Bosnia: Cradle of modern jihadism? BBC News
20 years ago in the civil war in Bosnia, hundreds of Arab jihadists came to join Bosnian Muslims fighting against their neighbours the Serbs and Croats. Grouped into secret fighting units in Central Bosnia, this was the first time in centuries Jihad had been fought against a Western, Christian enemy. Two decades later Bosnia is still reaping the consequences. In the past month ISIS declared the Ba

7 Facts about Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina (or Hercegovina) has been a part of the Yugoslavian Republic until civil war broke out in the early 90’s, leading to many years of genocide, ethnic cleansing and finally a NATO intervention. The name Bosnia comes from the river Bosna that flows in the region and Herzegovina used to be an Austrian duchy (Herzog in german).

The Bosnian War was an international armed conflict that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 6 April 1992[8][9][10] and 14 December 1995. The war involved several factions. The main belligerents were the forces of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and those of the self-proclaimed Bosnian Serb and Bosnian Croat entities within Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska and Herzeg-Bosnia, who were led and supplied by Serbia and Croatia respectively.[11][12][13]
The war came about as a result of the breakup of Yugoslavia. Following the Slovenian and Croatian secessions from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991, the multi-ethnic Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was inhabited by Muslim Bosniaks (44 percent), Orthodox Serbs (31 percent) and Catholic Croats (17 percent), passed a referendum for independence on 29 February 1992. This was rejected by the political representatives of the Bosnian Serbs, who had boycotted the referendum and established their own republic. Following Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of independence (which had gained international recognition), the Bosnian Serbs, supported by the Serbian government of Slobodan Milošević and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), mobilized their forces inside the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to secure Serbian territory, then war soon broke out across the country, accompanied by the ethnic cleansing of the Muslim Bosniak and Croat population, especially in eastern Bosnia and throughout the Republika Srpska.[14]
It was principally a territorial conflict, initially between the Serb forces mostly organized in the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) on the one side, and the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH) which was largely composed of Bosniaks, and the Croat forces in the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) on the other side. The Croats also aimed at securing parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina as Croatian.[15] The Serb and Croat political leadership agreed on a partition of Bosnia with the Karađorđevo and Graz agreements, resulting in the Croat forces turning against the ARBiH and the Croat-Bosniak war.[16] The war was characterized by bitter fighting, indiscriminate shelling of cities and towns, ethnic cleansing and systematic mass rape, mostly led by Serb and, to a lesser extent, Croat[17] forces. Events such as the Siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre would become iconic of the conflict.
The Serbs, although initially superior due to the vast amount of weapons and resources provided by the JNA, eventually lost momentum as the Bosniaks and Croats allied themselves against the Republika Srpska in 1994 with the creation of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina following the Washington agreement. After the Srebrenica and Markale massacres, NATO intervened in 1995 with Operation Deliberate Force targeting the positions of the Army of the Republika Srpska, which proved key in ending the war.[18][19] The war was brought to an end after the signing of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina in Paris on 14 December 1995. Peace negotiations were held in Dayton, Ohio, and were finalized on 21 December 1995. The accords are now known as the Dayton Agreement.[20] A 1995 report by the Central Intelligence Agency found that Bosnian Serb forces were responsible for 90% of the war crimes committed during the conflict.[21] As of early 2008, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia had convicted 45 Serbs, 12 Croats and 4 Bosniaks of war crimes in connection with the war in Bosnia.[22] The most recent figures suggest that around 100,000 people were killed during the war.[23][24] In addition, an estimated total of 20,000 to 50,000 women were raped,[25] and over 2.2 million people were displaced,[26] making it the most devastating conflict in Europe since the end of World War II.

