Pier 39 is a shopping center and popular tourist attraction built on a pier in San Francisco, California. At Pier 39, there are shops, restaurants, a video arcade, street performances, the Aquarium of the Bay, virtual 3D rides, and views of California sea lions hauled out on docks on Pier 39's marina. The marina is also home to the floating Forbes Island restaurant. A two-story carousel is one of the pier's more dominant features, although it is not directly visible from the street and sits towards the end of the pier. The family-oriented entertainment and presence of marine mammals make this a popular tourist location for families with kids.
The pier is located at the edge of the Fisherman's Wharf district and is close to North Beach, Chinatown, and the Embarcadero. The area is easily accessible via the historic F Market streetcars.
From the pier one can see Angel Island, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge. Blue & Gold Fleet's bay cruises leave from Pier 39.
Pier 39 was first developed by entrepreneur Warren Simmons and opened October 4, 1978.
San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which makes it the smallest county in the state. It has a density of about 18,187 people per square mile (7,022 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 13th-most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2014 population of 852,469. The city and its surrounding areas are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and are a part of the larger OMB designated San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth most populous in the nation with an estimated population of 8.6 million.
Watch Dogs (stylized as WATCH_DOGS) is an open world action-adventure third-person shooter stealth video game developed and published by Ubisoft. It was released worldwide on 27 May 2014 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, while a Wii U version was released in November 2014. Set within a fictionalized version of Chicago, Illinois, the single-player story follows a hacker and his efforts to seek revenge after the killing of his niece. The open world design lets players freely roam Chicago, which includes the urban city, open countryside, and the run-down neighborhoods that surround downtown.
The game is played from a third-person perspective and its world is navigated on-foot or by vehicle. Players control Aiden Pearce, a highly skilled grey hat hacker who can hack into the "ctOS", a centralized operating system which manages the hyper-connected city of Chicago, and formed after the Northeast blackout of 2003 was caused by a hacker. An online multiplayer mode is also provided in the game, allowing up to eight players to engage in both cooperative and competitive gameplay in a recreation of the single-player setting.
A pier is a raised structure typically supported by well-spaced piles or pillars. Bridges, buildings, and walkways may all be supported by piers. Their open structure allows tides and currents to flow relatively unhindered, whereas the more solid foundations of a quay or the closely spaced piles of a wharf can act as a breakwater, and are consequently more liable to silting. Piers can range in size and complexity from a simple lightweight wooden structure to major structures extended over 1600 metres. In American English, pier may be synonymous with dock.
Piers have been built for several purposes, and because these different purposes have distinct regional variances, the term pier tends to have different nuances of meaning in different parts of the world. Thus in North America and Australia, where many ports were, until recently, built on the multiple pier model, the term tends to imply a current or former cargo-handling facility. In Europe in contrast, where ports more often use basins and river-side quays than piers, the term is principally associated with the image of a Victorian cast iron pleasure pier. However, the earliest piers pre-date the Victorian age.

Pier 39 is one of San Francisco's most famous attractions. This shopping belt is built on a pier and is home to the world famous California Sea Lions. It has numerous souvenir shops (including some very quirky ones) and an equal number of seafood restaurants (and other snack stalls) all catering to tourists from near and far. It also has an aquarium, Aquarium by the Bay, for lovers of sea critters out there. When I was there in the summer, there was just one rather large sea lion basking in the sun as the sea lion population declines during the summer months. You can view the sea lion webcam courtesy of Pier 39 here: http://www.pier39.com/home/the-sea-lion-story/sea-lion-webcam/ Pier 39 makes a fun walk for the family or for couples to discover all things tacky or quirky. Filmed October 20, 2009 before the animals began leaving in droves November 27, 2009, almost as if someone had issued an order. San Francisco's Sea Lions could be found sun bathing, barking and up to their old antics at the marina's K-dock. They "hauled out" on PIER 39's K-Dock shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990. And visitors to Pier 39 had enjoyed their antics ever since.

Not long ago the Pier 39 California Se Lions disappeared over night, just gone. Lucky for us the returned from their trip up the California/Oregon coast. It's thought that food or mating motivated them to move, whatever it was I'm just glad as are all the tourists watching and photographing them that they're back. Sidebar - we saw a lot of seal colonies along the coast in California and Oregon. Canada slaughters seals by the hundreds of thousands and I don't think they would be as welcome at a pier by a city as the sea lions are in California. Thank you San Francisco...

You talk about affinity
You talk about you telling me
Your habitat
The harbor lights they follow me
They're tearing at our company
Can't you see?
I'm cold like a carving
Cold like a wind
Bold, gentle, stubborn
Your rolling waves
I'm baffled by your symmetry
Underneath the budded tree
Waiting on your game
To send you to some other joy
I'll pick you up and write you notes
Fancy meeting you here
Cause you're old like the street names
Feels old like our card games
Tired as home and morning pains
I tie you up with me
You will somehow make me learn
That what is it inside me that
burns
A carnival inside this mind
Just a divert roadside sign
Directing you along the way
Feels old like your pages
I'm feeling born like your babies
I've been boarded up like cages
But I'm busting out
But I'm busting out
And don't you give up on me
Don't be like me cause you love me
Don't give up on me
