Still shocked and excited from last night, it's an honor for us to show you this absolutely MINDBLOWING TITLES made for OFFF by PostPanic.
Thank you so much to PostPanic, and specially to Mischa Rozema, Ania Markham and Si Scott, simply epic!!!
Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
Says Ania Markham, Executive Producer at PostPanic:
“The images created by the crew of people working on the titles has been unbelievable, with nationalities represented including Dutch, Czech, English, American, Polish, German, Swedish and Belgian. It’s been a great opportunity for all of us to work together on a non-commercial project we’re passionate about and we’re so proud of the combined effort and final result.”
DIRECTORS NOTES (Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully,

Dutch given names
A Dutch child's birth and given name(s) must be officially registered by the parents within 3 days after birth. It is not uncommon to give a child several given names. Usually the first one is for daily use, often in a diminutive form. Traditionally, Catholics often chose Latinized names for their children, such as Catharina and Wilhelmus, while Protestants more commonly chose simple Dutch forms such as Trijntje and Willem. In both cases, names were often shortened for everyday use (Wilhelmus and Willem became Wim). Nearly half of Dutch children today receive one name, over 30% are given two names, 17% have three names, 2.5% get four names and only very few children have five or more given names.

Don Askarian
Don Askarian (* 1949 in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh) is an international producer, film director and screenwriter of Armenian origin.
Biography
Don Askarian was born in Stepanakert, Nagorno Karabakh. In 1967 he went to Moscow and studied history and art. He worked as an assistant-director and film critic for a year after his study. In 1975-1977 Don Askarian was imprisoned. In 1978 he emigrated from the USSR to West Berlin. Since then he has lived and worked in Germany, The Netherlands and in Armenia, where he founded his own film companies. He is a prize-winner at several international film festivals.
TV-Stations like ARD, WDR, ZDF, Channel 4, Arte, but also Belgian, Greek, Swiss, Slovakian, Armenian TV Channels are constant co-producers and buyers of all his films, which were sold and broadcast world wide about 80 times.
In 1996, Don Askarian published his book "The Dangerous Light". In 2002 Don Askarian was honored with a Harvard Film Archive retrospective. In 2004, he received the Golden Camera Award for Life Achievement at Int. ART Film Festival, Slovakia.

Philip Catherine (born 27 October 1942 in London, England) is a Belgian jazz guitarist, born to an English mother and a Belgian father, known for his collaborations on numerous albums and with jazz musicians like Chet Baker, Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, Richard Galliano, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Stéphane Grappelli, Toots Thielemans, Robert Wyatt, Klaus Doldinger, Buddy Guy, Karin Krog, Carla Bley, Larry Coryell, Mike Mantler and Joachim Kühn, and within the progressive rock band Focus.
Biography
Catherine came from a musical family where his grandfather was first violinist in the London Symphony Orchestra, and he early evolved an ear for music. When he picked up the guitar after listening to the guitar of George Brassens, he began listening to jazz from this period. Soon he got the opportunity to play with some of those musicians when performing in Belgium, where he was residing at the time. Catherine has been at the forefront on the European jazz scene from the 1960s, and he got to work with artists like Lou Bennett, Billy Brooks, Edgar Bateman, John Lee, Gerry Brown, Jean-Luc Ponty, Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, Charlie Mariano, Kenny Drew and Tom Harrell, in addition to the those mentioned above. His unique approach and sound, his dedication to music and, above all, the highly emotional lyricism of expression in his playing and in his music, have been important and influential.

Dutch baby pancake
A Dutch baby pancake, sometimes called a German pancake, a Bismarck, or a Dutch puff, is a sweet popover that is normally served for breakfast. It is derived from the German Pfannkuchen. It is made with eggs, flour, sugar and milk, and usually seasoned with vanilla and cinnamon, although occasionally fruit or another flavoring is also added. It is baked in a cast iron or metal pan and falls soon after being removed from the oven. It is generally served with fresh squeezed lemon, butter, and powdered sugar, fruit toppings or syrup. A basic batter incorporates 1/3 cup flour and 1/3 cup liquid per egg.
According to Sunset magazine, Dutch babies were introduced in the first half of the 1900s at Manca's Cafe, a family-run restaurant that was located in Seattle, Washington and that was owned by Victor Manca. While these pancakes are derived from the German pancake dish, it is said that the name Dutch baby was coined by one of Victor Manca's daughters. In 1942, Manca's Cafe owned the trademark for Dutch babies, although the cafe later closed in the 1950s.