http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode David takes us to the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina to discover Sarajevo’s sights, sounds, and tastes. Sarajevo is a bustling capital with several historical, cultural and gastronomic stops to experience.
David starts off in the city center where he meets up with his local guide Raza to begin the tour. The best place to start is the Eternal Flame, located in the city center. It has burned continuously since 1946 except during the Bosnian War 1992-1995. It is on display for everyone to see.
David and Raza then take a walk along Ferhadija, Sarajevo’s main pedestrian street that links the two different parts of the city – the 19th century buildings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Medieval district dating back to Ottoman occupation. In the mix there are also several communist-era buildings when Bosnia existed as a republic in the Social Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavia, for short).
At the point when Ferhadija Street meets the Ottoman quarter, there is line on the floor that shows the split. All along Ferhadija Street there are shops, restaurants, cafés, and banks. It is also where the Eternal Flame is located.
Before Raza and David head into Bascarsija (Ottoman district), they make a quick stop at the square of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. In Bascarsija they visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, which was built 1530. Afterwards, Raza shows David the different ways to drink a traditional Bosnian coffee at a local Kafana. After fueling up, David stops by Sebilj fountain to have a sip of water. Legend has it that anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Sarajevo, so we’ll see if David makes his way back one day to experience more of what to see and eat in Sarajevo!
Now time for a little souvenir shopping down Coppersmith Street. Raza shows David the most typical gift one could buy here – a copper coffee pot used to serve Bosnian coffee. All this walking around made them work up quite an appetite, so they head to a bakery to try some delicious pies (cheese, spinach, and meat). The pies are baked over a coal oven and are the perfect fast food. They are also very inexpensive.
Next thing David tries is cevapi (pronounced che-vap-ee), which is pretty much the unofficial national dish of the country. Day 2 takes David and Raza to see the city from a magnificent lookout point, Zuta Tabija, or “yellow fortress.” David recommends driving or taking a taxi there because the climb to the top is quite steep. From here you can see the center of the city and the rolling green hills in the background (in case you didn’t know, Bosnia is one of Europe’s most lush and verdant countries).
After quickly seeing Emperor’s Mosque, Raza takes David to see the exact spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, were assassinated on June 28, 1914. At the time David visited (2014) it was the 100th year anniversary of their untimely deaths. The assassination triggered the start of the First World War. After revisiting such a pivotal point in European history, David gets curious to see where all the bread he’s been eating comes from so Raza takes him to a nearby bakery, Pekara Alifakovac. They specialize in Somun bread, which is what is served with cevapi. This family-owned bakery churns out hundreds of Somun breads each day, and they have a pick-up window for customers on the go. It’s very hot inside but the experience was well worth it, especially since they allowed David to eat a piece of freshly baked bread.
Last but not least, David heads outside of the city center to visit one of the most culturally significant places in Bosnia, the Sarajevo Tunnel or Tunnel of Hope. Visitors can now see a portion of a tunnel that allowed Bosnians to smuggle in weapons and supplies during the Siege of Sarajevo (May 1992 through November 1995).
And there you have it, a brief intro about what to see and eat in Sarajevo. We hoped you liked it!

In the past month ISIS declared the Balkans the next front of Jihad - and in remote mountain villages extremists are flying the ISIS flag. Mark Urban returns to Bosnia and discovers how secular Bosnian society has been infiltrated by a militant Islamism which operates to this day.

Grouped into secret fighting units in Central Bosnia, this was the first time in centuries Jihad had been fought against a Western, Christian enemy. Two decades later Bosnia is still reaping the consequences. In the past month ISIS declared the Balkans the next front of Jihad - and in remote mountain villages extremists are flying the ISIS flag. Mark Urban returns to Bosnia and discovers how secular Bosnian society has been infiltrated by a militant Islamism which operates to this day.

In May, massive floods in Bosnia unearthed previously undiscovered mass graves from the 1992-95 Balkan conflict. The waters also moved potentially thousands of landmines from known locations to... well, nobody knows for sure.
VICE News traveled to northern Bosnia to tag along with the team in charge of de-mining the countryside, and met residents still reeling from the horrors of war.

