Ethics: The Source of a New Theological Liberalism? - Peter Saunders
The old liberalism had its roots in the radical biblical criticism of the 19th century. Old liberals doubted core Christian doctrines like the incarnation, Christ’s death and resurrection, his ascension and second coming, the authority of Scripture, justification by faith and the Day of Judgment. The new liberalism is more orthodox on these things but sees ethical issues as being in the category

The old liberalism had its roots in the radical biblical criticism of the 19th century. Old liberals doubted core Christian doctrines like the incarnation, Christ’s death and resurrection, his ascension and second coming, the authority of Scripture, justification by faith and the Day of Judgment. The new liberalism is more orthodox on these things but sees ethical issues as being in the category of what Paul, in 1 Corinthian 8 & 10 and Romans 14, calls ‘disputable matters’ on which Christians can legitimately disagree but stay in fellowship. This workshop evaluates and critiques the damaging influence on Christian witness and discipleship of four ‘Christian’ views on ethics including Fletcher’s ‘situation ethics’ and what Bonhoeffer called ‘cheap grace’.

There are many ethical questions surrounding global climate change. Should you trust the experts who claim the data support dire predictions for our future? Are some attempts to address the causes and implications of climate change ethically flawed? Is adopting nuclear energy a good policy option for controlling emissions? How much risk can we take on? What do we owe to future generations and the planet we will leave them? Our panel of expert discuss these and other issues.
Panelists include:
Bill Kabasenche, Washington State University
Kent Keller, Washington State University
Andrew Light, George Mason University

ETHICAL REPORTING OF ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS: People are not receiving available information about expected risks and remedies as climate change escalates. People get most of their information about science from the media. Therefore, inadequate reporting of risks and remedies becomes a matter of journalistic ethics.
A doctoral thesis by Dr Jan Sinclair showed that the news media have framed climate change as political but not physical, global therefore not local, and a problem for “others” but not for “us”.
A failure by media to warn populations of likely dangers applies both to Pacific journalists, and journalists from developed countries. The seminar on 11 March 2015 was introduced by PMC director Professor David Robie and featured two main speakers:
Science communication specialist Dr Jan Sinclair (Massey University) began reporting on climate change in 1987. Her PhD investigated why journalists ignored scientific warnings in favour of political controversies.
Doctoral candidate and Kiribati Independent editor Taberannang Korauaba (AUT University) who has recently conducted field work in Micronesia and will discuss climate change issues and the media especially from a Pacific perspective.

Clear and secure rights to property—land, natural resources, and other goods and assets—are crucial to human prosperity. Most of the world’s population lack such rights. That lack is in part a consequence of political and social breakdowns, and in part driven by informational deficits. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, by virtue of their aerial perspective, are able to gather large amounts of information cheaply and efficiently, as can unpowered aerial platforms like kites and balloons.
That information, in the form of images, maps, and other environmental data, can be used by communities to improve the quality and character of their property rights. These same tools are also useful in other, related aspects of global development. Drone surveillance can help conservationists to protect endangered wildlife and aid scientists in understanding the changing climate; drone imagery can be used by advocates and analysts to document and deter human rights violations; UAVs can be used by first responders to search for lost people or to evaluate the extent of damage after natural disasters like earthquakes or hurricanes.
Earlier this year, New America launched a website, drones.newamerica.org, which comprises a database of such uses of drones, as well as the first comprehensive compilation of global drone regulations. In conjunction with this July 22nd Symposium, New America has published a primer that discusses the capabilities and limitations of unmanned aerial vehicles in advancing property rights, human rights and development more broadly. The primer contains both nuts-and-bolts advice to drone operators and policy guidance. The primer is available for download at drones.newamerica.org/primer.
This program is made possible by the support of Omidyar Network and Humanity United.