In this movie filmed in a warehouse on the outskirts of Eindhoven, the ringing of an alarm clock triggers a chain of events that opens umbrellas, spins paper windmills, starts a fire and releases a set of parachuting toy animals. Dutch design studio HEYHEYHEY originally constructed the machine, named Melvin, during Dutch Design Week 2010 but reassembled this improved version a year later. In this movie filmed in a warehouse on the outskirts of Eindhoven, the ringing of an alarm clock triggers a chain of events that opens umbrellas, spins paper windmills, starts a fire and releases a set of parachuting toy animals. Dutch design studio HEYHEYHEY originally constructed the machine, named Melvin, during Dutch Design Week 2010 but reassembled this improved version a year later. Still shocked and excited from last night, it's an honor for us to show you this absolutely MINDBLOWING TITLES made for OFFF by PostPanic.
Thank you so much to PostPanic, and specially to Mischa Rozema, Ania Markham and Si Scott, simply epic!!!
Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
Says Ania Markham, Executive Producer at PostPanic:
“The images created by the crew of people working on the titles has been unbelievable, with nationalities represented including Dutch, Czech, English, American, Polish, German, Swedish and Belgian. It’s been a great opportunity for all of us to work together on a non-commercial project we’re passionate about and we’re so proud of the combined effort and final result.”
DIRECTORS NOTES (Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully,

More and more film festivals come to honor Don Askarian with retrospectives. Serious TV-stations like ARD, WDR, ZDF, Channel 4, Arte, but also Belgian, Greek, Swiss, Slovakian, Armenian etc. TV Channels are constant co-producers and buyers of all his films. The films of Don Askarian were sold and broadcasted world wide about 100 times. Don Askarian, honored with a Harvard Film Archive retrospective, is considered the greatest Armenian filmmaker (but he is Russian-German- Dutch too). In 2004 he received Golden Camera Award for Life Achievement at Int. ART Film Festival, Slovakia. It turns out to be clearer what Hans-Werner Dannowski, the president of Interfilm, meant in 1992: "Time will pass until we recognize that Don Askarian is one of the most important filmmakers of our times. Peter Zumthor was named as the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal for architecture 2012 and here's an interview Dezeen filmed with him in the summer of 2011, in which he told us "I'm a passionate architect and I think it's a beautiful profession."
Speaking at the opening of his Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London, Zumthor said, "I do not work for money; I'm not going for commercial projects. I go for projects where I can put my heart into it and which I think are worthwhile."
He also told us how he started out in his father's cabinet-making workshop, went to art school and "slowly, slowly" became an architect. "Now maybe soon I’ll become a landscape architect too," he added. The pavilion featured a black walled garden framing a strip of wild planting by Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf.
Zumthor, who was also awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2009, will be presented with the Royal Gold Medal for architecture in a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London on 6 February 2013.

