Holiday Greetings to All

The holidays are a time for family and friends, a time to give thanks for all that we have been given and all we have been able to give. Another year has almost passed. With its passing, each of us has an opportunity for reflection, reviewing our successes and our failures over the past year, a process that enables us to set new goals, to adjust old goals, and discard that which does not help us to achieve our aspirations. I imagine many of us do this.

The Kentucky Dental Association is going through a very similar process, in an attempt to plan for the future. A top to bottom review of the organization, a self-examination, in the hope that the KDA can better meet the needs of its membership and prepare for our changing future. I would especially like to acknowledge those who have taken on the additional responsibility of chairing the seven planning subcommittees that will be performing a system-wide review of the KDA…Drs. William J. Moorhead, Ted Logan Jr., Kevin Wall, Beverly Largent and Fred Howard. Many of these individuals either fill or have filled a number of KDA leadership positions and we are all fortunate to have them working on our behalves.  The fruits of their labor will be harvested next year and years to come. Their efforts as well as those of their fellow committee members will benefit us all.

This leads me to my next topic, that being stewardship.  The members that I mention in the previous paragraph have made an active decision to get involved, to act as stewards of their chosen profession. It is easy to sit back and let others take care of business, but one of the things that I would like to challenge all who read this to consider, in reviewing the past year and planning for the next, think about stewardship.  Think about being involved in the future of your profession, getting involved in your local or state dental association or in state governance, developing working relationships with your local state representative or senator, so that if the need to have a discussion with them arises, you will be in a position to do so.

In the next year, there will be a number of opportunities to give a helping hand to our fellowman, those less fortunate than us. RAM clinics are planned in Pikeville June 11-12 and in Somerset September 17- 18.  These events will provide us all with the opportunity to extend the selfless deeds that are so prevalent at this time of the year and throughout the year.

I cannot write two paragraphs these days without saying something about the evolving Dental Regulations.  Unfortunately, anything that I write now will be obsolete before this goes to print and is mailed.  For those with questions, please refer to the President’s Update page and the Legislative Issues page in the MEMBERS section of the KDA website at kyda.org. If the KDA does not have your current address, you may update it simply by typing “UPDATE” in an Email subject line put your name and send it to judy@kyda.org and Judy will take it from there.

The preliminary program for the 2011 Kentucky Meeting, our annual meeting will be coming out sometime in the next month. The annual meeting is scheduled for the weekend of April, 6 through April 8. Once again this year, you may pre-register for courses online at the KDA website under the heading “Kentucky Meeting”. All courses will be designed to meet Kentucky’s new continuing education requirements.
