Totally Catholic! A Catechism for Kids and Their Parents and Teachers is a thorough resource for faith formation. The text is broken into 39 chapters and is based on the "Catechism of the Catholic Church." The first thought that popped in my head was wondering why they couldn't crank out one more chapter, since 40 is a well-known Biblical number." Apart from the typical textbook layout, each chapter contains the following sections:
"Did you know?" - Fun facts related to the material in the chapter.
"BTW" (short for "By The Way") - Extra information not covered in the chapter.
"Brainstorm" - Questions of reflection on the topic covered in the chapter.
"A Catholic VIP" - A short saint biography.
"Scripture Link" - A passage in the Bible related to the covered topic.
"From My Heart" - A short prayer.
"Now Act!" - An activity to perform.
The parts I found the most helpful were the "Scripture Link" and "A Catholic VIP." It is so important for our children to know the Bible, but we don't always do a good job of emphasizing it like our Protestant brothers and sisters. I also liked that each chapter had a saint, because it introduces the children to saints they don't always hear about, like Sts. Perpetua and Felicity or St. Andrew Dung-Lac.
Although each chapter is only 4-6 pages, Totally Catholic! is a very well-laid out book with a TON of information! I couldn't find an established age range for the book, but I would say it is appropriate for children ages 8-10, but you could probably use it a little younger or older if you wanted. I believe this book is intended for use as a primary text for homeschooling or Parish education, but you would need to add some outside reading or extra activities with it.Read more ›

Adults have "The Catechism of the Catholic Church" as their go-to guide for all things regarded to the Catholic faith and teens have the "YouCat" to help them know more about their faith, but until now, there really wasn’t a corresponding resource for Catholic children. With the publication of "Totally Catholic: A Catechism for Kids and Their Parents and Teachers," author Sr. Mary Kathleen Glavich and publisher Pauline Books and Media are working to change that.
Based on the adult version of "The Catechism", "Totally Catholic" covers all the basics of what it means to be Catholic. Sr. Mary Kathleen compares it to a computer manual for one’s new computer. In order to fully understand the computer, one needs to read the book. This is a manual for one’s faith, designed both for Catholic children as well as for those converting to the Catholic faith. The target audience is eight to twelve-year-olds, although those older than that range can certainly benefit from reading this book. No doubt teachers and parents will learn something new or perhaps be reminded of something they have forgotten. There is always more to learn about one’s faith.
The thirty-nine chapters cover topics such as faith, God’s revelation, the Trinity, Jesus’ life and teachings, the Church, the communion of saints, Mary, the end of the world, the seven sacraments, and the ten commandments. There are also two appendices on how Catholics live and how Catholics pray. Each chapter also includes a scripture link, a short profile on a saint (referred to as Catholic V.I.P.s) and an activity to reinforce learning and integrate one’s faith in one’s life.
The design of "Totally Catholic" is very kid friendly, full of illustrations, graphics, and pull-out boxes. While it is intended as a resource, it could also be used as the text for a high quality religion class. Those who read this book will have a very firm foundation in the Catholic faith.

I am the coordinator for the religious education program in my parish. I very rarely use any textbooks since I find most to be vague about our faith, watered down, or written above the grade level the books are intended. It is very difficult to find material that is age-appropriate and does a good job explaining our faith. Totally Catholic! is both age-appropriate (ages 8 - 13), and it does a great job explaining our faith.
All of my catechists are volunteers. They are wonderful with the kids, but there is so much to know about our faith. This book will serve as a great resource for them. They can have the book ready in case the kids ask something that needs to be looked up.
Some of the features I love about the book: 1) It explains important events in the Bible and references where these events are located in the Bible. 2) Imortant words are in bold and an explanation of the word is given. 3) "Did You Know" sections give background information about events in the Bible or other aspects of our faith. 4) The layout makes it easy to read and use. 5) It does a good job explaining specifics of our faith (saints, purgatory, immaculate conception, sacraments, the Mass, and more). The explanations are short and to the point.
It has been my experience that kids want more than just generalities about our faith (God loves me, God forgives me, etc.). They want real information about our faith. This book gives it! I don't view this book as a textbook to read cover to cover. I view it as a book where we will read certain sections and discuss those sections, or use it as a springboard to an activity that deals with what was just learned in the sections read.
Thank you for writing a book that actually explains our faith to kids.
