Guangxi's location, in mountainous terrain in the far south of China, has placed it on the frontier of Chinese civilization throughout much of China's history. The current name "Guang" means "expanse" and has been associated with the region since the creation of Guang Prefecture in AD 226. It was given provincial level status during the Yuan Dynasty, but even into the 20th century it was considered an open, wild territory.
The abbreviation of the province is "桂" (Pinyin: Gui; Zhuang: Gvei), which comes from the city of Guilin, the former capital, center of much of Guangxi's culture, politics, and history, and currently a major city in the autonomous region.

This was our last day in Yangshuo. It was really only a half day because we had an afternoon bus ride from Yangshuo's North Bus Station direct to the Guilin Airport for our evening flight back to Shanghai.
We made the most of it by busing out to the nearby town of XingPing. But first, right after we checked out of the Phoenix Pagoda, we took a taxi to the North Bus Station to buy our bus tickets for the afternoon trip to the Guilin Airport. Each ticket cost 50 RMB. We highly recommend booking your bus tickets at least 12 hours before your departure because popular tourist routes often sell out.

We spent three days and two nights in Yangshuo, Guangxi Province! We flew from Shanghai to Guilin then took a bus directly from the airport to Yangshuo's North Bus Station, which cost just 50 RMB per person and took almost 90 minutes. Our hotel is located just south of Yangshuo City in FengLou Village, so we had to transfer to two other mini buses to get there. First we took a mini bus from the North Bus Station to the South Bus Station then a second mini bus from the South Bus Station to FengLou. We had the option to take a cab from North Bus Station directly to our hotel for 50 RMB, but it was

Day 2 in YangShuo was all about biking! We rented two Giant mountain bikes from our hotel, Phoenix Pagoda, for just 50 RMB per bike per day. We set out at about 10:30 with our bikes and map and didn't return to the hotel until around 7:00 pm. We spent most of the day on quiet country roads that wove through villages and rice fields. It was BEAUTIFUL. The terrain was mostly flat although we did encounter two or three hills.
During the middle of the ride we wound up on West Street, which is the heart of YangShuo's tourist industry. It's convenient for shopping, food and accommodation but is absol

7) Taking the train in China from Hong Kong to Guangzho en route to Guilin travel video
So tonight is our very last night in Yangshuo, a charming little town in Southwestern China, so we're going to show you around the main strip.
So our first stop is going to be the street food market. I haven't eaten in maybe two hours, so it's time to get a snack.
If I had to choose between Guilin and Yangshuo the two most popular cities in this region it's definitely Yangshuo. It's a more historic town. It's a lot more pedestrian friendly and there are great
As we were wandering around the night market tonight we had lots of people come up to us and ask to take photos beside us. At least probably four or five times and we finally filmed the last one. It was really cool. We were like celebrities in China. Yeah, almost famous.
So, this market had some pretty cool souvenirs. We saw fake Chinese passports if you want to take one of those home. They also had combs carved out of ox bone. They had these stamps where you can get your Chinese name carved on them and then you can just sign documents that way which is pretty cool.
Today we are visiting a local hill tribe that just lives a few hours outside of Guilin and we've come here because this community is known for the women's long hair. They grow it out and it's almost a meter and a half long and we're actually going to be watching a performance where they spin their hair and wrap it up and show us how they wear it.
Today we're in between Guilin and Yangshuo and we're doing a special river cruise down the Li River.
So this tour is going to be an hour and a half long and we're going to get to enjoy some pretty stunning landscapes, so I'm pretty excited about it.
When I came here two years ago it was hazy and foggy. Now it's a gorgeous glorious day.
Here we are at the Longji Rice Fields which are located just outside of Guilin. We've had such good luck. Check out the weather and the views behind.
So we are hiking up to one of the viewing platforms. This is going to be tough because it's like forty degrees outside and we're been told it'll take 30 minutes to one hour depending on our pace. So I'm trying to stay hydrated. Audrey is going to have to workout
We've rented a couple of bikes and we've decided to spend our last morning exploring around the countryside areas of Yangshuo. They were pretty cheap. Just under two dollars for each bike.
So we finally made it to Guilin.
So this is the Guilin main square. It gets really busy here at night. Lots of shops, restaurants, eateries. You can do it all here.
Chinese singing.
So we are now at the lake and the main attraction are the these two pagodas that light up at night.
Background music playing.
Oh, that mapo tofu looks so good. Really generous sized portion.
Well, it's hard to believe but our time in Hong Kong has already expired. Today we're taking a train ride. Where are we going? We're crossing over into China.
We are in Guangzho. Apparently there are two train stations. We arrived at the one that is on the East End of the City and we had to get across town to the other and it was difficult but we need to keep going.
So right now we are in Guangzho station waiting for our train to Guilin. And we happen to be waiting in the VIP room.
There is no tea in this tea room.
We're going to Guilin.
Uh, we're looking for number ten.
So we're in the dining cart now getting ready to have dinner. Let's see what is on the menu if we can even read it. We barely got a seat here.
Decision time. So we did manage to find an English menu which makes things a lot easier.
Fish one. Tofu with pork. One. Okay. Rice. One Rice? Okay. Beer. One. Okay. Ah, green tea - one. okay.
So this is the friend fish with a sweet and sour sauce.
Good morning. We are almost in Guilin. Our train has been delayed about an hour and a half.

