Hpakant’s grim hills conceal the world’s largest known deposits of jade. Deep veins of the precious stone run throughout this area in south central Kachin State, a region once lush with jungle and woven by clear streams.

Hpakant (Burmese: ဖားကန့်; also Hpakan and Farkent), is a town in Hpakant Township,
Kachin State of the northernmost part of the Union of Myanmar.
It is located on the Uyu River 350 km north of Mandalay in the middle of one of the world's most inhospitable and malaria infested jungles,
cut off for several months a year during the monsoons. It is famous for its jade mines which produce the world's best quality jadeite.
The landslide occurred in the early morning hours, when a man-made heap of waste soil mined out of the nearby jade mine collapsed.
Many of those killed were people living in a small village near the waste heap, including both miners and others who had scavenged through
the waste soil looking for jade remnants to sell. The cause of the collapse is not known.
Rescue efforts by the Myanmar Red Cross and other groups have been made to find and recover survivors; one person was
pulled from the rubble alive, but subsequently died from their injuries.At least 116 bodies have been reported as having been recovered.
Around a hundred people have been reported as missing. The total number of casualties cannot be accurately estimated, as the precise
number of people living near the site is not known. According to an Hpakant Township General Administration Department official, people
had been warned to avoid living near the waste heap because of its potential for landslides.
The jade industry in Myanmar generates estimated annual revenues of $31 billion USD.
It is presently unclear which companies are responsible for the waste dump, although it is known that prior to the 2015 democratic election,
many of these were controlled by the military leadership of the country, leading to questionable safety practices and corruption.
Deaths from similar landslides are common, but none of the scale of the Hpakant landslide.
A spokesman for the National League for Democracy party said they will investigate the companies and the practices that led to this disaster.

Man and rock exist in inverse value in the Himalayan foothills of Myanmar’s Kachin state, wedged between India and China. The rock—a translucent mass of sodium aluminum silicate known as jadeite—is one of the world’s most coveted gems, chiefly among the Chinese, whose growing buying power has spurred record sales. The roughly 300,000 jade pickers who sift through the detritus left by larger mining operations are migrants whose lives are threatened by landslides, drug addiction and disease. Tying the precious stone to dispensable miners is a web of Burmese military-linked firms, Chinese companies, ethnic rebel commanders and drug kingpins wanted by the U.S. government. The stone of heaven, as it is known in China, is also fueling civil war between the Burmese military and ethnic Kachin guerrillas seeking self-rule. Jade comes in many hues, from the shade of a kingfisher’s throat to what the Chinese describe as “moss entangled with melting snow.” But for the people of Myanmar, it is stained, most of all, by blood.

In 2011 fighting broke out between the Kachin Independence Army and the Burmese Army in the area around the Hpakant jade mines displacing an estimated 90,000 people by September, 2012 and killing hundreds of people.

Located 48 miles from Mogaung, Hpakant.
Political economy
Like an old mining town of the American West, Hpakant has been dubbed "the wild wild east" replete with alcohol, gambling, prostitution, and opium dens. Since after the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) came into the area before negotiating a cease-fire agreement with Burma's military government in the early 1990s, heroin is no longer openly on sale on the streets of Hpakant. Both addicts and drug dealers were rounded up, taken to the nearby Uru River, shot and dumped in the river.

Hpakant (Burmese: ဖားကန့်; also Hpakan and Farkent), is a town in Hpakant Township,
Kachin State of the northernmost part of the Union of Myanmar.
It is located on the Uyu River 350 km north of Mandalay in the middle of one of the world's most inhospitable and malaria infested jungles,
cut off for several months a year during the monsoons. It is famous for its jade mines which produce the world's best quality jadeite.
The landslide occurred in the early morning hours, when a man-made heap of waste soil mined out of the nearby jade mine collapsed.
Many of those killed were people living in a small village near the waste heap, including both miners and others who had scavenged through
the waste soil looking for jade remnants to sell. The cause of the collapse is not known.
Rescue efforts by the Myanmar Red Cross and other groups have been made to find and recover survivors; one person was
pulled from the rubble alive, but subsequently died from their injuries.At least 116 bodies have been reported as having been recovered.
Around a hundred people have been reported as missing. The total number of casualties cannot be accurately estimated, as the precise
number of people living near the site is not known. According to an Hpakant Township General Administration Department official, people
had been warned to avoid living near the waste heap because of its potential for landslides.
The jade industry in Myanmar generates estimated annual revenues of $31 billion USD.
It is presently unclear which companies are responsible for the waste dump, although it is known that prior to the 2015 democratic election,
many of these were controlled by the military leadership of the country, leading to questionable safety practices and corruption.
Deaths from similar landslides are common, but none of the scale of the Hpakant landslide.
A spokesman for the National League for Democracy party said they will investigate the companies and the practices that led to this disaster.

The roughly 300,000 jade pickers who sift through the detritus left by larger mining operations are migrants whose lives are threatened by landslides, drug addiction and disease. Tying the precious stone to dispensable miners is a web of Burmese military-linked firms, Chinese companies, ethnic rebel commanders and drug kingpins wanted by the U.S. government. The stone of heaven, as it is known in China, is also fueling civil war between the Burmese military and ethnic Kachin guerrillas seeking self-rule. Jade comes in many hues, from the shade of a kingfisher’s throat to what the Chinese describe as “moss entangled with melting snow.” But for the people of Myanmar, it is stained, most of all, by blood.

The weather food fruits hotels and resorts are wonderful as are the people. If you are kind to everyone then travel is unrestricted and authorities are simply concerned about your safety. Those concerned about permits can if they wish obtain them very easily if they have a guide to look after them and request to pay extra for fast track service. Jade is an ornamental stone. The term jade is applied to two different metamorphic rocks that are made up of different silicate minerals: Nephrite consists of a microcrystalline interlocking fibrous matrix of the calcium, magnesium-iron rich amphibole mineral series tremolite (calcium-magnesium)-ferroactinolite (calcium-magnesium-iron). The middle member of this series with an intermediate composition is called actinolite (the silky fibrous mineral form is one form of asbestos). The higher the iron content the greener the colour. Jadeite is a sodium- and aluminium-rich pyroxene. The gem form of the mineral is a microcrystalline interlocking crystal matrix. Bai Dinh largest pagoda in Ninh Binh, Vietnam
The New Bai Đính Temple encompasses an area of 700 hectares, located on Ba Rau hills, near the Hoang Long River. This is a large complex which includes many structures built over several phases starting in 2003 and finally completed in 2010. The temple's architecture follows traditional lines, consisting of large halls, courtyards and enclosures, but the huge scale of Bai Dinh makes it strikingly different from previously built Vietnamese Buddhist pagodas. The largest structure, the Tam Thế Hall, rises to 34 m at its roof ridge and measuring over 59 m in length. The construction materials are locally quarried stone and timber from Ninh Bình, tiles from Bát Tràng... although reinforced concrete was also employed for the scale of construction. CHINESE NEW YEAR - YANGON, MYANMAR : EDITED ON $175 LENOVO MIIX 300TABLET
YANGON CITY, MYANMAR - FEB 09,2016 This video was filmed about a half hour before I had to dash to the airport to catch my flight back to the US. It was partially edited on the airplane and finished when I got home. Thousands of local Burmese hit the streets to celebrate 2016 Year of The Monkey or 4713th Chinese Calendar Year. This video is of the grand opening ceremony for the dragon dance competition. Most of the Chinese left Myanmar during the military government occupation but they still celebrate Chinese New Years in Myanmar. As you can see in the video there are few Westerners or tourists in the audience, mostly local Burmese. What makes this video special is that it was filmed in 4K, then transcoded into 1080P. Hpakant Jadeite Mine in Kachin state produces high quality jade of almost every color except red. Myanmar has many interesting jade mines as well as other wonderful gems. The weather food fruits hotels and resorts are wonderful as are the people. If you are kind to everyone then travel is unrestricted and authorities are simply concerned about your safety. Those concerned about permits can if they wish obtain them very easily if they have a guide to look after them and request to pay extra for fast track service. Visitors are recommended to wear local attire and not to bring valuables (other than wads of hidden cash should you fancy a dabble). If you are on a.budget the dirty off-road pick ups that leave Myithyina shortly after midnight will agree to take you happily if you offer to share fuel costs. If you would like to cherry pick the best rocks before they reach Mandalay without having to enter Hpakan then the truck drivers are creatures of habit stopping at the same coffee and noodle shops. Hard bargaining is sometimes needed.but many are reasonable too so always make sure you have an idea of fair price to avoid being discredited. If you are a fussy eater then get yourself a nice Myanmar picnic kit made of stainless.steel so you can bring your own nosh.

This video was filmed about a half hour before I had to dash to the airport to catch my flight back to the US. It was partially edited on the airplane and finished when I got home.
Thousands of local Burmese hit the streets to celebrate 2016 Year of The Monkey or 4713th Chinese Calendar Year. This video is of the grand opening ceremony for the dragon dance competition. Most of the Chinese left Myanmar during the military government occupation but they still celebrate Chinese New Years in Myanmar. As you can see in the video there are few Westerners or tourists in the audience, mostly local Burmese.
What makes this video special is that it was filmed in 4K, then transcoded into 1080P. It is an example of my first completed video edited on a portable Lenovo 2 in 1 Miix 300 Ideapad ultrabook and Corel VideoStudio 8.
While normally I edit videos in FCPX on a top of the line 13" i7 dual core Macbook Pro, what I will show you is how to edit videos on travel using an inexpensive ultra portable solution for around $200. Subscribe to my YouTube channel to learn more.

On this episode of DVB's Doh Pyay Doh Myay Roadshow, the team visits Hpakant in southern Kachin State, where the hunt for Jade is intensifying as political change in Burma looms. Military elites, drug lords, crony capitalists—all desperate to rip as much jade from the Kachin hills at Hpakant before a new government threatens a black market trade worth as much as US$20 billion per year. In their wake come the hand-pickers. Small time miners desperate for a tiny slice of the giant jade trade. Their communities are wracked by drugs and crime. But it is site-disasters such as landslides that come as the most acute risk of death.

Many of those killed were people living in a small village near the waste heap, including both miners and others who had scavenged through
the waste soil looking for jade remnants to sell. The cause of the collapse is not known.
Rescue efforts by the Myanmar Red Cross and other groups have been made to find and recover survivors; one person was
pulled from the rubble alive, but subsequently died from their injuries.At least 116 bodies have been reported as having been recovered.
Around a hundred people have been reported as missing. The total number of casualties cannot be accurately estimated, as the precise
number of people living near the site is not known. According to an Hpakant Township General Administration Department official, people
had been warned to avoid living near the waste heap because of its potential for landslides.
The jade industry in Myanmar generates estimated annual revenues of $31 billion USD.
It is presently unclear which companies are responsible for the waste dump, although it is known that prior to the 2015 democratic election,
many of these were controlled by the military leadership of the country, leading to questionable safety practices and corruption.
Deaths from similar landslides are common, but none of the scale of the Hpakant landslide.
A spokesman for the National League for Democracy party said they will investigate the companies and the practices that led to this disaster.

On this episode of DVB's Doh Pyay Doh Myay Roadshow, the team visits Hpakant in southern Kachin State, where the hunt for Jade is intensifying as political change in Burma looms.
Military elites, drug lords, crony capitalists—all desperate to rip as much jade from the Kachin hills at Hpakant before a new government threatens a black market trade worth as much as US$20 billion per year.
In their wake come the hand-pickers. Small time miners desperate for a tiny slice of the giant jade trade. Their communities are wracked by drugs and crime.
But it is site-disasters such as landslides that come as the most acute risk of death.

Man and rock exist in inverse value in the Himalayan foothills of Myanmar’s Kachin state, wedged between India and China. The rock—a translucent mass of sodium aluminum silicate known as jadeite—is one of the world’s most coveted gems, chiefly among the Chinese, whose growing buying power has spurred record sales. The roughly 300,000 jade pickers who sift through the detritus left by larger mining operations are migrants whose lives are threatened by landslides, drug addiction and disease. Tying the precious stone to dispensable miners is a web of Burmese military-linked firms, Chinese companies, ethnic rebel commanders and drug kingpins wanted by the U.S. government. The stone of heaven, as it is known in China, is also fueling civil war between the Burmese military and ethnic Kachin guerrillas seeking self-rule. Jade comes in many hues, from the shade of a kingfisher’s throat to what the Chinese describe as “moss entangled with melting snow.” But for the people of Myanmar, it is stained, most of all, by blood.