In September 2011 a group of photographers and writers who had covered the war in Bosnia met and decided to come back to Sarajevo on April 6th, 2012, to commemorate the beginning of the war and re-engage with the country. A meeting called 'Sarajevo 2012' took place, in cooperation with Memory Module.
They also decided to make a photo book about the war.
Jon Jones (project photo editor), Gary Knight (project production in collaboration with photographer Ziyah Gafic) and Remy Ourdan (project text editor) took the project on with the intention of making a book to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the war. They pulled together the work of over 50 bosnian and foreign photographers and writers who all volunteered their material.
The hardback book contains 248 pages that includes the work of many of the leading photographers and writers of the time. It charts the course of the war from its beginning in April 1992 to the Dayton Peace Accord in December 1995.
The book will be launched during the Sarajevo Film Festival on July 11th, 2012.
The book will exist both in bosnian and in english. 250 copies of the book will be dispersed for free to libraries and academic institutions in Bosnia.
The contributors to the book include:
Odd Andersen, Darko Bandic, Yannis Behrakis, Nina Berman, Alexandra Boulat, Eric Bouvet, John F. Burns, Christophe Calais, Patrick Chauvel, Rachel Cobb, Steve Connors, Enrico Dagnino, Jerome Delay, Janine Di Giovanni, Amel Emric, Wade Goddard, Antoine Gyori, Benoit Gysembergh, Tom Haley, Jean Hatzfeld, Ron Haviv, Filip Horvat, Roger Hutchings, Morten Hvaal, Srdjan Ilic, Olivier Jobard, Jon Jones, Thomas Kern, Gary Knight, Rikard Larma, Paul Lowe, Anthony Loyd, Santiago Lyon, Enric Marti, James Mason, Christopher Morris, James Nachtwey, Anja Niedringhaus, Peter Northall, Remy Ourdan, Gilles Peress, Michael Persson, Ariane Quentier, Noël Quidu, Laurent Rebours, Andrew Reid, Patrick Robert, David Rohde, Laurent Sazy, Kurt Schork, Tom Stoddart, Laurent Van der Stockt.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Bosnia and Herzegovina. Where is Bosnia? It sits on the Western shore of the Balkan Peninsula. Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, is today one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Medjugorje is located in the mountains near Mostar. The small town is incredibly popular with Catholic pilgrims. Millions of pilgrims have visited the site since 1981, when a small group of young people began reporting seeing visions of the Virgin Mary (Madonna di Medjugorje).
2. Bosnia has a currency that can’t be exchanged anywhere else in the world. The Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM) can’t be bought outside the country. So upon leaving exchange it or the only use will be as an expensive souvenir.
3.In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the three official languages are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. For the local population it is of great importance to appoint the language spoken. In practical terms, though, it is one and the same language. The differences are similar to the differences between American and British English. Before the war the language was called Serbo-Croatian, but that name is no longer used.
4. Stari Most Bridge (or Mostar Bridge) is a 16th century Ottoman bridge in the city of Mostar that crosses the river Neretva and connects two parts of the city. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, but it was destroyed in 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak War. Later, the bridge was reconstructed and opened in 2004. Stari Most is a symbol of Mostar and part of UNESCO world heritage.
5. Unlike in Croatia and Serbia, there is not a single McDonald’s in Bosnia. In fact, there are no international fast food chains. However you have all kinds of independent local fast food vendors that serve local staples like Cevapi , Burek, Kukuruz or Kebabs.
6. Over the past 100 years Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, has found itself a member of 6 different states and has witnessed the Sarajevo Assassination, the First and Second World Wars, the XIV Winter Olympic Games, and the longest-running siege of any town in modern history (1425 days).
7. For several hundred years, the borders of two great empires, the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian, which represented the two poles of the world at that time – East and West, Islamic and Christian – met in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This made the country and its capital a crossroads for very different worlds. Sarajevo is one of those rare cities where, during a ten-minute walk, you can see places of worship for the world’s most important monotheistic religions: Orthodox and Catholic churches, synagogues and mosques.