Mysterious Lijiang Valley (Li River)- Guangxi, Gulin, China
Lijiang (丽江; Lìjiāng) is a small city in Yunnan Province, China.The Li River (Chinese: 漓江; pinyin: Lí Jiāng) or Lijiang is a river in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. It ranges 83 kilometers from Guilin to Yangshuo, where the Karst mountain and river sights highlight the famous Li River cruise.
The city has an 800 year history from as early as the late Song Dynasty. It is built where the Jade River divides into three and its streams form the canals and waterways which flow along the old town streets. Lijiang became known in the west through a book written by an American commissioner who traveled in and out of Yunnan province in late 19th century. Particularly after China started to admit foreign tourists in the 1980s, Lijiang began to attract visitors. To fulfill their needs, local people started restaurants and cafes. It was the earthquake in 1996 that brought Lijiang to the world's attention. Chinese people also long for the lifestyle and the excellent environment in Lijiang and started pouring in.
This started the new era of Lijiang.

Guangxi Province Vlog: Li River Boating & LaoZhaiShan Hike!

October 13, 2014
We then went across town to the South Bus Station, which is a departure point for local routes. We paid 8 RMB per person for the hour long bus ride to XingPing. The bus stopped a couple times along the way. The ride was pleasant and the scenery beautiful.
As soon as we arrived at the XingPing Bus Station, tourist guides surrounded us. We didn't have time to negotiate the day's activities on our own, so we told a guide that we wanted to take a boat ride on the Li River.
Many tourists choose to travel from Guilin to Yangshuo by large tourist boats that serve a meal and announce all the viewing points over the intercom. The Li River is known for its mountain scenery, especially the famous scene on the 20 RMB bill! The large boats only travel in one direction. Another way to see the Li River is from XingPing, which takes you by much of the same scenery as the large boat, including the 20 RMB mountains. XingPing's bamboo rafts have motors, unlike the the two-person rafts that dominate the Yulong River in Yangshuo. The Li River's rafts fit four people plus the person steering the boat. We paid 240 RMB for the ride, which took about an hour, and we had the boat all to ourselves. It was, as expected, gorgeous!
Once we reached dry land, we headed straight to the entrance of LaoZhaiShan, or LaoZhai Mountain. This hike is free and took approximately 45 minutes. It gets steeper and a bit treacherous towards the top when you have to climb some precarious looking stairs. We were amazed when we got to the top and saw a young European couple with their four-year-old daughter. What a brave girl! Even though it was a little hazy the day we were there, the view from the top was still sweeping and magnificent. We can't imagine how far the layers of mountains stretch on a clear day! We recommend climbing to top of the rocks behind the pagoda on the peak for an even more sweeping view of the river and XingPing town.
Thank you for watching!!
Happy travels!

We had the option to take a cab from North Bus Station directly to our hotel for 50 RMB, but it was easy enough to take public transportation. It was also a lot cheaper! The first bus ride was one RMB per person and the second was just three RMB per person. Can't beat those prices!
The Phoenix Pagoda is a lovely guesthouse that ranks among the top 10 hotels in Yangshuo on TripAdvisor. It's close to the YuLong River and there's a quiet, quaint village just behind the hotel that makes for a lovely evening walk, which is what we did.
But before exploring the village we went for a bamboo raft ride on the YuLong River. The rafts are built for two passengers and the person who steers the raft. We arranged this excursion through our hotel and paid 150 RMB for the hour long ride; we paid extra for the one-way taxi ride. We decided to walk back to the hotel from the drop-off point, which took 20-25 minutes.
See you in four days for our next upload!
And, as always, thank you for watching!! :)

