How did Colonel Gaddafi get away with such evil for so long?
Since Muammar Gaddafi's ignominious death at the hands of a rebel mob in October 2011 much has been written and said about him. But now a new film, with unprecedented access to those close to Gaddafi, provides a comprehensive study of Libya's brutal and contradictory long-time leader.
Ali Aujali, Gaddafi's former ambassador to the United States, is an exceptionally charming man.
He is also something of a magician. He began his career in the Libyan diplomatic service a couple of years after Gaddafi seized power in 1969.
In a series of postings from London to Latin America, he explained away the excesses of the Gaddafi regime. So I was rather surprised to sit with Mr Aujali surrounded by the staggeringly ornate Libyan embassy in Washington and hear him tear the colonel to pieces.
Mr Aujali defected to the rebels in February 2011 and became their ambassador to the United States.
According to him, there was literally nothing good about the man whose regime he had served most of his adult life.
Secret after secret spilled out. We checked as many of his claims as we could.
There were anecdotes we could not follow up, such as his claim that a young man had been tied to two cars and ripped in half after complaining that Gaddafi had had sex with his wife.
But there were other claims we could check.
One was that on 22 December 1992, almost four years to the day after Pan Am 103 was blown up over Lockerbie, a Libyan Arab Airlines 727 was shot down on Gaddafi's orders.
A total of 157 people - Libyans and foreigners - had died.
Its flight number, curiously, was 1103.
After Gaddafi fell, the British wife of one of the victims tried to get the new Libyan government to open an enquiry.
Reporters pieced together statements made by pilots of military jets in the area, air traffic controllers and airline employees.
But what was important about Mr Aujali's statement to us was that it was the first time a true insider had spoken out.
Was he sure? "100%," he said.
A bomb with a timer had been placed on board the plane. When it failed to detonate, Gaddafi ordered the plane to be knocked out of the sky, near Tripoli airport.
Why?
Mr Aujali said his motive had been to show the West - via Libya's state-controlled media - how international sanctions imposed after Lockerbie were hurting ordinary Libyans.
Unable to buy spare parts, the story went, Libyan Arab Airlines could not fly its planes safely. The dead were victims of what Gaddafi liked to represent to visitors as Western terrorism.
The official explanation varied. Eventually the regime jailed the pilot of a Libyan Air Force MiG and his instructor, claiming they had collided with the plane.
The instructor, Majid Tayari, agreed to meet us in a Tripoli hotel. There was no collision, he insisted. He saw part of the tail of the 727 hurtling towards him.
Something hit the MiG from underneath, then fire broke out. Both pilots ejected. According to him the 727 had been hit first.
Pieces of fuselage rained down at very high speed and punctured the skin of the MiG.
Libyan Arab Airlines' air safety manager in 1992, Mahmud Tekalli, also disputes that a mid-air collision was the cause. He believes flight 1103 was deliberately destroyed.
We went to the crash site and then negotiated our way past the militia guarding Tripoli airport.
A back road runs past elderly planes.
Off the road we found the wreckage of Flight 1103 in eerily good condition, protected by the desert climate, ready to lay bare its secrets to crash investigators.
Mr Aujali was not the only insider we met on our travels.
On a private island in the Pacific Ocean, we talked to Lutz Kayser, a German rocket designer who worked for Gaddafi in the 1980s.
Mr Kayser says: "He was a very nice, modest person and I had the impression he was hiding his weakness behind a facade."
Mr Kayser's wife, Susanne, says Gaddafi was "charming and could charm the birds out of the trees" but she said he later became disillusioned when he failed to set up a "utopia" in Libya.
In Havana we interviewed Frank Terpil, an American fugitive from justice who ran a "Murder Incorporated" operation for Gaddafi in the 1970s, killing Libyan dissidents abroad.
Mr Terpil said: "Gaddafi thought that anybody who was a dissident was going to be eliminated. He had contracts out on a bunch of people in London."
And after pursuing him for months, we finally reached Urs Tinner, a Swiss engineer who worked for Abdul Qadeer Khan, once called the most dangerous man in the world.
Mr Khan developed nuclear weapons for Pakistan and later offered nuclear technology to any country with the money to pay. Gaddafi was his most lucrative client.
Mr Tinner says he was not aware Mr Khan was a "nuclear proliferator" but when he realised he tipped off the CIA, who intercepted a ship with final parts for a centrifuge.
We also unearthed evidence of Gaddafi's sexual abuse of young girls.