Tessel is a kinetic installation investigating the perception of sound and space.
Its name is derived from "tessellation", a term applied to the geometric subdivision of a surface into plane units, also known as "tiling". It also describes a software technique that allows calculation of renderings through the subdivision of surfaces into polygons. The term has its origin in the Latin word ‘tessella’, describing the square tiles used to make mosaics.
Tessellation has been applied throughout history from ancient to modern times, from two to n-dimensional configurations and merges science and art through mathematics. Here Tessel is based on the ‘pinwheel pattern’, a non-periodic tiling coined by mathematicians Charles Radin and John Conway, which allows the creation of an infinitely complex geometry constructed with a simple single "seed": a right triangle. Here, the pinwheel pattern is transformed, folded and transposed to the third dimension.
The installation is constituted of a suspended and articulated topography of 4 x 2 m, subdivided into forty triangular mirrors. Tessel is a kinetic installation investigating the perception of sound and space.
Its name is derived from "tessellation", a term applied to the geometric subdivision of a surface into plane units, also known as "tiling". It also describes a software technique that allows calculation of renderings through the subdivision of surfaces into polygons. The term has its origin in the Latin word ‘tessella’, describing the square tiles used to make mosaics.
Tessellation has been applied throughout history from ancient to modern times, from two to n-dimensional configurations and merges science and art through mathematics. Here Tessel is based on the ‘pinwheel pattern’, a non-periodic tiling coined by mathematicians Charles Radin and John Conway, which allows the creation of an infinitely complex geometry constructed with a simple single "seed": a right triangle. Here, the pinwheel pattern is transformed, folded and transposed to the third dimension.
The installation is constituted of a suspended and articulated topography of 4 x 2 m, subdivided into forty triangular mirrors. PHILIP CATHERINE - Biographie
Depuis les années '60 Philip Catherine a été une figure importante de la scène du jazz européen. Sa collaboration avec des grands artistes comme Charles Mingus, Chet Baker, Stéphane Grappelli, Dexter Gordon, Larry Coryell, Tom Harrell, NHOP, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns, son style et sonorité uniques, son engagement musical, ont été importants et d'une influence incontestable sur le jazz contemporain européen.
Né à Londres en 1942 d'une mère anglaise et d'un père belge, dans une famille de musiciens (son grand-père était premier violon du London Symphony Orchestra), Philip Catherine a pu développer son oreille musicale déjà très tôt. A quatorze ans, il entend la guitare de Brassens et découvre aussi Django Reinhardt : c'est le coup de foudre.
Il se met à écouter tous les grands musiciens de jazz de l'époque, les rencontre et puis très vite accompagne ceux qui passent par Bruxelles, où sa famille s' est installée.
A 18 ans, il tourne déjà en Europe avec le trio de Lou Bennett. En même temps, il entreprend des études de Sciences Economiques à l'Université de Louvain. Après son service militaire en 1971, Jean-Luc Ponty l'engage dans son quintet. En 1971 il enregistre un premier album sous son propre nom : "Streams", suivi en 1974-75 par "September Man" et "Guitars". Les amateurs de jazz à travers le monde découvrent non seulement un guitariste virtuose mais aussi un compositeur talentueux. Citons par exemple des thèmes devenus célèbres comme "Home comings" ou "Nairam".
Philip Catherine a joué dans les salles de concerts les plus prestigieuses : de la Philharmonique de Berlin au Carnegie Hall de New York, du Concertgebouw d' Amsterdam à l' Olympia et la Salle Pleyel à Paris, au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. Il ne dédaigne pas pour autant les clubs de jazz qu'il affectionne pour l'intimité qui s'y crée avec le public.
Tout en tournant avec ses propres groupes, il a également accompagné les géants du jazz comme Charlie Mingus, Benny Goodman, Toots Thielemans, Stéphane Grappelli, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Mariano, et surtout Chet Baker qui lui a tant apporté.
Philip Catherine a reçu de nombreux prix, parmi lesquels "The most Promising Duo, Record Jazz Award Winners" en 1977 aux USA et "Artists of the Year" 1978 de la Deutsche Phono Akademie, pour ses duos avec Larry Coryell. Fin '88 il reçut le prix "Saxe" décerné à l'unanimité par l'Association belge des Critiques de Jazz pour son album "Transparence" . En juillet 1990, il reçoit le "Bird Prize", en compagnie de Stan Getz, au Northsea Jazz Festival à Den Haag, et en '95 le "Django D'Or" de la Sabam. En juin 98 il reçoit à Paris le Django D' Or à Paris comme "Meilleur musicien européen de Jazz". En Belgique le ZAMU "Lifetime Achievement Award" en 2001 et "Best Musician" en 2002. En novembre 2002 il a reçu le titre "Maestro Honoris Causa" de la Fondation Conservatoire d' Anvers.
Alternant plusieurs formules, Solo, Duo, Trio et Quartet, Philip Catherine envoûte l' auditeur par ses compositions d' un lyrisme naturel, où le swing reste l' ingrédient essentiel. Guitariste virtuose, il ne cède pas à la facilité de mélopées gratuites. Les différents formations lui donnent toute la liberté pour ses improvisations, allant d' un groove irrésistible et une sonorité saturée très rock à ces envolées lyriques et intenses dont il est un maître.
En '97 Philip Catherine signe chez Dreyfus Records. Un premier album pour ce label : "Philip Catherine-live", est salué par la presse comme un des ses meilleurs albums depuis des années : 4½ étoiles dans "Down Beat" ; "meilleur album de l' Année" dans "Jazz Nu", etc...
"Guitar Groove" ('98) - avec Jim Beard, Alfonso Johnson et Rodney Holmes -, est un des rares CD' s européens à entrer dans le Top 20 Gavin Jazz Chart aux USA, et d'y rester plus d' un mois! On y trouve 12 compositions et une très belle version de "Stardust".
L' album "Blue Prince" (2000), à reçu le "CHOC de l' année" dans Jazzman, et a été élu parmi les meilleurs albums de l' année dans de nombreux journaux et magazines internationaux.
"Summer Night" (2002, Dreyfus) - en formule trio & quartet - contient six nouvelles compositions et des standards soigneusement choisis. L' album démontre une fois de plus que Philip Catherine est un des grands guitaristes de notre temps et un compositeur hors pair.
Le succès de ses concerts avec orchestre de chambre ainsi qu?avec quelques-uns des meilleurs big bands européens a révélé que ses compositions se prêtent aussi particulièrement bien à des arrangements pour ensembles plus larges. The term has its origin in the Latin word ‘tessella’, describing the square tiles used to make mosaics. Still shocked and excited from last night, it's an honor for us to show you this absolutely MINDBLOWING TITLES made for OFFF by PostPanic.
Thank you so much to PostPanic, and specially to Mischa Rozema, Ania Markham and Si Scott, simply epic!!!
Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
Says Ania Markham, Executive Producer at PostPanic:
“The images created by the crew of people working on the titles has been unbelievable, with nationalities represented including Dutch, Czech, English, American, Polish, German, Swedish and Belgian. It’s been a great opportunity for all of us to work together on a non-commercial project we’re passionate about and we’re so proud of the combined effort and final result.”
DIRECTORS NOTES (Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully,

