Salt Lake City, often shortened to Salt Lake or SLC, is the capital and the most populous city of the U.S. state of Utah. With a population of 186,440 as of the 2010 Census, the city lies in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which has a total population of 1,145,905. Salt Lake City is further situated in a larger urban area known as the Wasatch Front, which has a population of 2,328,299. It is one of only two major urban areas in the Great Basin (the other being Reno, Nevada), and the largest in the Intermountain West.
The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his Mormon followers, who extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley. Due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally named "Great Salt Lake City"—the word "great" was dropped from the official name in 1868. Although Salt Lake City is still home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), less than half the population of Salt Lake City proper are members of the LDS Church today.
Utah (/ˈjuːtɔː/ or i/ˈjuːtɑː/) (Arapaho: Wo'tééneihí' ) is a state in the Western United States. It became the 45th state admitted to the Union on January 4, 1896. Utah is the 13th-most extensive, the 34th-most populous, and the 10th-least-densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately 80% of Utah's 2,817,222 people live along the Wasatch Front, centering on Salt Lake City. This leaves vast expanses of the state nearly uninhabited, making the population the sixth most urbanized in the U.S. The name "Utah" is derived from the name of the Ute tribe and means "people of the mountains" in the Ute language. Utah is bordered by Arizona on the south, Colorado on the east, Wyoming on the northeast, Idaho on the north and Nevada on the west. It also touches a corner of New Mexico.
Utah is the most religiously homogeneous state in the Union. It is home to the Salt Lake Temple, and approximately 60% of Utahns are reported to be members of LDS Church which greatly influences Utah culture and daily life.
Sun's up I better get up and make the rounds
All alone on my own here in this old town of Salt Lake City
Gotta find work forget the hurt and how she put me down
For some man who didn't care but with his fast talk and curly hair
He took her away from me in Salt Lake City
[ guitar ]
Night has come day is done
But there's just no job to be found in Salt Lake City
Oh this room's cold no one to hold so I just walk around
And think of all the times that she said that she loved me
But that's just a memory in Salt Lake City
I should pack my things and go but my heart keeps saying no
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you except the one thing that you want me to
We went across the mighty Rio Grande and saw Disneyland and the sea you and me
But there's one thing I'll never do not even for you
I'm not going to Salt Lake City
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you except to walk among the Osmond crew
I know you're planning for a latter day and you can't betray what you know in Provo
But there's one less town on the globe and if you must go there you're going alone
I'm not going to Salt Lake City even if they tell me I can stay
Even if they resurrect my brain I don't wanna go there I don't wanna go insane
I'm not pure and I'm not pretty and I'm not going to Salt Lake City
Sun's up better get up and make the rounds
All alone on my own here in this old town of Salt Lake City
Gotta find work forget the hurt and how she put me down
For a man who didn't care but with fast talk and curly hair
He took her from me and Salt Lake City

Down in Utah, the guys and I dig a city called Salt Lake
It's got the grooviest kids that's why we never get tired of Salt Lake
And the way the kids talk so cool is an out of sight thing
And the number one radio station makes the town really swing, yeah
Salt Lake City, we'll be coming soon
There's a park near the city, yeah, all the kids dig the lagoon now
It's full of all kinds of girls and rides and we'll be flyin' there soon now
And girl for girl, they've got the cutest of the western states, yeah
They got the sun in the summer and winter time the skiing is great, yeah
Salt Lake City, we'll be coming soon
Argue in the lobby. First things first. Your temper
tantrum is paid for. I'll get my money's worth. You say
it's not me, so I know what it's all about. You wanted me
coming along, not coming out, because I'll cramp your
style for the precious little while you need. Squinting
back at you through the chlorine in my eyes. You're
grinning in the shallow end like a Stepford Wife. A girl
asks me if I am competing, too. I say I'm with a friend
and I'm pointing right at you. I lean up on the ladder
and listen to the chatter fly by. And you could be the
last one among the throng of bodies I see. You could be
the last one, but you're content to blend seamlessly.
And, now, Angela, I'm with you like you asked me to be.
Why do we do this? I'm not stupid, I'm just lonely.
Here's the keys to the hotel. We could make decisions
there, with the lights down low, and the blinds carefully
closed. And when we get done, we will be the only ones.
Tongues wrapped tight around the reasons why. And when we
get through, there's nothing else but me and you. Groping
for the guts to say good-bye. Fold a paper boat from a
gas receipt, and set it in the drainage by my feet. I
don't even try to get in, 'cause they'll turn me away;
it's obvious to anyone alive that I'm underage. But I
wonder what you're doing that's so time consuming here.
