The Phillies’ Jeff Francoeur handed the Washington Nationals an extra base on what would have ordinarily been a routine double on Sunday. It started when Denard Span drove a low shot into right field past Ryan Howard and towards the on-running Francoeur. It was at that point the Phillies right fielder picked up the ball, then dropped it, then picked it up again, then threw it forward a few feet, then picked it up again and threw it infield. By that time, Span had made his way around to third base and almost rounded them entirely for a rare, inside-the-park home run.
