Thank You for the Opportunity

As I sign off as President of the KDA, I want to sincerely thank our KDA staff for their leadership, time and friendship: Dr. John Thompson for leading us as Interim Executive Director; Mr. Rick Whitehouse as our new Executive Director (who brings a whole new array of talents to our organization); Todd Edwards, Janet Glover, Melissa Nathanson, and Dr. Ted Logan, Jr., our Secretary-Treasurer. I also want to thank our lobbyists from McCarthy Strategic Solutions for their ideas and input. We have really used their talents this year, from setting up Legislative ‘Meet-n-Greets’, to attending local component society meetings as we traveled across the state, to our highlighted event - our Legislative Day in Frankfort on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. We had about 35 dentists come for this event. I want to commend those dentists who took the time to attend. We had many State Senators and Representatives drop by; several talked with us and others we were able to meet in their offices. It was a great day for the KDA.

As we commenced the 2015 KDA Annual Meeting in March, we had some inclement weather. I really appreciate those who braved the elements to make it to Louisville - some had as much as 21 inches of snow. I made some changes, this year, in our schedule of events for this meeting. For example, due to so many activities on the first day of our meeting, it was difficult to be on time for the President’s reception. So, I changed it to be a Dessert Reception and opened it up to all KDA members. We sent out emails and publicized it in KDA TODAY and that is why we didn’t send out personal invitations. I thought this might be a better time for those folks arriving later in the day to be able to attend the Randall Dinner and/or the Dessert Reception in a little more relaxed atmosphere. Folks really seemed to enjoy it!

Sometimes we all make excuses - I am too young, I am too old. I am not skilled enough or I am too tired. I want us to quit making excuses, think positively, and be more active within our dental profession. A common phrase that our lobbyists have used with us is, “We need to be at the table, or we will be on the menu!” We will be eaten up by outside groups. We have to fight for our profession or it will be taken away from us and others will be telling us exactly what to do. It is already starting, but it is not too late to take back our profession. You do have input. The KDA has many tangible and intangible benefits of membership. And yes, we do things that benefit all dentists, but hopefully this is what will help people see the need to join us —to help us fight these battles. We need your help! At our recent meeting, as I was visiting registration, sitting in various CE courses, and on the exhibit floor, I saw many people’s name badges with NO flags below their name. There are opportunities for these folks to get involved with organized dentistry. All of us should contribute something to our KDPAC. As openings arise, get on a committee at the local society level or the state level. It really doesn’t take that much time from your family or your business.

We also have input at Kentucky Board of Dentistry elections and meetings. From March 6, 2015 to March 13, 2015 we were able to vote for two dentists to be on this very important board and we had the opportunity to vote for a dental hygienist, as well.

We have various committees and councils that need your input and ideas. I want to, personally, thank our Medicaid workgroup and the Medicaid Dental TAC for all their hard work, time and efforts. The State has opened up the dental regulations and they gave us only a few weeks to look at their proposals and respond. Because of the efforts of these two groups, these regulations from the state are including a 25% increase in some of our reimbursements.

As I have worked on many KDA projects this last year, I have realized that I am not finished! May I have another year? As dentists, we are givers. Have you had patients ask you, “Are you going to give me a filling?”, “Are you going to give me a shot?” As KDA President, I have often thought about how I might give back to my profession. I have one year. I want to give it my best shot and do a great job. I want to give of my talents, my time, my strengths and I want to improve my weaknesses or appoint someone who can do the job at hand. Reflecting back over the year and evaluating the things accomplished: What did I gain? New friends, new acquaintances and contacts, strengthened relationships and I also gained about 15 pounds.

Again, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you and to serve our great profession.
