International Women's Day 2015: A Message by UN Women's Executive Director
“We call on countries to ‘step it up’ for gender equality.”
In her message for International Women's Day 2015, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka says gender parity must be reached before 2030, so that the sluggish trajectory of progress that condemns a child born today to wait 80 years before they see an equal world can be reversed. She calls on all countries to “step it up” for gender equality, to reach ‘Planet 50:50’ before 2030.

Change your twitter profile picture to your mothers name and #MyMothersNameIs …. Let the world know she gave her all to raise you.
For men in Egypt and in many other countries in the Middle East, there is a peculiar taboo of not disclosing one's mother’s name in public, lest her name become a subject of shame and ridicule in public forums. Over time, her name becomes forgotten and she’s only referred to as ‘The mother of her eldest son’. UN Women’s 'Give Mom Back Her Name’ initiative is simple yet powerful and aims to take steps to eradicate this taboo and giving mother’s in Egypt and the Middle East their names back in public fora.
Mohammed Naciri, UN Women Regional Director, says, “ A woman's name should never be associated with shame or embarrassment - this mother's day, we are reclaiming that space and recognizing women for the incredible individuals they are, not only as the mother of her eldest son.”
The initiative is created together with IMPACT BBDO Dubai and aims to open a larger conversation of women´s rights and gender equality in the Middle East and the world.
While the region has many challenges to overcome to reach gender equality, such initiatives aim to change the fabric of society at community levels; including questioning cultural norms and ultimately striving towards building an inclusive, equal society.

Fact-checking the UN: Is the Internet dangerous for women?
A new UN report claims that “73 percent of women have been exposed to online violence.” To combat this alleged epidemic of sexist mayhem on the web, it calls for draconian measures—including more government supervision and censorship of the internet. The UN report insists the internet is an unsafe place for women. There is a lot of viciousness on the web—including threats of violence—but is it as pervasive as the UN Report suggests—and are women actually at greater risk than men?
Let’s start with the report’s showcase statistic that “73 percent of women have experienced online violence.” Where is the research to back it up? The claim is footnoted. But the footnote takes you to another UN publication that says nothing about online violence.
After a few calls and an email, the lead author of the UN report, Nihdi Tandon, had her office send me the source. It was the web site of a small volunteer group called HaltABUSE that helps people cope with online threats and stalking. The group reported that, of the 349 people who sought their help in 2010, 73 percent were women and 27 percent were men. (The women’s percentage was lower for more recent years.)
And that, believe it or not, was the United Nation’s “source” for its disturbing claim that “73 percent of the women on the internet are victims of abuse.” Imagine if I claimed that, because 73 percent of those who watch the Factual Feminist are women, therefore 73 percent of the world’s women watch my videos. I wish it were true. But the rules of logic intervene.
In 2014 Pew Research carried out a survey of internet users. It found that lots of people are hassled, insulted, and called names online—slightly more men than women. More women than men are sexually harassed (7% women and 4% men), but men are the primary targets of threats (10% men compared to 6% women).
The Pew findings suggest that, overall, men face as much or more abuse than women. Another study by a professional polling organization found that males aged 19 are the group most likely to be affected by trolling or bullying among teenagers.
But the bogus 73% statistic was headlined by TIME, highlighted in Washington Post –and repeated on countless new sites—including several that attract a lot of young readers such as MTV.com and Teen Vogue.
The report is packed with dubious statistics and bizarre pronouncements. On page 48 we learn that “Cyber-touch is recognized as equally harmful as a physical touch.” Recognized by whom? Cyber touch is a metaphor—physical touch is not.
In another section, the report speaks of “recent research on how violent video games are turning children, mostly boy, into killing zombies.” The footnote leads to a rambling screed by a disciple of the infamous Lyndon LaRouch.
Not only is the report riddled with mistakes—its proposals are totalitarian. It urges governments to use their powers to license only those internet providers and search engines that “supervise” user content. This is precisely what China does to censor its people online; except instead of subverting the communist party, the crime would now be mocking a woman.
In the US, freedom of expression is guaranteed by the First Amendment. The Supreme Court routinely blocks government officials from censoring even highly offensive speech. The internet can be rough—and threats of violence or stalking and can be terrifying—but these are crimes and they are legally actionable wherever they occur. Beyond that, a more civil and mannerly internet should be a matter of private norms—and many internet sites are promoting that. Government supervision of conversation is the last thing that any of us, male or female, need.
Fact-checking the UN: Is the Internet dangerous for women?
wn.com/Fact Checking The Un Is The Internet Dangerous For Women
A new UN report claims that “73 percent of women have been exposed to online violence.” To combat this alleged epidemic of sexist mayhem on the web, it calls for draconian measures—including more government supervision and censorship of the internet. Before anyone acts on these UN recommendations, let’s check out a few facts.