http://davidsbeenhere.com David’s Been Here takes you to Bosnia and Herzegovina to discover what to see and do in the beautiful city of Mostar. The city is well known in the Balkans for its impressive Ottoman-era architecture and laid-back atmosphere. When there aren’t tourists, the old part of the city is ideal for strolling, shopping, and sipping coffee at a local kafana (coffee shop).
David and his friend Sasha spend 2 days exploring Mostar. Their first stop is also the most popular attraction in town – the 16th century Stari Most Bridge (means “Old Bridge”). Sasha explains a little bit about Stari Most’s history and how you can watch the world-famous Mostari Dive Club members do the death-defying jump into the freezing Neretva River below.
David and Sasha then make a quick stop at the Crooked Bridge, which was used as a trial run before the Ottomans built Stari Most. Afterwards David is able to capture two different jumps off Stari Most, which is exciting since tourists don’t always scrounge up enough to pay the divers the 25-euro fee to jump for the crowd. It may seem fun and games, but it is actually quite dangerous! Sasha explains that anyone can jump but they must first get training from a member of the dive club.
Then onto the Biscevica House, a beautiful 17th century Turkish home that holds a great deal of folk art and features traditional architecture. It was built in 1637 and has been in the same family for the past 4 generations. The most intriguing architectural feature of the Biscevica House is the sitting room supported by only 2 exterior pillars. Biscevica House is a museum, so anyone can visit. Other beautiful features include the hand-carved wood and copper works.
Onto the next stop, which is the Muslibegovic House, another 17th century Turkish house that currently serves as a museum/ hotel. In 2010, Expedia.com readers voted the Muslibegovic House 8th best hotel in the world.
David then heads to Koski-Mehmed Pasha Mosque to go up to the top of its minaret for bird’s eye views of Mostar and the iconic Stari Most Bridge. Sasha then takes David to another beautiful building in Mostar, the Karadjoz Bey Mosque. It dates back to 1556 and was built by the Ottomans. This is actually one of the largest Mosques in the country.
We hope you enjoyed David’s suggestions for what to see and do in Mostar.

http://davidsbeenhere.com/ David’s Been Here is traveling all over Bosnia & Herzegovina in search of the best destinations and coolest day trips. In this travel short, David heads to one of the best preserved Ottoman towns in Bosnia: Travnik. An old Bosnian capital city (dating back to the 17th and 19th centuries), this historic locale is home to an incredible Ottoman castle (one of the best preserved in the country), beautiful mosques, delicious cevapi and some outrageously good sheep’s cheese (a specialty of the region). Take a stroll through this iconic town in a quick day trip from Sarajevo, and make sure you stop into Travnicki Sir where you can sample a wide variety of different sheep’s cheese- too good to pass up!

Even though the scars of the past are still visible all over the city this is now a place where different cultures and religions are living together peacefully. Churches, mosques and synagogues can be found almost next to each other which is why Sarajevo is often called “European Jerusalem”.
One of our favorite Things to do in Sarajevo was walking around the beautiful old town. We recommend trying the local food, checking out the works of the craftsmen and drinking a typical bosnian coffee.

http://davidsbeenhere.com David’s Been Here is touring all the must-visit sites and top attractions in Bosnia & Herzegovina. In this short clip, David brings us to the south-central town of Konjic, where he pays a visit to the Old Stone Bridge. Built in the year 1682 by the Ottomans, this historic bridge was destroyed by the Germans in 1945 and then reconstructed in 2009. One of the best examples of Ottoman architecture in all of Bosnia & Herzegovina, this bridge is well worth a visit if you’re driving from the capital city of Sarajevo to the southern city of Mostar. Take some photos of the bridge, stop by for a coffee and take a short tour around this picturesque, quaint town… an interesting and quick day trip in southern central Bosnia & Herzegovina!

Mostar is a city and municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Inhabited by 113,169 people, it is one of the most important cities in the Herzegovina region, its cultural capital and the center of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (natively: mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.
History
Human settlements on the river Neretva, between the Hum Hill and the Velež Mountain, have existed since prehistory, as witnessed by discoveries of fortified enceintes and cemeteries. Evidence of Roman occupation was discovered beneath the present town.
As far as medieval Mostar goes, although the Christian basilicas of late antiquity remained in use, few historical sources were preserved and not much is known about this period. The name of Mostar was first mentioned in a document dating from 1474, taking its name from the bridge-keepers (mostari); this refers to the existence of a wooden bridge from the market on the left bank of the river which was used by traders, soldiers, and other travelers. During this time it was also the seat of a kadiluk (district with a regional judge). Since Mostar was on the trade route between the Adriatic and the mineral-rich regions of central Bosnia, the settlement began to spread to the right bank of the river.
However, prior to the 1474 the names of two towns appear in medieval historical sources, along with their later medieval territories and properties -- the towns of Nebojša and Cimski grad. In the early 15th century the late medieval county of Večenike covered the site of the present-day Mostar along the right bank of the Neretva: Zahum, Cim, Ilići, Hraštani and Vojno. It was at the center of this area, which in 1408 belonged to the Radivojević's, that Cim fort was built (prior to 1443). Mostar is indirectly referred to in a charter of King Alfonso V of Aragon dating from 1454 as Pons (Bridge), for a bridge had already been built there. Prior to 1444, the Nebojša fort was built on the left bank of the Neretva, which belonged to the late medieval county still known as Večenike or Večerić. The earliest documentary reference to Mostar as a settlement dates from April 3, 1452, when natives of Dubrovnik wrote to their fellow countrymen in the service of Đorđe Branković to say that Vladislav Hercegović had turned against his father and occupied the town called Blagaj and other places, including "Duo Castelli al ponte de Neretua.".

