show you my Charlie Charlie Challenge. I'm all alone in the house, so it's my chance while everyone is not around. I recorded this at midnight and sorry if my camera is dimly. To make my video more scary, I decided to light up a candle. That time, I was so creeped out because I'm alone and it's nighttime. Sorry if my English sucks. I'm born Hispanic, by the way.
Adiós, Amigos!!

A Casta was a hierarchical system of race classification created by Spanish elites in Hispanic America during the Spanish colonial period. The sistema de castas or the sociedad de castas, used in 17th and 18th centuries in Spanish America and Spanish Philippines to describe as a whole the mixed ancestry people which appeared in the post-Conquest period in the process known as mestizaje. A parallel system of categorization based on the degree of acculturation to Hispanic culture, which distinguished between gente de razón and gente sin razón, concurrently existed and worked together with the idea of casta.
The hierarchical system of race classification created by white elites, the sistema de castas or the sociedad de castas, was based on the principle that people varied according largely to their birth, color, race and origin of ethnic types. The system of castas was more than socio-racial classification. It had an impact on every aspect of life, including economics and taxation. Both the Spanish colonial state and the Church expected more tax and tribute payments from those of lower socio-racial categories. In Latin America, a person's socio-economic status generally correlated with race or racial mix in the known family background, or simply on phenotype if the family background was unknown. Many wealthy persons and high government officials were of peninsular background, while African or indigenous ancestry, or even just dark skin, generally correlated with poverty and inferiority. Therefore, the whiter the heritage a person could claim, the higher in status they could claim; conversely, darker features meant less opportunity.

This show takes a look at one of America's most feared Hispanic street gangs MS-13.
Mara Salvatrucha (commonly abbreviated as MS, Mara, and MS-13) is a transnational criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles and has spread to other parts of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. The majority of the gang is ethnically composed of Central Americans and active in urban and suburban areas. In the U.S., the MS-13 has an especially heavy presence in Los Angeles County and the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California; the Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas of Fairfax County, Virginia, Montgomery County, Maryland, and Prince George's County, Maryland; Long Island, New York; the Boston, Massachusetts area; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Houston, Texas. There is also a presence of MS-13 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Members of MS distinguish themselves by tattoos covering the body and also often the face, as well as the use of their own sign language. They are notorious for their use of violence and a subcultural moral code that predominantly consists of merciless revenge and cruel retributions. This cruelty of the distinguished members of the "Maras" or "Mareros" earned them a path to be recruited by the Sinaloa Cartel battling against Los Zetas in an ongoing drug war south of the United States border. Their wide-ranging activities have drawn the attention of the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who have initiated wide-scale raids against known and suspected gang members -- netting hundreds of arrests across the country.
History
The Mara Salvatrucha gang originated in Los Angeles, set up in the 1980s by Salvadoran immigrants in the city's Pico-Union neighborhood who immigrated to the United States after the Central American civil wars of the 1980s.
Originally, the gang's main purpose was to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other, more established gangs of Los Angeles, who were predominantly composed of Mexicans and African-Americans.
Many Mara Salvatrucha gang members from the Los Angeles area have been deported after being arrested. Namely, Jose Abrego, a high-ranking member, was deported four times. As a result of these deportations, members of MS have recruited more members in their home countries. The Los Angeles Times contends that deportation policies have contributed to the size and influence of the gang both in the United States and in Central America. According to the 2009 National Gang Threat Assessment, "The gang is estimated to have 30,000 to 50,000 members and associate members worldwide, 8,000 to 10,000 of whom reside in the United States."
In recent years the gang has expanded into the Washington, D.C. area; in particular the areas of Langley Park and Takoma Park, Maryland, near the Washington border, have become centers of MS gang activity.
In 2004, the US FBI started the MS-13 National Gang Task Force. The FBI also began teaming with law enforcement in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico.
In 2005, the office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement started Operation Community Shield. By 2011, this operation had made over 20,000 arrests, including more than 3,000 arrests of alleged MS-13 members.

When Teddy Roosevelt sent the USS Maine into Havana's harbor in 1898, he hoped that the show of force would help protect the lives and property of American citizens in the restless Spanish territory. But when the Maine mysteriously exploded and sank at anchor, the nation was shocked and demanded revenge. Ultimately, its destruction led to the Spanish-American War. But was the great ship really mined by Spanish forces, as newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst trumpeted in his tabloids? Journey back to the night of February 15, 1898 to unravel the enduring mystery. Examine the official navy report of the disaster which reached no conclusion and the tabloid accusations which made a frenzied but groundless case. Maritime experts and leading historians point to possible causes of the explosion which claimed 254 lives and examine its repercussions.

Axel Wenner-Gren, the Swedish tycoon, visionary, and philanthropist founded Electrolux and built it into one of the crown jewels of his global economic empire. However, his contributions remain largely unknown, particularly to the world of science.During January and February 1939, Wenner-Gren met President Manuel Prado of Peru and was introduced to a culture that captured his imagination, as evidenced by the subsequent expeditions he came to sponsor. The expedition's members discovered and explored several well-known sites along the Inca trail leading up to Machu Picchu. The area comprising the expedition's explorations was officially denominated the "Wenner-Gren National Park," the expedition's leaders were recognized with the highest academic honors for their contributions and the expedition's collections were presented to museums in Peru and the United States. Peruvian President Manuel Prado bestowed the "Order of the Sun" on Axel Wenner-Gren and Paul Fejos, respectively, the expedition's sponsor and its leader. Finally, the legacy of the expedition includes the creation of the Archeology department at Cuzco's Universidad de San Antonio Abad.
Ilja A. Luciak is a Professor in Political Science at the Virgina Tech University. His research interests include democratic theory and gender politics, revolutionary movements, reproductive rights, and globalization. For the past thirty years, Dr. Luciak has conducted field research in Central America, Cuba and Colombia focusing on gender equality and democratization. Recent publications include a multi-year study on Gender Equality and Democratization in Central America and Cuba and After the Revolution: Gender and Democracy in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001). He is currently completing a book manuscript, entitled The Electrolux King: Reality and Myth in the Life of Axel Wenner-Gren.

Jorge Ramos, a veteran of Spanish-language television news who now hosts a nightly show on the English-language network Fusion, spoke at Harvard in early March at the invitation of the Committee on Ethnicity, Migration, Rights. The Nieman Foundation for Journalism, the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, the Instituto Cervantes at Harvard (Observatorio), and the Harvard Latina/o Student Alliance co-sponsored the event. He shared his own experiences as a Mexican immigrant in the United States and spoke about why he believes journalists with press freedom have an obligation to ask tough questions of politicians. He also discussed how the strength of the Latino voting bloc will have a major impact on the future political campaigns of both parties.