Peter Zumthor was named as the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal for architecture 2012 and here's an interview Dezeen filmed with him in the summer of 2011, in which he told us "I'm a passionate architect and I think it's a beautiful profession."
Speaking at the opening of his Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London, Zumthor said, "I do not work for money; I'm not going for commercial projects. I go for projects where I can put my heart into it and which I think are worthwhile."
He also told us how he started out in his father's cabinet-making workshop, went to art school and "slowly, slowly" became an architect. "Now maybe soon I’ll become a landscape architect too," he added. The pavilion featured a black walled garden framing a strip of wild planting by Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf.
Zumthor, who was also awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2009, will be presented with the Royal Gold Medal for architecture in a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London on 6 February 2013.

Tessel is a kinetic installation investigating the perception of sound and space.
Its name is derived from "tessellation", a term applied to the geometric subdivision of a surface into plane units, also known as "tiling". It also describes a software technique that allows calculation of renderings through the subdivision of surfaces into polygons. The term has its origin in the Latin word ‘tessella’, describing the square tiles used to make mosaics.
Tessellation has been applied throughout history from ancient to modern times, from two to n-dimensional configurations and merges science and art through mathematics. Here Tessel is based on the ‘pinwheel pattern’, a non-periodic tiling coined by mathematicians Charles Radin and John Conway, which allows the creation of an infinitely complex geometry constructed with a simple single "seed": a right triangle. Here, the pinwheel pattern is transformed, folded and transposed to the third dimension.
The installation is constituted of a suspended and articulated topography of 4 x 2 m, subdivided into forty triangular mirrors. Twelve triangles are fitted with motors and eight triangles are equipped with audio transducers, which transform the surface into a dynamic sonic space. A dialogue between space and sound is created as the surface slowly modifies its shape, our perception of it altered through continuously changing light and sound reflection.
The project inscribes itself within the art historical continuum, from Victor Vasarely’s optical art to Buckminster Fuller’s synergetics, while continuing the quest for processual beauty in the numeric realm.

