Gold Coast is a coastal city in southeastern Queensland on the east coast of Australia. It is the second most populous city in the state, the sixth most populous city in the country, and the most populous non-capital city in Australia. Description:
Australia is a special country of its own. It is about the size of the United States and is larger than the United Kingdom and all the countries in Europe put together. Originally founded as a drop-off place for convicts, Australia has grown from its roots into a thriving country that has a booming tourism industry. Before there were convicts, Australia was home to the Aboriginal and Indigenous people, the oldest culture in the world. Not only do you have an English history, but also a tribal history that anthropologists continue to study today and have only skimmed the surface in regards to Australia’s rich history. But since its founding and development into a respected country, the quirky side of the Aussie nation has surfaced. But instead of shying tourists away from the land down under, it has actually attracted more visitors and has done wonders for the tourism industry.
For example, the sport of Frisbee may be seen as a nice picnic or beach day activity, but in Australia, they take the sport very seriously. In fact, Australia has three national teams dedicated to the sport and there are thousands of hobby teams all over, with members who have dreams of becoming a professional Frisbee player.
If you have a fear of spiders or snakes, it might be best to enjoy Australia from afar. The country is home to 20 out of the 25 most poisonous snakes in the world, and they have over 200 different species of the terrifying reptile. But this is all part of a day in the life of an Aussie. Did we mention that over half of these snake species are part of the cobra family? Yikes. Also, if you are an arachnophobia, you’ll have to figure out a way to manage your fear before hopping on that plane. Not only does Australia have a lot of spiders, but they are also huge with leg spans of half a foot.
Australia is also home to 150 million sheep and 40 million kangaroos, which grossly outweighs the human population of 20 million. So you basically have more animals than people. Sheep provide a great source of economic abundance with cotton and kangaroos, well, are stereotypical Australian tourist attractions that people occasionally eat. The country also hosts the largest dingo fence. A dingo being a dog-wolf hybrid that is notorious for attacking and killing livestock and even humans.
Australians are known for their quirky accents, they love of alcohol (ever heard of Beer Fridays?), and their sense of humor. In fact, there is a running joke that all Australians are in on, and that is the legend of the drop bear. The drop bear is rumored to be a giant koala that has razor sharp teeth and claws, and attack their victims by dropping on the heads of tourists from the trees. Of course, there’s really no such thing, but Aussies have made it an art to convince tourists otherwise, all the while enjoying laughs of the fearful visitors.

Quiet towns across rural Australia are in the grip of an Ice epidemic. Major international drug cartels are working with local outlawed motorcycle gangs to push crystal meth to a captive market of children.
"It's dark. It's scary. It's dirty... You don't eat, you don't sleep. Life's chaotic", says 19-year-old Aaron, a recovering Ice addict. Aaron began using Ice when he was 15 and soon got addicted to the enormous dopamine hit, unrivalled by any other drug. He explains how at his lowest point on the drug, "I tried to hang myself in my mum's shed". Aaron's story is not unique. In the last year 350,000 Australians have smoked, snorted or injected crystal methampehtamine, and the problem is getting worse. In a community of 4,000, one in ten are using the drug. "There's been reports of 10-year-olds presenting at the Emergency Department here", says one clinical nurse. Orphan Jake saw his fortunes turn when he was recruited to deal by a motorcycle gang when he was only 11-years-old. "It seemed like the best decision I ever made. It was like winning the lotto or getting a licence to print money", he says. In areas with a desperate lack of treatment facilities and under resourced or non-existent police, a generation is being condemned to a life of drug abuse and crime.