Documentary on the Hakka martial arts in Guangxi and Guangdong provinces with a focus on the martial arts of Hezhou in eastern Guangxi as well as some of the arts of the Meizhou area of eastern Guangdong.
I previously posted this documentary however that version had a much smaller picture with extremely low definition. Due to the popularity I decided to post a better version.
In ancient times the peoples of southern China were looked upon as barbarians by the northern Han Chinese. This coupled with the fact that the ancestors of the Hakka went south as refugees often with little except the clothes on their backs, causing them to be seen as beggars by the Southern Chinese peoples, created great tension between the two groups.
So despite the fact that almost 1000 years have past since the major southward migration of the Hakka's ancestors they have retained a separate identity.
This has also led to great conflict between the Hakka and the various peoples they encountered.
The constant small scale warring between the Hakka and their neighbors led to the development of many unique martial arts.
Originally many of the Hakka people settled in coastal Fujian province, however during the early Qing dynasty the coasts of Fujian were cleared of villages and people in order to cut off the last holdouts of the Ming dynasty in Taiwan. When this was over and the people were allowed to return many landless people flooded in to grab land in areas previously settled by the Hakka. This caused much conflict eventually prompting the Qing government to force the Hakka to relocate. Many moved southwest into Guangdong, others moved due west to places like Jiangxi, southern-Henan, and Guangxi where there were already large populations of Hakka people. In all these areas you can find martial arts practiced among the Hakka peoples. However when you talk about Hakka martial arts most people think about the styles practiced in Guangdong province. These arts still retain many of the features of Fujianese styles, they are often said to be very different from the other arts practiced in Guangdong. However in reality they have greatly influenced the kung fu practiced by all people in the area.

It's convenient for shopping, food and accommodation but is absolutely swarming with large tourist groups, especially at night. We recommend staying in other parts of the city and visiting West Street for shopping and dining. We stayed south of YangShuo town in FengLou village, which is close to the YuLong River.
It helped to have a map, but it also led to some frustration because the map was not up-to-date and many of the paths are unmarked. This meant we got lost...a lot. Lol. At one point we were concerned that we wouldn't make it back to a main road before dark, which fortunately wasn't the case. To avoid similar stresses, we recommend starting your day earlier and having a good grasp of distances on the map, which may not be drawn to scale.
Thank you for watching!! And happy travels!!

Unlike the hustle and bustle of the nearby city of Guilin, in the Guangxi region situated in the heart of China the landscape that follows the Lijiang River has a rural and idyllic atmosphere. Rural life here is blessed with beautiful scenery and the landscape around Guilin is synonymous with the magnificence of the legendary Middle Empire. Numerous stalactites and stalagmites lie within the caves of the region's impressive mountains. Some of the caves, such as the Reed Cave, have in recent years been open to the public. Striking precipices and rock needles unite in a stunningly beautiful panorama

My Star Guide 6 - Bama + Guangxi with MediaCorp Artiste Pan Ling Ling
Travel video about destination Lijiang River.
Striking precipices and rock needles unite in a stunningly beautiful panorama full of glorious mystique. Here both wind and water have created a truly remarkable mountain world.In daytime the gravel banks along the shores of the Lijiang are frequented by farmers who lead their buffalo to drink from the river. The local cormorant fishermen are an even more exotic sight. They use captive water birds to attract fish and because their necks are secured to their master they are forced to submit their catch to him! It is not surprising that due to the overwhelming beauty of the surrounding mountains that this section of the Lijiang River is one of the most impressive natural landscapes in the whole of China.