DemocracyNow.org - After a lightning fast advance by opposition fighters who poured in Tripoli with surprising ease, much of the city appears to be under rebel control although heavy fighting is underway in many areas. Al Jazeera reports that clashes are continuing in the capital, with the rebels facing off with tanks near Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi's compound. Three of Gaddafi's sons have reportedly been taken into rebel custody and the presidential guard has surrendered. Democracy Now! speaks with Robin Waudo, an International Red Cross spokesperson based in Tripoli, who is part of a small team able to come to their office amid fighting and distribute medical aid for as many as 5,000 people who have reportedly been wounded. Also interviewed is Khaled Mattawa, an acclaimed Libyan poet and scholar who just returned from Libya.

An extremist group pledging loyalty to the Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack on a five-star hotel in Libya that led to at least nine deaths.
Nine people, including five foreigners, were killed Tuesday during an attack on a Tripoli hotel by a group calling itself Islamic State - Tripoli Province. The attack began at around 9am when three security guards were killed as a car bomb was detonated on the main street in front of the Corinthia Hotel.
Several heavily armed gunmen then gained entry to the luxury hotel and opened fire on fleeing guests. Forces loyal to the Libyan government arrived at the scene moments later.
According to reports, at least one assailant died after an explosion, but it is not known whether he detonated a suicide vest or a grenade.
A US citizen and a French national were among the five foreigners killed in the assault, one of the worst attacks targeting foreigners since the downfall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Eastern Libya Declares Autonomous Government, Tripoli Rejects Separate Barqa State
By ESAM MOHAMED 10/24/13 0
TRIPOLI, Libya -- TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — The leaders of a movement for self-rule in oil-rich eastern Libyan unilaterally announced Thursday the formation of a shadow government, the latest challenge to the weakened central authority.
The announcement came several months after the movement, backed by some militias and local tribes, declared the eastern half of Libya to be an autonomous state, named Barqa, claiming broad self-rule powers and control over resources.
The central government in Tripoli had rejected the declaration. It had no immediate comments on Thursday.
Advocates of the self-rule in the east, who long has complained about discrimination by the government in the capital Tripoli, have been pushing for the reviving the system maintained under King Idris in 1951. Libya then was divided into three states, with Cyrenaica — or Barqa, as it was called in Arabic — encompassing the eastern half of the country.
Opponents fear a declaration of autonomy could be the first step toward the outright division of the country, particularly with the turmoil that struck in the aftermath of the fall of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
The tension between the central government and eastern militias and tribal leaders has already disrupted the exports of oil. Eastern militias earlier seized control of oil exporting terminals, sending production plunging from 1.4 million barrels a day to around 600,000, robbing the country of its main revenue source.
Abd-Rabbo al-Barassi, the head of the newly declared Barqa government, said the aim is to improve distribution of resources and undermine the hold of the centralized system that has discriminated against their region.
"The aim of the regional government is to share resources in a better fashion, and to end the centralized system adopted by the authorities in Tripoli," al-Barassi said at a news conference in the northeastern town of Ajdabiya.
He dismissed accusations that the movement's leaders are only seeking to take control of the region's oil resources. "We only want Barqa's share according to the 1951 constitution," he said.
The new government is made up of 24 posts, which don't include the defense or foreign affairs portfolios, he said. Al-Barassi said the region will encompass four provinces, including Benghazi, Tobruk, Ajdabiya and Jebel Akhdar.
Since Gadhafi's ouster following months of civil war, Libya has been beset by lawlessness as the numerous armed men who fought against the longtime leader's forces formed into independent militias now vying for power and allying with competing politicians.
"The security file will be priority," Al-Barassi said. "It is a thorny issue leading to the chaos of illegitimate militias."
It is not clear how much support the new autonomous government will have in the country's east, though the movement's leaders have seized control of important resources. Officials in the central government have threatened to use military action against any illegal or unauthorized shipment of oils.
Meanwhile, a Libyan court on Thursday referred Gadhafi's son and more than 30 others to trial before a higher tribunal on charges ranging from murder to treason during the 2011 uprising, a senior prosecutor said.
Prosecutor Al-Seddik al-Sur said the Tripoli court also decided to appoint defense lawyers for Gadhafi's son, Seif al-Islam, and the late dictator's intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senoussi. He did not announce a date for the trial before the Criminal Court.