http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode David takes us around to discover what to do in Banja Luka, the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this episode we'll show you what to see and where to eat in Banja Luka should you ever make it to the central northern region of this fascinating country.
David opens up with a brief history of the city from the banks of the Vrbas River near the Kastel, where he explains all the different cultures that have resided Banja Luka throughout the centuries. The first stop on David's Banja Luka tour is Gospodska Street, the city's main pedestrian boulevard lined with neo-Rennaissance and art nouveau buildings. Along Gospodska Street there are shops, banks, sidewalk cafes and restaurants.
Next is the Church of Christ the Savior, a Serbian Orthodox church in downtown Banja Luka. What stands today is a reconstruction of the original church built in 1929 and destroyed during WWII. This one was built in 2004 and features a beautiful bell/ clock tower and golden domes that are typical of eastern orthodox churches. If you come to Banja Luka don't miss visiting the Central Market, a covered market where vendors sell everything from vegetables and clothing, to specialty cheeses and household items. Everything is so fresh and organic! The Central Market open every day and is free to enter. The best time to come is in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
If you've been traveling in Bosnia for a while, you may have tried Ćevapčići (pronounced che-vap-chee-chee). These oblong-shaped grilled minced meatballs are the undisputed kings of Bosnian fast foods. You can find them throughout the Balkans; an influence left behind by the Ottomans. In Banja Luka Ćevapčići are made a little differently than the rest of the country - they are patties instead of shaped like sausages. A great place to try them is Kod Muje restaurant. From the outside, Kod Muje looks like a wooden cabin. Sit outside in the shaded terrace under one of the umbrellas like David did to enjoy the fresh air with your meal. This is a cheap and very satisfying meal.
The next restaurant David visits is the only restaurant in the Kastel fortress, Kazamat Restaurant. It has a beautiful setting along the Vrbas River, which is why reserving a table outside is highly recommended! For the last 30 years they've specialized in traditional Serbian food like fresh salads and grilled meats. The inside of Kazamat Restaurant is a little dark, but decorated with medieval memorabilia that's worth having a look. One of David's top restaurant picks for Bosnia!
According to everyone we spoke with, Mala Stanica is the best restaurant in Banja Luka, so David knew he had to try it! What makes Mala Stanica special is its location within the 19th century train station. This historically and architecturally significant building is a cultural icon of Banja Luka. Mala Stanica specializes in gourmet fusion cuisine, and they believe in slow cooking their foods to optimize the flavors. David enjoyed a memorable tasting menu of the house specialties with sampling from the extensive wine list (100+ wines!) You cannot leave until you've had the chocolate soufflé, their most popular dessert. TO-DIE-FOR!

Jonathan Walters was the two-goal hero as an organised Ireland saw off Bosnia-Herzegovina and deservedly booked their place at Euro 2016.
A wonderful atmosphere in the Aviva Stadium, as Ireland win the second leg of a major-championship play-off for the first time! They deserved that result, because while the visitors enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, they were undone by rope-a-dope tactics. Ireland soaked up the pressure, conceded very few real chances, and put theirs away when they arrived. The penalty in the first half may have been farcical, but the result was secured in the second, so controversy doesn’t come into it. Ultimately, Ireland are the deserved victors in this play-off, and will be joining the Euro 2016 party! Magnificent scenes. Still, poor old Edin Visca, eh? He was brilliant.

Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.
