Quentin Tarantino's 8th film, The Hateful Eight, is now out as a limited edition release in 70mm. Here are my thoughts on this film with an ensemble cast featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern. Was it on the level of his previous work?

Like I said, I separated out the second video just so that I can talk about seventy millimeter film and the difference that it makes. I'm slightly off center here because I'm going to use this space over here hopefully for visual aids. It's long and boring if I just try to explain it to you so I'm going to show it to you.
So, first thing up here is going to be an image that I took of my backyard using my tripod so I can take pictures from exactly the same places. So, a picture of my backyard at 4:3. Now, 4:3 aspect ratio is your normal like CRT monitor, a normal cold cathode ray tube TV. Next 16:9, 16:9 is the aspect ratio for most high definition TVs and computer monitors. You'll see that it's it's wider than it is tall. The reason you get letterboxing when you look at 1080p movies that you have on Blu-Ray is because the theater format is actually 2.35:1.
Seventy millimeter film that they're using, well, it's actually sixty five millimeter film with five millimeters designated for audio. The end result with the lens that they are using is a 2.78:1 ratio. It's almost three times as wide as it is tall. This is what a 2.78.1 ratio image looks like. It is wide kind of vista type thing. This is another image that I took. This is 2.78:1. This is some geese that I took a picture of this morning when I was playing disc golf. Now, if you look at it it looks like a very panoramic view it's very very wide, very thin. There's not a lot of extra sky, there's not a lot of extra ground. It's a very very broad view. Going back to the images in my backyard seventy millimeter film as it;s gonna be projected as 2.78:1 so this is what is gonna look like. Here's a 2.78:1 image of my backyard. Now, when they convert it to digital, odds are pretty good that they're going to show it in normal widescreen format for theaters 2.35:1. So, up top I'm going to have the 2.78:1 image; underneath that I'll have what it'll look like if its cropped down for theaters, and then underneath that a four by three image so this is what the bottom line here is what this image will look like if it's shown on a DVD. This is the normal DVD aspect ratio. The seventy millimeter film projected onto screen gives a very broad aspect ratio and that's actually a lot more like our eyes process images. When you're looking at images like this when you can do panorama landscape like the shots you see in, some of the shots, that you see in the trailer that's snow, cart's coming, the focus on characters very very broad pictures it gives a very good sense of expanse.
Have you ever been in a situation where you're trying to take a picture of a bunch of people and there's a lot of people side to side and you're trying to take a picture but you have to keep backing away keep backing away and away and away and away, and tell people to scooch in and scooch in, because the ratios is 4:3, that's your normal standard image that you're taking with the camera. So, when you get all the way back far enough for all those people to be in the shot, what you end up with is about a third of the screen is them, a third of the screen is above them, and a third of the screen is wasted space below. The wide aspect ratio allows you to be closer and shoot all of those people while cutting out the sky and the ground that's unnecessary.
What ends up happening when you're shooting things like inside of a wide-open cabin like it appears that at least part of this movie is going to be is that you don't need to see the roof or the floor but you can do a wide angle medium shot and show all the actors interacting on one side of the room. It doesn't have to be this person then cut to this person then cut to this person then cut to this person you can do an image, you can do a recording that's almost like a stage play where you see this person this person this person this person all at once. He's using the seventy millimeter film because of the types of things you can do with it and to go see it in a theater that has a seventy millimeter projector that can actually show the film from film directly onto the screen is going to be a very different experience.
In any case, for those of you that stuck around I hope this was interesting I actually thought it was really cool when I started looking at it and seeing what the implications were of it. If you're interested in these types of things give me a thumbs up let me know. If this wasn't useful to you, I'm sorry I separated it out so that it wouldn't be boring to anybody if they didn't want to click it so hopefully it wasn't. Hopefully it was just informative.

The AutoNation IMAX Theater is one of only 18 theaters globally that will show Star Wars: The Force Awakens in IMAX 70mm 2D film format. Since director J.J. Abrams filmed a sequence of this film with IMAX® cameras, only IMAX 70mm film theaters will allow the audience to experience the full size of this special IMAX sequence, which will expand to fill our entire 6-story-high screen. The IMAX camera is the highest resolution camera in the world. When captured with the IMAX camera, the image projected in IMAX 70mm 2D format features almost 10x more resolution than conventional 35mm film – to create the biggest, brightest, clearest images possible. So, for the ultimate IMAX experience you need to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the AutoNation IMAX Theater! The AutoNation IMAX Theater is one of only 18 theaters globally that will show Star Wars: The Force Awakens in IMAX 70mm 2D film format. Since director J.J.

There was a loose lens element in the middle lens assembly in this Canon 28-70mm 1:2.8 L, so i have to take it apart.
There was a lock ring, that normaly holds the lens in correct place.
But the lens has been dropped on a hard surface, so the lock came off and the lens element ratteling around inside, there was only some very small scract on the lens surface, but not a big problem, so this nice lens need some thinkering.
It's ver importent to make marks on the helical's so you can find the right groove for the lens assembly
And of course, take care of the flexcable......
Hope those 3 film can help other people who likes to try to repair there Canon 28-70mm 1:2.8 L lens.
Cheers

This December, the true cinephiles won’t be excited about the motion capture technology or new alien props in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they’ll be thrilled that Quentin Tarantino’s new movie is going to bring 70mm film projection technology back from the brink of extinction.
The new movie, a western called The Hateful Eight, is going to be released in a number of different ways to serve the widest possible audience, including an expansion to your local multiplex with now-standard digital projection. There are about 40,000 movie screens in the US and a whopping 97% of them now use digital projection instead of relying on film.
