Editorial Reviews

Mark Prindle is a New York resident best known for his influential and highly-regarded website 'Mark's Record Reviews' which he founded in 1996 and continues to run.

Less well known is the man's music - and this release, spanning a decade's worth of solo compositions from 1998-2007, is a small step towards drawing some much-needed attention to his catalogue.

Mirroring his irreverent, stream-of-consciousness writing style, his music breaks with all conventions. Relentlessly inventive guitar melodies are, depending on opinion, either ruined or enhanced by sub lo-fi recording, puerile lyrics, premature cut-offs, walls of distortion, and many other radio play-threatening tactics which are often utilised in a single song.

Eight selections each from his five solo albums are included and, bearing in mind his solo albums frequently exceed 60 tracks, this compilation serves only as a brief introduction to his output.

Format: Audio CD
Previously, Mark Prindle had released 5 solo albums that could only be ordered directly from him. This is the first time it's easy to own his work. The record label compiled this from those albums. He is a brilliant guitarist, is extremely funny and can pump out some good hard rocking songs. The issue that some people have is that it's low-fi with variable sound quality and an obvious drum machine.

It would have been easy to make a Prindle compilation album full of wall to wall brilliance but alas this isn't it. The compiler's first mistake was to take an equal number of tracks from each album. The "Only The Good Die Young" album has terrible sound quality and should have been kept to a minimum on this compilation.

The other issue is the track selection. At times, truly excellent tracks like "ANGST", "NOTES", and "Disco Jaws" were selected. At other times, it is baffling. From Mark's best album "Stop, Drop, and Roll", which contains parodies of just about every rock style ever, a filler (not bad) track "Dreary Old Lonesome Potato" was picked over dozens of truly great tracks. And some of Mark's best tracks are completely missing. For example, there is near universal agreement that "XYLODARK" was one of the best tracks off his last album, but it's missing from this compilation.

If you enjoy parody, comedy or good hard-rocking guitar-driven songs, I would highly recommend this compilation especially given the price. Even with my complaints, it is a good album - I was just disappointed because it could have been better.

These songs may "sound" terrible, but in the tradition of comedic shock-joke lo-fi recordings from Ween and TISM, Mark Prindle creates a masterpiece of uncommon and unpredictable sounds. The best CD ever released by an unemployed genius musical journalist.
