Baotou (simplified Chinese: 包头; traditional Chinese: 包頭; pinyin: Bāotóu, Mongolian: 
Buɣutu) is a mid-sized industrial city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. Governed as a prefecture-level city, its urban areas are home to a population of approximately 1.78 million, with a total population of over 2.65 million accounting for counties under its jurisdiction. The city's Mongolian name means "place with deer", and an alternate name in Chinese is "Lùchéng" (鹿城), meaning "Deer City".
Baotou is divided into 10 county-level divisions, including 7 districts,1 county and 2 banners.
The area now known as Baotou was inhabited since ancient times by nomads, most notably the Mongols. Near the end of the Han Dynasty, Lü Bu, a particularly noteworthy warrior, was born here. Compared to the capital, Hohhot, Baotou's construction as a city came relatively late, being incorporated as a town in 1809. The city's site was chosen because it was in an arable region of the Yellow River's Great Bend.

I took my father to China as it was a place he always wanted to visit. But he didn't like the idea of living out of the back of a car- like the rest of our trip was planned for- so we went on a 3-week guided tour. I wrote about the trip to my students back in Japan in a narrated scrapbook. I read from that as well as my travel diary and remember some of the highlights and lowlights of our travels through China.

I was overjoyed to find that my hometown Baotou, Inner Mongolia, is home to one of the six dedicated Vipassana Centers (in the tradition of Goenka) in China. It was quite a surprise, because Baotou is a far-away, little-known industrial city, without much of a cultural scene or spiritual heritage ... Surprise discovery. On my recent trip back to China, I went to visit family in our hometown Baotou, Inner Mongolia, a small (by Chinese standard) industrial city of 2.6 million people near the Mongolian border.
