Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) also referred to Lupus is a chronic multisystem autoimmune disorder of the connective tissues; sometimes referred to as a group of syndromes due to the difference in how it can manifests in patients. Autoimmune disorders occur when the body’s natural defenses against disease start attacking itself. This disorder is difficult to diagnose. The patient can have periods of remission and flare-ups. Inflammation can be seen in almost any area and every body system as the body’s immune response is lowered. Lupus is known for a butterfly rash on the face, they were first seen in the early 1800’s. The discovery of the systemic involvement was first in the late 1800’’s with the joints lymphatic system, central nervous, neuromuscular and circulatory system/involvement.