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. Sydney's urban area is in a coastal basin, which is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Blue Mountains to the west, the Hawkesbury River to the north and the Royal National Park to the south.
The most important places to visit in Sydney are: Sydney Opera House (among the world's most recognized landmarks. Set on the Sydney harbor, it is an unforgettable sight), Sydney Harbor Bridge (simply called "the bridge" by locals, courageous ones can even climb up the bridge), Bronte Beach (lesser known than Bondi, it is a beautiful beach, popular amongst families), Blue Mountains (an unspoiled mountain range filled with Eucalyptus trees. It is located 30 miles from Sydney, and there are plenty of hiking trails), Bondi Beach (Sydney's most famous beach, its lively promenade is as exciting as the beach) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. http://www.expedia.com/Adelaide-and-vicinity.d6051330.Destination-Travel-Guides
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and is situated close to the Great Southern Ocean.
It is a compact beachside city that is full of churches, stone buildings and beautiful parklands.
This picturesque city is unusual amongst Australian cities in that it was founded by free settlers, not convicts. Those early founders put a lot of passion into creating a better life for themselves even though they were many thousands of miles from home.
Because of that history, Adelaide has a unique sense of refinement and beauty.
One of the most popular places to visit is Victoria Square which is right in the heart of the city. From here, it is easy to wander along the North Terrace District and admire the graceful buildings and museums which echo with stories from the past.
At the South Australian Museum, visitors can learn about the rich cultures that were in the area before the Europeans arrived.
Another great place to visit is the Art Gallery of South Australia where visitors can enjoy the extensive collections of Australian and International Art.
Don’t miss the legendary Adelaide Oval which many claim to be one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.
Adelaide is also well known as a gateway to the famous Barossa and Clair Valleys which are a food and wine lovers paradise.
Many of the early settlers to this area were German and they brought with them grapes from their homeland. The area is now well-known for producing outstanding shiraz and reisling.
While you are in the area, stop at any of the many wineries for a wine tasting or to enjoy a meal using fine local produce.
Adelaide is an old world city that attracts visitors for its elegance and romance.

Purpose built as Australia’s capital city, Canberra is a 3-hour drive from both the snowy mountains and the beautiful beaches of New South Wales. It is a city which honors Australia’s past and shapes its future.
With an expansive bush beauty, a relaxed attitude and colorful events, Canberra is far more than a political capital. Designed for a young nation that was just finding its feet, this city is home to many of the country's most important stories; stories that have come to define what it means to be Australian.
At the heart of Canberra’s creation story is Lake Burley Griffin. A long-standing rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne meant that neither one could be the nation’s capital. Instead, in 1911, the government launched an international design competition seeking a master plan for a brand new city.
The victor, Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin, won with a garden city design focused on a man-made lake which fits perfectly within the landscape.
When, the nation’s Governor General stood in a dusty paddock in 1913 and announced the name of the new capital, he told the nation that the city had, lying before it, a splendid destiny.
Over 100 years later, that destiny has been fulfilled in a city that preserves the great chapters of Australia’s history and continues to write the future pages of the nation’s story.

A modern city, Perth is the gem of Australia’s west coast and the capital of Western Australia. This friendly metropolis boasts pristine beaches, clear water, and plenty of coastline – not to mention an abundance of nature and mineral resources.
Start your day of Perth sightseeing with a walk through Kings Park, which is larger than New York’s Central Park and home to the Western Australia Botanic Garden. More than 3,000 species of Western Australia’s plant life, including vibrant flowers, are on display here. Most of the park consists of bushland, which means lots of wildlife and quite a few walking trails.
After a morning of reflection in the park, head over to the Swan Bell Tower to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Don’t forget your camera! You will notice the diverse nature of Perth’s architecture from this vantage point, including the modern glass structures and London-inspired Tudor buildings.
Perth tours are never complete without a ferry ride to Rottnest Island, affectionately called “Rotto” by the locals. This getaway is rife with opportunities to snorkel in the Indian Ocean, see wildlife such as seals and birds, and travel across more than 31 miles of cycle ways on a rented bicycle.
Once your feet are back on mainland Western Australia, visit one of the jewels, and ultimately what draws much of the Perth tourism: Swan Valley. This region has a landscape peppered with vineyards, no surprise given that growing grapes has been a long-standing tradition in Swan Valley. Following a short (or leisurely paced) day trip to Swan Valley, return to Perth and head to Hillarys Boat Harbour for a sunset dinner.