China is a huge country in Eastern Asia (about the same size as the United States of America) with the world's largest population.
With coasts on the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea, in total it borders 14 nations. It borders Afghanistan, Pakistan (through the disputed territory of Kashmir), India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam to the south; Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to the west; Russia and Mongolia to the north and North Korea to the east. This number of neighbouring states is equalled only by China's vast neighbour to the north, Russia.
This article only covers mainland China. For Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, please see separate articles.
See in China
===========
China's attractions are endless and you will never run out of things to see. Especially near the coastal areas, if you run out of things to see in one city, the next one is usually just a short train ride away.
Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover or someone who just wants to relax on a nice beach, China has it all from the majestic Forbidden City in Beijing, to the breathtaking scenery of Jiuzhaigou. Even if you live in China for many years, you'll find that there's always something new to discover in another part of the country. Perhaps unsurprising due to its sheer size and long history, China has the third largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, after Italy and Spain.
Karst Scenery
=============
The gumdrop mountains and steeply sloping forested hills with bizarre rock formations favored by traditional Chinese artists are not creative fantasy. In fact, much of southern and southwestern China is covered in strangely eroded rock formations known as Karst. Karst is type of limestone formation named after an area in Slovenia. As limestone layers erode, the denser rock or pockets of different stone resist erosion forming peaks. Caves hollow out beneath the mountains which can collapse forming sinkholes and channels leading to underground rivers. At its most unusual Karst erodes to form mazes of pinnacles, arches and passageways. The most famous example can be found in the Stone Forest (石林 Shílín) near Kunming in Yunnan. Some of the most famous tourist areas in China feature spectacular karst landscapes — Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi, and much of central and western Guizhou province.
Sacred sites
==========
Several sites in China have famous Buddhist art:
Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province - more than 51,000 Buddhist carvings, dating back 1,500 years, in the recesses and caves of the Yangang Valley mountainsides
Mogao Caves in Gansu province - art and manuscripts dating back to the 4th century
Dazu Rock Carvings near Chongqing - dating from the 7-13th century
Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang - 5-10th century
Mountains
========
The Five Great Mountains (五岳 wǔyuè), associated with Taoism:
Mount Tai (泰山), Shandong Province (1,545 meters)
Mount Hua (华山), Shaanxi Province (2,054 meters)
Mount Heng (Hunan) (衡山), Hunan Province (1,290 meters)
Mount Heng (Shanxi) (恒山), Shanxi Province (2,017 meters)
Mount Song (嵩山), Henan Province, where the famous Shaolin Temple (少林寺) is located (1,494 meters)
The Four Sacred Mountains (四大佛教名山 sìdà fójiào míngshān), associated with Buddhism:
Mount Emei (峨嵋山), Sichuan Province (3,099 meters)
Mount Jiuhua (九华山), Anhui Province (1,342 meters)
Mount Putuo (普陀山), Zhejiang Province (297 meters, an island)
Mount Wutai (五台山), Shanxi Province (3,058 meters)
The three main sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism:
========
Mount Kailash, Tibet (5,656 meters), also known as Gang Rinpoche in Tibetan, also one of Hinduism's holiest mountains visited by many Hindu pilgrims

Some itineraries cover trips that are entirely within China:

Along the Yellow river
Along the Grand Canal
Yunnan tourist trail
Overland to Tibet
Long March
Others are partly in China:

Travel Asia - Cooking Beerfish with Harry in Yangshuo, Guangxi, China
Cooking Yangshuo's specialty, beerfish with our friend Harry!
From Yangshuo, Guangxi Province, China.
Beerfish is Yangshuo's specialty. Fish is from Li River, and they cook it with the local beer: Li Quian. Just a little bit of soy sauce and vegetables, the soup is amazing.
Our friend Harry from Little Bulls restaurant invited us to his kitchen and showed how the process. He's a great cook, and he doesn't use MSG.
It's is wickedly fresh, and delicious. When you are visiting Yangshuo, make sure to taste Beerfish!
Here's the blog post about Beerfish and Harry! : http://runawayjuno.com/2012/01/29/cooking-beer-fish-with-harry-from-yangshuo-guangxi-china/

6) A tour around Guilin, China at night including night markets, street food, pagodas and lakes 晚上桂林

This started the new era of Lijiang.

October 13, 2014

Travel video about destination Lijiang River.

===========
=============
==========
Mountains
========
The Five Great Mountains (五岳 wǔyuè), associated with Taoism:
Mount Tai (泰山), Shandong Province (1,545 meters)
Mount Hua (华山), Shaanxi Province (2,054 meters)
Mount Heng (Hunan) (衡山), Hunan Province (1,290 meters)
Mount Heng (Shanxi) (恒山), Shanxi Province (2,017 meters)
Mount Song (嵩山), Henan Province, where the famous Shaolin Temple (少林寺) is located (1,494 meters)
The Four Sacred Mountains (四大佛教名山 sìdà fójiào míngshān), associated with Buddhism:
Mount Emei (峨嵋山), Sichuan Province (3,099 meters)
Mount Jiuhua (九华山), Anhui Province (1,342 meters)
Mount Putuo (普陀山), Zhejiang Province (297 meters, an island)
Mount Wutai (五台山), Shanxi Province (3,058 meters)
The three main sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism:
========
Mount Kailash, Tibet (5,656 meters), also known as Gang Rinpoche in Tibetan, also one of Hinduism's holiest mountains visited by many Hindu pilgrims
Kawa Karpo
Amnye Machen
Itineraries
=========
Some itineraries cover trips that are entirely within China:
Two weeks to a month in China
A week near Hong Kong
Along the Yangtze river
Along the Yellow river
Along the Grand Canal
Yunnan tourist trail
Overland to Tibet
Long March