Libya's current rulers along with local rebels ousted despot leader
Muammar Qaddafi from his 4-decade rule last year in a national uprising
against his regime. Now, they have also taken him out of school
curricula all over the country.
During the Qaddafi-era, it was mandatory for schools to display a
picture of their leader and his unique political and social ideologies
were fundamentals of school textbooks.
The Green Book, which contained such ideologies, included the political
concept of "Jamahiriya" or "Masses". Qaddafi imagined states with
non-existent political parties, claiming that it was complete democracy
which encouraged all Libyans to participate in local committees. It was
apparent that reality contradicted the concept itself.
Certain subjects like history had to be re-written, while others
remained as they were, but one subject had to be eliminated completely.
'Jamahiriya education and political culture' taught young children to
glorify Qaddafi as a character and as a political leader.
Suleiman Khoja, deputy education minister, said that subject has now
been replaced with National education which highlights the values of
the Feb. 17 revolution such as human rights, political parties and
issues of a new Libya.
In the April 15 School in the capital of Tripoli, the only remaining
evidence of Qaddafi is a picture which is being used as a doormat.
The school's name refers to the U.S. airstrike on Qaddafi's compound in
1986. But head teacher Najiba al-Azzabi said the school has applied to
change the name to Aug. 20 to commemorate the day when anti-Qaddafi
forces charged the capital.
She said that the curriculum was very distorted during Qaddafi's rule,
and that history in particular should be a subject taught in complete
honesty because generations that come must learn of the past.
While many schools closed down during last year's unrest, those in
areas under Qaddafi's control remained open.
Students like 14-year-old Taaj Abdul Maheed and 12-year-old Hassan
Abdul Razzak are more motivated to attend classes now because they have
more freedom to learn and are no longer forced to participate in
singing the anthem or learn from the Green Book.
"Education is now better than it was before. Teachers now explain
things better. They weren't very motivated to teach us in the past,
because they had to teach us things which Muammar (Qaddafi) wanted them
to teach, which were all wrong. History was all wrong, and now they've
changed it and it's right," she said.
The current government has paid for student textbooks in a bid to
increase education expenditure. It also hopes to provide more student
grants and accommodation funds for university students.
Despite free education offered during the Qaddafi era which contributed
the country to having one of the highest literacy rates in Libya, many
still wished that more money was spent on education given the relative
wealth and low population of the country.

War planes from Libya's internationally recognized government attacked the last functioning airport in Tripoli, the capital controlled by a rival administration, on Monday, the latest in a string of tit-for-tat strikes. Rival governments and parliaments are battling for control of the North African country and its oil resources four years after the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. Thinni and the elected parliament have been confined to a rump state in the east since an armed faction seized Tripoli in the west over the summer, reinstating the previous assembly and setting up a rival administration.