PHILIP CATHERINE - Biographie
Depuis les années '60 Philip Catherine a été une figure importante de la scène du jazz européen. Sa collaboration avec des grands artistes comme Charles Mingus, Chet Baker, Stéphane Grappelli, Dexter Gordon, Larry Coryell, Tom Harrell, NHOP, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns, son style et sonorité uniques, son engagement musical, ont été importants et d'une influence incontestable sur le jazz contemporain européen.
Né à Londres en 1942 d'une mère anglaise et d'un père belge, dans une famille de musiciens (son grand-père était premier violon du London Symphony Orchestra), Philip Catherine a pu développer son oreille musicale déjà très tôt. A quatorze ans, il entend la guitare de Brassens et découvre aussi Django Reinhardt : c'est le coup de foudre.
Il se met à écouter tous les grands musiciens de jazz de l'époque, les rencontre et puis très vite accompagne ceux qui passent par Bruxelles, où sa famille s' est installée.
A 18 ans, il tourne déjà en Europe avec le trio de Lou Bennett. En même temps, il entreprend des études de Sciences Economiques à l'Université de Louvain. Après son service militaire en 1971, Jean-Luc Ponty l'engage dans son quintet. En 1971 il enregistre un premier album sous son propre nom : "Streams", suivi en 1974-75 par "September Man" et "Guitars". Les amateurs de jazz à travers le monde découvrent non seulement un guitariste virtuose mais aussi un compositeur talentueux. Citons par exemple des thèmes devenus célèbres comme "Home comings" ou "Nairam".
Philip Catherine a joué dans les salles de concerts les plus prestigieuses : de la Philharmonique de Berlin au Carnegie Hall de New York, du Concertgebouw d' Amsterdam à l' Olympia et la Salle Pleyel à Paris, au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. Il ne dédaigne pas pour autant les clubs de jazz qu'il affectionne pour l'intimité qui s'y crée avec le public.
Tout en tournant avec ses propres groupes, il a également accompagné les géants du jazz comme Charlie Mingus, Benny Goodman, Toots Thielemans, Stéphane Grappelli, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Mariano, et surtout Chet Baker qui lui a tant apporté.
Philip Catherine a reçu de nombreux prix, parmi lesquels "The most Promising Duo, Record Jazz Award Winners" en 1977 aux USA et "Artists of the Year" 1978 de la Deutsche Phono Akademie, pour ses duos avec Larry Coryell. Fin '88 il reçut le prix "Saxe" décerné à l'unanimité par l'Association belge des Critiques de Jazz pour son album "Transparence" . En juillet 1990, il reçoit le "Bird Prize", en compagnie de Stan Getz, au Northsea Jazz Festival à Den Haag, et en '95 le "Django D'Or" de la Sabam. En juin 98 il reçoit à Paris le Django D' Or à Paris comme "Meilleur musicien européen de Jazz". En Belgique le ZAMU "Lifetime Achievement Award" en 2001 et "Best Musician" en 2002. En novembre 2002 il a reçu le titre "Maestro Honoris Causa" de la Fondation Conservatoire d' Anvers.
Alternant plusieurs formules, Solo, Duo, Trio et Quartet, Philip Catherine envoûte l' auditeur par ses compositions d' un lyrisme naturel, où le swing reste l' ingrédient essentiel. Guitariste virtuose, il ne cède pas à la facilité de mélopées gratuites. Les différents formations lui donnent toute la liberté pour ses improvisations, allant d' un groove irrésistible et une sonorité saturée très rock à ces envolées lyriques et intenses dont il est un maître.
En '97 Philip Catherine signe chez Dreyfus Records. Un premier album pour ce label : "Philip Catherine-live", est salué par la presse comme un des ses meilleurs albums depuis des années : 4½ étoiles dans "Down Beat" ; "meilleur album de l' Année" dans "Jazz Nu", etc...
"Guitar Groove" ('98) - avec Jim Beard, Alfonso Johnson et Rodney Holmes -, est un des rares CD' s européens à entrer dans le Top 20 Gavin Jazz Chart aux USA, et d'y rester plus d' un mois! On y trouve 12 compositions et une très belle version de "Stardust".
L' album "Blue Prince" (2000), à reçu le "CHOC de l' année" dans Jazzman, et a été élu parmi les meilleurs albums de l' année dans de nombreux journaux et magazines internationaux.
"Summer Night" (2002, Dreyfus) - en formule trio & quartet - contient six nouvelles compositions et des standards soigneusement choisis. L' album démontre une fois de plus que Philip Catherine est un des grands guitaristes de notre temps et un compositeur hors pair.
Le succès de ses concerts avec orchestre de chambre ainsi qu?avec quelques-uns des meilleurs big bands européens a révélé que ses compositions se prêtent aussi particulièrement bien à des arrangements pour ensembles plus larges. Et en 2005 Philip Catherine enregistre sa musique avec le Brussels Jazz Orchestra (le seul big band Européen à figurer dans le Downbeat Critics Poll 2004) sur l?album « Meeting Colours » (Dreyfus Jazz).

