Pushkar (Rajasthan)
Pushkar (Rajasthan) Pushkar is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India. It is situated 14 Km from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams, pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus; it is often called "Tirth Raj" (the king of pilgrimage sites). In recent years it has become a popular destination for foreign tourists. Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. It has five principle temples, many smaller temples and 52 ghats where pilgrims decend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters. One of the primary temples is the 14th century temple dedicated to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world[1], so Lord Brahma's temple in Pushkar is quite rare. Pushkar is also famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair. The natural environment of Pushkar and the sacred lake has become increasingly degraded in the last few decades. The problems stem mainly from overdevelopment of tourist facilities and the deforestation of the surrounding area [2] Please note that Pushkar, the pilgrim centre, should not be confused with Budha Pushkar (Old Pushkar), a town nearby. Budha Pushkar is famous for it's rose farming. Pushkar is one of the oldest places of India. The date of its actual founding is not known, but legend associates Lord Brahma with its creation. Ramayan mentions Pushkara and says that Vishvamitra performed tapa here. It further says that Apsara Menaka came to Pushkara to bathe in its sacred waters. Mahabharata, while laying down a ...

FORTS OF INDIA: Episode- Chanderi Fort: directed by GS Chani and Gyandev Singh
Chanderi had been well established as a strategic holding by the 10th century, when it was controlled by the Pratihara kings; the artificial lake to the east, the Kirtisagar, is attributed to Kirtipala and the fort itself, with its four miles of walls, is still called Kirtidurga. Early in the 13th century Chanderi fell for the first of five times to the Delhi and Malwa sultanates, and the great bastions of the bala Qila are Muslim work. In time Malwa had become independent of Delhi, ruled by its own sultans. The most successful of these was Mahmud Khilji I who reigned for over 30 years, and during his time some of the most notable buildings in the town were made. The Kushak Mahal was built in 1445; only four of its original seven balconied storeys remain, the high walls lit by clerestory windows and vaulted over. The Jami Masjid and the Badal Mahal have the distinctly Persian, pre-Moghul, style of Mandu, with domes and arcades, tapered turrets, eaves and brackets that are especially Gujarati attributes, though these buildings were probably carved by local Hindu craftsmen or those captured in Gujarat. Babur's occupation was not the end of Chanderi's travails. At least seven times more the fort sustained battles and changed hands between Muslim, Afghan, Rajput and British. The most enduring monuments are the great Jain rock carvings near Babur's breach -- three standing figures and three lotus Tirthankaras. Further up the slope, in a cave, are three murtis; from here there ...
