Controversy at London's 1908 Olympics
If you think controversy at the Olympics is a modern phenomena, the 1908 Games will make you think again. Rows over rules were rife, and the so-called 'British sense of fair play' was conspicuous by its absence.
But along with the scandal, 1908 produced a truly memorable marathon and set the standard for future Olympics.

It shows his wife Sofya picking flowers in the garden, his daughter Aleksandra sitting in the carriage in the white blouse, his aide and confidante, V. Chertkov, and students. It was filmed by Aleksandr Osipovich Drankov. We're not sure of all the details within the 2nd section, so any help would be greatly appreciated

At 7:17 AM on the morning of June 30, 1908, a mysterious explosion occurred in the skies over Siberia. It was caused by the impact and breakup of a large meteorite, at an altitude roughly six kilometers in the atmosphere. Realistic pictures of the event are unavailable. However, Russian scientists collected eyewitness accounts of the event. I believe that we now know enough about large impacts to "decode" the subjective descriptions of the witnesses and create realistic views of this historic asteroid impact as seen from different distances.

A specially compiled selection of extracts from surviving footage of Track & Field and Marathon events during London's first ever stint as host city.
The 1908 Olympics had been awarded to Rome, but due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in April 1906 London was selected as an alternative. Twenty-two nations competed in 110 events, opening on 27th April and closing on 31st October.
Track & Field events, held at the specially built White City stadium, were captured in the first part of this film, which illustrates the multitude of sports taking place simultaneously: archery, shot putt, high jump and discus alongside tug-of-war, gymnastics, swimming and water polo, with the cyclists sweeping past on the track in the background.
The 1908 Olympic marathon took place in sweltering heat, leading to one of the most dramatic race finishes in the history of the Games. Race leader Dorando Pietri, struggling to stay on his feet as he neared the finish line, was famously disqualified for the assistance he received. This marathon would prove significant for another reason, as the distance from Windsor Castle to White City - 26 miles and 385 yards - would be adopted as the standard race length from 1924. George Carey uncovers the mystery behind the massive explosion that shook Tunguska, Siberia in 1908 which has been variously attributed to a meteorite and a crashed UFO.
Here's some blurb I found [amongst others] on the Channel 4 feedback page which I thought was an interesting summary of the documentary's approach.
===
"I don't think the documentary was as bad as people are making out. I can however see that George Carey's style clashed a bit with a 'serious' take on the topic - not that he made light of it, more that he seemed to mistake keeping a cynical distance for some kind of objective reporting.
What was great was the coverage of the 'space ship' and extra-terrestrial theories when the crew went to see the museum academic. Despite what the majority would have you believe - some sort of ET involvement is actually supported by a major researcher for the Russian govt - Valery Uvarov who claims to have found an ET created defence system in the region against celestial bodies. Even when the museum professor showed Carey a lot of evidence and ended with footage of a UFO over the Tunguska area, he still refused to engage with this idea and preferred to comment on how strange it felt to be being told about this with the local Russian official being present. I found this a problematic approach - Tunguska is a weird, contradictory event and thus all ideas have to be valid for consideration.
A lot more time was spent on the meteor theories and I liked the way it was pointed out that each time scientists found themselves on the way to 'proof' something happened to stop their research dead. The problems others have with Carey focusing more on the weird people in the region than "the science" - i don't see as a major issue - both for the reason above and because this wasn't billed as a formal science documentary. The people he met mirrored the 1908 event in many ways.
It should be noted there is another theory that Carey didn't locate. It involved the finding of Tibetan scripts by a British explorer [who did exist] and subsequent trip to the remote region with this information by a European group who were said to have set off a nuclear event with the scroll information. This was for a pole-shift. If you want more details read my article in the Exopolitics Journal."