http://www.expedia.com/Gold-Coast.d180064.Destination-Travel-Guides
Australia’s Gold Coast is in the heart of subtropical Queensland, rife with natural beauty and a human spirit dedicated to vitality, fun, and enjoying life. The skyline of Gold Coast practically dips its toes in the ocean, and much of the area is rich in lush greenery and waterfalls. The north coast of this city began as a vacation retreat in the 1850’s, and maintains its position as the Gold Coast’s heart and soul of entertainment and surfing.
Many Gold Coast tours begin in the north and work their way south. The atmosphere in the north is quite bustling, while the south coast has a slower vibe and is a bit more relaxed. Start your trip to Gold Coast with a trip to the SkyPoint observation deck, one of the Gold Coast sightseeing gems. The deck grants stunning views of area beaches, parks, and water.
Head south to Burleigh Heads next, where you will be met with a national park and ideal surf breaks. This area is known as an aboriginal gathering place. Once you’ve had your fill of sun-soaked activities in Burleigh Head, head even further south to Coolangatta, a gateway for international travelers and home to the likes of sheltered beaches, a river, and plenty of shady parkland.
Remember that Gold Coast also happens to be the theme park capital of Australia, which helps drive Gold Coast tourism and serves as a nice complement to the lazy beach life also available. After hitting the water for some surf, go to Dreamworld, which is the largest theme park in Australia, and get an adrenaline rush on one of the many rollercoasters. SeaWorld™ and Warner Bros.® Movie World™ are also nearby.
Top off your trip down under with a trip to Mount Tamorine, a 30 minute drive inland from the coast. On the ridge of a volcano, Mount Tamborine offers a bounty rainforest trails and you can sip on local wines in Tamborine Village.

From the white Australia policy to a multicultural nation. Episode one of a three episode documentary series "Immigration Nation" - originally aired on SBS in 2010.
Episode 1:
When the Commonwealth of Australia was founded in 1901, the very last thing the nation wanted to be was multicultural. The measures taken to ensure this would be the case not only caused great human suffering, but in a supreme historical irony, actually helped create the very threat Australia feared the most -- invasion from the Asian north. (Synopsis from SBS)
**EDIT** (06/03/2011)
I have to probably agree that most of the commentary in this series is a "bleeding heart" interpretation of Australian history. The so-called paradox between implementing democratic principals with exclusion of 'undesired' peoples is something which occurred (and is occurring) universally. As pointed out:
(i) Japan has long has had a xenophobic attitude to outsiders (although it did not adopt any official policy to bar outsiders after the reformation of their feudal period)
(ii) Japan declared war on the US - which had no such policy of barring non-whites from migration (disregarding the japanese internment camps which came in due to the threat of war)
(iii) White supremacy was the go at the time from Europe to the far reaches of empire.
Having said that, it does address the key historical events associated with the implementation and dismantling of the W.A.P.

Extreme Engineering - MegaStructures - Build it Bigger
SEASON: 5
EPISODE: 2 - Drought Proofing Australia
S05E02
From the skyscrapers of Dubai to the amusement parks of Minnesota, Danny Forster travels the world to break down the most astounding, complex engineering feats to date.
In Build It Bigger, airing Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT starting on July 10, architect Danny Forster takes you inside some of the most head-scratching builds in the world. Join Danny as he meets the men and women tackling the unique challenges of constructing the tallest buildings, the most effective military tanks, the largest luxury cruise ships, and the most extreme thrill rides.
How do you build a 3,113-foot-long wooden roller coaster in winter temperatures of minus 40 degrees? Or get your workers safely to and from a worksite on a skyscraper that's 1,614 feet above street level? Or dig a water tunnel — along the San Adreas Fault and 1,000 feet below the earth's surface — without it collapsing on itself ... or flooding? Our intrepid host answers these puzzles and more.
Don't miss the big stories behind these even bigger engineering marvels.
