The Japanese honorific くん -kun: How, why, when it is used
When, how, why is the Japanese honorific -kun used?
-Kun is said to have been invented by a legendary samurai teacher of the mid-19th century, Yoshida Shōin who accepted learners regardless of class.
But when he encouraged discussion among his students, he noticed that classism got in the way. Samurai students called their peasants peers Gonbei-dono (Gonbei was the most common name in pre-modern Japan. Average Joe = Average Gonbei). Peasants students called their samurai peers Gonbei-sama.
So to establish equality, Shōin had all students call each other with a new honorific, -kun.
Many of these students grew up to become rebels who eventually contributed to overthrowing the over-250 years old samurai government in 1867.
At the National Diet of Japan still now, there is a rule where ...

What is the Japanese honorific -dono all about?
If you watched Shogun, you might have wondered, sometimes they call him Anjin-sama, sometimes they call him Anjin-dono. What is -dono?
As I explained in an earlier video, it was considered rude in pre-modern Japan to call people by their names, so -sama was an honorific used towards people above you, and -dono was used towards people who are of equal rank or below.
Important nobles and samurai warlords all had a chunk of land as territory, and in that territory, they had their own mansion. Dono literally means mansion, so they called each other by the name of the place they lived.
So if your territory was in Kamakura, they would call you Kamakura-dono.
And then more people started using it, not just towards important people, and then at one point people were like, “I don't know wher...

At the National Diet of Japan still now, there is a rule where all Diet members call each other with the -kun suffix, male and female alike.
Nowadays, probably because of its origin, -kun is predominantly used towards males, and it symbolizes a closer relationship than -san relationships, but establishes a graceful distance than a no-honorific relationship.
In the video, I give you one very important use case of -kun which is exclusively used by girls towards boys 😂.

And then more people started using it, not just towards important people, and then at one point people were like, “I don't know where you live. Nor do I care. Steve-dono!” So Steve-dono was the equivalent of Steve-san back then.
But maybe, Steve-dono sounded a little too heavy, so people preferred to call each other Steve-san.
If you had visited Japan 200 years ago, a samurai might have called you Vancouver-dono, New York-dono, Mumbai-dono ☺️!

Trigonometric Functions: Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Cosecant, Secant, and Cotangent
Oh man, what is all this sine and cosine business? What do these things even mean?! And Greek letters now? I don't know Greek! OK friend, just relax. Understanding the trig functions is as easy as pi radians. We just make some triangles and set up a few definitions. I promise it's no sweat, just watch this!

Trig Visualized: One Diagram to Rule them All (six trig functions in one diagram)
In this video, we show a single diagram consisting of various triangles that connects the six primary trig functions (sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent) to lengths of line segments created from the unit circle (circle of radius 1). We use the diagram to explain features about why tangent and secant aren't defined at pi/2, the possible outputs of these six functions, and the Pythagorean trig identities. We also briefly discuss the fact that the "co" on three of the functions refer to the "complementary angle."

Graphing Trigonometric Functions
We love to graph functions, and now that we know about the trigonometric functions, let's learn to graph those too! These are periodic functions, meaning they spit out the same values over and over and over, with a frequency that depends on the period of the function. This will be easy to understand if we have the unit circle memorized, so make sure you've watched that tutorial too, and then let's do this!