Sa collaboration avec des grands artistes comme Charles Mingus, Chet Baker, Stéphane Grappelli, Dexter Gordon, Larry Coryell, Tom Harrell, NHOP, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns, son style et sonorité uniques, son engagement musical, ont été importants et d'une influence incontestable sur le jazz contemporain européen.
Né à Londres en 1942 d'une mère anglaise et d'un père belge, dans une famille de musiciens (son grand-père était premier violon du London Symphony Orchestra), Philip Catherine a pu développer son oreille musicale déjà très tôt. A quatorze ans, il entend la guitare de Brassens et découvre aussi Django Reinhardt : c'est le coup de foudre.
Il se met à écouter tous les grands musiciens de jazz de l'époque, les rencontre et puis très vite accompagne ceux qui passent par Bruxelles, où sa famille s' est installée.
A 18 ans, il tourne déjà en Europe avec le trio de Lou Bennett. En même temps, il entreprend des études de Sciences Economiques à l'Université de Louvain. Après son service militaire en 1971, Jean-Luc Ponty l'engage dans son quintet. En 1971 il enregistre un premier album sous son propre nom : "Streams", suivi en 1974-75 par "September Man" et "Guitars". Les amateurs de jazz à travers le monde découvrent non seulement un guitariste virtuose mais aussi un compositeur talentueux. Citons par exemple des thèmes devenus célèbres comme "Home comings" ou "Nairam".
Philip Catherine a joué dans les salles de concerts les plus prestigieuses : de la Philharmonique de Berlin au Carnegie Hall de New York, du Concertgebouw d' Amsterdam à l' Olympia et la Salle Pleyel à Paris, au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. Il ne dédaigne pas pour autant les clubs de jazz qu'il affectionne pour l'intimité qui s'y crée avec le public.
Tout en tournant avec ses propres groupes, il a également accompagné les géants du jazz comme Charlie Mingus, Benny Goodman, Toots Thielemans, Stéphane Grappelli, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Mariano, et surtout Chet Baker qui lui a tant apporté.
Philip Catherine a reçu de nombreux prix, parmi lesquels "The most Promising Duo, Record Jazz Award Winners" en 1977 aux USA et "Artists of the Year" 1978 de la Deutsche Phono Akademie, pour ses duos avec Larry Coryell. Fin '88 il reçut le prix "Saxe" décerné à l'unanimité par l'Association belge des Critiques de Jazz pour son album "Transparence" . En juillet 1990, il reçoit le "Bird Prize", en compagnie de Stan Getz, au Northsea Jazz Festival à Den Haag, et en '95 le "Django D'Or" de la Sabam. En juin 98 il reçoit à Paris le Django D' Or à Paris comme "Meilleur musicien européen de Jazz". En Belgique le ZAMU "Lifetime Achievement Award" en 2001 et "Best Musician" en 2002. En novembre 2002 il a reçu le titre "Maestro Honoris Causa" de la Fondation Conservatoire d' Anvers.
Alternant plusieurs formules, Solo, Duo, Trio et Quartet, Philip Catherine envoûte l' auditeur par ses compositions d' un lyrisme naturel, où le swing reste l' ingrédient essentiel. Guitariste virtuose, il ne cède pas à la facilité de mélopées gratuites. Les différents formations lui donnent toute la liberté pour ses improvisations, allant d' un groove irrésistible et une sonorité saturée très rock à ces envolées lyriques et intenses dont il est un maître.
En '97 Philip Catherine signe chez Dreyfus Records. Un premier album pour ce label : "Philip Catherine-live", est salué par la presse comme un des ses meilleurs albums depuis des années : 4½ étoiles dans "Down Beat" ; "meilleur album de l' Année" dans "Jazz Nu", etc...
"Guitar Groove" ('98) - avec Jim Beard, Alfonso Johnson et Rodney Holmes -, est un des rares CD' s européens à entrer dans le Top 20 Gavin Jazz Chart aux USA, et d'y rester plus d' un mois! On y trouve 12 compositions et une très belle version de "Stardust".
L' album "Blue Prince" (2000), à reçu le "CHOC de l' année" dans Jazzman, et a été élu parmi les meilleurs albums de l' année dans de nombreux journaux et magazines internationaux.
"Summer Night" (2002, Dreyfus) - en formule trio & quartet - contient six nouvelles compositions et des standards soigneusement choisis. L' album démontre une fois de plus que Philip Catherine est un des grands guitaristes de notre temps et un compositeur hors pair.
Le succès de ses concerts avec orchestre de chambre ainsi qu?avec quelques-uns des meilleurs big bands européens a révélé que ses compositions se prêtent aussi particulièrement bien à des arrangements pour ensembles plus larges. Et en 2005 Philip Catherine enregistre sa musique avec le Brussels Jazz Orchestra (le seul big band Européen à figurer dans le Downbeat Critics Poll 2004) sur l?album « Meeting Colours » (Dreyfus Jazz).