Partial transcript:
UN Women Conference Draws Global Attention
A global women summit, co-hosted by China and the United Nations (UN) Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), on Sunday focused on women's rights and development and drew global attention.
The one-day conference was held at the UN headquarters in New York City and was well received by all the participants.
A journalist from Peru attending the conference said: "We have problems in our country because women are not fully integrated equally with the men. In some parts of our country there's still discrimination of gender, so we are interested in everything that has to do with the subject."

Cyber Violence Against Women - MGTOW
The group behind the He For She campaign are using the UN to demand internet censorship with regards to Cyber Violence Against Women. And they are saying that if you type something threatening to a woman online and hurt her feelings then that's the same as committing an act of violence against her. They are calling it Cyber Violence Against Women and they want the countries of the world to recognize so called acts of online violence the same way that they recognize real violent crimes. It's no coincidence that Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn were there discussing and pushing for this using the United Nations. They have been heavily criticized by Gamergate and I'm sure they don't want it to happen again or do they? Remember that after Anita Sarkeesian didn't make her speech at a university in Utah she make hundreds of thousands of dollars when people sent her money to help her out for her loss of income. I honestly don't think that Sarkeesian and Quinn think they have a chance in hell of getting the countries of the world to get rid of freedom of speech when it comes to doing parodies and criticizing someone or an organization. The only way internet censorship would happen is if
the internet becomes irrelevant because we develop some other type of the technology. It would be the equivalent of someone censoring something like VHS now that it's become an obsolete technology. But again I don't think that will happen either. We often hear people saying that eventually the state will bring about thought crimes like it was predicted by George Orwell's book 1984. But I would argue that before it becomes acceptable for society to accept thought crimes they have to bridge over somehow. And that's why I think the idea of saying something on the internet and making it a reality simply because it's on the internet is the closest we can come to thought crimes right now in our society. If the UN has it's way then people like myself could go to jail for criticizing women like Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian. I've made videos about both of these women before and have criticized them. Because of that I would be guilty of violence against women for voicing my opinion. I didn't hurt them, threaten them or do anything else besides express my right to freedom of speech.

China pledges US$10 million support for women′s rights at UN
시진핑, 유엔 여성기구에 1천만
China′s President Xi Jinping has pledged at the United Nations to promote gender equality and women′s development worldwide.
Some are calling the move ironic, considering China has been highly criticized for detaining human rights activists, including many women.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
Chinese President Xi Jinping co-chaired this year′s UN meeting on women′s development.
It commemorates the 20th anniversary of a UN conference in Beijing where world leaders adopted a blueprint to achieve gender equality,...which remains a UN goal for 2030.
″China will donate 10 million dollars to UN Women for the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and its platform for action and the realization of the related goals in the post-2015 development agenda.″
President Xi pledged to help other developing countries establish 100 health projects for women and children over the next five years.
He also promised to send teams of medical experts to provide services.
But the move raised eyebrows of some western diplomats... including former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton... as China has been internationally blamed for detaining human rights activists, including many women.
The Democratic presidential hopeful took to Twitter, saying it′s shameless for Xi to host a meeting on women′s rights at the UN while persecuting feminists.
Clinton is referring to the recent arrest of five women in China for planning a demonstration against sexual harassment on International Women′s Day in March.
During the UN meeting Sunday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged world leaders to do more for women′s rights.
President Park Geun-hye took up the issue in her keynote speech to the UN... vowing to provide 200 million dollars in the next five years to help young girls in developing countries.
Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made a four-point proposal on further advancing women's rights worldwide while addressing the summit.
"His speech was well-done. It's very encouraging to see the president of the world's most populated country and presumably half of its population is women - I don't know. But it's very encouraging to see your president talk about women's rights. My only concern is that he was so focused on women's development," said a journalist from the U.S.
Chinese Alibaba chairman Jack Ma also delivered a speech as the co-chairman of the high-level summit.
"President Xi delivered a speech in the morning, making commitment on behalf of the Chinese government to women's development, which represents the future efforts the Chinese government is to make. I'm pleased and happy about that," said Ma.
Bill Gates' wife Melinda Gates was also invited to deliver speech at the summit.
Ma said Chinese entrepreneurs will support women's development in many practical ways.
"Alibaba announced yesterday to donate five million U.S. dollars to the UN Women to support women's development undertakings, and we also have many specific programs to support women to start their business and support women's enterprises and employment. We'll have concrete programs," said Ma.
