The Westminster Shorter Catechism is a classic summary of Christian doctrine. This summary becomes more useful if one really thinks about and understands the matters being presented. Author G.I. Williamson ably assists the reader in this endeavor. The author's writing style is straightforward and succinct, with a touch of humor. Charts, diagrams, illustrations and anecdotes are all utilized. We have participated in classes which used this book, and have also used it at home with our older children. I highly recommend this book.

G.I. Williamson has done a great service to all who are interested in understanding the teachings of the Bible. The Westminster Shorter Catechism is an excellent summary of the Bible's teachings in question and answer form, and Williamson's study guide examines each question and answer in a manner that even youngsters can understand.

In my humble opinion, overall this book presents wonderful, biblical, practical lessons which correspond to each Q&A; of the catechism (some lessons compound multiple Q&As;). Two issues I have with the book, however, are here:
1) Its dated English. I realize this book was written in 1970. It would be great if the book could be totally revised with contemporary English, including contemporary English Bible translations.
2) The author's dogmatic views with respect to certain non-Reformed groups such as the Roman Catholic Church or Seventh-Day Adventists. (By the way, I hold to a theologically Reformed view; I am Protestant and a Calvinist.) Generally speaking, like G.I. Williamson I do not agree with much of the theology and teachings of either the RCC or the SDA. However, I would contend that even within the RCC and SDA, there are some who are true believers (maybe not because of what the RCC or SDA teaches, but possibly in spite of what they teach!). But the way G.I. Williamson writes in this book, he seems to categorize the RCC and SDA as belonging to the category of "false religions", which seems to suggest that all who are part of the RCC or SDA are lost. Under the same umbrella of "false religions", the author includes Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, and Christian Scientists. I would agree that these latter three groups are clearly problematic with many unbiblical and extrabiblical teachings. However, I would not include the RCC and the SDA in the same group.

This book is great for study groups. I am using it for Sunday school class with the Jr. high class and it covers everything. Would recommend this book to anyone that might be in a teaching position. Never again wonder as to what to cover for next small group, start in the beginning and work your way through. Put down the topical studies and go for the real deal, the whole Scriptures!

If you are looking for illustrations of what the catechism means and how it condenses spiritual truth, this book will help you. If you are looking for explanations or comments on the catechism and its genesis or its order of questions, it won't help you. It expands on the catechism's teachings and uses it to explain why certain beliefs are right or wrong. It doesn't question the catechism or explain how it flows out of Scripture, which for someone not used to catechisms can be quite frustrating. Also, if you dislike TULIP, better steer clear.

Great work! The illustrations really help explain concepts in the text! I never considered myself "Reformed" due to not understanding things like Sovereignty, but I understand it soo much better now! Thank you Mr. WIlliamson!