STORYLINE:
Libyan revolutionary forces repelled an attack by Moammar Gadhafi loyalists on Sunday but faced fierce resistance from a valley separating them from the loyalist stronghold of Bani Walid, fighters said.
Explosions resounded across the area and smoke rose on the horizon as the two sides exchanged fire with rockets and anti-aircraft missiles.
Fighters said they made the push without orders from commanders on Sunday after forces loyal to the fugitive leader shelled revolutionary lines at the northern gate of the sprawling town.
NATO aircraft circled the area, but former rebels say there was no sign of airstrikes.
Later on Sunday, revolutionary fighters made a tactical withdrawal from Bani Walid, but were set to return.
One said: "We are inside. We cannot be secure, so we don''t know the area, there is no people to guide us where to go and what to do. So we take like four, five, six, ten kilometres in front, then we start back and we start the next day until we move them out of Bani Walid."
Meanwhile, in Wadi Dinar, some 14 kilometres (8 miles) away, on Sunday Libyan fighters were trying to clear the hills close to the road that revolutionary fighters use to travel to the front line.
It is thought the hills provide an ideal spot for Gadhafi loyalists to ambush revolutionary forces.
The two sides have clashed for days after former rebels made a push toward Bani Walid and Gadhafi''s hometown of Sirte to try to break weeks of stalemate and crush the dug-in fighters loyal to the fugitive leader.
Families streamed out of Sirte to escape the fighting.
Rebels searching vehicles found many assault rifles and pistols.
Some people volunteered the weapons; others were confiscated.
While Sirte would be a major symbolic prize, Bani Walid has proven particularly difficult for revolutionary forces.
The loyalists hold the strategic high ground along the ridges overlooking the desert valley called Wadi Zeitoun, which divides the town between northern and southern sections.
The terrain has made the town a historical holdout: In the early 20th century, Italian forces occupying Libya struggled to take Bani Walid.

The United Nations human rights office says it is ‘deeply disturbed’ by death sentences handed down by a Libyan court to a son of Colonel Gaddafi and eight officials from the deposed dictator’s regime.
Saif-al Islam Gaddafi had given evidence to the hearing by video link and was not in the courtroom in Tripoli to hear the verdict.
Since 2011, the late leader’s son has been held by a former rebel group in the mountainous Zintan region of the lawless country in which two governments are fighting for control. The group refuses to hand him over.
The legal representative of the defendants, including former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi and ex-prime minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi said there would be an appeal.
Lawyer Hussien al-Sherif described the court’s judgement as ‘very harsh’.
A total of 37 people were on trial including Saif al-Islam, sentenced over war crimes including the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution that ended his father’s rule.
Eight other ex-officials received life sentences and seven were given jail terms of 12 years each. Four defendants were acquitted and others got shorter jail terms.
Legal experts and rights advocates said the proceedings were tainted and politicised from the start.
New York-based Human Rights Watch said defence lawyers lacked full and timely access to case files and several had been unable to meet clients in private while two quit after receiving threats.
The UN human rights office also spoke out after the sentences.

Behind the scenes of 2011 Libya's bombing campaign. Hillary Clinton's close ally in his private emails to then Secretary of State have been leaked to the press. They reveal how the UK and France were struggling to get a larger piece of the Libyan cake. Britain is using intelligence to dictate the actions of both the Libyan rebels and the Gaddafi regime - one email said. Diplomats maintained contact with the embattled government to protect British positions in case the unrest didn't end in a change of power. Plus, they were in talks with Gaddafi's son Saif in case he takes over power from his father. The UK also teamed up with France - according to another email - in order to establish a semi-autonomous zone in the East, basically encouraging the country's split following Gaddafi's fall. The idea came from Nicolas Sarkozy's advisers. The reason - the brand-new Libyan government failed to appropriately reward French firms with contracts. But who's the source? Sidney Blumenthal - former aide to President Bill Clinton. He's said to be on the Clinton Foundation payroll. Blumenthal was also advised US firms who were seeking Libyan contracts. Hillary Clinton wanted to bring him to the State Department back in 2009, but President Obama's aides prevented the appointment. Rebel forces Pulled down Libyan Leader Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli back in 2011
hey were once sprawling palace compounds that were used to intimidate and strike fear into the hearts of Libyans.
Now the homes and residences of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi have been reduced to rubble - and even used as pet markets to sell birds and dogs.
Four years after the 2011 revolution that saw Colonel Gaddafi's hold on Libya crumbled, the once feared Bab al-Aziziya compound, situated in the capital city of Tripoli, resembles a wasteland.
During his rule, Libyans would be nervous just walking anywhere near the fortress-like seat of the Gaddafi regime.
The dictator ruled for almost 42 years, after he took control in a coup d'etat in 1969.
Following an uprising as part of the Arab Spring in 2011 and ensuing civil war, he was hounded out of Tripoli and killed by members of the National Transitional Council.
Speaking about life before the uprising, Tripoli taxi driver Hassan said people feared to go near the Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli.
'People were afraid even to look at the walls, for fear of being arrested,' he said.
All that remains of the palace, which had been hit in a 1986 US air strike before being pounded by NATO four years ago, are a few ruined buildings, the green flooring of Gaddafi's home and a dug-up network of underground tunnels.

