9 July 2014 Dollow, Somalia - Three United Nations emergency directors have called for more sustained funding for Somalia nearly three year after the worst famine hit the Horn of Africa nation.
The emergency heads include Dominique Burgeon of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), David Kaatrud of the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) and Ted Chaiban of the UN's Children's Fund (UNICEF), whose last leg of their Somali tour took them to Dollow in southern Somalia and the Horn of Africa. FAO, WFP and UNICEF share the same goal of strengthening resilience in Somalia and reaffirmed their commitment to play a key role for mobilizing change through resilience enhancement while prioritizing the most vulnerable in the region.
The three are part of a larger team of emergency directors from the various UN agencies and international NGOs, led by the UN office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affair (OCHA), with an objective of reviewing the humanitarian situation in Somalia and Yemen.
In Dollow, the directors visited a number of projects under the joint resilience strategy involving FAO of the UN, WFP and UNICEF. However, this year, the UN is confronted with one of the lowest funded Consolidated Appeal Processes (CAP) in years, standing at 24 percent as of June 2014. While visiting one of the UNICEF supported health centers, Chaiban warned that funding shortages is putting millions of lives at risk.
"A big part of resilience building is the establishment of community based basic services," said Chaiban who visited a UNICEF supported health and feeding center in Dollow.
"Almost immediately, UNICEF needs USD 8 million to support 30 NGOs like this one to provide services across Somalia as a whole and if we stop this funding 3 million Somali children and women may no longer have proper access to basic health services," he added.
Approximately 857,000 Somalis require urgent and life-saving assistance and more than 2 million are facing food insecurity as a result of drought, deficient harvests and ongoing conflict in the country.
Preventing a repeat of famine
In July 2011, the UN declared famine in two regions based on analysis by FAO's Food and Nutrition Analysis Unit and FEWS NET. Later that year, the declaration was extended to other regions. After a substantial increase in emergency assistance, a sharp decline in local cereal prices, and an excellent long rainy season, food security improved.
The UN declared the famine's end in February 2012. Currently in the offing, a sweet potato initiative introduced initially for fodder but now well adopted by the communities for both fodder and sweet potatoes for human consumption. However, as FAO braces for a broader rollout of the Sweet Potato Initiative, Burgeon warned that funding shortfalls threaten this potential success story.
"This creative initiative goes to show that working together, we can make a big difference. Where FAO supports the farmers with potato veins and simple technology, WFP will use the produce in its school feeding programmes and UNICEF will promote the consumption of the Vitamin A rich potatoes to reduce deficiencies in children and pregnant and lactating women. Unfortunately for us to sustain this we need sustained funding", said Burgeon.
FAO's programme interventions in southern Somalia are geared towards protecting people's livelihood assets, recovery from crisis and enhancing resilience to shocks. The interventions ensure access to agriculture, livestock and fisheries inputs, prevention and control of livestock diseases and support to alternative livelihood strategies.
WFP's interventions are targeting about 165,000 beneficiaries per month, covering parts of areas of Gedo, Lower Juba, Bay and Bakool regions. The agency's innovative activities are geared towards increasing a voucher-based resilience safety net.
WFP's Emergency Director, Kaatrud said: "This is essentially a pilot, an initial effort, which needs to be taken at scale in a country like Somalia to break cycles of vulnerability and dependence."
Somalia has seen off and on war since the collapse of the state in 1991. Since then, diseases, recurrent droughts and floods have made life difficult for many Somalis, reducing their ability to cope with shocks.

MOGADISHU TOUR | Peaceful Drive from Lido Beach to Via Roma
Take a quick drive with us through liberated Mogadishu, from Lido Beach, Abdiaziz, to Via Roma, Hamarweyne. The Somali government re-took the city from Shabaab rebels with support from the African Union well over a year ago and now despite some remaining concerns daytime checkpoints have been removed from the main roads. Security is still something to consider, nevertheless the city is safer than

World's deadliest tourist Destination.

