Lusaka - Zambia's Fabulous Boom Town

One of the fastest growing cities in central Africa, it has become a cultural, economic and political hub.
It is quite busy, and that makes the markets fun. Because there are so many vendors clamouring

One of the fastest growing cities in central Africa, it has become a cultural, economic and political hub.
It is quite busy, and that makes the markets fun. Because there are so many vendors clamouring for your attention, there are lots of possibilities to bargain. (I think a responsible tourist doesn't bargain too hard!)
I have heard that pick-pockets lurk in Lusaka and to be quite careful, but I think that can be said of any big city.

Lusaka 'Snake Man' Putting his snake in his pocket.. Rabson Mkandawire also known as Dr. Simbazako claims the snake is his grandfather's spirit and it guides him..
Rabson Mkandawire aka Dr Simbazako this morning visited Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) offices to follow-up on discussions for a his certificate of possessing the reptile.
Dr Simbazako, a tradition health practioner who arrived at the ZAWA just after 11:00 hours in the company of a friend seemed high spirited and cooperative explained that the reptile is nothing but his grand father’s spirit.
“I could not come with the snake here, but as you know ‘spirits’ you need to treated with respect they deserve,” he said.
He said since he took the snake to Chingwere Cemetary over the weekend, he has faced challenges to convince the spirits to be brought to ZAWA for its certification and they have since given 21 days before they approve his request.
“Mudzimu wa ambuya wa kamba at ni ba patse 21 days. Ni bo kalipa maningi. [My grandfather’s spirit is still very annoyed, so I need to give them 21 day.
Rabson was last week arrested by Kabwata Police who later handed him to ZAWA for being in possession of wildlife namely a snake similar to a brown house snake.
The snake is docile and Rabson claims is harmless even if stamped upon.
When the story was broken it attracted a heavy of media attention as brought an interesting angle of the thing thin like between science and superstition.
ZAWA is making efforts to help him with a license to posses the reptile and give him handling guidelines so that in future the snake does not lead to public panic.

Another dashcam video :-) This one covers the 700+ km journey along the T4 highway in Zambia from Lusaka to Mfuwe - actually right through the town of Mfuwe to a guesthouse on the edge of the South Luangwa National Park.
The T4 is known as the Great East Road within Lusaka, and runs east out of the city, along the north side of the Lower Zambezi National Park, across the Luangwa River, then along the border with Mozambique to the city of Chipata (on the Malawi border). From there we went north on the D104 straight into Mfuwe. The road conditions ranged from excellent to awful (especially the detours for the road construction). Oh, and to add to the fun, it was the beginning of rainy season so the detours were... wet to say the least :-)
It's around 10.5 hours of video compressed down to 1 hour 40 minutes.
The video was recorded with a DOD LS430W dashcam, and was recorded on 31 December 2014.
The music is traditional Zambian.

Kariba Ferry to Matusadona, Zimbabwe. Travel guide.

Kariba is once again our departure point for our next destination - Matusadona National Park.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Zimbabwe: http://www.selfdrive4x4.co.za/
Kariba Ferries operates a ferry service across the lake on their car ferry Sea Lion and its sister Ferry Sea Horse. The 280-km trip across the lake takes approximately 24 hours.
It has two departure points, one from Kariba itself at the eastern end and the other from Mlibizi at the western end.
The government run DDF - which stands for District Development Fund-Shipping service ferry operates scheduled ferry trips to various destinations on the lake.
The best way to visit Matusadona is to charter a ferry from DDF. This 50-km trip will take about 4 - 5 hours depending on the whether. Normally by road the park is reached via Karoi. Eight km north of Karoi on the Harare/Lusaka road turn left through the Urungwe Communal Land.115 km from Karoi, the Sanyati River is crossed. Continue on along the Binga road for a further 62-km and then turn right and continue on for 82 km to Tashinga, which is the headquarters for the park.
From Kariba this route is more than 400-km long and can take up to a full day to cover. From Karoi the roads are either gravel or dirt. The last 80- km is rough and not suitable for saloon cars, and during the rainy season the road could be impassable even in 4x4 vehicles. The trip on the ferry is more enjoyable though, as you can sit back and relax while you ease your way out over the lake.
As you leave Kariba behind small islands appear on the horizon as the captain skilfully manoeuvres the craft on its route.
Dozens of houseboats and other smaller craft are encountered on your way. No wonder Kariba is known as Zimbabwe's Riviera. Lake Kariba is recognised by many as the tourist paradise of Zimbabwe. It is 280 km in length and supports a large population of people and animals along the shoreline.
A wide range of activities are on offer to the visitor - game viewing, boating, sailing, water-skiing, scuba diving and houseboat cruises.
But it is the fishing that is probably the most sought after activity, particularly the fighting Tiger fish. Wildlife in the area is prolific and elephant and buffalo are common sights along the shoreline.Other species, which one can see, are impala, waterbuck, zebra and sable.
Birdlife is varied and includes many water birds such as herons and egrets as well as large numbers of fish eagles.
Visitors can also hire one of the many houseboats available at Kariba.
This is the ideal fishing holiday, cruising slowly up and down the lake, stopping to fish at will, and enjoying the spectacular sunsets whilst the captain carefully moors the boat for the evening.
The Matusadona National Park lies along the southern shores of the Lake and the Department of National Parks provides several campsites within the park.
In addition there are many top quality safari operators in this area offering small, exclusive camps staffed with professional guides to take visitors on game drives, walking or fishing.

Vacation travel video about nature park Lake Malawai in Africa.
Framed by Malawi, Tanzania and Mosambique, Lake Malawi in the heart of Africa is situated at the southern end of East Africa’s Rift Valley. It extends more than six hundred kilometres from north to south, is up to eighty kilometres wide and in some sections is over seven hundred metres deep.To explore the third largest lake in East Africa we begin north of Malawi's eastern coast at Thunduzi Beach in the Chilumba region. Close to the bleak town, the coastline looks quite paradisiacal. Out in the hot sun the local people wash their laundry in the gentle waves of a sandy beach and fishing nets are laid out to dry on the shore. The location of the small town of Nkhata Bay is quite spectacular, a large, sheltered bay, accessible via a steep slope. It is a restless, colourful and vibrant harbour town and the northernmost point which famous explorer Dr. David Livingstone reached on his voyage of discovery. Cichlids, the living jewels of Lake Malawi, are highly sought after among aquatic fish enthusiasts. The brightly-coloured males achieve the highest prices in both Europe and the U.S.A. Diving just off the coast is like being in a gigantic aquarium and around a thousand species of dazzling cichlids inhabit the rocky reefs around various islands. It is not necessary to dive deep to observe the Malawi cichlids as the most colourful varieties are to be found just below the surface. In the depths, strange craters rise from the muddy seabed. Some have a diameter of more than two metres and are one metre high. They are not volcanoes but the leks of male cichlids. The tiny fish spend months building the leks so as to make a good impression on passing females. Lake Malawi, the ‘Lake Of Stars’, is a paradise of nature where in 1980 the southern section became the first national park in the world to be used for the conservation of freshwater fish.

Chizarira National Park is situated on the Zambezi escarpment in the north/west part of Zimbabwe, overlooking the great Zambezi Valley and the upper waters of Lake Kariba.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Zimbabwe: http://www.selfdrive4x4.co.za/
A remote area of 192 000 hectares of wilderness country with magnificent gorges, plateau and floodplains, this National Park is unique and in a class of its own.
The area is relatively undeveloped and road conditions are rough within the park.
Backpacking wilderness trails, escorted by an experienced and armed Officer of the Department, are run during the dry season within Chizarira.
The trails are not readily available, but with prior arrangement at station level it can be arranged, ranging from a few hours duration to a few days depending on visitors' needs.
An armed Game Scout can be made available to escort visitors on daytime walks within the park.
It should be noted that unaccompanied walking by visitors is not permitted.
There are six exclusive camping sites established at present, each of which is limited to one party of a maximum of 12 persons. We visit a few of these sites.
Kaswiswi Bush camp is situated on the upper reaches of the Luizilukulu River, 6-km from the park headquarters. This camp has the best facilities.
Facilities consist of two sleeping shelters; one dining shelter with concrete table and benches plus a braai/cooking place.
The camp also boasts an ablution block with flush toilet, shower and a kitchen area, all with hot water.
Please note that water may not be available during the dry season.
Mobola Bush Camp is situated on the Mucheni River below the Manzituba Spring, 6-km from the park's headquarters.
No shelters have been constructed at this camp as yet, and the only facilities are concrete table and bench.
An ablution block with flush toilet, shower and basin and kitchen area, all with hot water, now exist at Mabola.
Water is pumped from the perennial Mucheni River, which is close by, into a header tank.
The Mucheni View campsite is situated on the verge of the escarpment overlooking the Valley and in the distance, Lake Kariba.
The camp is 4-km from Park's headquarters with minimum development, comprising of a braai stand/cooking place, a shade and a toilet.
Please note that there is no water at this camp.
Other campsites are: Mucheni Gorge Campsite, Kaswiswi 2 Camp site and Busi Bush Camp which is 35-km from the parks Headquarters.