The country that fought for freedom is falling back into factionalism and bloodshed
Tears rolled down Khadija’s cheeks as the 17-seater plane – the whirr of its propellers deafening in the cabin – began its descent into the capital of a country crippled by war. The hope she’d felt of a better future for Libya after the ousting of dictator Col Muammar Gaddafi had long soured into resentment and fear. Now she was flying back into her homeland from exile. An uncle had been killed and she needed to attend his funeral.
“It wasn’t meant to be like this,” she said. “We have lost our dignity. We fought Gaddafi so that we could speak freely. Now it’s the same as before, but with less security.”
Many of her countrymen agree with her. Since the end of the 2011 Nato-backed war that toppled Gaddafi, Libya has fragmented – with two rival governments and their allied armed gangs vying for power. Nascent democracy has been supplanted by a system of repression and fear. Militias have become the most powerful players in a country devoid of the rule of law, of a national army or a police force. Anyone opposing them, be they politician or civilian, is silenced – often at gunpoint.
In the new Libya, just as in the old, speaking out against those wielding power is enough see you threatened, or killed. There was, many admit, a “golden age” in the months immediately after the end of Gaddafi’s 40-year-rule. But it was not long before factionalism began to spin out of control. Now that brief, optimistic interregnum is spoken of nostalgically, as thought it were a distant era.
In fact it was only three years ago, in 2012, that Libyans rushed to the polls to vote for their first democratically elected government. Newspapers proliferated. Misrata, Libya’s merchant second city, had 23. In the conference halls of five-star hotels, wise men gathered to debate the finer details of the country’s new constitution. But when the business of governing began in earnest, things began to go wrong.
It had taken a war of eight months to remove a tyrant, but it soon became clear that the mentality of the people subjugated to his rule would need much longer to change. With no established social base for democracy, Libya’s new rulers resorted to the politics of old. Corruption became worse even than during Gaddafi’s regime, as every politician secured his seat with nepotism and patronage. “Every time a new prime minister arrived, he sacked the staff across departments and institutions and brought in his own people,” said Mohsen Derregia, the former head of the Libyan Investment Authority, the body managing the country’s $65 billion sovereign wealth fund. “In four years LIA had six chairmen. Barely had you learnt to do the job than you were moved on.”
Libya’s oil-rich economy began to founder. Under a succession of weak governments, and with few other job opportunities, fighting groups formed to oust Gaddafi refused to disband. Instead, each accused the other of secretly being Gaddafi loyalists, and gunfights broke out once again as they battled for control of key public facilities.
In Tripoli the fighting between militias from Misrata and the mountain town of Zintan, saw hundreds of people killed. Their fight for Tripoli’s international airport ended with the terminal burned to the ground. Rows of planes, some gutted by fire, others riddled with bullet holes and with bits of their wings broken off, stand abandoned on the closed runway, in silent testimony to the chaos.

People of Misurata, the third largest city of Libya, had nothing to start up a revolution but a great will; a will to end the tyranny of Gaddafi and the miseries that had befallen them throughout decades of his dictatorship. Armed with this will, when the wave of Arab Spring, reached them, they started their protests and demonstrations. The heavy handed response of the security forces could not quell their anger and the memories of their fallen comrades only further fueled their wrath. Soon they managed to take control of the city. Now they had to repel the heavily armed surge of the Gaddafi Army.
In this documentary and through never before seen footage and interviews with the freedom fighters, we see how ordinary citizens took up arms and managed to liberate their city. The liberation of Misurata later proved to be an important turning point in the fall of the Gaddafi Regime.