A look at child labor in the early 20th century in the United States as represented through the photography of Lewis W. Hine. The film documents the use of child labor in industry, including the exploitation of children and the lower classes in American society. Many of the jobs were extremely dangerous and numerous children and adults were injured or killed in the attempt to advance in society. On June 30, 1908, over 100 years ago, a huge explosion destroyed over 1,000 miles of a very remote and sparsely inhabited region of central Siberia.
The exact date of the event is very uncertain because nobody from the outside reached the region until 1927, and there is an 11 day difference between the Julian calendar then used by the Russians, and the Gregorian calendar which supplanted the Julian calendar.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII massacred the calendar by taking out 11 days in the month of October. The Russians did not convert to the Gregorian calendar until after the 1917 Russian Revolution.
Because of the remote location, the Russian Revolution, and Civil War, an expedition did not reach Tunguska until 1927. Initial reports said that it was a meteorite because a celestial phenomenon like the northern lights or aurora borealis could be seen as far south as London.
This explosion was not a meteorite or visitors from outer space....It was the work of the super Serbian scientist named Nikola Tesla.
Tesla's particle beam missed the North Pole!!
Normally the super genius Tesla was totally exact in his calculations. His brain was a SUPER COMPUTER and he did all the mathematics in his head without the use of even a slide rule. When he designed Niagara Falls, it worked perfectly the first time—as did all of his inventions....For Tesla to miss the North Pole must have been the work of Divine Providence.
The British were desperately seeking a super weapon that would help them restore the Papal States. Had Tesla devastated the North Pole, Perry would have reported the news, and it would have created a worldwide sensation....The true extent of the Tunguska devastation did not reach the outside world until after 1927.
The very intelligent Russians soon put two and two together and approached Tesla to acquire his technology. Tesla offered his invention to the U.S. government first but they turned him down.
Later, he offered it to the British government , but they showed no interest, because they were already totally familiar with the military potential of electricity. They did adopt his radar invention and used it to great effect during World War II.
Long Island lay in a direct path between Peary's destination and the North Pole.
Long Island lay in a direct path between Peary's destination and the North Pole.
Tesla had a clear shot at the North Pole from his transmitter located at Shoreham, Long Island.
Peary wintered in Ellesmere Island before setting out for the North Pole in 1909.
After Tesla fired his particle beam, he waited anxiously for some communication from Peary. Peary had nothing to report because Tesla overshot the target. This was very unlike the great genius Tesla because he definitely was not a trial and error inventor.
Unfortunately, the British denigrated Tesla and called him a wizard, a kook, a dangerous experimenter, and a mad scientist. Even British controlled Hollywood got in on the act and reinforced this stereotype by using a Tesla coil in a Frankenstein movie. After stealing millions of dollars in royalties, their agents Rockefeller and Morgan actually bankrupted him and he died penniless!!
The Soviet Union developed Tesla's particle beam weapons!!
To protect themselves from a sneak nuclear attack by the madmen in the British controlled Pentagon, the Russians developed defensive weapons based on Tesla's Technology.
Beginning in the 1960s, the Soviet Union conducted a substantial research program to develop a defense against ballistic missiles. The Soviets built, and Russia continues to maintain, the world's only operational anti-ballistic missile system. Additional programs focused on the development of other ground—and space-based weapons using laser, particle beam, and kinetic energy technology.

I am getting high speed footage of a bunch of interesting pistols right off the bat now that I have my Edgertronic camera, and one that has been on my list ever since I first shot it was the blow-forward Schwarzlose 1908. It's a very fast action, and my initial attempts at high speed a year or two ago didn't turn out well. Now, however, I have much better gear for this...
The initial footage is at 2000 fps, and then I sped it up to 3500. At that point it is starting to get a bit dark (the Arizona desert sunlight will need an artificial boost if I am to record at any higher of a frame rate, but you can get a pretty clear view of what is happening. It's awfully crowded inside that action, and I'm really surprised that I haven't had it malfunction on me. Counting frames of the video gives me a total cyclic rate of 0.024 seconds per shot, or (in theory) 2500 rounds per minute. Wow!

There are 2 sections. The 1st is of Tolstoy's 80th birthday at Yasnaya Polyana. It shows his wife Sofya picking flowers in the garden, his daughter Aleksandra sitting in the carriage in the white blouse, his aide and confidante, V. Chertkov, and students. It was filmed by Aleksandr Osipovich Drankov. We're not sure of all the details within the 2nd section, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, please reach out to us if you're interested in assisting with the Intertitle Cards's translation.
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was a Russian writer (most famously, War and Peace & Anna Karenina) and is oft-considered the world's greatest novelist. He was equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
