Hǎikǒu (Chinese: 海口), is the capital and most populous city of Hainan province, People's Republic of China. It is situated on the northern coast of Hainan, by the mouth of the Nandu River. The northern part of the city is the district of Haidian Island, which is separated from the main part of Haikou by the Haidian River, a branch of the Nandu.
Administratively, Haikou is a prefecture-level city, comprising four districts, and covering 2,280 square kilometres (880 sq mi). There are 2,046,189 inhabitants in the built up area all living within the 4 urban districts of the city.
Haikou was originally a port city. Today, more than half of the island's total trade still goes through its ports. The city is home to Hainan University, which has its main campus on Haidian Island.
The hanzi characters comprising the city's name, 海口, mean ocean/sea and mouth/port, respectively. Thus, the name "Haikou" is also a word for "seaport". Haikou originally served as the port for Qiongshan, the ancient administrative capital of Hainan island, located some 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) inland to the south east. During its early history Haikou was a part of Guangdong province. In the 13th century it was fortified and became a military post under the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). The port is located west of the mouth of the Nandu River, Hainan's principal river. When Qiongshan was opened to foreign trade under the Treaty of Tianjin in 1858, Haikou started to rival the old administrative city. In 1926, Haikou overtook Qiongshan in population and it was declared a separate administrative city. Haikou was developed as a port during the Sino-Japanese War (1937–45) when the Japanese invaded and occupied Hainan Island from early 1939 to 1945.

The US$600,000 World Ladies Championship will once again by staged on Mission Hills Haikou’s signature Blackstone Course, voted Best Championship Course in Asia in 2013.
Top trio Inbee Park, Suzann Pettersen and So Yeon Ryu are ready to reprise last year’s final-round battle when the World Ladies Championship is staged at Mission Hills Haikou in China.
Organised in conjunction with the China Golf Association and co-sanctioned by the China LPGA Tour, it will be the fourth event on this year’s Ladies European Tour schedule.
The World Ladies Championship offers a unique “three events in one” format – individual professional competition, a team championship in which countries are represented by teams of two, and an individual amateur category.

Di Hainan, lebih dari 90 ribu orang dievakuasi dari pantai timur pulau itu, untuk menghindari jatuhnya korban jiwa. Kantor berita Xinhua, pada Selasa (16/9/2014) melaporkan, bahwa pemerintah daerah Hainan telah mempersiapkan operasi bantuan bencana.
Pihak China Southern Airlines, akan membatalkan semua penerbangan dari dan ke Ibukota Provinsi Hainan, Haikou. Sedangkan layanan kapal feri dan kereta telah dihentikan.

Hainan Island is the largest island in China. Taiwan is bigger, but I am at this point not sure/undecided if it is part of China (harr harr, discuss!)
We took an overnight train from Guilin to Zhangjiang, a town at the base of the Leizhou Peninsula, from where we jumped on a bus which took us to the port of Xuwen/Hai'an, the southern-most city in continental China.
The bus drove onto the ferry, we made our way across the Qiongzhou Strait whilst engaging in a usual variety of shenanigans, and then spent the night in Haikou.
Next day we took another bus to Sanya, which is the BIG destination city on Hainan Island, with huge resorts, beaches, and thousands of Russian tourists everywhere.
It was odd seeing so many Russians, but I guess Sanya ALWAYS beats Siberia in February.