Travelling should be more than packing bags, travelling long way to a 7star hotel and visiting some of most likely visited tourist destination. According to my idea of holiday, if you have a charged pocket, a desire to taste some adventure (or taste death) then you must visit Somalia. Somalia is on the Horn of Africa, and is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the north-west, and Kenya on its south-west. On June 21, the US Federal Government has issued a Travel Warning for the country. Travel to Somalia is EXTREMELY NOT recommended as the conflict continues.
Somalia is noted as the world's unsafe travel destination and is one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
Somalia is home to the largest coastline in Africa, good hotel and food bargains and the beautiful mountains. In 2004, Somalia's minister of tourism claimed that the country hadn't had an officially-acknowledged tourist in 14 years. The problem? Civil war and fighting among warlords seeking to gain control of drug and weapons trafficking has left Somalia a burning wreck of what was once a beautiful country.
Since the civil war broke out in 1990, Somalia is divided into no less than two dozen warring groups. The proprietors of most of the Hotels may serve delicious lobster on the roof overlooking the sea, but they also advise that visitors hire at least 10 armed guards to get them from the airport to the hotel. The United States doesn't even operate an embassy in Somalia, so you're truly on your own. Terrorist attacks, cross-border warring and brutal, violent street crime wrack the country on a daily basis. So why would you want to visit Somalia? The answer probably would be adventure.
The Safety Tips:
1. Somalia is a Muslim country. As such, be sensitive about where you point your camera. There are many great photo opportunities around every corner (the question is usually what to leave out of each image), but when photographing people, always ask first. Don't ever try to take pictures of women, even if you're a woman yourself. This is considered a great offense and can even result in more than a few harsh words. Also don't try to take pictures of anything that looks as if it could be of any strategic importance.
2. Alcohol is prohibited in Somalia and possessing alcohol will get you into a lot of trouble - and never drink and drive.
3. Never discuss religion. Even highly-educated Somalis who studied abroad won't appreciate it and doors will close for you. Also be aware that the Islamic "call to prayer" happens five times daily and can be heard loudly almost anywhere you go. Just understand that most Somali people are used to it and enjoy it as part of the cultural experience. If you aren't Muslim, it is not expected for you to participate, but you should always sit quietly and respectfully until the prayers end.
4. Do Take care of your clothing as you are visiting a Muslim country.
As with any travel in a war zone, exercise extreme caution. And for a last pray for a safe landing back to your town.

When most people think of the country Somalia, they associate it with the only areas national media cover, pirates, extremist terrorism, famine and war. A self declared independent state of this country named Somaliland seemed to be different from the rest, the people were happy, it was safe to travel too and they seek peace following the 1988 Somali war.
Somaliland is a self declared independent state, that has been fighting for recognition since the 1960’s. Since then, Somaliland has managed to instate its own visa’s, currency, police force and even access to reliable internet.
I wanted to discover more about the somali people are what they are really like, and how they live their lives. So i researched ways to get into the country. Crossing the border is relatively easy in fact, you just need a visa. I found a tour operator named Lupine Travel who offer trips out to the Horn of Africa Via Ethiopia, this was my chance to meet some of the locals of Somaliland. So, after speaking to the company and arranging my trip, I booked my flights, armed myself with my camera and set out to discover the story of the people of Somaliland.

Since 2011, when Yemeni youths took to the streets and sparked the eventual demise of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime, the country has fallen to pieces. The new embattled government is now struggling to cope with a bevy of issues, including sectarian rivalries, CIA drone strikes, and one of al Qaeda's most sophisticated branches. It now risks presiding over the failure of one of the world's most fragile countries.
In "Yemen: A Failed State," VICE News visits some of Yemen's most dangerous and hard-to-reach places and groups, including the national Army in the country's lawless East, the Houthis in Sana'a, and the Popular Committee in the South, to find out how both the government and the West's policy toward Yemen have gone wrong.

Security is still something to consider, nevertheless the city is safer than it has been in over two decades and many people are coming home and finally seeing how the city will heal. If you are planning to return home to Mogadishu or planning to do media or travel and need advice or services, contact us at:
